An article published on January 19 in a Southern Downs newspaper has sparked

debate among Councillors, prompting a review of the media policy governing them. The article, which focussed on Councillor Stephen Tancred, called upon fresh faces to stand for council in the next local election.

But the underlying theme of

the article ruffled the feathers of Councillor Cynthia McDonald, who voiced her disappointment during the January 25 Council meeting, with Cr McDonald suggesting it undermined the role of the women currently serving.

“I was shocked when I saw this

piece of garbage because the underlying themes of what it implies are that potentially, we don’t have any sensible women around this room … and that we need more sensible women,” Cr McDonald said.

“That was published under the

banner of the Southern Downs, quite clearly under our banner,” Cr McDonald said. “I would never do so as a councillor. I also believe that [the article] oversteps the mark of our media policy … I don’t believe it expresses the views of the Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC).”

Cr. McDonald continued to express her disdain for the article and said she believed the Council’s CEO had the chance to read and examine it, requesting the Mayor, Cr Vic Pennisi to redact the article.

Achieving Net Zero

According to the clerics of the Green Cult, once we blow up our last coal mine, send all diesel engines to the wreckers, stop using concrete, reinvent sailing clippers, cover the grasslands with solar clutter and the hills with wind machines and then slaughter all of our cattle. . global climate will become serene - not too warm, not too cold. Wild weather will cease, and there will be no more droughts, floods, cyclones or snow storms and no more plant and animal extinctions. But the records written in the rocks tell a far different story about climate changes. Even when nature was in full control, it was not a serene place.Long before the first steam engine puffed along the first railway, earth was periodically battered by natural disasters – earthquakes, tidal waves, pole shifts, magnetic reversals, volcanic eruptions, wild weather and droughts. Huge areas were covered by suffocating continents of ice, desert sands, massive flows of mud and lava, beds of

salt and thick coal seams. Thousands of species disappeared including dinosaurs, mammoths and Australia’s megafauna. Modern humans are not immune to the threat of extinction, but it will not come from today’s warm, moist, atmosphere or from the gas of life, carbon dioxide. It will probably come from the next glacial climate cycle of this era, where long bitter glacial eras are separated by short warm periods. These global weather cycles are triggered by changing orbits in the solar system. In every short warm era like today’s Holocene, the warming oceans expel enough carbon dioxide into the atmosphere to support the abundant plant and animal life that currently surrounds us. But never has this “global warming” prevented the cyclic return of the ice. The Holocene warm era in which we live has already passed its peak and long before we reach Net Zero Emissions, the cold will return. When blizzards blow and glaciers grow, the great ice sheets will spread again. Carbon dioxide will be removed from the atmosphere

into the cooling oceans and most of mankind will be threatened by frosts, droughts, crop failures and starvation. A lucky few living in equatorial regions or clustered in shelters and hot houses around coal or nuclear power stations may survive. Those still able to extract uranium, coal, oil or gas may manage to generate enough warmth and carbon dioxide plant food to partly offset the cold sun, the permafrost and the dry, barren atmosphere. And a few with appropriate skills and tools may become hunters and gatherers again (but most Neanderthals did not survive the last glacial cycle). We should celebrate, not fear, the Modern Warm Era and give thanks for the many benefits gained from using those marvellous natural stores of hydro-carbon and nuclear energy to warm our homes, pump water, recharge batteries and feed our animals and plants. These good times will not last forever. When the ice returns, derelict wind turbines and snow-bound solar panels will remain as stark tomb-stones in the graveyard of the failed Green religion.

Questions to Southern Downs Regional Council via our Letters page

First, what is meant by the comment in the rates notice fact sheet sent recently headed KERBSIDE RATES EQUALISED INTO SINGLE CHARGE. Then it says. The final charge of multiple kerbside collection fees have transitioned into a single charge across the entire region for for the 2022/23.

Once again an ambiguous statement from SDRC. “Entire region”. I’m a ratepayer in the SDRC - does that mean me and whatever it is its transitioned into a single charge? Shouldn’t charges always be itemised and not be collated? What’s going on? Can’t the SDRC employ someone to write these notices so it’s put in a way that is easily followed or is it meant to be hard to understand?

Second question, why do I no longer get a hard copy of my rate notice? I’ve asked two years running to get one but the only way I found out about The Kerbside Rate was when a friend in my area showed it to me. I get my rates paid directly from my bank so SDRC you are assured of get-

ting your money on time but you’re not playing ball. Sounds arrogant of me I know, but I demand better.

Yours Sincerely

Editor’s note:  We’ll certainly be asking these questions, Ross.

Pipeline only partial solution: Pennisi

Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) Mayor

Vic Pennisi welcomed the recent rain to the region but remains conscious that we are “one day closer to the next drought”.

Speaking to our newspapers before the recent welcomed falls of up to 40mm to Australia Day (more falling on Monday January 30), and before the state government announced a $370 million investment in a Toowoomba to Warwick pipeline on January 23, our local leader remained keen to address the need for “a solution for Stanthorpe”.

“I said on the day that Storm King Dam filled that we are ‘one day closer to the next drought’,” Mayor Pennisi said on a sun-lit day mid-January after he helped restore the antique gates of St Joseph’s Church.

“Parts of the community share a different vision to what Council have, as is their right.

We live in a democracy.

“Council’s current position is that we support Emu Swamp Dam as the Stanthorpe solution and we will continue to engage with State and Federal government in an attempt to bring this project to fruition”

A Drought Management Plan was “signed off on”, by Council, in December.

“It is a schemes based plan, which means that Stanthorpe has its own plan, Warwick has its own plan and Killarney has its own plan,” Mayor Pennisi continued while enjoying fruit from a tree with seeds allegedly brought from Italy at the turn of the last century.

“What we adopted was scheme-based which means that when it is necessary to consider the water in Stanthorpe, the

Condamine (River) might still be running so we don’t need to have the same restrictions.

“Up until about September, the region was using much the same water as they were when we were in the drought. Locals

maintained that consistency and have been very water conscious. A lot of that is the result that it was raining but the when rain stopped and temperatures got hotter, our usage has climbed.

“At some stage we will be making a decision when we should we introduce restrictions at Storm King Dam. We have about 18 months of water, and if it doesn’t rain, we are unfortunately back to carting water, and the last thing we need is to have any decision clouded in politics.”

“Many, many people have an opinion on how to fix the issues with water,” he said. “When you get down to 80 litres per person, per day, there’s not much more

to go. That’s starting to have an impact on our health and a decision needs to happen sooner rather than later.

“We don’t want to be carting water again.”

Mayor Pennisi said we are “pinching from Peter to pay Paul” when Connolly Dam’s water is carted to Stanthorpe, referring to the saying that implies such removal of one pocket to another, isn’t a solution.

“We need to fund access to affordable new water, such as Emu Swamp Dam” he said, the leader adding that since the pipeline announcement, “The pipeline from Toowoomba to Warwick is new water for Warwick but it doesn’t get it to Stanthorpe.”

Our newspapers will progress this story as it develops and as we head to print early this week, the skies were opening following some steamy days around January 26 and the following weekend.

COLUMN CENTIMETRES

EVERYONE’S ENTITLED with Andrew

You would reckon that with a big family like ours, (7 children), that by the time number 7 came along we would have seen everything after navigating all of the others through their early years.

But no-way. Our number 7 is completely different. Though not in a bad, bad way. He’s just weird. “Out there,” so to speak. Why? I can’t really put my finger on it. Worrying about stuff like that just keeps me awake at night.

He was the scrawniest of our kids, by a fair way. All the others were whoppers, but child number 7 came out looking like he was made of spaghetti. All long and skinny and wrinkly, with a big head. He looked a bit like Dobby the house elf from Harry Potter to be honest. Just without the giant ears.

It took a while, but he gradually filled out and became more proportional. He hit all those early milestones like crawling, walking, talking and toilet training pretty easily. I suppose with 6 older siblings living in the house he had lots of reasons to move about and be heard.

But then he just kept going. If there was a new way to attract attention to himself – he found it. Whether it was coating his face or entire body in house

God help us if we left a texta pen in reach as he’d quickly end up with a moustache, beard and glasses drawn on his face. In permanent pen. Do you know how long that takes to wear off?!! Coincidently, these episodes always occurred right before some event, like a family wedding or Christmas where photos were going to be taken. Thankfully, we can look back now and laugh.

A disturbing thing happened when he was about 4 or 5, he started learning the letters of the alphabet. In that process he discovered his name started with the letter “I”. This time a texta wasn’t good enough and he took a sharp knife, and he carved that letter into his forehead. You can still see the scar now.

Last school holidays he decided that he wanted to cut his own hair. He ended up looking a bit like a cross between an 80’s punk rocker and a halfshorn sheep. I was forced to try to clean it up a bit and deliberately made it look as terrible as possible. But he loved it. Of course he did. Fortunately, it grew out enough to fix before school went back.

Today I dropped him off at his school swimming carnival wearing a bright yellow body suit. A head-to-toe stretchy thing. Aren’t teenagers supposed to be shy and embarrassed to be different?

For all his quirks I love him dearly. As I do all of my kids and their kids too. I like people to be individuals. Even a little weird or different.

Luckily, so does my wife, otherwise I’d of had no chance.

Oh, and she doesn’t wonder where he got his weirdness from.

If you walk into a Bangladeshi bank, particularly in the country districts where I visit, you’d have to stop for a moment to realise you are in a bank. There are a row of nicely dressed people behind a counter…and no sushi train to explain why they are all facing the same way. And that’s about it. You can see the bank vault as you pass, looking like a vault straight out of Harry Potter, almost a giant cast iron pot belly stove. Every bank has paperwork, but here it is not hidden in filing cabinets, but sandwiched between brownish cardboard, tied up with twine, and stacked high. There is little sense of security, here except maybe an ancient man with an orange beard carrying a sixty-year old carbine; but real security in Bangladesh doesn’t come from the barrel of a gun. It comes from a sense that you are glued into place, your place, in society, and there’s no way to escape. Literally the only way to escape these banks, which are generally on the second floor, not the first, is down the stairs, and straight into a traffic jam that no getaway car can pierce. As for Australian banks, they are something else again. For starters, if you live in towns like Warwick and Stanthorpe, if you wanted to rob a bank, you’d first have to wait patiently for them to open. And if they were open, you’d then have to complete the requisite paperwork, by which time they would be closed again.

I had an amusing experience the other day, not in Warwick, but in Brisbane—armed with my passport, my driver’s licence, and every other kind of proof that I am who I am— in this case, chair of the

charity Co operation in Development— but was treated like I was in a police station queuing for a roster solicitor.

We were trying to change the signatories of the charity accounts to the new treasurer, and even though the Australian Charity and Not-For-Profits Commission showed who the new treasurer was, and the new treasurer was armed with his credentials to prove who he was, the bank was more interested in seeing the minutes showing the change. Now the minutes we had were not on the letterhead, and couldn’t be accepted in that form…so, armed with my laptop in my lap, in full view of the bank officer, I dodgied up acceptable minutes, which involved surreptitiously texting the secretary (who was next to me) and the treasurer shooting home to print out the minutes, sign it, slide it to the secretary for countersigning, and then slid across the table to the bank officer… A crime against good sense all taking place inside a bank. In other words, all the legitimate proof we had was unacceptable, but the only proof we had of the change in signatories that WAS acceptable was the dodgy proof. And I’m sure she saw us doing it…but all she cared about was that the boxes were ticked. I thought I was back in Bangladesh.

Cooler Connie’s “not about self”

Her husband Ray was hesitant because of the long locks he loved. Headstrong Connie Taylor went ahead regardless and had them donated to charity last Saturday, January 28, raising a whopping $17,500, and counting, in the process.

“I started out thinking I’d raise $2,000,” Connie told us. “I thought I’d help someone who needed a wig.”

Well and truly “feeling cool-

er” as a result, likeable Connie hasn’t had such short hair, she thinks, since she was in single digits.

The now 52-year-old said it was celebrating turning 50 years young during the COVID pandemic that made her “think about doing something for someone else”.

“My family are very proud of me,” she said of Ray and their sons, Ryan and John, and estimating that her ponytails came to almost 30 centimetres in length, with the monies raised able to make wigs estimated at $700 each.

Emily Gilbert from Em’s Hair Studio at Glen Aplin can be credited for the chop, ably supported financially by Lifestyle Footwear, Sundown Produce, Atta Farms, Sunstate Fruits, S.C. Gow Produce, Eastern Colour, Ballandean Estate, Connie’s parents, Joe and Nina Ricca, and of course, Taylor’s Family Produce, where the chop took place. As well as the coolness, Connie said she’s “using less shampoo” and the “hair dries quick”.

“It’s important to not be all about self,” she said. “Stanthorpe’s such a supportive community.”

Satellite Rotary Club focus on youth

Alocal Rotary Satellite Club are continuing to focus on youth for their fundraisers this year, with the goal of organising four young people to go on a youth leadership camp.

“We’ve had some young people from Stanthorpe attend our leadership camps, RYLA and RYTS, and we have members in the club that are doing a great job in finding these young people and encouraging them to participate,” Stanthorpe Rotary Satellite Club Chair Leeanne Gangemi said on the event.

“When I took over the Chair, I was hoping we could formalise better, even now that we’ve had success in sending young people there, I’d like to over the next few months, make that more of a formal process so young people can go through an interview process.”

Mrs Gangemi added, “I’d really love for young people in Stanthorpe to know that

we have this available through Rotary, and I think that the work that Rotary does can sometimes go a bit unnoticed, so opportunities that Rotary can give, particularly for young people, is not known about, so hopefully we can promote that a little

more.”

RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) is a leadership camp organised and run by Rotary members with the goal of developing the leadership skills of young people, and giving attendants the opportunity to make connections with youths sponsored from other Rotary clubs. RYLA is typically hosted for young people aged between 19 and 29.

RYTS is intended for youths who are in their senior year of school (Years 11-12) and focuses on the transitional stage for those about to leave school.

“My goal with it is that every year the schools and the young people in the region know that there’s opportunities to go, and not that they’re asked to do it, but that they want to do it, and that they’re seeking the opportunity,” Mrs Gangemi said.

The camps are open to all youth who are interested in attending, “And it would be nice if we can help young people who might not have had these opportunities, particularly because the leadership camps are sponsored, so we pay for those. So if there’s somebody who was maybe keen to attend, but didn’t have the resources to get there, we’d love to be able to help them.”

“But we are also open to youths looking

to broaden their exposure to that sort of leadership opportunity – we will consider everyone who applies, and there’s more than one [application], so we will certainly as a club try to accommodate that.”

“When I was in high school, you would just apply for Lions Youth of the Year, and it was just something we looked forward to doing. It was an interview, speeches, presentations, and it was a really good way of getting that confidence boost. I would like for the schools [of today] to say ‘Hey guys, the applications are open, it’s time to apply.’ If we can get the support of the schools that would be great.”

The other things we’re doing, we have three events on our calendar, again watch this space that’s how we fundraise to get the money to send the youth to the leadership camp. The club is working hard to raise as much as we can so we can send as many as we can. If we had six kids that really wanted to go, but we only had the funds for four, we would be able to find the money. If we have an applicant but don’t have the funds, we can go through another club that has the money.”

A lot of the fundraising events the club does is in the interest of raising funds for these camps, including The Jam Project, which “The idea is to help raise funds to get youth on the programs, but its also helping the CDS – the fruit and vegies that are donated do us through the CDS and other vendors in the region, we then turn into jam, which would then support the high school with their breakfast club. And the CDS they get to use the product in jam or relish form, and anything we have leftover we use to money raised to keep the project going, and it’s been a little success story really.”

Standouts on the Southern Downs

Continued from page 1...

In Stanthorpe, as part of the southern region’s tally of awards, the winners were Citizen of the Year, Morwenna Harslett, Junior Citizen of the Year, Fitzroy Pascoe, Sports Administrator of the Year, Mick Mahoney, Junior Sportsperson of the Year, Thomas (Tom) Petrie, and Cultural Person of the Year, Kath Ives.

All winners were pleased as punch, Ros telling our papers she “didn’t even know” she was nominated. “I had a phone call to return, to the Council,” Ros told us. “I wondered what I had done. It was a very pleasant surprise.”

Australia Day Civic Ceremonies in Warwick and Stanthorpe welcomed 18 new Australians to the region from 11 countries includ-

ing the United Kingdom, China, Philippines and Brazil. We will bring more of their stories next week.

Of these, Mexican-born Catholic Parish Priest, Fr Gonzalo Garcia Duran, took the pledge of citizenship, telling our newspapers he was “very pleased”, surrounded by members of his local parish and St Joseph’s School.

Celebrating Australia Day in Killarney

On Thursday 26th January, the the Killarney Lions Club held their Annual Australia Day Celebration in Pat Bush Bi-Centenial Park. It was a busy day with an estimated 400 to 500 people enjoying the entertainment, games, food and the awards. Visitors were reported as coming from as far away as Brisbane with many saying they will be back again next year. A number of KMAC residents also attended. James Lister MP and Mayor Vic Pennisi addressed the crowd before leaving to attend Warwick celebrations.

The Presentation of Awards took place at 11.00am with Lions Club Member Ray Bodley being presented the Citizens Award by Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Ross Bartley. Here are details of the winners of the awards.

URGENT CALL

SDRC MEDIA POLICY TO BE REVIEWED

Continued from page 1...

“I think there are some concerns with this article … I would like a retraction because I feel it has overstepped the mark and does not represent the SDRC … and it doesn’t qualify as his [Cr Tancred] personal opinion,” Cr McDonald said.

“I would certainly not endorse this going out from our organisation while standing for what we represent as an equal employer,” Cr McDonald said.

Mayor Pennisi advised Cr McDonald to put any grievances she had with Cr Tancred, regarding this article, in writing, and submit it to the Office of the Independent Assessor.

“It is not my obligation, or the CEO’s, or any other councillor in that manner to lodge [a complaint] on your behalf,” Cr Pennisi said.

Southern Downs Councillor, Jo McNally also voiced her disgust at the article, tabling the notion for the council to review the media policy currently governing the councillors.

“I was quite disgusted in what I read,” Cr McNally said. “This is only going to get worse as we lead into an election campaign for those that decide to run again. I would like to see an action out of this … I would like to see us review what councillors are putting out into the media.”

The Southern Downs Regional Council’s Media Relations Policy, last revised in 2021, states that councillors should liaise with the CEO, Mayor and/or the Media and Communications Coordinator, prior

to making any public comment on Council matters.

“Any public comment made by Councillors on behalf of Council in any form of media … should be consistent with Council’s policies, decisions and strategic direction,” the policy stipulates.

The media policy further advises “if comments are a personal view, it must be clearly stated that the comments expressed by the Councillor represent a personal view and not the view of Council,” which Cr McDonald feels Cr Tancred violated in the article in question.

“It is recommended that Councillors identify whether a media outlet will make the distinction between a personal or professional opinion prior to the interview if they intend to speak from a stance other than Council,” the policy states.

Councillor Andrew Gale disagreed with the concerns raised by Cr McDonald and Cr McNally, going so far as to commend Cr Tancred on his statements in the article.

“I’ve read the article and found it quite informative … I saw it as an informative article encouraging people to participate in our democracy, just as we have done,” Cr Gale said, adding, “I’m entitled to have an opinion, just as everyone else is entitled to have an opinion.”

Despite the calls for a review of the Media Relations Policy, the Minutes from the January 25 meeting do not include any mention of this review.

As families around the country are feeling the impacts of the cost of living increase, a positive financial review of the Southern Downs Regional Council may be welcome news for ratepayers.

The recent Financial Report presented at the Ordinary Council Meeting on the 25th of January

underlined many cost savings, which is hoped will mean a reduction in rates in the near future.

The report highlighted that the Council’s operational revenue as at 31st December 2022 of $42.4 million, was almost one million dollars less than at the same time last year.

The vast majority of this extra interest income is seen to have come from higher-than-expected cash balance and changes in Reserve bank cash rates.

Operating grants and subsidies

were under budget by nearly two and a half million dollars due to the timing of funds being received for the various flood events.

Southern Downs Councillor, Stephen Tancred, noted that sanitary charges were more than anticipated and hoped that Council received more income from this.

Operational expenditure is $3.1 million under budget on a year-todate comparison of nearly $47.6 million.

However, the report indicated

employee expenses were over budget by 1.7%, with depreciation and materials/services being under budget by $3.2 million.

Cr Tancred asked Director of Customer and Organisational Services, Leon Love if the employee cost recoveries of almost $700,000 were recovered from capital projects.

“That’s our wage on cost… it’s recovered as labour was used on various projects, whether it be administration or capital or operational projects, we were trying to

recover the costings,” Mr Love said.

Councillor Andrew Gale voiced his delight in the report and hoped that the interest income being under budget by $984,000 was good news.

“Hopefully it will be a driver for downward pressure on rates coming into the budget process,” Cr Gale said.

The Second Quarter Budget Review took place in January and is expected to be presented to Council early this month.

Successful fundraising effort for Protea Place

Contributed

A sell-out crowd filled Kings Theatre at RSL Warwick on Friday 27th January to support the fundraising efforts for Protea Place Warwick with local members of the fundraising team able to raise awareness and detail how it will provide for women in need of support when it begins operating mid this year.

RSL Warwick General Manager, Michael Jones, facilitated the link up of a fundraising event for Protea Place with a double act tribute night of Roy Orbison and the Everly Brothers, and presented by entertainer Issi Dye. The fundraising team were delighted to receive a cheque from the RSL during the night for $1500. Additional funds came from the raffle of vouchers donated by

provision of services for this much needed program.

Other fundraising events over the next few weeks are the Art Gallery Trivia afternoon on February 11, a Golf afternoon on March 19 and an Afternoon with Warwick’s very own ukulele group, the WUPPIES, on March 25. For anyone interested in organising an event to raise funds for Protea Place, such as a movie premier, a concert, a sports dinner and the like, contact the fundraising

team who’ll supply you with a logo for marketing purposes and lend you a banner for your event.

Restoration is well underway at the former manse of the Warwick Uniting Church in Guy Street to bring it up to a comfortable standard as the home of Protea Place. The local community has already shown its generosity in many ways in these early stages of establishing this program. Generous donations of hardware and materials have come from numerous businesses and now volunteers are wanted who will help paint the interior and exterior of the property. If you’d like to join a team of willing workers for a worthy cause, call Ian Darnell on 0478 217 021 or Sue Campbell on 0407 622 877.

“It’s Showtime in Allora”

After a two year break the 2023 Allora Annual Show will bring the ‘Best Little Town on the Downs’ to life in a week’s time, February 10th and 11th.

For Allora Show Society

President Shirley Cornhill, it is a godsend to see the Allora community’s signature event opening its gates for the Society’s 145th event.

After heading the Show Society for an amazing 27 years you might think the 2023 event is just another Show for Shirley, but they are all special she says. A lot of work for her and her committee and community volunteers, but a lot of satisfaction also from highlighting Allora, its’ people and its’ region.

Indeed, the Allora Annual Show is gearing up to be a tremendous couple of days, with the showgrounds looking a treat after some welcome rain and a recent highly successful Allora Heritage Weekend.

Some of the Show sections open for entry include Horse Events, Bull Ride, cattle, Sheep/ Goats/Miniature Goats/Dairy Goats (for the first time), Pet Parade, Utes/Bikes, Anything

Goes, Dogs, Floral Art, Farm Produce, Horticulture/Pot Plants, Fruit & Honey, Vegetables, Crochet & Needlework, School Works, Pantry, Hobbies, Fine Arts, Photography, Woodwork, Home Brew & Poultry/Pigeons/ Cage Birds.

The tradition that has been enjoyed by generations is all happening again within Allora’s tranquil showgrounds with the anthem of the “hot and tasty dagwood dog” ringing in the background.

The Long Paddock with Gerard Walsh

We all get very attached to our dogs and this week one of our old dogs Aussie died.

On Saturday, I was taking our sons Arnel and Ariel to the farm so we could all have some quality time and get some photos with Aussie, our red Kelpie, who was really starting to struggle at age 15.

Our guess was he was in pain, particularly in the back legs when we stood up.

He was having trouble finding food and water as his sight was going.

I decided it was time to take him to the vet after he stood at his drink container and drank water for more than two minutes on Friday.

When I called him, he found his way to his house, the old outdoor laundry for food, but it seemed he wasn’t finding the water at other times, even when I had three containers around.

Sadly when the three of us arrived at the farm on Saturday, Aussie was nowhere to be seen.

A week earlier, he didn’t show up for about 15 minutes and then I saw him halfway from the house to the cattle yards so thought we might still find him.

As time went on, there were a few tears all round as it appeared he wasn’t around.

It has long been said that old dogs go away to die and you never find them and I feared that could be the case with Aussie.

Ariel said Aussie couldn’t walk too far so he couldn’t be too far away so he started looking within 50 to 100 metres of home.

After doing the big loop for about five minutes, Ariel found Aussie between two Pepperina trees.

The news wasn’t good but at least he wasn’t in pain any more and we could bury him.

After spending some time with Aussie and a lot more tears, we took him in the buggy and dug a

plot in some sandy soil in an area where we buried our kangaroo Skippy, a pet pig and our Border Collie dog Torchie,

My wife Margaret suggested over the phone that we cut up two 20kg bags, one to put under Aussie and one on top, so we weren’t putting soil on his face and ears which was a really good idea,

Once we buried Aussie, we then said some prayers for Aussie, thanked him for being such a great dog and a great friend and put some rocks on the ground over his head for a headstone,

We bought Aussie from a Clifton breeder who did sheep dog trialling just for the boys so he was a special dog to our family. Think we might get a little sign to mark where he is buried.

I love all our dogs but in 60 odd years, Aussie has been the most special,

Now we have Max, a cattle dog cross, who is around 12 and going well, and a three-month-old Kelpie called Rover who we bought at Applethorpe as a working dog and company for Max when we knew Aussie was on the way out,

Killarney War Memorial

Last year the Killarney RSL SubBranch were successful in obtaining a Community Grant from the Southern Downs Regional Council for restoration work to be carried out by a local contractor on the Killarney War Memorial Cenotaph. The areas of degradation to the sandstone Cenotaph were particularly identified as those around each of the name plaques and the base of the structure.

It was deemed important to have this preventative maintenance undertaken as soon as possible in order to avoid major refurbishments and potential structural issues in the near future.

Council is very aware of the historical importance of the monuments erected to honour the Veterans from our region and awarded the grant for the restoration work. This history is not only important to our local community but to the wider community especially to the many visitors who travel to the region searching for information on their own relatives who had been involved in the defence of Australia.

These monuments record the details of all those men and women from the area at the time who served and those who lost their lives throughout multiple conflicts. It is important to note most townships in this region have either formal public Cenotaphs or Honour Rolls. From a heritage perspective these must be preserved. In many instances they are

some of the oldest remaining structures within our townships. This is particularly relevant to areas where there are no longer any town centres left.

We are fortunate to have a Council who recognises the importance of projects such as this and reinforces their commitment to value and foster good working relations with smaller community groups within the region. Our well-maintained Cenotaphs display both the community’s and Council’s pride in local heritage. The wholistic value of such public works leads to an increase in tourism and an onflow of support to local businesses.

Sealing around the concrete apron at the base of the structure to prevent the ingress of moisture repointing around the marble inscription panels has been completed. Initial work has been undertaken starting with the removal of lichens and moss on a three-monthly basis with the final process happening again twelve months for the start of the restoration.

Out and About on Storm King

Everyone is talking about rain at the moment, or what happened to fall and where, what is “dry-looking” and aspiring to not going back to the necessary restrictions we remember well.

My dearly beloved, who’s the motorbike enthusiast, was keen to head Storm King Dam way of late to check it out ourselves.

We remember the dam looking very bleak - in fact we walked well into its base while our offspring, and others’, played in any water they could find. I remember thinking at the time that we needed to be careful of what was found at the base of the dam, likely another commentary.

Fast forward to today, and Storm King looks healthy, those living within its reach in terms

of infrastructure, the beneficiaries. The healthy-looking dam provides a pleasant outlook when considering the view from the vantage point of friend’s places nearby.

On that, we are on tank water, outside of the Stanthorpe CBD, and just before the skies opened up about two weeks ago, we bought 13,000 litres of water.

Isn’t that the way of things? At the same time, I couldn’t help but notice the amount of people carting the water carriers on the rear of utilities and the like. It felt like a step back in time.

Speaking to Mayor Pennisi provided context and he, like all you who have farmed for a short or longer amount of time, knows we can be grateful for the

water seen today but must be vigilant for planning well for the future.

I appreciated hearing from Mayor Pennisi that conservative use of water has been seen as a result of being careful, restricted even, during the drought.

Sunday January 29, we took another motor out to Storm King Dam. It was exceptionally

warm to be wearing the bikie jacket but it’s a great Sunday afternoon venture when possible.

Today, January 30, am pleased to hear the impending rain, although to the moment, not much has come through given the sound of the storm activity. It’s certainly cooler while Brisbane family members are lamenting the uncomfortable heat.

We live in hope here on The Granite Belt and can be grateful for the growers who feed us, those who carted and shared water when it was needed, and for the Australia Day merriment seen on Storm King, on more than a healthy stream.

On the recent spend for 13,000 litres, the skies have given us at least half that since, and noting the comments on the streets in Stanthorpe and on Facebook, others too are pleased.

Wishing for more is human but let’s also remember and hopefully reach out to those still struggling from the fooding experienced in recent times.

Aus Day energy

The Australia Day triathlon in Stanthorpe was met with good numbers, just as the skies were sunny for a record of local visitors.

Gail Smail of Smail’s Swim School said the event was a credit to all the organisers and the various ages that took part - with not only events for men, women and children but also a mixed team taking part.

These are the winners of the Mercantile relay team, pictured with Mrs Smail.

A very good attendance despite the hot, sultry conditions. There were some excellent scores produced in all

the classes, with Dave Taylor, Neil Sexton and Gary Snelling all just missing out maximum score by one point, a great effort by all three.

The competitors retired to the clubhouse after the shoot for a BBQ and some well-earned cool beverages.

The first Auskick junior program for the year will be at the Warwick Redbacks home ground, Warwick Credit Union Oval in Jackie Howe Drive, on Friday, February 10, at 4.30pm.

The first week will be a meet-and-greet with a sausage sizzle and some AFL fun with basic drills. The program will go all of first term and all are welcome.

Shelley Doyle is the new president of the Redbacks and said senior training for the men had already started on Monday and Thursday afternoons at 6pm.

“More players are welcome, even non-players who want to be social players and join in the fitness program,” she said. “We are getting around 20 players at training. Our first game will be the Anzac clash on April 22.”

Long-time player Tyhe Clarkson was runner-up in the battle for the Holman Medal in AFL Darling Downs last season and is this year’s

captain coach.
