Atree changer from Stanthorpe scored 134 to pave the way for an easy Stanthorpe victory against Warwick in the first Mitchell Shield cricket fixture played as a day/night game.
Stanthorpe captain Lachlan Pill hit 16 fours and four sixes in 134 off 123 balls before retiring with a groin strain in the game at C.F. White Oval, Stanthorpe.
While he wasn’t going to bowl, a groin strain didn’t stop him taking the field when Warwick batted.
Pill played second-grade cricket for the Sunshine Coast in the Brisbane competition and A-grade in the Sunshine Coast competition before he and his partner headed to Stanthorpe for a tree change.
They ran a wine tourism business for two years but after it was sold, he returned to cricket and is in his second season of Mitchell Shield with Stanthorpe. He now works for Australian Vinegar on the Stanthorpe Industrial Estate
Last season, he hit three 50s in Mitchell Shield.
“The century against Warwick is my most satisfying innings since being in Stanthorpe,” he said.
“I am absolutely enjoying my cricket.”
The injury was a bit of a downer but it has come at a good time with a break around Christmas.
“I hurt my groin in my first game back
last season and was out for three weeks,” he said.
The good news for Stanthorpe is that Pill will be back for the Mitchell Shield final against Lockyer next year.
To cap a winning weekend, Pill captained the winning Souths team in the T20 grand final on Friday night.
Match report
Stanthorpe batted from the start at 2pm Saturday in Mitchell Shield to score 6-304 while Warwick batted for 41.1 overs in the late afternoon and night to score 173.
Sam Dowie was first dismissed caught behind off Warwick captain John Cleary after he made 37 off 49 balls which brought former Brisbane A-grade batsman Charlie Moncada to the wicket for a partnership of 154 with Pill.
Moncada hit five fours in 51 off 71 balls.
After Pill was injured, left hander Jordan Lanza took control and hit five fours and one six in an unbeaten 51 off 37 balls to take the score over 300. He brought up his 50 with the last ball of the innings.
Mitch Darton was the best bowl-
er for Warwick with 2-46 off nine overs.
Warwick struggled from the start with only opener Tom Allison with 35, Cleary, 33 and Michael Bourke, 26, showing some form.
Paceman Chris Cantwell played his first day/night game in a career of more than two decades and made 12.
Liam Lanza was the destroyer for Stanthorpe with 4-23 off 7.1 overs.
Zecharian Kalo Shem took 3-25 off eight overs and Damian Anderson 2-23 off six overs.
Warwick is now out of the Mitchell Shield competition for this season.
Both Warwick and Stanthorpe will play in the Davis Shield competition in the second half of the season early next year.

Police Constables Matthew Arnold and Rachel McCrow, as well as Alan Dare, a neighbour on the Darling Downs of Queensland, will not be forgotten. This was the message seen and heard yesterday when thousands gathered at Boondall Entertainment Centre to mark the tragedy in Chinchilla on December 12, tens of thousands more watching the service online.
The killers, Nathaniel and Stacey Train, along with Gareth Train, a brother, killed the two young officers and Mr Dare and injured Constable Randall Kirk, who has since recovered, and his police force partner, Keely Brough, who ran into the bush to hide.
Today we share the message from Southern Downs Regional Mayor Vic Pennisi about the loss of life experienced, as our region, like the nation, also continues to understand the senseless and violent attacks.

Letters to the Editor
Football last Sunday
This week, our newspapers heard of criticism of the iComply Cup proceeds being given to Vineyard Church in Stanthorpe. The criticism was based on the fact that funding was “better spent” supporting families, according to the opinion expressed. Asking pastor Jeremy Greening to respond, this is what he told us:
It was entirely the choice of CEO of icomply Rodney Prestia to make the day about raising funds to support our Vineyard Christian Church building fund. The church had no input or influence on this choice whatsoever. We are so very grateful for his support.
Rodney made it very clear on the day that he is so thankful for our church and all we do to pastorally care for his team of islanders that this was a small way that they could give back to us.
It was also great to see Rodney award the man of the match a $500 bonus that was sent via western union directly to his family on the day. What a wonderful gesture and support to the family of the recipient, particularly at Christmas time!
By providing all his pacific islander workers with jobs we are seeing great assistance afforded to these families already. Their position with iComply allows them to build homes, support their loved ones and secure a better future for their families, friends and community. I want to personally thank Rodney for all he does for the
Pacific Islander community and his generosity towards their people!
sincerely,
See Sport for the story about the game.

pour heat and real pollution into the depths of pristine waters of oceans covering seventy percent of the Earth’s surface. Heat not only evaporates water, it drives out dissolved gasses such as carbon dioxide. Natural cycles of volcanic activity drive atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide. The reverse does not apply. Human recycling of a relatively small portion of the immense amounts of hydrocarbon fuels within the planet (where fossils obtained their carbon) is clearly the best transition path to a clean energy future. ‘Step on the gas’ once meant telling the tiger in the tank to go faster. Now it means standing on the hose of our air supply and cutting off the engine we need in order to breathe.
Even the bumbling Inspector Clouseau could by now have solved the case of unaffordable energy supply in an energy-rich country, but the Mr Magoos in charge are too busy running around trying to placate the UN, a collection of 233 countries, many the size of small country towns.
The greenhouse gas driving the climate is water vapour. The Sun when it shines heats only a few centimetres of a water surface. But year round, day and night, sub-sea volcanic vents
The work of Professor Wyss Yim confirms the fact that water vapour drives the climate, and that the comparatively trivial recycling of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere by human activity (or even bovine flatulence) is a non event in the drivers of climate change.
The conclusion to one of Prof Yim’s papers reads: ‘Volcanic eruptions are underestimated as a natural cause of climate change in contrast to the exaggerated but minimal impact of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions … Climate change is unfortunately politicised by the United Nations and numerous governments and there is no longer any debate based on scientific truth’.

132 local job hunters backed in non-profit program

It’s a community-based operation that slips under the radar, but the Schools Industry Links Outreach (SILO) is in fact a local non-profit that is into its 22nd year, and has offices in Stanthorpe,
Warwick, Goondiwindi and St. George—and this week it gained a flare of publicity when the state Minister for Employment and Small Business and Minister for Training and Skills Development Di Farmer announced a hefty chunk of funding that will go towards assisting 132 locals entering or re-entering the workforce. The $325,000 in funding will go
towards youth unemployed, mature-age job seekers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, women re-entering the workforce, Australian Defence Force (ADF) veterans, recently released prisoners; and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative, which is the umbrella
for the funding, has a track record, the minister noted.
“We know this initiative is life changing because 76 per cent of participants find work or take on further training around 12 months after exiting a Skilling Queenslanders for Work program.”
SILO’s operation, trading as Gateway To Training (GTT) is a neat fit with the Skilling

EVERYONE’S ENTITLED
with Andrew Gale
The end of the year is a time of celebration for most of us, but also a time of reflection on the year that’s rapidly drawing to an end. For others it’s a time to make resolutions and to look forward to a better year about to start.
I too like to look back on the year that was and what happened in the world around us. One of those things being who has passed away. Here are a few I noted this year.
It’s impossible of course to go past the death of our former monarch, our Sovereign Lady, Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. A great lady who I loved and admired. She will surely be remembered as one the greatest heads of state of Great Britain and the Commonwealth.
We lost great sportsmen too, with Australian cricket fans having to come to grips with the sudden and unexpected deaths of modern heroes Shane Warne and Andrew Symonds as well as that of Rod Marsh.
In the world of entertainment, we had the passing of Marvin Lee Aday, more widely known as Meatloaf as well as the death of Gunditjmar/
Bundjalung musician and storyteller, the great Archie Roach.
The death of a famous person that invoked the greatest sadness though for me, was that of Olivia Newton John.
For weeks after her death, I had Olivia on “high rotation” on my music playlist. And not the Grease/Xanadu and later period Olivia, but older stuff from the early 1970’s when she was “Our Olivia,” on her journey to making it big in the American music scene.
Songs like “I honestly love you”, “Come on over” and “Sam”. Yeah, I know, sad, lovey-dovey and soppy stuff. Music a long-long way from the AC-DC or other loud rock music I normally listen to.
I suppose I can put it down mostly to nostalgia. Those songs were so much of a part of my young life. A life of countless weekend drives in the back of the family car with Olivia on the tape deck playing away and all of us singing along. Trips to visit grandparents, go on holidays or to just go for a drive in the country. The day always being finished off with an ice-cream cone on the way home. Happy memories.
No doubt there are lots of prominent people I have overlooked that have passed in the last year. No doubt there have been losses of people near and dear to you as well. For that you have my sincere condolences.
I look forward to 2023 and all it brings. May it bring happiness in abundance and the minimum of sadness to us all.
Merry Christmas and happy new year to you all.

COLUMN CENTIMETRES
I’m home free…free of jetlag, free of the stomach pains I usually associated with three square curries a day for three weeks, and free of COVID or even NOVID. Apart from a short bout of the runs, beautifully timed for the moment I was within a metre or two from the loo, all good. I was briefly undone by a basket of boiled eggs appearing at the second last school I visited…I surreptitiously sanitised my hands and peeled one but unfortunately, in Asian cultures eating one X means you want 2 x X, and drinking one glass of Y means you want 2 glasses of Y. So another egg appeared, this time peeled by a teacher whose hands were noticeably not quite so sanitised as mine. My interpreter winced when I swallowed the second egg politely. To that point she’d managed to keep me safely to fruit and glasses of the freshest coconut water on earth— literally, cut from the palm moments earlier by machete, and cut open and poured into the glass.
I remember the last time I got into this kind of trouble was in another Asian country. I was in China in 1991, on one of my foolish entrepreneurial adventures. By day I was working for my parents’ sheepskin paintroller factory, and by night I was running a neon light factory in the southern city of Foshan. Yes, you read that rightly. Anyway, much as in Bangladesh today, back in ’91 I was the only white man in a city of a few million, and thus attracted
rather extraordinary attention. As I wandered the streets, on one occasion at least (one occasion that I treasure) someone whispered “Rambo”…which was a measure of how impressive a specimen I must have seemed…but those were not muscles, but simply an extra jumper or two to keep a very thin man warm in a very persistent Chinese winter. I was invited to karaoke which is like inviting a pacifist to a gun show, but I can be self-endangeringly polite, as the egg story shows… so I said yes to that. And I said yes to having dinner with an extraordinary painter who was producing wonderful paintings of locals with oils…and lashings of red wine.
This wine was not Stanthorpe’s best. It was China’s worst. It was redder than the Chinese flag, that was true, but it was rougher than paint stripper, and every time I politely sipped, my host amply poured. He poured two spoonfuls for every spoonful I sipped, so that after an hour or two, the tablecloth looked like a mop at a murder scene. My throat hurt for hours afterwards. One day my inability to say ‘no’ is going to kill me and it truly will be a murder scene…

Billion dollar multi-gigawatt batteries to settle grid wrinkles
Staff reports editor@thedailyjournal.ink
A French company will be charged with building the biggest battery ever built in Australia on the Western Downs as part of an ambitious plan to settle fluctuations in the grid as the nation transitions to renewable power. The super-battery will be one of eight built in an ambitious bid to increase gridlinked battery power by a 1,000% in a single blow.
Neoen is a relatively new player in the renewable energy market, but was thrust into the Australian limelight during the South Australian electricity crisis in 2017. The facility was built, in a sense, by Twitter, when Elon Musk was still in Twitter’s good books, took up a ‘bet’ to build the country’s then biggest ‘Tesla’ battery, in conjunction with Neoen. The battery to be built on the Downs will be at least double that battery in size.
The big battery plan will see all eastern states fitted with at least one stabilising battery, with
Queensland getting two as part of the plan. Each of the eight lithium-ion batteries will be at least 200 megawatts (MW) / 400 megawatt hours (MWh) in capacity and fitter with advanced inverters capable of kicking in whenever the increasingly renewables-fed grid needed them to. Together the eight batteries won’t be able to run the nation for even an hour—but that’s not the point. Instead, the batteries are designed to suck up excess power when its available, and iron out the kinks in energy needs when power requirements
Break-out box
Staff reports editor@thedailyjournal.ink
Mystery solved: Are electric cars charged with power from coal-burning power stations actually any better than normal cars powered by petrol?
It seems ironic to be filling batteries up with fossil-fuel powered electricity…and particularly when you could ‘cut out the middle man’ and simply fill your car’s tank with fossil fuel… no wires required. If you think
about it, all the infrastructure that goes into powering an electric car, all the losses in the electricity distribution system, stack up to such an extent that surely it would be simpler, and produce a lighter carbon footprint, to just pump petrol into the tank. Particularly when lugging around batteries, which weigh hundreds of kilos more than a tank of fuel, is inefficiency itself. In fact, logical as that argument seems, it’s in fact wrong.
The reason is surprising. Electric cars, even when powered by electricity sent hundreds
of kilometres down the wires from coal-fired power stations into on-board batteries are more efficient for two simple reasons: most of the time, electric cars are using little or no energy (e.g. downhill, at stoplights, or when coasting along), and whenever they slow down (which inevitably they do just as often as speeding up) they actually pump power back into the on-board batteries. Electric vehicles (EVs) are not magical perpetual motion machines, but with the actual engines simpler and lighter than petrol or diesel engines
surge. Combined, the big eight could in theory power Tasmania for over three hours, but, ironically, Tasmania won’t be hooked up to the grid, yet. In fact, the batteries will be in a sense doing one of the key jobs currently done by coal fired power plants—stabilising the grid in moments of need.
The Downs battery will be positioned to take advantage of the huge wind generator farm being built west of Warwick/ north-west of Stanthorpe, but in fact, ironically, will be built
smack bang in the middle of the controversial LINC Energy underground gas site—which was recently in the news at the centre of a groundwater contamination scandal. A former Linc Energy engineer was quoted in the media last month saying contamination from the failed underground coal gasification site was continuing to occur, even though legal moves against Linc, which went into liquidation in 2016, have ceased.
(thus offsetting some of the weight factor) a purely coal-fired electricity-fed battery car is still more efficient than a car powered on petrol or diesel. The US Department of Energy put the numbers thus: “EVs convert over 77 per cent of the electrical energy from the grid to power at the wheels. Conventional gasoline vehicles only convert [between] 12 per cent [and] 30 per cent of the energy stored in gasoline to power at the wheels.”
In fact, those cartoons you see on Facebook about a ‘green’ car being charged up by a generator
are not just unoriginal…they’re wrong. In fact, an EV charged by a petrol-powered generator would consume less petrol in total than a vehicle simply powered by petrol. So yes, you could in theory put a petrol generator in the back of your electric car and go on a road trip…and still use less fuel than if you’d headed out in your bog-standard petrol guzzler.

Messages from our local leaders of the Southern Downs Regional Council
Selina Venier Compiled
Recognising that our Councillors have played a major role in the tapestry, as our Mayor Pennisi often refers to, of our region, our newspaper family recently asked them some key questions about Christmastime and the year ahead, both in a personal and professional sense.
Here’s what they shared, of our four questions, some sticking to the script while others wrote their own questions and answers. We thank them and offer the following to these themes:
1. How do you celebrate Christmas?
2. Complete this sentence: Christmas wouldn’t be what it is, without …?
3. What are your personal hopes for 2023?
4. What are your hopes for our region, in 2023?
Mayor Vic Pennisi said:
1. I plan to spend Christmas Day surrounded by family and in particular the growing brood of grandchildren.
2. Christmas wouldn’t be what it is, without … Understanding the reason for the season and the quality time spent with family.
3. Personally, in 2023, I hope that the body, mind and soul can continue to be the source of inspiration and strength it has been in the past.
4. As a region, in 2023, I hope we can have a number of normal years (whatever ‘normal’ means) so that we can catch up on things like road works etc.
Cr Jo McNally said:
1. On Christmas Day, our tradition is family being together.
2. Christmas wouldn’t be what it is, without … Family, an abundance of food, champagne, hol-
idays, and celebration of the festival of Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ.
3. I am hopeful that 2023 will be a year of good health and that I will continue my studies in Education. Instead of making a New Year’s Resolution, I make a commitment to 1. Start doing something. 2. Stop doing something. 3. Do something more and 4. Do something less. I find this helps me stay motivated during the year.
4. As a region, in 2023, our community has had to persevere through so many challenges in the past few years including drought, bushfire, floods, COVID-19 and a labour shortage. I am praying that 2023 is a year that is blessed with many opportunities for all, and that Southern Downs will shine even more brightly as a great place to live, work, play, stay and invest in.
Cr Sheryl Windle said: Our Christmas always revolves around family. Although we are

not all able to celebrate together every year it is important to us to allocate some time with each family member either on the day or in the lead up to Christmas Day.
Christmas wouldn’t be what it is without ... being able to share the celebrations with our children and grandchildren while remembering that it is a time which brings us love, hope and joy.
Personal hopes for 2023 - I would love to allow more time to spend with my children & grandchildren in 2023. I hope all of my family and friends can achieve their dreams while living a happy and healthy life.
Regional hopes for 2023 – My hope for this wonderful region that we live in is that our residents are not subjected to any disasters during 2023. I wish them all a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy, prosperous New Year and I look forward to continuing to represent them throughout the year.
Cr Andrew Gale said: Christmas Day will be… together with our ever-expanding family. I think there will be close to 20 around the house this year.
Christmas wouldn’t be what it is, without … Jesus, family, and Santa Claus.
Personally, in 2023, I will strive to serve the people who elected me in the best way possible.
As a region, in 2023, hopefully we will continue to complete, or at least start, some more of the
next page.

Every Christmas I hear ‘Peace on Earth’ as a cheery song. Unfortunately, this Christmas we have a grizzly war in Ukraine. I recently had a short family business trip to Ireland and at two hotels we stayed in there were Ukrainian refugees. One set affected me greatly. At breakfast each morning I watched several mothers feed their young children then escort them off to school. The fathers were at home fighting what is becoming increasingly a war filled with war-crimes. The mothers were upbeat for the kids but I saw them several times without their children and they were sad. Very sad. Their families were separated and their country was being destroyed and they were strangers in a strange (but welcoming) land. I would put aside all Christmas wishes of my own if those families could just see Peace on Earth in 2023.

Message from SDRC
The Warwick Saleyards Redevelopment Project has reached another exciting milestone with Southern Downs Regional Council giving the green light for external contractor EnviroAg to proceed with Stage 1 of the details design for the facility upgrades.
Co-funded by Council, with $4.5m awarded in 2021 under the Australian Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program, the improvement project will address viability issues identified from the Master Plan and Business Case including animal welfare, environment, biosecurity, industry standards, traffic management, technology and workplace health and safety.
Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said securing a sustainable future for the saleyards played an integral part in supporting the region’s biggest industry and
looked forward to the project progressing for the economic benefit of the region.
“Council is committed to the region’s livestock industry and maintaining a sustainable and competitive market for the Warwick Saleyards,” Mayor Pennisi said.
“The livestock industry has changed and evolved since the saleyards started operating more than 55 years ago and there is no question that a development of sorts is needed to ensure the region has quality facilities which meet current animal welfare, best practice standards and industry trends.
“The future of the facility has been the topic of extensive discussion and consultation with the community and industry representatives for many years and it’s great to see this project gain traction.
Dr Gal: On The Pulse.
“We look forward to the future of the Warwick Saleyards and to providing the best possible facility at an affordable price to ratepayers.”
The Many Faces of Cholesterol
What doctor's visit would be complete without reference to "good cholesterol" (high-density lipoprotein - HDL) and "bad cholesterol" (low-density lipoprotein - LDL) on review of your blood tests? In most cases this is followed up by the provision of conventional wisdom: reduce saturated fat in your diet, add in some plant sterol-enriched foods, and aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise each day.
The relationship between LDL and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (a risk factor for heart attack) has been firmly established for decades. What you might not know is that LDL comprises a diverse group of particles with different physiological effects and metabolic properties. Indeed, this is why not all patients with "sky-high" LDL suffer heart attack, and why some people with only modest elevations in their LDL may develop severe, symptomatic cardiovascular disease. In a nutshell, a subtype of LDL called small dense LDL is far more atherogenic (prone to producing plaque within arteries) and toxic to endothelium (the inner lining of blood
vessels) than other types. Why? Good question! Its small size makes it easier to enter blood vessels, become oxidised, and subsequently initiate atherosclerotic plaque formation. There's a (relative) good guy floating around, called large buoyant LDL, that is far less dangerous in this regard.
The obvious next question is: can we test for small dense LDL? Few laboratories offer this specialised testing; instead, we can estimate on the basis of other parameters like whether you're a diabetic, as well as looking at your relative HDL and triglyceride (a type of fat) levels.
Genetics isn't always in our favour, though diet and lifestyle is largely within our control. Small dense LDL tends to be elevated with a sedentary lifestyle, highly processed diet, and pre-diabetes/diabetes. With 2023 just around the corner, now is a good time to discuss your "metabolic health" with your GP.
Wishing you a joyous, relaxing Christmas and New Year, Dr Gal Strasberg FRACGP
The redevelopment will also importantly allow scope for Council to explore expanding other agricultural industries on the Southern Downs.
EnviroAg was engaged to draft preliminary designs which were finalised and presented to Council in 2021.
Serving with valour

“Our sincere condolences go out to the families of those who tragically lost their lives last week in Wieambilla, and also those officers and their families who were immediately affected by the chain of events that have shocked this nation,” Mayor Pennisi said.
“Our thoughts and prayers also go out to the wider police force who get up every day and put their lives at risk protecting us and keeping our communities safe.”
Mayor Pennisi encouraged a sense of gratitude to those who work for our safety, saying, “If you ever have the opportunity to thank one of our officers, please don’t hesitate to do so. I know they appreciate it every time I do so.”
Our newspaper is pleased to report on the recovery of Constable Kirk, as was our Mayor.
“He and his wife Breanna have been
overwhelmed by the support from the community and the broader police family,” Mayor Pennisi said. “Breanna was also part of the SDRC Youth Council in 2013 and received the SDRC Australia Day Young Citizen Award in 2014. She still feels very much connected to the region and visits home often.
“Our thoughts go out to Peta, Breanna, Stephen and Randall’s respective families and we wish Randall a speedy recovery. We invite him to reach out to us for support whenever he needs to. We cannot imagine what he is now having to deal with.
“Our thoughts must also go out to our Police Commissioner, Minister and all those who now have the unenviable task of unravelling what went wrong, how can we make sure this doesn’t happen again and all those doing their very best to bring some closure not only to the immediate families, but also to all of us who are still living in disbelief.”

Two readers have spoken to me in recent weeks out of great concern for the danger of some of the street crossings in the Warwick CBD.
One suggested the worst crossing was near the ANZ Bank.
The Long Paddock with
There are no signs as to who gives way, drivers or pedestrians.
As explained to me, if you don’t give way as a driver you sometimes get a nasty look from the pedestrian.
The crossings are a point of indecision and I agree with that.
I don’t care who gives way, we just need some direction so a bit of food for thought from me for Southern Downs Regional Council on what I believe is a road safety issue.
I haven’t been to Toowoomba to check but one reader suggested it is clearer in Toowoomba as to who has right of way.
From my own perspective, I often do give way to pedestrians even if I don’t have to.
But if I am late for an appointment, I probably go straight ahead and don’t give way.
Accommodation Creek
I have written in the past that the Accommodation Creek corner and bridge at Ballandean is one of the most dangerous in our local government area and it was raised in Parliament again last month by Member for Southern Downs James Lister.
Not only is it dangerous from a vision
and corner perspective but the last time I went over it the surface was lumpy and rough.
There is also a need in the Stanthorpe area for a new Carnarvon Bridge in the centre of town.
The current bridge is old and narrow and has served the community well but the walk bridge is already closed and pedestrians have to walk on a low track across Quart Pot Creek which is sometimes under water.

Never be afraid to have your say.
Last week, I had the transport and main roads complaints line number and called in relation to potholes on Madsen Bridge across the Condamine River in Warwick and Rabbits Bridge across Sandy Creek on the Cunningham Highway west of Warwick.
The lady on the end of the phone was very helpful and promised to pass on my concerns. It took me less than five minutes to get through.

Tough time
As we approach Christmas time, I urge everyone to think of those who may not be enjoying the festive season.
Before I was married, there was a time when Christmas was boring in my family.
My mother, love her to bits, wasn’t too worried about the present and meal side of Christmas, if you had been to church, what happened for the rest of the day didn’t matter.
It wasn’t right to go working on the farm or mow the grass on Christmas Day and I think my mind said it was a good day for an afternoon sleep.
thing I have done in 32 years in the newspaper industry.
Readers said they wouldn’t have thought I was a candidate for depression and admitted they had been there too.
It was hard to spill the beans on a health battle in 4000 paper copies but I wrote at the time that if it helped one person with mental health issues, a family member or friend it would be worth it.
When I said it was the article which received the second best response in my career I have to say nothing will match the feedback on the tributes I wrote on Brett McKenzie, Nick Nolan, Max Thorley and Abby Ezzy after that fatal accident at the Eight Mile in 2008.
People wanted to read about four of their best young people who were taken far too young, the way St Mary’s Church and the Wesley Chapel at Scots PGC were packed for their funerals was recognition of how the community felt about our four youngies.
I am not going to print my depression article again but if anyone wants to read the article for a bit of an understanding of depression from a sufferer’s point of view or send it on to someone else, please email editor@thedailyjournal.ink and I will send you a copy.

We had a few years when Christmas was boring, then for a few years the Cox family from down the road at Greymare invited Mum and I to Christmas Dinner which boosted the day and later our cousin Judy moved from Brisbane which meant three was a crowd which added a bit to our celebration.
One year, we bought an already cooked dinner from the Condamine Sports Club.
In the past few years, I have tried to ring people at Christmas who might be lonely or left out of Christmas celebrations just for a chat.
Is this the time to break the ice with family or friends people may be at odds with?
Back early in the year, I had a month in the Toowoomba Adult Mental Health Unit after being a little high in mood for a couple of weeks. I predominately have low times with depression.
Two months later, I wrote two pages on depression in the then Country Journal (now also Town Journal) and received the second best response to any-
One of my points was before you are in that space, you just tell friends and relatives not to worry about their problems but it is not that simple.
I didn’t have depression to age 48 and add I am doing very well at present after being in one of those places (clinic) in late 2003/early2004, 2018, 2022 and hopefully not for a long time or at all in the future.
When thinking of Christmas, remember depression can also hit at what should be happy times, I am a sports fanatic and had tickets for the final four days of the 2018 Commonwealth Games but watched it from my motel bed at New Farm Clinic. I had earlier watched from the stands as Allora athlete Matthew Denny won hammer silver and the four in our family saw the 100m and 200m athletics finals.
Might I add my room at New Farm was as good as a five-star motel. I was there for 17 days, we had four workshops a day, I was put on new tablets which suited me and came home really well.

Friday December 9 marked the end of a very fruitful 40 years of teaching for local, Jane Rheeder. Friends and family from Warwick to the Gold Coast came together at the Golf Club to mark the end of her teaching career.
Rheeder originally starting teaching in South Africa before moving with her young family to Australia. Once they had settled into their new home, Jane was straight back working in her chosen field and teaching students on the Gold Coast. Her very first teaching partner and best friend Caroline
decided it was time for a tree change.
Jane Rheeder moved to Warwick five years ago to take up a teaching position at West State School. This is when I first met this amazing woman and we continue to meet every Wednesday evening for dinner. It was Jane who first discovered I suffered from dyslexia. Therefore, I can vouch for the fact it is not only children whom she has helped to teach and mentor. I too am one of the many adults who owe her a great debt of gratitude.
While her teaching time here has been short, her influence on the children and staff of our region has been truly inspiring.
This week Jane spent
from West State School, Indi Castle.
Rheeder said, “What a privilege it was to finish my teaching career being recognised for the positive influence I have had on my students lives. Things don’t get much better than that.” Over the last three years Jane had been working for the Education Department as an educator to teaching staff. This gave Jane the opportunity to work closely with staff, helping them improve their skills and showing them how to implement different aspects of the curriculum into their classrooms.
While the final school bell may have rung on her teaching career, Jane’s first major event in 2023 will be when her

World Cup in Stanthorpe
brilliance by Edwin Baptist from midfield lead to a cracking shot which was not match for Solomon Island Goalkeeper Teddy Taigoa.
Icomply Vanuatu Victorious 3-2 over Icomply Solomon Islands in Inaugural Icomply Football Cup
More than 2000 Spectators were on hand at the International Club In Stanthorpe in Regional Queensland to Witness the Very First Icomply Football Cup where Team Vanuautu were Victorious, 3- 2, in a thrilling match on Sunday 18th December.
The crowd were filled with Vanautu and Solomon National Flags, traditional Island dress, and face painting in what was an amazing spectacle of Patriotism, with seasonal workers travelling from far and wide to support their teams in what was the very first of its kind for seasonal workers in Australia.
Going into the game as favourites, Team Solomon got of to a flying start when former Solomon Island Under20 National Representative Rollence Misitana , broke through the Vanuatu defence to put the Ball Past Vanuautu Goal Keeper Mataio Kalotia, to take an early 1-0 lead.
However the Fighting spirit of Vanuautu was on display and they kept calm and composed and continued a barrage of counter attack with Vanuatu Striker Nakhel Thomas, scoring the equalizer after some brilliant footwork by Zilbea Bong created an opportunity from Midfield.
It didn’t take long until the Vanuatu team struck again to take a 2-1 lead when some individual
The Vaunatu Team continued to mount pressure midway through the second half, and had it not been form some individual brilliance from the Solomon Keeper could have really taken the game to a larger lead, this including a spectacular save from the penalty sport right before half time
From the onset of the second half it was clear that Vanuautu were looking to tire out the Solomon islands team by spreading the ball both sides of the field using the speed of Bernard Barry who was always threatening down the flank, with the midfield of Erik Michael and Andrew Namu controlling the middle of the field with class.
The entire second half was a close encounter with many opportunities for both sides before Thomas Nakhel scored his second goal to give Vanuatu a 3-1 Lead , although that was short lived when Solomons Captain Rollence Misitana, put fellow countrymen Jermey Jay Waetora through with a sublime ball and he capitalized with only the keeper to beat to make it 3-2 with ten minutes to play.
The final ten minutes was played at a frantic pace with Vanuatu Dropping back a defender to protect their lead whilst Solomons kept chasing for that elusive Equalizer. Leading the defence team was Vanuatu Captain Albert Desnie whom has the very tough Job Marking the Solomons Dangerman and Solomon International Rollence Misitana, and he did an outstand-
ing job to contain the Solomon’s go to man.
In the end time was not on the Solomon’s side with the fulltime whistle blown Vanuatu had done enough and were victorious 3-2 to take home the very First Icomply Cup
On hand to present the Trophy was Local Mayor Vic Pennisi, Regional Manager for Australia’s Pacific Labour Facility Men McCaffery and Vanuatu Government Representative and New Country Liaison Officer Patrice Kuautonga whom presented the Cup to Wining Vanuatu Captain Albert Desnie.
The day ended with the Icomply ladies surrounding the Vanuatu
Players to perform a traditional Vanuatu Victory dance which was something the Australian Locals in attendance had never seen before.
CEO of Icomply commended both teams and said the game was first class, exceeding his expectations with both teams leaving everything on the field.
The team celebrating their win in traditional Style with a Kava Session with the Icomply Cup replacing the traditional Kava Shell.
The game was also a fundraiser, to raise money for a local church in Stanthorpe Vineyard Christian Church with Mr Prestia saying close to $8,000 was raised.

Easy last over win to Souths T20 final
Drayton 18.
In reply, Callum Blake hit 64 off 40 balls for Souths.
Vanuatu Test women’s opening batter Valenta Langiatu hit 14 runs off six balls to steer Souths to a T20 grand final victory against Wanderers in Stanthorpe cricket on Friday night.
Batting first, Wanderers made 2-169 with Jamie Carnell hitting 65 off 40 balls and Tim Harslett 34 off 45 balls.
Aidan Halford made 20 and Mitchell
The game came down to the last over with Langiatu’s ability to score at better than two runs a ball helping Souths secure victory with four balls to spare.
Harslett is Stanthorpe cricket president and said Souths took their opportunities better than Wanderers.
“The two highest scores of the T20 season were in the final. No bowler took more than one wicket in the final,” he said.

Eastwell wins titles galore
Gerard Walsh sports@thedailyjournal.ink
Warwick cowboy Mitch Eastwell has walked away from the National Rodeo Association finals with six buckles and three trophy saddles after winning all around, rope and tie and team roping header titles.
He won three buckles for the title wins and three more buckles for winning the finals average in
rope and tie, team roping header and steer wrestling events.
Eastwell was close to a fourth title as he was runner up in the battle for the steer wrestling title.
His first aim in rodeo is consistency and he showed that in round 1 of the finals at Stanthorpe with seconds in his three events.
He had a first, second and third in round 2 of the finals at Gympie but missed out on major placings in the final rounds at Cabooltoure.
One of the high point of his year was winning the rope and tie at the Warwick Rodeo. His part-
The green never lies… and other golfing stories of the week
Garry Hanson Contributed
Sporters had 67 starters for the Meat on Prattensponsored game last Wednesday (14/12) and after some creative story telling last time the write up this week will be somewhat sublime. It was good to see that truth did stand in the way of a good story.
Back to the golf, David Gengos survived a count back to take the major prize from Tim Plemming with both having 38 points.
The run down seen Kel Lucas, GRS, and the Loin King come in with 37 points Ron Simon 36 and to round things out Ian Skillen,
John Porter and Mal Crawford finished with 35 points.
The Pro Pin 13th had Wayne Wells collect $25 Mort Henderson $15 Trevor King $10 and Mark Paroz $6. Nearest the pins Sam McLennan 5th, A Skinner 7th, Peter Wright 9th, Keith Clarke 11th and Josh Jensen 16th.
Remember the game on Wednesday 21st December is our Christmas Party game with a shotgun start at 11:30. It will be a 2 ball ambrose so get there early and avoid the crush.
Sporters would like to wish all members and green keeping staff of the Warwick Golf Club and their families a safe, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
ner Kylie Hancock shared in the excitement of a hometown rodeo with a round win in breakaway roping.
On Thursday, he will have a minor knee operation which will keep him away from the action for a month but will return to compete in the NRA and Australian Professional Rodeo Association.
To cap a successful NRA season for Warwick competitors, Macaulie Leather won the NRA Bull Riding title.
Success at waterpolo
Gerard Walsh sports@thedailyjournal.ink
Southern Downs swimmers Jett White and Bailey Harm have competed for Darling Downs at the state schools water polo championships this month.
They made the regional 13-19 team after trials in Toowoomba in April.
Jett’s sister Alyssa White was a shadow player for the girl’s team and trained with the team in the run up to the championships but wasn’t called up to play.
Jett and Alyssa attend Assumption College while Bailey goes to Scots PGC.
With no water polo fixtures on the Southern Downs, they play for the Toowoomba Water Polo Association along with fellow Warwick/Allora athletes Will Day (Warwick High), Sophie Day (Allora State School), Ellyse Kruger and Chloe Harm (both Scots PGC).
All seven are members of the Allora Swimming Club.
