Winds of change

As fast as the hail-laden storm hit on February 14, locals on the Granite Belt have moved to seek government assistance and stepped up to help

each other. The Granite Belt Growers Association (GBGA) convened to discuss ways to approach government for a revaluation of the farmer’s disaster assistance criteria.

“The damage we’ve seen is entire crop devastation where the hail hit,” GBGA President Nathan Baronio said, noting that his farm of

“about 20 acres of strawberry plants ... basically look like somebody had walked over them with a hedge trimmer”. The storm was so severe, with orange-sized stones pelting the landscape, that there were reports of stock losses west of Stanthorpe.

Rarely does a story come along and no one’s ever the same. That’s the

size of the infinite impact of the murals exclusively appreciated by the public on February 25 on the Southern Downs.

The internal corridor mural and another significantly-sized work, further

inside the mental health facility of Stanthorpe Hospital were created in 2022 in honour of Anna (Astill) Torenbeek, the addition of so much more than colour.

These vibrant walls were a

hope that Anna had while facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis, and precisely why this story was and is all about impact, from her hopes verbalised, ...

Comment on the Southern Downs Library Service

So, after years of offering a second-rate mobile library service, the Southern Downs Councillors have decided to abandon the concept entirely. Quite a slap in the face for those living in the smaller communities in the region.

Here’s a pro tip for our elected representatives –your job is to look at providing services for the community in the most efficient way possible, not abandon them based on some spurious arguments about costs/low usage.

the requirements, you will achieve an outcome of reduced usage. To then argue that demand for the service has diminished over time and is therefore no longer justified is a non sequitur.

To then propose that council could establish community book exchanges, with seeding being by way of items which are culled from the library catalogue, is just a further slap in the face. Congratulations councillors, this is effectively saying to those communities “you’re second class citizens, so you can have books that are deemed no longer suitable for being included in the library resources”.

These are all the indicators of a wonderful community resource. Within the report it is identified that for every $100 spent on the service public libraries deliver somewhere between $230 and $410 worth of value to the community, which is an excellent return on investment. The report also says that “libraries promote equity of access and are a vital community asset”. Why then, would you deny a sector of your community ready access to such services by withdrawing a service that is offered by many other councils throughout the state – on the spurious notion of cost.

We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and promote equality and diversity. Indigenous Australians and candidates from minority groups are encouraged to apply.

The report to council on the matter highlighted the diminishing use of the service as a sound reason for abandonment. Strangely enough, if you reduce the level of service by retiring a class of vehicle that was fit for purpose, replacing it with a much smaller vehicle which doesn’t meet any of

Council’s library services other than the mobile service are first rate and from the information provided with the report in the agenda achieve community usage above the state average, while providing the service at a cost per capita well below the state average.

Yes, there will be costs associated with providing a fit for purpose mobile library service, but if council is serious about providing equity of access to those residents in the outlying communities then those communities deserve better than what our council is dishing up.

EVERYONE’S ENTITLED with Andrew Gale

Phew, what a busy week I’ve had, driving around the country, mostly. Kind of reminds me a bit of the old Lucky Starr song. “I’ve been everywhere man.” Except I was driving a car, not being a swagman. Why, you may well ask?

A couple of work things. Catching up with a mate and his extended family for his 80th birthday as well as grabbing some spare parts after a bit of a “slightly too close” incident with a rock at Leslie Dam. Oops. The biggest trip though was down to a small place called Clarence Town to the north-west of Newcastle. That was to pick up a used engine to go in a small car my wife bought a couple of years ago. We love projects.

One a day, every day, adding up to a couple of thousand kilometres all up and one tired dude and a lonesome ol’ wife (to carry on the country song theme) by the end of it all.

It’s not all that unusual a week for me, to be honest, historically. But lately, not so much. What, with a couple of minor health issues in the last year confining me to bed and the horror, (to a frequent traveller) of border closures, I’ve been almost immobile, travel wise, for the past couple of years.

But traditionally I’ve always been

one to jump in the car and go driving somewhere far away and back in a day. Gold Coast – Easy. Bundaberg – sure. Grafton – why not? Sydney even, (with a sleep on the way back), or even further afield.

But why? I might hear you say. A question I’ve oft’ heard from my darling wife as well. Why?

The answer is simple - Bargains, deals and discounts, too good to be true and let go past. Brought to me by the magic of the internet. Formerly Ebay, but now Gumtree and Facebook marketplace most of the time.

I love it. It’s the modern day variation of the classic “Trading Post” or newspaper classifieds, except on a nationwide and worldwide scale. Have ute - will travel.

So why not use the post office? Or a courier I hear you say? Well sometimes it’s just cheaper to drive yourself, in the right vehicle, even if you take in the time it takes to drive. Sometimes its faster and often it’s the only way to do it. I mean, the guy at the back of Newcastle just didn’t have any way to load onto a truck etc so it was the only way it was going to happen.

Besides that, I love that drive down through Barrington and Gloucester. It’s incredibly scenic and the pie shops are a bonus too.

Just another way that technology and the internet is making the world a smaller place.

Except when you have to drive everywhere.

…………I’ve been to Boonah, Booral, Booval, Nerang. Burleigh, Inglewood, Inverell, Deepwater, Tenterfield. Gloucester, Walcha, Uralla, Barrington, Karara, Cararra …….I’ve been everywhere!!

COLUMN CENTIMETRES

It gives you a sense of what my life is like lately in that I wrote my last Column Centimetres in a bank, waiting, waiting, waiting. While bank profits seem to be expanding, bank staff seem to be shrinking. This of course means opportunities for the institutions like the Warwick Credit Union and the Bendigo Bank to remind people of what banking used to be like, where a banking job would be one of prestige in a town like Stanthorpe or Warwick, and a trip to the bank would be a few steps down from a trip to the airport…and opportunity to get dressed and enter a different world.

could hand over the cash and turn the account into zero. Sounds simple hey? Well anything that involves phoning one of the big banks is not simple, but I got the figure, and then the officer told me the fateful words: “We will send you a statement with the figure in 24 hours”. The problem is that 24 hours is a long time in loans, and by the time the statement arrived, the figure was 24 hours out of date. The bank refused to do the calculations as to what the figure would be in 24 hours. The supercomputer couldn’t do the math.

My life simply doesn’t have enough hours in it; I’ve become increasingly good at multitasking, so typing about one thing while talking about another is no longer impossible to me…although I do have to check in case I write things like “the sample seems pretty skewed, and the kurtosis score of 1.5 indicates the sample is light tailed” in the middle of a rant about council. Although perhaps those words would slip in and people would nod and say, “yeah, that batch of councillors really isn’t a good sample of what the community is about…” So my colleagues, both academics who have volunteered time to helping with the Bangladesh charity I always bang on about, were sitting next to me talking sports scores, the bank officer was tapping away on the neurons of a super computer, and I was typing away on my laptop. My frustrations with the big banks came to a head when I tried to close my home loan recently. Getting a home loan is hard. The paperwork would be enough to light a fire all winter. But closing a home loan is almost impossible. To close a home loan the bank I was with set up an impossible little puzzle. I needed a ‘pay out’ figure, so that my new bank

So I got the permanently outof-date figure, handed it to my new bank, they paid the figure and of course the old bank wouldn’t close the account because the figure they had quoted was 24 hours out of date, and I had underpaid what I owed. I got the owed figure, which came to $48.28. I tried paying it. It bounced. I thought I’d add 20 cents to the figure as I was sure I’d now be charged interest on the $48.28, and thought 20 cents should just about do it. It just about blew the gasket of the system, that’s what it just about did… The bank refused to close the account because I was not 20 cents in credit. I spent another half hour on the phone negotiating what to do…would I like a cheque for 20 cents? I told them to shove the proverbial 20 cents in their (electronic waste paper bin). They said, OK, the account will close in 48 hours. 24 hours later, I just checked my online app, and I can report, amusingly if bank torture amuses you, that the 20 cents credit has now disappeared. They swallowed it. But the home loan is still open.

Southern Downs still flying high over Greece

Following Deborah Wheeler’s international success this month at the Mykonos International Film Festival, the response to the project continues to draw interest - locally, nationally and on the world stage.

Taking out first in the ‘Best Short Documentary’ category for “Second Generation ANZAC: The story of Alf Carpenter”, Mrs Wheeler said “it’s been an amazing response”.

“I have received emails and phone calls from all over Australia and overseas,” she said. “Alf’s family are simply delighted to know his story will be seem by people all over the world.

“Winning the International Award for the documentary has far reaching consequences for both This Story Australia, myself and the Southern Downs. Many meetings have been organised for me on both a personal and event level for when I travel to Greece and Crete in May.”

Our newspaper’s friend, Deb, said travelling to Crete on the 82nd Anniversary of the Battle of Crete will be “a truely humbling experience” and we will go with her, bringing readers the news of all that transpires.

“So many people have express interest in meeting me while I am over there and I hope to meet as many as possible, especially those who have ties to our ANZACS during the battle,” she continued.

“We have received very strong support from the Cretan Societies in Brisbane, Sydney

and Melbourne. This, together with the local support has been overwhelming and invitations to speak at functions are coming in thick and fast.

Deb and Jeff Hughes of This Story Australia, who was a key part of the project, are “looking at doing a showing of the documentary in Warwick in April so locals can have an opportunity to view Alf’s story in the lead up to ANZAC Day”.

“We were strongly advised to enter the documentary into the Mumbai International Film Festival which Jeff has done,” Deb said. “While this is very exciting for us it also restricts us being allowed to let the public see it commercially.”

All the more reason to be front row in April in Warwick. More details to come with copies of the book available from our office in King St, Warwick.

Safer glider operations still a work-in-progress for Warwick

The Warwick region is a mecca for gliders, with its large tilled expanses of black soil a powerful source of uplift, and the aerodrome out at Massy offering a hub for glider operations. Improvements at the airstrip, offering safer glider operations are however still in the works as Southern Downs Regional Council voted to request further information before supporting Warwick Gliding Club’s submission for a new bitumen strip at the Warwick aerodrome.

A report debated by Council at the most recent Ordinary Council meeting highlighted the shortcomings Warwick Gliding Club are facing in providing safer glider operations at the aerodrome.

Southern Downs Regional Council were issued a notice of non-compliance by Australia’s national authority for the regulation of civil aviation in 2017, highlighting fin

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) said in their notice, “Council currently permits glider operations at the Warwick aerodrome within the runway strip for the main runway, however, there are no markers provided to mark the glider runway strips,” a serious concern for safe operations at the airfield.

In 2020, Southern Downs Regional Council secured funding through the Regional Airports Program to improve

safety in a number of facets, including “a safer and more secure glider runway,” the report says.

A submission by the Warwick Glider Club, in response to CASA’s safety recommendations, indicates the necessity for an all-weather glider strip to be built parallel to the southern side of the main runway, in order to comply with CASA requirements.

Southern Downs Manager of Community Services, Michael Bell told Council that formalised locations of the glider strips at Warwick aerodrome have been indicated in Airservices Australia’s En-Route Supplement Australia (ERSA) handbook.

“We have two gliding strips … and what this group (Warwick Gliding Club) is seeking to do is

put an additional gliding strip in this case paved roads … think of it purely as a paved road,” Mr Bell said.

“The group is looking for support to proceed with that submission to build it … but the report also highlights some of the other aspects that Council

needs to consider, particularly around renewal, maintenance, and all those works that go hand in hand with an asset,” Mr Bell said.

Bell noted that Council had not formalised the proposed glider strip RWY27L, and as a result, had not established or

maintained the area for use as a landing strip.

Despite the detailed report submitted to Council for consideration, Councillors voted with the recommendation to request a more detailed submission be provided on the proposed scope of works.

Official handover of Dog Tags

Last year I wrote about the chance discovery of WWII Veteran Joseph (Joe) William Morrison’s Dog Tags being advertised for sale on Facebook. Thankfully a relative of Joe’s alerted me to this fact and together we were able to purchase the Dog Tags and a Returned From Active Service badge.

The two items in question belonged to Corporal Joseph William Morrison QX27818 from Allora. Born in Warwick on the 23 January 1910, he lived in Allora with his family including his brother James. James Gerard Morrison QX41809 had enlisted earlier on the 10 June 1941. Both brothers drove trucks for a living.

At the age of 32, Joe enlisted in Warwick on the 3 March 1942 and was accepted into the 2/96 Transport Platoon. His wife Rosa Morrison was listed as his next of kin. His unit served in Australia and Papua New Guinea.

It is noted on his file that he suffered a fractured rib in June 1942 and was admitted to the 102 Australian General Hospital. After a period of eleven days, he was discharged back to his unit. In April 1945 he was again hospitalised with a carbuncle to his

right knee. Joseph was discharged from the Army at Redbank on the 8 January 1946.

The 3rd March 2023, marks the eighty first anniversary of Joe’s enlistment. Mel Ivy and I will officially hand over the Dog Tags and the Returned From

Active Service Badge to the Warwick RSL Sub Branch. President John Skinner said, “We will be proud to accept these items as they will go towards keeping our military history alive.” Gone but not forgotten …

Anna’s legacy

“It’s a pleasure to be able to do something for our local hospital”: Jim Barnes

Continued from page 1...

...to the President of the Rotary Club of Stanthorpe, Jim Barnes’ wish for Laurie Astill to do what he does best: paint.

Anna’s generous and remarkable husband told our newspapers that this also “was a way to honour her memory,” as a key part of the Stanthorpe community, and a well-known and loved nurse at the facility.

“The murals were part of a hospital project undertaken by the Rotary Club,” Jim said

before, during and after the February 25 event. “(And) another part was to add carpet to the floor (of the facility), and potted plants.”

Jim too is emotional when speaking of the “generosity from the hearts” of the artists who contributed their time and talents, agreeing that Laurie, his daughter, Megan, and artist, Julie Brown, who also knew and loved Anna, “were very invested”.

The humble, local Rotarian is “really happy with the afternoon

and the results”, saying, “It’s a pleasure to be able to do something for our local hospital”.

He was also pleased to present Laurie and Julie with a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of their contribution.

“This is our gift,” Laurie said of the works, the most distinctive including the striking mental health “Monarch butterfly”, and many other special touches including gumnuts, added “for a bit of amusement”. The smaller mural was reproduced from a distinctive photograph of a figure in a bright yellow raincoat, used with permission from American artist, Jake Olsen.

Megan Astill recalled a special conversation that also continues to have impact.

“Mum was here, in palliative care, and turned to dad and said, ‘Wouldn’t it be good, Laurie, if you could do something for my fellow staff and the clients, to brighten up the space?’” she recalled. Her dad added, “Anna had a devotion to caring and desired for the space to be brightened.”

Director of Nursing of the Stanthorpe Hospital, Chris Smith and Arlene Mascadri were both on hand as part of the

presentations, visibly pleased with all that was transpiring as was the crowd of about 100 locals and visitors, including the ukulele component of The Graniteers, other Rotarians and those who had prepared the afternoon tea.

Anna Astill passed away of

bone cancer in February 2020. We can all aspire to having such a valuable and ongoing impact on the mental health and well-being of others.

Active

Whether it’s a sport, activity, club, band or service initiative, these experiences play an incredibly important role in a child’s development. It’s here where potential is often unleashed, confidence is gained, grit is grown, and passions are discovered over time. It’s why we believe that getting kids to ‘move and do’ is perhaps one of the simplest but most powerful ways we can support them in their learning and their character development.

At SCOTS PGC, activities are available to students from Year 1 right through to Year 12. Our Co-Curricular offering is broad and comprehensive to ensure that there is ‘something for everyone’. Activities at SCOTS cover five key areas – Agriculture, Creative Arts, Cognition, Sports, and the Arranmore Program (for our younger people of the College).

We are a country school for country kids, and our Agriculture activities offer students the opportunity to be part of our Sheep and Cattle Clubs. Here,

they learn how to work closely with the animals and are taught the fundamentals of showing and judging sheep and cattle. You’ll often see our kids at the local agricultural shows in action in the parading and

judging arenas.

The Creative Arts are important to SCOTS PGC. From Choirs to Rock Bands, Pipes and Drums to Drama and Ensembles – there are plenty of options for the musically

minded students. Our Cognition category feeds the brains of our boys and girls who love testing their skills in strategy games, debating and STEM focused activities. There are sports galore at

SCOTS. We provide opportunities for students to be part of a range of sports in a competitive environment for athletics, basketball, cricket, cross country, equestrian (campdrafting and English disciplines), futsal, hockey, netball, rugby union, rugby 7s, swimming and tennis. Our qualified coaching staff provide an excellent support to students who opt for a representative pathway too. Our ‘Arranmore’ program is designed specifically for students in Years 1 to 6 and is delivered in a non-competitive environment by qualified internal and external presenters who are experts in their field. Activities include, tennis, hockey, gymnastics, arts and crafts, role playing and strategy games, choir, cooking, athletics, rugby, netball, dance, cricket, basketball, golf, futsal and touch. Sounds pretty good, right? Our students think so too… they are happy that they can take part in a range of activities with their schoolmates before and after school – it’s all part of what we do here at SCOTS PGC!

“On the night of the storm, there was so much hail that it stood six inches high in some places. Even if you had hail netting it would have brought down absolutely everything,” Mr Baronio added.

The GBGA disaster discussion event was held at the Applethorpe Research Factory last week, with representatives from the Southern Downs Regional Council, the SQNNSWHub, and Rotary attending, and a focus on reforms reforms, for government assistance for hail storm devastation.

“At the moment, guidelines of Category C Funding, which provide grants to farms to help with cleaning and getting back on your feet, are completely irrelevant when it comes to hail,” Mr Baronio said. “They’re designed for regions that grow one line, for regions that are affected by widespread flooding or cyclones. Hail doesn’t happen that way. Hail is limited to a spot in the region, and is completely devastating.”

The GBGA is calling for farmers who were affected by the event, to complete the Disaster Impact Survey, so the GBGA may present the information to the

Queensland and Federal government, in order to start a discussion “as to how we look at these criteria to bring them forward to 2023” with regards to the expectation that weather events will become more erratic as climate change develops.

“If climate change is a thing, and we’re going to get more of those hail storms, we need to have a look at how the government’s assistance is being coordinated for the changing weather,” he continued.

“I don’t think 15 per cent of farms being affected, is a worse event than 5 per cent of farms being completely wiped out.”

A farmer can potentially lose their entire year’s income due to devastating events like this one, and the cost of re-growing new plans can be costly. “Buying the plants alone are 80c to a $1 each. If you’ve got 500,000 plants, and you bring them into production, you’re looking at an investment of $700,000 being wiped out overnight.”

Mr Baronio said that the way farms are operating now, alongside the lack of effective funding for devastating events like hailstorms, would not be viable, as “the cost of production is just too high these days”.

The hailstorm that devastated farmers only two weeks ago, was south of Warwick inlaces such as Applethorpe and The Summit but also in Ballandean, Glen Aplin, Severnlea, and Dalcouth as a “once in 30 years’ weather event”.

Tens of thousands of dollars were destroyed and farmer Simon Gasparin

said he lost “about 90 percent” of his crops.

The event was considered unusual by farmers and the Bureau of Meteorology for the time of year that it hit.

More in our papers tomorrow about the extraordinary displays of resilience and generosity seen since February 14.

Member for Southern Downs James Lister was pleased to be present for the Men’s Shed 10th birthday bash last weekend, telling us they are worth their weight in gold.

“I was delighted to see the Stanthorpe and Granite Belt community come out in force to celebrate our Men’s Shed’s tenth birthday,” Mr Lister said. “Our Men’s Shed just gets better and better and it is a credit to our community.”

The local representative agreed with the summation that the outreach is vital, saying “Men’s Sheds are “very impor-

tant institutions in these modern times”.

“Men’s Shed brings blokes together and give us a chance to work with our hands. In this day

and age, that kind of social bonding and activity saves lives.” Collective congratulations to all involved.

State schools get smart on organic waste

Contributed

The Queensland Government has funded more than 100 school-based organic waste reduction projects, encouraging the next generation to get excited about composting and reducing green waste and food scraps from entering landfill.

Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said 113 Queensland state schools will share a total of $232,247 under round two of the Organic Waste Smart Schools program.

“These grants will support projects designed to teach students about fun ways to reduce and re-use organic waste including worm farms and living compost systems, waste separation bins and gardening tools to turn their waste into useable organic material,” Minister Scanlon said.

“This is a great way to teach students of all ages about the science behind composting and the benefits of reducing organic waste going to landfill.”

State schools across Queensland have received funding under round two of the program, including:

- Urandangi State School in Boulia Shire which will receive $2,455 to introduce ‘Go Green Recycling Stations’ into classrooms where students will get involved in collecting, sorting and recycling classroom waste including organics, plastics, paper and other recyclables waste. This project will also fund worm farms and related equipment to manage the organic waste collected by the school.

- Labrador State School on the Gold Coast which will receive $2,278 to incorporate organic waste recycling into a larger recycling system by purchasing a worm farm, compost bins and wheelie bins.

- Belgian Gardens State School in Townsville which will receive $1,785 to create a black fly larvae composting system which will be used to dispose of the school’s food waste, turning it into food for the flies. The flies will then be used to feed the school’s chickens, lizards and finches from their black-throated finch breeding program.

- Junction Park State School in Brisbane will receive $2,305 to fund a

‘chook tractor’ and two chickens, which will be moved to weedy areas and to exhausted garden beds, where they will eat the weeds and replenish the garden by adding fertilizer to the soil.

While visiting Holland Park State School in South Brisbane, Minister Scanlon said the school would receive $2,500 to implement waste separation bins to reduce the amount of organic waste going into landfill and embed the process of recycling, including composting, into the curriculum.

“Not only will the school install separation bins on campus, but they will use the bins to teach the students about how to use them and why it’s important,” she said.

“Students in the Eco Warriors group will lead the way, encouraging the other children to get involved and use the bins.

“It is great to see Queensland’s next generation so passionate about reducing organic waste and I look forward to seeing all of these projects come to life across the state.”

2023 ROUND 1 - OVERVIEW

After what has felt like an eternity, we are finally back in action with the NRL getting underway this week.

And it couldn't come soon enough!

Round one kicks off on Thursday night (2nd March) with 17 teams in the competition thanks to the addition of the Dolphins, and it sets up a number of questions to be answered over the next seven months.

The most obvious one is, have the Panthers lost their lustre? They've faced a mass exodus of key players for this season, and they are set to lose more big names from 2024 onwards.

Whether they will be able to overcome that adversity with new faces stepping up after looking sluggish in the World Club Challenge is a big query.

They do have Nathan Cleary and a strong support cast though, so they can't be counted off to bring up the hat-trick.

How will the Dolphins fare in their first season?

Led by one of the greatest coaches of all time in Wayne Bennett, their pre-season form has been just fare to put it nicely.

With a roster that is missing star power, will they be able to bring enough week in, week out, to compete with some of the competition's heavyweight teams, or are they certainties to claim the wooden spoon in year one?

If not Penrith, who?

We've touched on the Panthers being very vulnerable this year, and if they are, who will be the club to knock them off the perch for the first time since 2020?

The Roosters have recruited strongly, headlined by Brandon 'The Cheese' Smith joining the ranks, while South Sydney haven't lost any key players and looked super impressive in the Charity Shield.

North Queensland will be stronger for their breakout season last year, and the Sharks will be hungry to build off their impressive regular season.

The only question we can answer now is that, yes, it's good to have NRL football back!

Step Up to Clean Up, Australia Sunday March 5, it’s time to contribute

Contributed

Ihave often marvelled at the amount of rubbish thrown out of car windows on our quiet country back roads. As a regular roadside rubbish harvester, I have first-hand experience of what people carelessly toss from their vehicles.

Usually, it’s 3 to 4 kilometres from the local store. In my imagination, I can recreate the sequence of events: Tosser buys iced coffee and packaged sandwich from store, shoves into gob while driving and guzzles drink all by a short 3km distance from the store then blithely chucks the wrapping out the window - repeatedly. I know, because I have picked up

Tosser’s garbage - repeatedly.

According to Clean Up Australia, if we Aussies were to recover all the PET and HDPE bottles that are lost somewhere (some, apparently, on the country road where I live) we could pocket $419 million. That’s a lot of bottles that could be cashed in at the local Containers For Change depot, specifically 4.19 billion bottles. It would be far, far better to recycle all that plas-

If you would like to join a local Clean Up you can:

Warwick is holding an evening event starting at 6pm Sunday March 5 at Tiddalik, Federation Park. The aim is to clean up along the riverbank. Bring a water bottle and sturdy shoes. The event will run until 7.30pm and will be followed by a sausage sizzle.

The battery conscious understand that their discarding isn’t helpful by the normal means. That’s why it’s helpful to know Southern Downs Regional Council is assisting with the use of what they describe as “dedicated collection points for the safe and controlled disposal of household batteries”. Not only is this good timing for the environment but also for the national clean up, featured within this edition.

Supervised waste facilities will allow the disposal of batteries, alleviating the risk to the environment and public health through the “experienced battery recycler, ecobatt”.

Director of Planning and Environmental Services for SDRC, Scott Riley said that expanding the region’s recycling capacity was “a great step forward in providing modern and sustainable waste management practices”.

“We all use batteries at home

“Batteries placed in general waste have a high incidence of causing fires in waste trucks and at waste facilities and this can result in serious environmental and safety hazards.”

and work to power everything from watches to cars, yet less than three per cent of all batteries purchased in Australia are recycled,” Mr Riley said.

“Batteries are a growing waste item and they present potential fire and environmental risks when disposed of incorrectly. Recycling batteries is a more environmentally friendly option, diverting waste from landfill and reducing the harmful impact of chemicals on the environment.

“Batteries placed in general waste have a high incidence of causing fires in waste trucks and at waste facilities and this can result in serious environmental and safety hazards.

Residents can easily keep on top of household battery recycling by having a dedicated empty ice cream container

tic and not have them contaminating the soil or our creeks and rivers for hundreds of years to come.

This year I’m going to help pick up some of this lost resource. Sunday March 5th is Clean Up Australia Day. Founded in 1990 by Ian Kiernan AO and Kim McKay AO, Clean Up Australia has been picking up rubbish and lost resources from parks, schools, beaches and backroads for more than 3

In Stanthorpe a section of Quart Pot Creek will be cleaned up. Meet at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Caves Road at 10.30am for a couple of hours on Sunday March 5.

Amiens State School is having their own clean up on Friday March 3 for staff and students. They will clean up the grounds and attached bushwalking paths then conduct an audit to find out what the school can do to reduce their litter. What a great initiative to teach our

decades, engaging with kids, families and communities Australia wide to change our behaviour when it comes to litter. Collectively, over 20 million Australians have donated over 38.5 million hours over 33 years. Ian Kiernan passed away in 2018, but his legacy lives on. His daughter Pip Kiernan has taken on the role of Chair of Clean Up Australia, continuing the fantastic work that her father started.

young citizens about the importance of protecting their environment.

If you cannot come to a Clean Up event there are plenty of individual activities you can do to make a difference, from making a personal pledge to improve the environment to plogging (jogging and picking up litter - yes, it’s a thing) to adopting small steps in your everyday life that will make a collective impact. The Clean Up Australia website has lots of information for you to check out. Or I might see you there.

handy to collect and fill up until it is ready to be taken down to the waste facility.”

The new battery disposal points are clearly marked at all supervised waste facilities. Wheelie bins are located at both Warwick and Stanthorpe Waste Management Facilities and white 10-litre buckets are available at all other supervised waste facilities.

The following batteries are accepted for recycling: AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, power tool batteries, button cell batteries and other handheld sized batteries that fit in the collection units. This includes most batteries under 5kg.

Car battery (lead acid battery) disposal at Council’s supervised waste management facilities remains the same.

The Long Paddock with Gerard Walsh

Ihave never claimed we have the best cattle on our property at Greymare, we are producers who need the Warwick Saleyards as we buy and sell a fair few cattle through the yards.

We have also secured cattle from Goondiwindi where our Warwick selling agent had a buyer at some sales.

The aim was to buy some good cows and he really did that with a mob of Red poll.

The only problem was out of a mob of 15, three died.

There were some producers in the area who had post mortems done that year and they lost cattle to a fern and the odds are that was the same fern which killed our cattle.

Those cows would have been a great buy except for the losses.

It is often said if you have live cattle, you will also have dead ones and that was the case with the three with the fern.

While we were primarily Hereford breeders down the

years and now Angus, we have had a bit to do with Red poll.

Fifty years ago, my father bought a mob of Red poll cows from the Ready family at Maryvale.

They had a property where there was a large quarry, the house is now behind the quarry.

My Dad used to point out as we drove to and from Redcliffe for boarding school where our cows came from.

At the time, we were short of breeders and the Red polls increased our numbers.

I was even more excited about the cattle as they came from the family property of Bruce Ready who at that time played rugby union for Queensland Country and was a classy Warwick cricketer who ended up making a massive contribution to Warwick cricket as an official and historian.

Down the years, we have bought cattle privately, at the saleyards and in my first couple of years home from boarding

school, I bought six calves from McDougalls Pig and Calf Sale and bucket fed them.

They all had names but the one I remember was Bubbles, a pure bred Hereford we bought at the Pig and Calf Sale.

Most of the calves at the sale were half or full dairy, not beef breeds such as Hereford.

My mother was a bit of an expert on feeding the calves with a bucket of milk, it was a reasonable exercise financially but very labour intensive.

One of the last mobs of cattle were bought had two Belted Galloways, both the same age. One has had two calves so far and the other none.

My wife Margaret likes the Belted Galloways which are really quiet.

Currently we have them on a liquid supplement but often have them on a lick and they followed me last week looking for a bit of lick (loose supplement).

Footy trip

I like the historic games in sport like being at the Gabba when Queensland won the Sheffield Shield cricket for the first time.

This Sunday, we are off to Suncorp Stadium for the Artie Beetson Memorial game between the Redcliffe Dolphins and Sydney Roosters.

It will be the first NRL game for the Dolphins, a team I watched when a boarder at De La Salle College at Scarborough on the Redcliffe Peninsula.

Ballet comes to the Southern Downs

Contributed

Queensland Ballet has taken its place as a vibrant and compelling contributor to Australia’s cultural landscape and an integral part of the national and international ballet ecology.

Following their hugely successful tour in 2022, Southern Downs Regional Council is once again collaborating with Queensland Ballet to host community classes and share the physical, social and emotional benefits of dance.

Australia’s best ballet teachers will grace the region on Wednesday 29 March at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre to offer aspiring local dancers the opportunity to experience the magic of dance from the industry’s finest.

Southern Downs Councillor Sheryl Windle is excited to welcome Queensland Ballet back to the region and said the workshops are an incredible opportunity

for the local community to learn from highly trained dance professionals.

“It’s not every day that our budding dancers have an audience with world-renowned ballet teachers,” Councillor Windle said.

“Queensland Ballet offers an inclusion dance experience and they do an exceptional job of making dance more accessible and engaging for regional communities.

“The workshops have been enthusiastically attended in the past and I’m sure our promising dancers will again leap at the opportunity to learn tips and tricks from Queensland Ballet’s acclaimed teachers.”

A Queensland Ballet spokesperson said no dance experience is necessary and she invited the local community to sign up and explore the wonderful world of ballet.

“Queensland Ballet is excited to hit the road again to spread the magic of ballet with people of all ages and abilities as

part of our 2023 Community Regional Tour,” the spokesperson said.

“In 2023, Queensland Ballet’s expert teaching artists will visit over 30 locations across regional Queensland and New South Wales to deliver community classes, in-school workshops and teacher development sessions.”

The last Saturday of the month is usually a teams event for golfers at Stanthorpe, this time a 2-person ambrose event which was a fund raising day in favour of Glen Aplin State School. Both the staff and the parental body of the school are congratulated for the work and organisation they put in to make the day successful.

They arranged for the trophies on the day, prizes for the raffle of the day and manning the BBQ for a much appreciated burger during the afternoon. Not only parents and staff of the school turned up but also a number of students of the school who helped out during the day. A final figure of the fund raiser is not available but the day was very successful.

Both members and social players were invited to play on the day and the team of Tod Beckett and Anthony Marino returned the best score of the day, a nett 64. Their front and back nines were played to par, a couple of bogies offset with an equal number of birdies.

Close on their heels was the father son team of Ben and Hamish Adam who were a mere fraction of a shot away for runner up. Three teams featured also in the runner up category with Len Leigh and Chris Binge, Josh Anderson and David St John and Brad Silver and Filomena Silver being rewarded.

All in pin shots were claimed by Len Leigh at 3, Andy Burgess at 12 and Matt Burgess at 17. Final prizes for the run down wet to Max Smith and Gary Kirby, Greg Fraser and Eric Ree and Richard Reardon and Lynette Ludlow. Good to see a couple of mixed teams in the prize winning list.

The finale of the day was the raffle for the day, prizes being sourced by the Glen Aplin group, and the auction of a Brisbane Lions football jersey signed by their successful captain at the time, Michael Voss. The best bid was from Brendan McMillan and we wonder if he wears it at the next game. Most likely it will be up on the wall at home seeing it was so well framed.

Back to the usual program next Saturday, the first Saturday in the month of March, the monthly medal and putting competition. Sponsor for the day is half of the ambrose winnint team, Tod Beckett. A-grade tops the board

Asuperb bowling performance by Mitch Darton set up a Maryvale Condamine eight-wicket win against Victoria Hill in the A-grade Condamine Cup preliminary final at Slade Park on Sunday.

Maryvale will now play Redbacks in the Warwick A-grade grand final at 10am Saturday, March 4, at Slade Park.

Colts will play Wheatvale in the reserve-grade season decider at the same time on Saturday at Queens Park.

Club fixtures are played over 40 overs but grand finals are 50-over a side games.

In the preliminary final on Saturday, Victoria Hill batted first and made 152 in 38.4 overs.

Joe Morris led the way with the bat scoring 88 in 88 balls, including eight fours and three sixes.

The next best batsman hit 13.

Paceman Darton took 5-16 off 10 overs which included four maidens.

While he said it may not have been his best bowling, “it was my best figures for the season”.

Kevin Bourke took 2-16 off six overs.

Chasing 153, Mitch Bourke and Andrew Ryan hit 20 in the first two overs.

They added 101 for the opening partnership before Mitch was caught on the boundary for 67 off 52 balls, including five fours and four sixes.

Ryan carried his bat for the innings to be unbeaten on 50 off 67 balls, including four fours.

Michael Bourke came in late in the innings to hit 20 in 25 balls, including three fours.

However, in accordance with Council's Roads and Places Naming Policy, “Big Phill Hill Road” was not supported due to the proximity of “Big Hill Road” and potential confusion. The naming of the newly constructed road is advertised in accordance with Council's Roads and Places Naming Policy. (The Policy is available on Council's website at www.sdrc.qld.gov.au)

Consultation closes: 22 March 2023

Slade Shield win by Stanthorpe

Aninth-wicket partnership of 43 by the Lanza brothers, Jordan and Liam, secured a Stanthorpe win in the Slade Shield final at Roma on Sunday.

The shield is played for cricket supremacy from Lockyer in the east of the Mitchell Shield competition to the best teams in the Western Downs competition, the Knox Shield.

Roma batted first and made 153 in 35.2 overs, Joey Packer

top scoring with 69 off 49 balls, including eight fours.

Andrew Einam was sixth bowler used for Stanthorpe but proved to be the best with 5-26 off 7.2 overs.

He received best support from Zechariah Kalo Shem who took three wickets.

With 50 overs to score the required runs, there was no rush for Stanthorpe but they lost early wickets to be 2-11.

Jordan Lanza came to the wicket at No.4 and hit his third representative half century of the season in making an unbeaten 79.

He faced 100 balls and hit

eight fours and one six. No other Stanthorpe batsman made 20 and at 8-115, the game was balanced in Roma’s favour. That was until opening bowler

Liam Lanza walked to the wicket and joined in a winning partnership of 43 with his brother Jordan.

The winning runs were scored

when Jordan blasted a six over long on when one was required. Liam scored an unbeaten 11 in 27 balls with one four.

The game was played on a synthetic wicket at Roma, a surface not used in club cricket at Stanthorpe.

Stanthorpe used leg spinner Brendon Barker with the new ball in the Roma innings. The move by captain Lachlan Pill paid off with Barker taking the first wicket.

Wednesday February 22 saw a good field of ladies take to the course. It was a mix of all weather conditions, some sun, some wind, cloud and rain. Regardless the ladies turned up to battle it out for the prestigious Club Warwick RSL February Mid-Week Monthly Medal.

Our winners for Division 1 were Melanie McLennan with 70nett, and Marg Adcock runner up with 74 nett. Mary Young won the Division 1 putting, with only 25 putts. Division 1 scored as follows- Liz Cockram 74, Majella Kahler 77 C/B, Mary Young 77, Judy Lester 80, Jill Barnes 84, Di Johnston 86, Kath Devereux 92, Narelle Norris, Anna Cox.

Division 2 winner Lyn McKillop played in the last group of the day, and took line honours with a great 73nett, from early bird Tub Ingalls who had 74 nett. Helen Olsen had two gobbles in her game, (the ball Is holed out from off the green), and took out Division 2 putting with 29 putts. Winning on a countback from Roslyn also with 29 putts. Sharron Cooper won the front 9 with a score of 1 under par. Great going Sharron.

Narelle Norris, Melanie and Lyn won the approaches today, but due to a clerical error there was only one Division 2 approach on the coarse today. As a result, a draw was done from division 2 players, for the back 9 approach, Congratulations Carole Brandon. Well done to Liz Cockram, Majella Kahler, and Melanie for sharing the pro pin today.
