Acoroner’s report will be prepared on the death of a 25-year-old man at the New Year’s Eve Rodeo at the Warwick Showgrounds. The man, believed to be from Northern New South Wales, was riding in the novice bull rice event, and sustained serious injuries after the man’s mount apparently trampled on him after he was dislodged. Witnesses say the man was wearing a helmet and
protective vest as per health and safety requirements, but the force of the bull’s hind legs nevertheless caused serious damage to the amateur rider’s chest. He was treated by paramedics on site, then rushed to the Warwick Hospital, only a few hundred metres from the Showgrounds, but died not long after. The journey to hospital was marked with drama, when the ambulance carrying the man became stuck in the sludge, with onlookers and rodeo officials rushing to help push the vehicle out of the bog.
The young man was not a regular on the show circuit, but as required for entry to the novice division, held a ‘day membership’ to the National Rodeo Association. The young man, whose name has not been released at the time of writing, is understood to have a young family, with money raised at the National Rodeo Association Junior Rodeo going to assist his family.
“The management committee of the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society Inc extends their deepest condolences to the family and
friends of the competitor,” the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society said in an official statement, calling for privacy for the family during the days ahead.
While the Emu Swamp Dam may have hit another boggy patch on the road to completion, water infrastructure hasn’t completely fallen off
the priority list, with the state government announcing the completion of Sunwater upgrades to the Leslie Dam intake pump station. Three 55-year-old pumps, pipework and an electrical switchboard that are literally as old as the dam itself, were completed in
time for Christmas.
While the new equipment comes at a time when Leslie is still close to brimming (97.94% as we go to press, a long way from its historic low of 3.44% back in February 1995), it happens to come at a
time when we are relatively short of electricity—so the new pumps, while delivering more oomph, will be more energy efficient, and increase the ability to eke more out of the dam during big dries.

There have been a couple of extraordinary stories lately that appear to be about drivers using their vehicles as a weapon, including one
that is literally close to home. A 30-year-old man has been charged over an incident in Millmerran where a 55-year-old man suffered critical injuries on Christmas night. The man died at the scenes, with police taking the younger
man into custody a short time later. Police will allege the 30-year-old deliberately drove into his victim, identified as Russell Klein, a well known rugby league identity in the town.

Forever remembered
The grieving family’s “Poppy Al” and their “Rambo” was honoured with a police escort to Centenary Memorial Gardens, as countless classic Fords lined the streets or took part in the procession, to mark his passion of such vehicles.
Purposely driving through Ipswich on December 23, The Small Newspaper Company joined hundreds of other Queenslanders, and visitors, in the local tribute to Alan Dare, the “Good Samaritan” who attempted to help on the Western Downs but lost his life.
The funeral procession through Ipswich streets was a sombre reminder of the husband, father and grandfather’s brave attempt to see what was amiss before the Train trio ambushed police officers on December 12, killing constables Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold.
The song, “I Will Always Love You”, recorded by Whitney Houston, played as Mr Dare’s wife of 26 years, Kerry, his son, Corey, and his daughter, Renee, were emotionally greeted by those known to them and by complete strangers who applauded as they passed by.
There were many words used to describe Mr Dare –such as “protector”, someone who “lit up a room” and “a real man”.
No doubt remains that he will always be remembered and we were pleased to add our presence and voice to the extraordinary bravery and character of a man taken too soon.

Thank goodness that 2023 is here. For many people 2022 was a year they’d rather forget. While I won’t go that far, I’ll admit I’ve had better, but still had plenty of high points. Regardless, I’m looking forward to 2023 and whatever it brings.
Something that has truly shocked me in the last couple of years has been the rise of our road toll. A complete reversal of trends over the past 50 years. At the end of 2022, the official road toll is 299 deaths on our roads. The highest since 2009 and a sharp increase from the previous year,2021, which was sadly, likewise, an increase from 2020.
The road toll has been decreasing steadily since the early 1970’s. Back when we would kill ourselves on the roads at a rate of around 3,500 to almost 4,000 souls, nationwide. This had dropped to less than 1200 in 2019, with Queensland’s toll being in the low 200’s. This is despite multiple times more vehicles being on the road, travelling vastly more distances every year.
Things like vehicle design improvements, seat belts, Random Breath Testing and other enforcement initiatives have all contributed to these reductions.
As a former cop, a driver trainer and someone who has an active role in road
safety the road toll is something I take considerable interest in. I pay attention to news stories about crashes. I read the weekly crash data produced by Queensland Transport. I am a bit of a road safety “Nerd.”
Enough of what I do. This is an opinion column after all. I want to talk about what I think needs to be done to reverse this upwards trend. I have a couple of ideas but due to my limitations of column space I’m going to sum it up in 3 words “Visible Police Presence.”
I don’t think that this spike in the road toll and Covid are mere co-incidences. Not in a conspiracy theory type way, but the fact that thousands of policing hours were suddenly required to man borders and act as babysitters in hotels etc. at the apparent cost of limiting the time police were available for their core functions.
I’m not saying that the border closures were not necessary. I’m just saying that over that time, I saw extremely limited patrolling being done on our highways. The police visibility was almost nonexistent at times.
Sure, there were cameras, manned and unmanned around the place, and you might disagree with them, but I believe strongly in them. But machines can’t be the only option. They need to work as a part of a wider enforcement strategy, with a focus on active patrolling.
In my opinion, there’s nothing like seeing those patrol cars on the road to make you check your speedo and slow the hell down.
Another thing I know is road crashes affect all of us. They can happen to me, you or your loved ones. They don’t discriminate.
Any of us could be next.

OK, 2023, let’s see what you’ve got. Once upon a time the click of the clock from 11.59.59 to midnight plus one second felt transformative, but these days it feels so unimportant I literally sleep through it. This might be because I’m reaching an age where Google is selecting ‘news’stories for me with captions like “How Much Does A Cremation cost? Prices in 2023 Might Surprise You” and “See What Happens to Your Body if You Eat 2 Bananas a Day for a Month”.
(You know what might surprise me? The day that people realise that capital letters are for special occasions only…like the beginning of sentences, or the proper names of things. And I’ve seen what happens to my wallet after I eat 2 bananas a day for a week…does that count?)
The way trees mark the years with another ring to their trunks, time marks itself on my body with another pain, another price paid for the things I’ve done. A good friend who happened to see my stomach sideway on Zoom remarked that one of the things I’ve done is clearly eat more than 2 bananas a day for a month, but beyond putting on weight, I seem to be putting on pain and weight and wisdom at roughly the same steady speed.
The thing about pain and wisdom at least is that they both are the product of experience, in the case of pain, too much experience.

My right knee sometimes feels like it needs a grease nipple fitted to allow additional lubrication— that comes from a lot of digging ditches in Glen Aplin and bicycling to Glen Aplin in my youth. I’ve clearly typed too long and too hard, as both of my elbows feel like they have had some acupuncture accident. Touch either inside elbow firmly, and I’ll scream something like “QWERTY” and confess my worldly sins.
But my brain seems more mellow. I not only am wiser about useful things like the
probability of changing the world in my lifetime (something I aspired to 40 years ago), but I am also wiser about my stupidity. Now I know in advance where I am going to fail, I’m just not sure how.
One of the things I decided a long time ago to preserve about my youth was not my exceedingly white skin or the nobbly skinniness of my chest, but my stupid optimism. It’s faded now (my optimism that is) but I still like to take on challenges that I really shouldn’t. Like starting a newspaper. I promise it will be my last. Elizabeth promises that it will be my last too.
And reader, in the spirit of 2023 going on 1983, I confess I bought a generator for a hydro water system without thinking it fully through. I have a beautiful stream bubbling briskly through the property and I have a beautiful generator with three wires coming out of it on sitting on the verandah, waiting, wondering. I now have to bring these two together. Water, meet generator. Let nature take its course.
My brother has matured a bit too, and he tried hard to restrain himself when he saw what I had done. He is a practical fellow, full of insight into how it (in this case my mini Snowy River scheme) can’t be done. Well I can tell you one thing about wild schemes, on the basis of my experience: wisdom will never do it. Optimism just might…along some gritty determination fueled by the wry smile off my brother’s face should do it.
Photo shows still life with electric generator and a couple of cacti...the only kind of plants I struggle to kill.
Olav Muurlink is associate professor of sustainable innovation at Central Queensland University, which partly explains his love of hydro-electric generators.

Miraculous survival
Selina Venier editor@thedailyjournal.ink
It was dubbed a “Christmas miracle” and for anyone hearing the news that a 5-year-old and her siblings, aged just 2 and 1 years, survived the crash that killed their parents in Western Australia on December 25, it’s difficult to understand what family members and close friends must be feeling.
No doubt there’s relief of the survival of the children but also shock, and of course, grief, at the death of their parents, Cindy Braddock, 25, and Jake Day, 28, who were reportedly close to home as they attempted to return for “Santa’s arrival” and to be with family during Christmas Day itself.
The children have astounded medics and us ordinary folk, when considering their two-day, estimated 55-hour and up to 30-degree heat ordeal, the
5-year-old said to heroically and instinctively undo the seat beat that was fastened around her one-year-old brother.
Cared for in Perth Children’s Hospital, outside the facility following the tragedy, Mr Day’s cousin, Michael Read, told reporters that the children miraculously had “cuts and
bruises” and were suffering, at the time of their finding, largely from dehydration.
“What I’ve gathered is the five-year-old became unstuck in the vehicle, and she then got the one-year-old out of the car seat,” he said. “It would have been hard for the three children to be in the car for that whole
time. Nobody knows what they went through ... (and) if it wasn’t for the five-year-old undoing the buckle of the one-year old’s car seat, he wouldn’t be with us today.”
Mr Day’s cousin further said the family was “going bit by bit” with coping and, “It is hard, having three kids now growing
up with nobody, apart from other family members.”
The family of five was reported missing when they failed to arrive at a Christmas Day gathering. They had last been seen leaving Northam, a town in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt, about 100km east of Perth, at 1am. They were reportedly driving back home to Kondinin to spend Christmas with Jake Day’s mother.
Police confirmed that the family’s Land Rover had been flipped on the side of the road just 10km from Kondinin and the parents of the three children were found deceased inside the vehicle.
One GoFundMe initiative has raised more than $50,000 for the children, a week following the tragedy, with other donations also reportedly being sent.

Holidays and lives cut short amid new reforms
Selina Venier editor@thedailyjournal.ink
As our family, perhaps like yours, packed beach gear and headed for Surfers Paradise, it was saddening to hear of the helicopter tragedy near Sea World on January 2, the drowning of a male in his 40s on December 28, and many cases of the loss of life in the holidays including the 299 state tally of road deaths recorded to December 31.
At the time of going to print, four people, including a pilot, are confirmed deceased from the mid-air helicopter incident last Monday while 13 were reportedly rendered assistance by the QAS (Queensland Ambulance Service), and countless other holiday makers attempted to help.
Away from the roads and water, since December 27, Emma Lovell’s name has become synonymous with the desperate home invasion that claimed her life in an otherwise quiet suburban street in North Lakes. The home invasion on Brisbane’s outer northern area on December 26 was at a time when most of us were relaxed in our settings, enjoying the Christmas “after-glow’.
Mrs Lovell and her husband, Lee, were migrants from the UK, reportedly persuing a “better lifestyle” to raise their two
daughters.
Calls rang out out for more stringent reforms of “repeat offenders” of crimes with two 17-yearolds charged with the invasion attempt that resulted in Mrs Lovell’s tragic passing from injuries sustained by being violently stabbed in the chest.
Following those calls for changes by “stunned locals” who had obtained some 27,000 signatures by December 29, and 80,000 by December 30, for a proposed “Emma’s Law”, Queensland Premier Anastasia Palaszczuk called an urgent press conference to announce tougher penalties “to safeguard the community”, an investment she described as “paramount”. These announcements, as confirmed by the Premier’s Department, and announced far and wide in media circles, are:
Increasing the maximum penalty for stealing a car from 7 years to 10 years’ imprisonment
A more severe penalty of 14 years if the offence is committed at night, where the offender uses violence or threatens violence, is armed or pretends to be armed, is in company or damages or threatens to damage any property
Amendment of the Youth Justice Act requiring courts to take into account previous bail history, criminal activity and track record when sentencing
Increased penalties for criminals who have boasted about these crimes on social media
Enforcement of what has been described as “extreme high visibility police patrols”
A $9.89 million fast-track sentencing program in Brisbane,
Townsville, Southport and Cairns so children spend less time on remand and more time serving their sentences
Construction of two new youth detention centres
A trial of engine immobilisers in Mt Isa, Cairns and Townsville
The appointment within QPS of the Assistant Commissioner to the position of Youth Crime Taskforce Commander with the above increased penalties apply
to adult as well as juvenile offenders
When asked about the use of the term, “Emma’s Law’, the Premier said: “The suite of reforms that we have announced today, I believe will give reassurance to Queenslanders that we are listening and that we are acting.”

Road tragedy on picturesque hinterland
Selina Venier editor@thedailyjournal.ink
As reported here and in various media, every Christmas holiday period there are tragic incidents and accidents.
The Friday December 31 crash in the Gold Coast Hinterland that claimed the lives of Chris Fawcett, 79, his partner, Susan Zimmer, 70, and her daughter, Steffanie Zimmer, 35, reverberates with our region as another popular holiday destination.
There have been reports of “last conversations” and memories in the recent media, Claudine Snow from northern New South Wales, the daughter of Susan Zimmer, saying there were “premonitions” of possible risk.
“The last thing (mum) said to me in a voicemail was she was worried about driving at this time of the year,” Ms Snow reportedly said.
“I wish she had of just listened to her gut feeling and didn’t go out.”
Chris Fawcett was a local GP in the area, specialising in skin cancer, the medical community said to be mourning his loss.
Sole survivor of the crash, Uiatu “Joan” Taufua, the mother of Brisbane Broncos star Payne Haas, in reports that came to hand on January 2, was charged with manslaughter following the deaths of the three victims.
She is said to be under police
guard in hospital while Sydney lawyer Leigh Johnson is representing her.
The case was adjourned until January 11 where it is anticipated that a bail application will be made.
At the site of the crash, are
three white crosses with the names of the deceased. The words “3 lives lost” are reportedly painted on the road nearby.
Taking to the streets of Stanthorpe this week, we recorded the following commentary:
“The tragedy on the Gold
Coast is shocking. It could have happened to any of us these holidays. I read that the family were going to a restaurant. Just devastating,” Colleen said.
“Christmas always brings with it, some tragedy as more people get around. It’s the way of it. Sometimes I think it’s better to stay home,” Maria said.
“I don’t want to think about it, it’s very upsetting and I hope the police get some answers,” Barry said.

Woodford applauds Toowoomba’s Cloe Terare but taunts Albanese
Selina Venier editor@thedailyjournal.ink
Towards the turn of the calendar year, thousands of appreciative music enthusiasts celebrated the return of the Woodford Folk Festival, within the Moreton Bay Region, with live performances from year’s end to January 1.
Some of the spotlight however was afforded to hecklers of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese before he attempted to promote the Uluru Statement from the Heart, saying, “We will get it done,” and taking charge of the opportunity to address the crowd.
“We will come together as a nation and take the hand that First Nations people have extended to us in an act of profound grace, because it will be when join with our continent’s mosaic of ancient nations, that our modern nation will find our greatest strength and achieve our fullest potential and realise our truest self ... (and) together I know, friends, that we can reach it.”
Prime Minister Albanese said,
“After a bit of a gap, isn’t it great to be here in person,” continuing to offer positivity about post-pandemic events such as the present-day one he wore an Akubra and polo shirt to.
“What a great, aching absence it was, along with so many of the forms we think of as the arts,” he continued. “You don’t need me to tell you that the arts suffered terribly during Covid, and so much of that suffering was the result of deliberate neglect.
“One of the things that the
previous government never understood is that the arts are not a luxury. The arts are central to our very being. Whether it’s our stories being told, or our music being played, or our world being interpreted through paint, dance, textile, stone or clay, we cannot separate ourselves from the arts.”
Former Prime Minister Bob Hawke was honoured by Prime Minister Albanese saying he was a man “who was about closing gaps” and one who was to be remembered for his support of
the Woodford Festival.
Minister for the Arts, Leeanne Enoch, too, was celebrating.
“Woodford Folk Festival brings communities together and delivers arts, First Nations culture, music, dance, circus, ceremony and important conversations in one of Queensland’s most beautiful settings,” Minister Enoch said.
Toowoomba-based Cloe Terare was named the 2022 Billy Thorpe Scholarship winner while Brisbane-based singer-songwriter Hannah Macklin
was the 2016 winner of the Grant McLennan Fellowship, and Jaguar Jonze furthered her career with $10,000 through the Individuals Fund.
Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the Palaszczuk Government had backed ‘Woodfordia’ to build back better from the pandemic with year-round visitor experiences.
“We’ve invested $1.2 million in 20 permanent luxury, fully furnished glamping tents to help Woodfordia expand into camp stays for corporate functions and short holidays,” Mr Hinchliffe said.
“Camping is a Woodford Folk Festival tradition, generating up to $25 million for the Moreton Bay region visitor economy.”
Founder and Festival Director Bill Hauritz AM thanked the Queensland Government for its ongoing support.
Minister Enoch said the return of Woodford Folk Festival further boosts the state’s reputation for “exceptional arts and cultural experiences as we prepare for the significant opportunities presented by the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games”.
Fancy building a microgrid... with a little help from the government?
Queenslanders living in storm-prone regional communities such as the Granite Belt may want to have a peak at the fine print of the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan. Grants from $250,000 are available for feasibility studies
and up to $5 million to build microgrid projects that meet the program objectives and eligibility requirements. A microgrid is like a mini version of the Queensland or national grid, a little island of connected houses linked to a power source such as a large solar, wind or other renewable power source. A microgrid has defined electrical boundaries, acting as a “single and
controllable entity”, and like a home solar system can be connected up to the grid...and survive, like a battery-backed home solar kit, when the wider grid goes down.
For more information on the fund, go to: www.epw.qld.gov.au/about/ initiatives/queensland-microgrid-pilot-fund

feed, Denis and Carmel made the difficult decision to leave Carmden and move into Warwick in 1975.
took about the same time to travel to Cameron and Josie’s place on Cukadoo Station in Queensland’s far northwest.
Denis Ryan was born on June 16, 1947, the eldest child of John (Jack) and Mary Ryan.
He and his five siblings Maria, Claire, Michael, John and Jennifer grew up at Woodford, the family property at Greymare, west of Warwick. These were the days when Australia rode on the sheep’s back and wool was on top in the Traprock.
December was shearing time at Woodford. Denis loved this time of year and made sure us kids (then on school holidays) were available to help Nana, our uncles and aunties, with mustering, yarding sheep, sweeping and penning up, and smoko deliveries.
Shearing season culminated in an enormous gathering of the extended family and friends for Xmas lunch followed by tennis and cricket in the afternoon. Woodford was home base for all of us then.
Denis attended Greymare State School before boarding at Downlands for several years. After he decided he’d had enough education, his first job was with Elders which is where he met his wife Carmel in Beaudesert.
Far (Jack) and Nanna (Mary) helped Denis and Carmel make a start on the property Carmden after they were married in 1967. They were married for 55 years. In that time, they had five children Leanne, Cathy, Jane, Paul, and Marsha.
AfterJack passed away suddenly, and with many mouths to
Den worked several jobs before finally returning to work at Elders in the late 70s. They returned to Carmden in 1989 which is where Dad and Mum were always happiest.
An earliest memories of Dad are of him on the phone. Not a smart phone, although he became quite attached to them as well.
No, this was a landline on a small desk in the corner of a room adjacent to the kitchen in our homes in Wantley and Percy streets in Warwick.
This is where Dad would conscientiously perform his duties as a livestock agent most nights of the week talking to Elders’ clients and buyers. Dad seemed to talk endlessly on the phone about prices of sheep, cattle and wool, and the weather.
As a young kid I (Paul) fondly recall long days and nights working with Dad in the Warwick Saleyards. There was fierce rivalry between Dalgety’s and Elders.
The constant stream of young livestock agents through town, the Elders contingent learnt from Dad and Don McGinness (another Warwick legend).
What they learned from this pair was integrity and respect and a good dose of humility as they ran up and down laneways and loading ramps. Many of them enjoyed enormous success following Dad and Don’s example – being good at your job and a good bloke at the same time.
Before Ancestry.com there was Denis Ryan. Dad could tell you when your family first arrived in Warwick (your extended family
that is) their skills and talents, their likes, and dislikes.
Turn down any dirt road around Warwick and Dad could tell you who was living there now, and several generations before that.
When completing the census, he likely uncovered a few unsavory types, so he knew which roads to avoid too. In another time I suspect Dad may have made a good AFP officer.
One place people lined up to see Dad religiously was at the polocrosse. Dad and Doug Madsen braved many cold nights together at Morgan Park welcoming players from every State and Territory at the gate and many overseas players as well.
It was Dad’s rosy cheeks peeking through the winter chill that signified the end of a long and tiring journey.
Dad’s warmth to friends and strangers was among his most endearing qualities.
Dad loved to get involved in
stuff. Sometimes he got more than he bargained for, but he understood the significance of these roles within the community in good times and bad – droughts, floods, fires, you name it.
Dad was secretary and treasurer of the Greymare Hall Committee for many years and actively involved in the Greymare Cricket Club, Greymare Rural Fire Brigade and Mountain Maid Dingo Destruction Association.
Dad was reliable and trustworthy and would never leave you high and dry. A recurring theme has been people’s appreciation for Dad’s contribution to family, work, and community life.
Dad was beloved by his 11 grandchildren. This is one area where he was happy to let his guard down and have a bit of fun even if it meant getting totally stitched up in the footy tipping each week by 9-year-old Matilda.
Mum and Dad travelled to London for the birth of their first grandchild Cameron. It
A trip to the Mt Isa Rodeo with Cameron was a major highlight for Grandad as were regular letters and cards from Eliza, goal kicking videos from Angus, learning something good about China from Rachel, surf reports from Georgia, hearing stories about tucker the huskie’s exploits from Annabel, Thane’s Creek camping trips with Olivia, midweek pop-ins from Chloe, and IT support from William and Samuel.
Dad was a loyal and trusted friend. He was a good listener and had a genuine interest in getting to know people and for this was guaranteed to run into someone he knew everywhere he went.
He was good fun too and never one to leave a party early. Dad and Mum loved having guests at home, particularly around the Warwick Rodeo.
Dad loved his children and their partners and was extremely proud of each and every one of us. A lot of quality family time was spent around the dining table, whether it was scones for afternoon tea or a nice dessert after dinner. Dad was always happy to oblige and rarely was a crumb left behind.
Dad’s brothers and sisters loved and respected him. It was always “What does Den think?”
What everyone in the family recognised was how committed Dad was to Mum. The bond between Mum and Dad was something to behold. Their commitment to each other and faith in God was the foundation for the life they built together.

The Guymer Brothers
It was on the same day, 8 February 1916 in Brisbane, when brothers Charles Mark & George Bently Guymer both enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces. Charles was born in Warwick and George had been born in Yangan. Their mother Mary Eliza Guymer who was living at the Royal Hotel Mundubbera at the time, was listed as their next of kin. The brothers had obviously been very close, even to the point of them both choosing to become blacksmiths for their chosen occupation.
The brothers were assigned to the 4th Australian Pioneers Battalion but their military service would lead them in different directions and with very different results.
Charles embarked from Brisbane aboard “Clan Macgillivray” on the 1 May 1916 bound for London. From here he was to see service in France before being admitted to hospital. The Military received a cable dated the 22 July 1918 from Messrs. Corser & O’Sullivan, Solicitors, Gayndah, requesting, “No. 2125, Private CM Guymer, 4th Pioneer Battalion, be returned to Australia.” Because of his debility he was sent to England to hospital and it was
from there he set sail aboard the “Argylshire” for Australia. He disembarked in the 3rd Medical District on the 22 September 1919. Charles died on the 8 August 1956 and is remembered with a Plaque at the Queensland Garden of Remembrance, Brisbane.
George on the other hand had a secret, but it would not be until after his untimely death that it would be revealed.
On the 4 May 1916, George set sail in Brisbane aboard the “Seang Choon” for the Seuz.
Upon arrival he then transferred to the “Mona Queen” and sailed to Southampton in England. He was with the 4th Pioneers when the unit embarked aboard the “Franconis” to Alexandria.
His service record indicates he was transferred to the Pioneer Training Battalion at Brimstone Bottom Hospital, England in late November 1916. The Brimstone Bottom Hospital was a part of Tidworth Military Hospital and this facility was used in both the First & Second World Wars.
His discharge from there saw him sent to Larkhill in December 1916. It was there where he undertook training at Administration Headquarters and was promoted to the rank
of Acting Corporal. In late January 1917 he boarded the ship “Clementine” for overseas service, arriving in Etaples,
PBS cap means slightly happier new year
Staff reports
It was news that was embargoed until 12.01 on the first day of the year, but it is news that will be felt through the 12 months of the new year for those who rely on PBS medicines. As of New Year’s Day, the most patients will pay for a single PBS listed item will drop from $42.50 to $30. It comes as the federal government passed legislation late in December lowering the maximum co-payment cost of PBS medicines.
The Pharmacy Guild of Australia’s National President, Professor Trent Twomey, noted the decision will impact most Australians, with some 19 million
patients, relying on PBS-listed meds at one stage or other of the year. With pressure on pricing from electricity to food, a drop in one of the essentials of life will be particularly welcome, Professor Twomey noted. “In 2019-20 we learnt that 900,000 Australian patients did not get a script filled because they could not afford it.
The Pharmacy Guild are pushing for the maximum co-payment to be capped at just $19. While food, fuel and mortgages are high on most people’s cost worries, a national survey commissioned by the Guild in 2022 revealed the affordability of healthcare was the biggest hip pocket concern among polled voters.
France and reverted back to the rank of Private.
He was taken on strength back into the unit on the 7 March
1917. Less than three months later he sustained a shell wound to the head near Messines on the 3 June 1917 as the Pioneers carried out roadwork around Neuve Eglise and Wulvergham. He was rushed to the 53rd Casualty Clearing Station but the next day he died of his wounds.
Red Cross records list his date of death at the 4th June 1917. He is buried in the Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension in France. On his service record he listed his age as 18 years and 4 months however, the Australian War Memorial records at the time of his death he was only 17 years and 8 months old as his true birth date was the 19 September 1899.
George Bently Guymer is listed as one of the 235 known ‘boy soldiers’ currently listed on the AWM web site.
Both men’s names are recorded on the Mundubbera War Memorial. If you have any further information about either of these young men please contact Deborah 0414 852 492. Gone too young.
Snake bite cases begin to rise
We starting to see more reports of snake bites— and they aren’t necessarily accidents that happen in the hills...but often enough at home. Two separate incidents came through last night in Queensland, one male and one victim ending up in hospital with bites inflicted in urban backyards.
Darling Downs Health tends to see 10-20 cases a month, so the danger isn’t quite as rare as we might think. Darling Downs Health Executive Director Rural Dr Christopher Cowling said that numbers are expected to rise as the summer progresses. Prevention, he said was better than cure. “If you do come across a snake, don’t try to touch it or pick it up, instead back away to a safe distance,” and leave the rest to the professionals.
Basic first aid in case of snake bites have changed over the years. Current state of the art is:
• Check airway, breathing and circulation. If the patient has collapsed, start CPR immediately.
• Call 000 for an ambulance to the emergency department of the nearest hospital. Treat any snake bite as an emergency, regardless of whether you think the snake was venomous or not.
• Don’t attempt to drive yourself to hospital or walk. Sit or lie down, and stay as still as possible.
• Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage as soon as possible. Apply a firm bandage over the bite site, and then cover the entire limb.
• Immobilise the limb using a splint. Any rigid object may be used as a splint – e.g. spade, piece of wood or tree branch or rolled up newspapers.
• Keep still and try to remain calm.
You should not wash venom off the skin, cut the bitten area, try to suck the venom out or use a tourniquet.

The Long Paddock
with Gerard Walsh
My first New Year’s Resolution is to have our first aid kits in the right place.
A relative of a relative was at our place on Boxing Day and was scratched by our pup Rover and due to her medication, she experienced a lot of bleeding.
My wife Margaret was looking for some powder or cream for the bleeding and I went to the ute to get the first aid kit, and surprise, surprise, it wasn’t there.
I eventually found it on the desk at the farm, don’t normally get injured at the desk watched a bit of the cricket or making a phone call.
We also have a second first aid kit but can’t find it at present.
While the Boxing Day bleeding wasn’t an emergency, if it was a snake bite or something similar, it would be urgent to find the bandages.
Defibrillator need
It isn’t a New Year resolution but I believe it is time for families to look at having a defibrilla-
tor.
The push to have more defibrillators in the community has been led by Jenny Thornton who lost her husband Danny to a heart attack.
She believes a defibrillator would have saved him.
The Pentath-run committee has given many defibrillators to the community from profits made from the event.
Talking about the Pentathrun which is held in Warwick each May, I suggest to the committee they invite former Prime Minister Tony Abbott to this year’s event which will be the 21st in May.
Tony is a fitness fanatic and is not in Parliament so would now have the time to come and in my judgement would love to be asked.
Forget the politics, just ask him.
There has only been a couple of prime ministers or former prime ministers in Warwick down the years and getting a former prime minister would be
a coup. He could also speak on fitness at the dinner with a few stories from politics.
I remember when Prime Minister Bob Hawke was in town for a dinner at St Mary’s Hall and afterwards I heard some comments about why some National Party members went to the dinner.
The fact is they went to the dinner due to Bob being Prime Minister, not because he was also leader of the Australian Labor Party.

TAURUS 21 Apr-20 May
In my last column before Christmas, I referred to the need for a new and wider Carnarvon Bridge in Stanthorpe.
I haven’t been over it for a little while and didn’t go that way in two trips to Stanthorpe in two days last month but it is narrow and a bit scary and I don’t cross it up to four times a day as many parents would taking children to school.
I believe the community needs to push hard now as there won’t be too much Government money around in a decade as we
pay off the major spending during the pandemic. I know Member for Southern Downs James Lister is pushing hard for the bridge and assume the Southern Downs Regional Council also has it on their bucket list.
The bridge is so long, we would need major government grants, including from the Federal Government which brings in retired cricketer David Littleproud, sorry meant to say Federal Member for Maranoa.

The Sporters had 68 starters play in the pre New Year game sponsored by Danny Lyons.
The winner on the day, with an impressive 44 points was Tony Kahler, and the runner up with 40 points was James Saunders.

Mark Simmonds and Herb Bownds 38 points,Troy Alsford and Greg Wallace on 37 points and rounding things out on a countback was Kris McLennan on 36 points.
Thw Pro Pin 13th seen a great shot from Ron Van
Haren leave the ball 59cm from the hole and thus collected $25, and yes he did get his birdie.
Jesse Harris picked up $20 and Danny Lyons $15 (it’s always nice to let the sponsors have a bit of a win).
Nearest the pins Greg Wallace 5th & 16th, Mark Simmonds 7th, Dave Speedy 9th Mark Paroz 11th.
That wraps up Sporters Golf for another calendar year and we would like to thank all of our sponsors, Bells Butchery, Betta Homes Living, Hawker Road Function Centre (Condimine Sports Club) Birdie Bar & Bistro, Danny Lyons Sports, Meat House on Pratten, Warwick Hotel and the Pro Shop.
Their generous support throughout 2022 was much appreciated and of course we would not be able to function without you, the members.
Sporters would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year and may all your shots run long and true, and all putts find the bottom of the hole.
Prior to this event, the Sporters submitted the following:
Sporters had 88 starters play in our Christmas 2 ball ambrose last week and as usual the day was finished with lots of good food and ice cold drinks thanks to Birdie Bar & Bistro.

Stanthorpe golfers played their last competition for 2022 last Saturday, December 31, a 4BBB stableford event sponsored by “The Hogmanay Howlers”, namely McAuliffe, McBarnett and McFraser – obviously a Scottish trio.
Very impressive appearance from Greg Fraser in traditional costume, the only person in the club who owns a kilt. Good thing the breeze was not too strong.
The event attracted a good field and good scores were returned, none better than from
club captain Keith Jones and playing partner Lorraine Evans who had the best score of 46 points. Lorraine had a very good round and was on the card slightly better than partner Keith, but when required, added six three pointers for their total. They were able to score 22 points on the front nine and came home strongly with 24 points on the back nine.
Just one point back was the team of Santo Cavallaro and Anthony Puglisi. Anthony was visiting from northern parts of the state, catching up with family for Christmas, New Year. They had a good front nine of 24 points but just faded a little on the back nine for 21 points.
It is well known that the
Scottish are frugal with their expenses, so there were no pin shots or pro-pins on the day, save a bit of money. Instead, a longer run down was in order. Those fortunate to earn a voucher included Len Leigh and Matt Leigh, Lyle Bryant and Angelo Maugeri, Barry Hughes and Hamish Adam, Keith Green and Paul Mills and Keith Barnett and Mike McAuliffe.
With the completion of the 2022 program, next Saturday, January 7, sees the start of the 2023 events, beginning with the January monthly medal and putting competition. The event will be sponsored by club member, Alex Vale. In conjunction with the medal day, it will also

the shifting wind still provided a challenge. In the standard class, Greg Wilson and Dave Taylor had equal scores, Greg winning by the x count system. In the open class, visitor Tom McGovern showed the way with a perfect score, with another visitor Mark Paroz runner up.
The visiting shooters had a good day with Greg Bowe tak-
ing first place in the sporter/ hunter class ahead of Daryl Reck.

Town & Strong support for races
Gerard Walsh sports@thedailyjournal.ink
More than 2000 patrons supported the Maydan Livestock
Transport/Freestone Feedlot Boxing Day Races, the second biggest on the Warwick Turf Club calendar.
Club president Barry Burgess said the theme was Hawaiian. “Most of the patrons wore colourful outfits and shirts,” he said. “The first race was at 12.08pm and there was music from 4pm to
8pm which attracted a large percentage of the crowd who stayed on.”
The Trevor Locke Memorial Benchmark 58 Handicap, in memory of a well-loved local jockey, was won by Guts ‘N’ Glory ridden by Gary Geran.
Stellar Power was ridden by Emily Lang to win the feature event, the Trevor Schrool Memorial Magic Millions Country Cup Qualifier by 1.3 lengths from Moscini which is trained by retired bull rider Dale Groves.
The next Warwick Turf Club meeting will be the annual charity day on January 14 when each
sponsor puts in $300, names their charity, draws a horse and if the horse wins, $4200 will go to their charity.
Burgess said the club now had 10 meetings for the racing year.
“We will get extra race meetings if another club can’t race due to weather conditions or track renovations,” he said.
“More than $1,000,000 from Racing Queensland with support from our club is being spent on facilities and the track with upgraded dirt and sand training
tracks, new judges and announcing tower named after Barry Jones, new female jockeys room, new storage and machinery shed, 20 more tie-up stalls for race day, new veterinary room, new inside and outside running rails, new safe fencing in the bird cage (parade area) and some machinery has been replaced.”
A second starting gate is now on course after being transported from Doomben in Brisbane where it was replaced.
Top Run
While there are no winners in the parkrun, it is also about participation, hence the first across the line is the first finisher.
After a successful middle distance running career in New South Wales, Mark Ogilvie is in Warwick and a regular in the weekly 7am Saturday parkrun at Queens Park.
Mark describes the run as fun, particularly when he is having some friendly competition with Pat Sinnott and Joseph Marstella.
“A different one of us is often first home in different runs,” Mark said.
With a larger than normal number of visitors on Saturday, the first finisher was Sean Needham from the Toowoomba Road Runners.
Mark was the first local home in 20 minutes, 15 seconds, 24 seconds outside his best for the two-lap course which is 5km in total.
“I try to do the parkrun each week,” he said.
“I run eight kilometres each day with a longer run on Sundays.”
Even with so much training, he isn’t in to Marathons but came second in the Newcastle Half Marathon in 1989.
“I found out at Newcastle when I was leading what hitting the wall meant,” he said.
As a junior, he ran a 14.59 5km and at age 17 was third in the 1500m at the state championships in a time of 3.53.
He has a best of 1.54 for the 800m but now 37 years later it is all about fitness and fun.
All welcome to parkrun, just register for a barcode online. It starts between the fitness equipment and the Condamine River.
