It’s not in many places you’ll hear the local Mayor sing “Feliz Navidad” with the type of merriment that well suits this time of year. But that was the long-remembered tune of the night when Mayor Vic Pennisi took to the
microphone in Weeroona Park, Stanthorpe, on Friday 9th December.
“He best not give up his day job,” a fellow parkgoer said to The Record, in jest, knowing full well that Mayor Pennisi delights in being among the people of the Southern Downs, also parkside in Warwick, for the same purpose, on 11th December.
After acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land in which we gathered, and paying respects to their present, past and emerging elders, Mayor Pennisi simply said, “What a crowd!” and gave his wishes for Christmastime before breaking into the traditional Spanish tune.

Regarding your comment about the windmills on which my Darling Downs dairy-farmer grandfather and so many Australian pastoralists depended to earn a living, a diesel back-up was an essential accessory when herds of cattle and mobs of sheep depended on a reli-
able supply of water. Sure, some wonderful old Southern Cross windmills still creak around, but comparison with the latest breed of wind-powered, short-operational-life, big-bird-chompers, is comparing apples with rotten tomatoes ref Quadrant 12 November 2022 ‘The Biggest Public Policy Disaster in a Lifetime’ Prof Ian Plimer. I weep to see $2 billion already spent on a wind farm near Warwick now to be duplicated with another $2 billion of money borrowed by the government to be paid off by our children, along with the clean-up costs of this monumental folly. Instead of ‘CarbonCapture-and-Storage’* $4 billion spent on Water-Capture-andStorage would be a far better investment. Solar panel recycling is still an uneconomic dream, but the so-called ‘fossil fuels’ are there in such abundance that by the time humans have utilised a fraction of these in our struggle to survive, still unknown nuclear technology will bridge the transition to cleaner and more efficient forms of energy recycling.
*Euphemism for carbon dioxide capture and storage. Why capture and store a trace gas that does not change the climate and is needed to support life on Earth?
Cheers

The Wieambilla tragedy - which occurred south-west of Chinchilla this week - where two police officers, a concerned neighbour and three alleged perpetrators were killed in an extraordinary incident, have highlighted the dangers that remain with the job of modern policing. Two young police officers, assigned to country duties as part of their early development, are assigned to what seems like a routine missing person’s case, but find themselves facing what appears to be an ambush: a third officer crawling through bushes to escape, only to face the horror of a fire designed to flush her out. The perpetrators are believed to have stolen the police-issued Glock pistols from the bodies of the dead officers.
Sixteen officers, including tactical specialists, were sent in to try and save their colleagues,

Gold and poison
The first time multiple Queensland Police Service officers were killed in the state was an extraordinary case, which ended up in the hanging of the killer—a very high profile killer, John Thomas Griffin, Rockhampton’s Gold Commissioner, back when gold was king. Griffin had taken the extraordinary and somewhat suspicious step of personally accompanying a consignment of gold and bank notes from Rockhampton to Clermont—not in his usual line of duties. Three police officers accompanied the consignment, but the senior officer soon after leaving the city accused Griffith of trying to poison the trio, and refused to continue the journey. The two junior police pushed off. ON arriving at at MacKenzie River Crossing at nightfall, the Gold Commissioner booked into the inn; the two officers camped close by near the consignment. The next morning, gunshots were heard, and initially dismissed. The innkeeper assumed someone was shooting at dingoes, and didn’t raise his eyebrows when Griffith decided to return to Rockhampton. The officers bodies were only discovered a few days later—as was the fact that Griffith was in dire financial state, and had lightened the load being sent north before the convoy set off…as well as after. It was later found that the senior police officer’s gut feel had been literally on the money: the two young officers, Constables Patrick Cahill (left) and John Power had been poisoned before being shot.

The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming!
Oh. Sorry to panic everyone. What I actually meant to say is the “Rushing” is coming.
I just guess, I got over excited with all the rushing going on. You know, the preChristmas rush. People rushing here, rushing there and generally just rushing about. It seems to get worse the closer we get to Christmas. I’ve also noticed it gets concentrated the closer that we get to a major shopping centre as well.
If you don’t believe me, try driving down Palmerin Street or Grafton Street in Warwick on Christmas Eve and you’ll find out. Better still, just take my word for it. Lest you be knocked over in the rush.
I’ve noticed that it’s not just Christmas when it happens but coming into any public holiday or long-weekend you can see the rushing come on. Some worse than others. But Christmas is definitely the prime holiday for it. By a long way.
So why does it happen? What causes it? Or am I just imagining it?
Now, I’ll rule out the last one immediately. I’m not imagining it.
Firstly, this column IS called everyone’s entitled. (As in – entitled to my opinion) and secondly, I’m kind of cut out to notice that sort of stuff.
Why does it happen? I think that Christmas just puts a tremendous amount of pressure on many of us to have a perfect experience. Or to put that on for others. So, whether that’s creating a Margaret Fulton standard Christmas dinner or buying the perfect present for all of your loved ones, any of us can get caught up in the hype.
I’m not saying that’s necessarily bad. Or that some people, probably lots of you out there, can put on a flawless, “holiday poster” Christmas, without turning into some male or female “Clarke Griswold”. But clearly, plenty of people can’t. And all this hype makes us rush. And rush. And rush.
For example, I once saw a relative make three last minute trips to the shops one Christmas eve to buy cranberry sauce and fail to do so every time. Mind you on those trips they bought a special dish for the cranberry sauce. A doily to go under the dish and even a special cranberry sauce spoon but no sauce. At the end of the day all was good though because buried at the back of the pantry was a brand new, unopened cranberry sauce from last year anyway.
Regardless, it didn’t bother me or anyone else I’m sure. Who even likes cranberry sauce.
Anyway, back to “THE RUSSIANS.”
Don’t worry. They’re all tied up in the Ukraine. Fighting with those poor people over there. Worry about those poor Ukrainians.
Makes any problems we have around Christmas seem pretty trivial, doesn’t it.

Power is out now, and has been for 12 hours here; load shedding to do with pumping river water onto the rice. My phone is down to 15%, my laptop is down to 28%, and after a bout of diarrhoea that always tends to punctuate my time in Bangladesh around now, my own energy levels are down to around 28% too.
being strewn on the streets and in the waterways, and more dust and smoke is in the air than when this country became independent 51 years ago. But if you divide the dust and smoke by 165 million that changes the equation.

There are power lines now most places in Bangladesh, blond concrete poles and thick shining wires delivering power that is parcelled out in tiny quantities to houses still made of little more than straw, bamboo and steel….at best bricks made out of clay/mud sucked from the river, and cooked in ovens fed by whatever they can find that burns. People use electricity chiefly for lights and fans here; air conditioners are rare. Electric ‘cars’ are common here, three wheeled cars with lead batteries that race around the bumpy roads delivering goods and people from place to place. That and tractors drawing trailers that are obscenely overloaded and driven at deadly speeds. There’s so much dust and burning going on here that the skies are rarely blue, so solar isn’t really a particularly efficient option. On my video calls with Australia I blink at the pure blueness of the Australian sky compared with what we get in this ‘remote island’. 57 international rivers, plus another 750 or so of local origin wend their way through this largely flat country…but so slowly that hydro power really isn’t a great option either. So Bangladesh is toying with nuclear, and meanwhile is burning gas (some of which naturally enough seeps out of the mud) or coal.
Developing countries like Bangladesh tend to lack the resources to do much about changing their carbon footprint. In fact, their footprint is deepening, as things gradually ‘improve’. More plastic than ever is
We’ve looked at introducing solar to our schools just to provide lighting inside inside the classrooms when it’s darkly cloudy, but on the whole, what electricity Bangladesh produces, Bangladesh uses, and no more….when it uses too much, the power goes out and we all recalibrate. I’ve recently bought an electric car with our petrol one starting to give up the ghost. People talk to me a lot about range anxiety…I have none. As in Bangladesh, the batteries hold what they hold, no more. And refilling them takes time. Back when Australia was first settled by Europeans, we had horses that had to rest and be fed, and then the Cobb and Co coach could resume, no sooner. We’ve got used to the idea of petrol being just a squeeze at the bowser away, but the truth is, we will run out of petrol one day. Maybe not now or soon, but one day. I don’t think going back to the Cobb and Co equation of waiting a while for the horses to eat is a bad thing; maybe now we have to think a little before we drive to Sydney; a little thought, a little reflection, a little planning ahead never killed anyone. There’s certainly no panic and a call for action when the power goes out here.
Picture shows a house made of hay, with a solar panel...and a nice blue sky!

Spike in gastro calls home Carols hit the spot on the Downs
Selina Venier editor@thedailyjournal.ink
When you need a medic on the Southern Downs on a Sunday night, who do you call?
Fortunately, Mum had had the number of Dr Gal Strasberg in her kitchen for a number of months and she often told me, “I have this number if we need it.”
Last Sunday was that chance, not sure whether to write “fortunately” or “unfortunately” as I’d obviously seen Dr Gal’s column in this newspaper but we hadn’t actually met.
His promotion, that was obviously true at the time of printing, of availability on Sundays 10am to 2pm, had changed, as the practice, operating out of Applethorpe, had adapted their hours to be mostly Monday to Friday, they informed us ever-so-politely. You too, like Mum, might have received the notice in the mailbox this year,
of the Sunday times.
Still, a couple of messages to Dr Gal’s number and he soon was at Mum’s house regardless, and more-than-willing to help, where a certain nine-year-old had passed on his gastro-like symptoms that had us at Stanthorpe Hospital the day before.
“Warwick and Stanthorpe are like gastro city,” Dr Gal told us during the 8.30pm Sunday night visit.
The following day, I noted reports that thousands of Queensland children “have been struck down by severe gastro, with one expert blaming health and hygiene complacency as its main cause”.
That seemed odd to me as the pandemic had previously sparked renewed practise of hand hygiene and the like.
Still, the reports said that the latest Queensland Health data reveals “a spike in rotavirus, with 2213 cases recorded from January 1 to November 27, nearly double the five-year average of 1256”.
Rotavirus is said to cause high-
ly infectious diarrhoea and is obviously dreadful for any age but particularly infants.
A Queensland Health spokesperson said the recent increase in rotavirus was, at this stage, “not a public health concern and instead a return to pre-pandemic numbers”.
Dr Gal said we should be mindful of social gatherings at this time of year and didn’t seem terribly surprised that the number of cases has spiralled.
In our case, it’s been “share and share alike,” as happens in families, so we are making the best of it.
Best we remember the value of social distancing when possible and practical, especially when with large crowds, while heightened hand hygiene is a given.
Isolation, hydration and seeking help when necessary, is also key.
Bring on Christmas! And thanks Dr Gal, great to meet you but better, next time, under less “green” circumstances, if at all possible.
Continued from page 1...
“Christmas is a wonderful time of year,” he continued. “It’s a time of family, a time to remember the reason for the season and a time to forgive and forget.”
Mayor Pennisi encouraged the type of feasting that he enjoys, alluding to his love of food, and gave another key
message, before traditional and modern carols were heard.
“I hope you have a healthy, holy and safe Christmas,” he said, then asked what would be “the first thing” he’d do on Christmas morning.
“I’d probably be changing my grandson’s nappy,” Mayor Pennisi said.

Warwick Friendly Society board seeking feedback
Gerard Walsh sports@thedailyjournal.ink
Warwick Friendly Society Association chair Chiara Farrell said her board was analysing community feedback about what is needed in the health space in Warwick.
“We asked members at the recent annual general meeting to fill out a survey on infrastructure and community needs to guide the association as to where the next investment should be,” Ms Farrell said.
“The 2021-2022 year was a record-breaking one for the association.”
“It was a difficult year as we lost previous general manager Ahmad Almester but wished him well when he purchased Inglewood and Texas pharmacies.
“We took a while to find his replacement Shyam Nukala who is the right person for the job.
“When we didn’t have a general manager, pharmacists Fiona Breen and Kaylene Schultz
stepped up well to take full responsibility for our two stores. Our other staff also stepped up.
“We could not be more grateful to our staff and members for their support and the tenants of our property portfolio, Condamine Medical Centre, Warwick Physio Works and the Carbal Medical Centre building in Guy St.”
The WFS has recently opened a pop-up store in the old Video Ezy building one block south of the current pharmacy in Palmerin Street.
This store has all the home health and mobility support products and the sleep apnea department.
Ms Farrell said the establishment of the pop-up store would free up space at the Palmerin St pharmacy to grown the retail footprint of the store and the Medication Packaging Services which includes a free delivery service.
Retired board member Merv Mitchell was at the AGM after serving on the board for 40 years.
He said the reason he retired from the board was the new legislation and government regulations which had come in over time.
“We were always keen to keep membership up as that was one way to keep the business viable,” he said.
“The aim was to give members value for money.”
The Warwick Friendly Society is a major player in the Warwick employment market with between 35 and 40 staff.
The association has close to 5000 members who all get 15 per cent discount on most store items other than perscriptions.
The AGM of the association was attended by 60 members with two guest speakers, Maria Baker from Acciona Energia which is building wind farms at Karara and Gore and Amanda Dalton, CEO of Protea Place which is being set up in Guy St.

Bonus in Christmas paypackets

Queensland nurses and midwives will receive a pay rise just in time for Christmas, “thanks to a landmark enterprise bargaining agreement reached with the Palaszczuk Government” they are spruikng.
Health and Ambulance Services Minister Yvette D’Ath said the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission had certified the new agreement, which includes a wage deal for Queensland Health nurses and midwives that will see them become some of the highest paid in the country.
“The first increased pay packet for nurses will be paid to nurses and midwives in the week leading up to Christmas,” Minister D’Ath said.
“The pay increase of four per cent will be backdated to 1 April 2022 and paid in a lump sum to nurses and midwives just in time for Christmas. The agreement includes a wage increase of 4%, 4% and 3% over three years and a cost-of-living adjustment payment each year of the agreement (capped at 3%) if CPI in the relevant year is higher than the base wage increase.
Ms D’Ath reminded attentive listeners that the LNP “sacked 1800 nurses and midwives when they were last in government”.
“Of the nurses and midwives’ who voted in the ballot, 92 per cent voted in favour of the enterprise bargaining agreement, an overwhelming endorsement of the Palaszczuk Government’s deal,” she continued.
“The ballot for the agreement included about 55,000 Queensland Health nurses and midwives, and about 42 per cent of them voted which is a great turnout.
“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to providing good jobs and better services to enhance our great Queensland lifestyle, and this new enterprise bargaining agreement is further evidence of that.”
The enterprise bargaining agreement for nurses and midwives is also said to include improvements such as “Sunday penalty rates increasing to double time up from one and three-quarter time, and no annual leave deducted on public holidays” a report stipulated.
On being inducted into the Australian Rodeo Hall of Fame in October this year, Jack Sullivan said, “To be inducted into the Australian Rodeo Hall of Fame is a great honour for me because it recognises the rich history of the APRA, its predecessor the ARRA and the men who founded them.”
Jack goes on further to say, “The Australian Rough Riders Association (the ARRA) was founded by RM Williams after WWII. RM had seen a
rodeo put on by the American soldiers in Melbourne during the war and wanted to do the same here in Australia.”
This was the start of the association, in 1959 the first board of directors were saddle bronc riding - Jack Sullivan, bull riding - Vic Gough, bareback bronc riding - Kevin McTaggart; bulldoggingNeville Shiel and ropingDan Crotty.
As Jack had spent most of his life on horseback his inclusion on the original board was just another way, he could continue to do something he loved. He worked in the outback riding the outback stock routes of the Northern
Territory and Queensland. As a ringer he worked breaking in and training thoroughbred race horses. His skills stood him in good steed and he excelled in the rodeo arena riding bucking horses.
As with most associations he ended up serving a few terms as an event director and was instrumental in rewriting the rule book and being in the International Bronc Saddle. Today this saddle is used in Rodeos all around Australia.
At 93 years of age, Jack Sullivan is proud of his contribution in helping the late RM Williams to realise his vision.

Unfortunately, the very popular Carols performer, Erin Hilton, was unwell and couldn’t participate but another crowd favourite in Melissa Reid stepped
mance on the night, singing her own program of songs as well as Erin’s. Special mention must go to Lucy Boland who was outstand ing with her selection of carols. What was the most popular part of the night? No doubt in the children’s minds – it was the appearance by Santa Claus! Very well done to the rest of the performers - the East Street Singers, Warwick City Band, The Dance Centre, Chapter 3, The Fern Brothers, Jada and Shardae Wright, CJ, Phil Vellacott, Clayton Vellacott, Jill Hulme and Matt Shield. It was great to have

One of history’s best kept military secrets was… the wheelbarrow! In ancient China, farmers used wheelbarrows to take their goods to market, but they also doubled as a military tool for transporting goods and wounded, and as mobile barricades. They were referred to in code as ‘wooden oxes’.

Redcliffe Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett once said at a workshop that you can’t do anything about the past but the important thing is to think about the future.
That is the message I need to get my head around when I see a strainer post splitting after just 30 years on our farm.
Some primary producers do the extra and put tin on top of the post to keep the rain and sun out which probably doubles the life of the post.
One producer who went the extra mile with his fencing was the late Phil Cleary, of Mountain Station, Greymare.
With one helper, I did a lot of fencing up to 32 years ago when I joined the Daily News as sports reporter/sports editor.
There was no time for new fencing then as sport on the Southern Downs was more than a nine to five job and much more than 38 hours a week.
I did some maintenance and cattle work on the farm but not much new fencing. The post could have been put in by Colin McDonnell, his son Peter and brother Malcolm.
A few days ago, I spotted a cracked strainer that had been in for 30 odd years which was the
worse for wear.
It will probably see me into my 80s but our boys will have to replace it down the track.
The Long Paddock
with Gerard Walsh
Now, we can still put tin on the top to stop any more water getting into the top of the strainer.
There is a pear growing on top of the post which I have removed.
Talking about extending the life of timber, we have a small jetty on a dam at Greymare and after 14 years I am still to paint it with something to preserve the timber.
It was build in 2008, I always remember the date as I was working on the jetty when I heard on the radio at 6am on a Sunday about four young people being killed in an accident at the Eight Mile.
I later found out the four were Warwick Cowboys players Brett McKenzie, Nick Nolan, Max Thorley and Brett’s girlfriend Abby Ezzy.
The jetty was built by Paul Hallman who did a fabulous job with a bit of help from me. We are planning to put some shade cloth on the western side of the jetty so we can use it at Christmas time.
It is the biggest dam on our property and was built between two small hills. My father Tom Walsh always said it was a good dam site and 36 years after he passed away we put the dam exactly where he said.
Foreign affairs
This week, I pay tribute to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong for the way they are handling relations with overseas countries.
They have particularly done a good job in the Pacific.
I might be a conservative voter but felt the Coalition was slow to react when China signed agreements with the Solomon Islands.
We should have sent the Foreign Minister there immediately.
I also believe we are much better being close to China than arguing as they are a major trading partner.
You have only got to look at new cars to see how many makes come from China.
It is an important country when it comes to exporting our primary products.now.

Last Wednesday we celebrated our year of golf with a fun 9 hole competition followed by our Christmas lunch and our final presentation of major trophies for the year. Winners on the day were Anna, Wendy, Janet and Vicki. Runners-up were Lyn, Jan B, Helen and Jill on a countback from Liz, Molly, Jan A and Gill. Pins went to Janine, Jan B and Narelle on the 7th and on the 9th, Anna, Ellie and Melanie. Mary and Helen were the best dressed team on the day. We have two major trophies of the year, The Winter Cup and the Gillam Family memorial. One is for Saturday games and the other Wednesday. Points are awarded for wins (5) and runner-ups (3) on the day as well as each playing receiving one point for playing. One of the few women to have won both trophies in the one year was this year’s winner, Judy Lester. This is an outstanding achievement and very well deserved for well played golf all year. Anne Lyons was our Medal of Medalist. The Qld Brooch went to Judy (Div 1), Kath Devereux (Div 2) and Carole
Brandon (Div 3). The international Bowl again went to Judy (Div 1), Di Johnston (Div 2) and Roslyn Darton (Div 3).
Eclectic winners were, Red course, Anna Cox, Trish Roberts, Carole Brandon. White course Melanie McLennan, Majella Kahler and Carole. Our gobble Queen this year is Helen Olsen with 14 ahead of Carole, Judy and Mel who all had 12. So thank you so all our wonderful sponsors throughout the year and thanks to all of you who have supported these businesses throughout the year.
Saturday saw 11 ladies take to the course with Michelle Wright
on 40 points the winner ahead of Kath Devereux with 39. Thanks to The Coffee Club for sponsoring our last Ladies game of the year. Balls went to Mary Young 36, Narelle Norris, Ann Tomkins 33, Tub Ingall, Helen Olsen 32 and Anne Lyons 31. The pin on the 7th went to Tub Ingall, Judy Lester and Mary Young.
Sunday was our much anticipated Sudz Shootout. We had a couple of people who were unable to play so lucky Wendy Rhea and Di Evans made it into the top 19 on Saturday. We started with 19 excited and very nervous ladies on the first tee in our lovely new white shirts, thanks to
Vicki and Terry from Sudz. Sharon Cooper was first out losing in a chip off to Lyn McKillop. Judy Lester found that sometimes it’s not worth it to play safe from a bunker and lost a chip off to Mary Young. Unfortunately Mary couldn’t survive another on 3 and Di Johnston found too many tress going up 4. Melanie McLennan had bunker trouble on 5 and Carole Brandon left us on 6. Yvonne Pinington succumbed to her earlier illness and withdrew on the 7th. After her only bad shot of the day Lyn was knocked out on 8 and Narelle Norris failed to hit the green on the 9th in her 4 way chip off with Marg Adcock, Danielle Seibel

In hot, windy conditions on Wednesday 7th December two games of Social Bowls were played. In the first game the team of David
Rose, Jack Bell and Peter Smith narrowly defeated D.Rose, John Graham and Peter Smith 15 shots to 11. In the other game Helen Jones, Robyn Smith and Len Girgenti proved too strong for Polly Lay, Luisa Girgenti and Greg Hammond running out eventual winners 21 to 15.
In pleasant weather conditions on Saturday 10th December, Bruno Stefanon and John Fairley outplayed the pairs team of Polly Lay and Brian Brown by 23 shots to 15 and in the game of triples Sylean Fairley, Rocky Thompson and Len Girgenti went down to the team of Robyn Rose, Peter Smith and David Rose 16 shots to 20 after scores were locked at 16 all before the two final ends.
The long awaited A Men Singles final was also held on Saturday.
Congratulations go out to Len Girgenti who defeated Tom Hodgson by 25 shots to 14. Len started the game slowly and at the halfway mark was down by 11 shots to 4. From that point on Len managed to get the radar working well and ended up winning the game quite comfortably.
Thank you to President David Rose who gave up his time to mark the game.
At Thursday night’s “Twilight Bowls” three games of triples were played and the results are as follows. Peter Smith’s team narrowly defeated Jack Bell’s team 11 shots to 10. Brian Brown’s team defeated David Roses’ team 13 to 10 and in the final game Robyn Smith’s team went down to Polly Lay’s team 9 shots to 14.
Due to a function being held at the Club this Thursday night the 15th December “Twilight Bowls’’ has been rescheduled for Wednesday night 14th December commencing at 6.30pm. Please note that this will be the final “Twilight Bowls” for 2022 and will recommence in the on Thursday 5th of January 2023. We hope to see you all back in the New year. and Maria Carey. Roslyn Darton left on the 10th and Kath Devereux on the 11th. Anne Lyons had been playing beautifully all day but the bunker on 12 claimed her and the the 7 remaining ladies were all involved in a chip off on 13. It was a really difficult placement and Maria failed on her second attempt against Wendy Rhea. Trish Roberts went out on 14 and Di Evans lost to Wendy on 15. The 16th is always hard for A Graders without a shot and this proved again to be the case when Danielle lost with a 4. Jill Barnes had played steadily all day but the 17th green let her down when her ball lipped out. This left Marg and Wendy to battle it out up 18. Wendy, playing off 32, had left her best golf of the year for the shootout but Marg, playing off 14, had too much experience and finished her day with a lovely par. Congratulations Marg on being Shootout Champion for only the second time.
We will now have a break over the next month and resume with our January monthly medal on the 7th. Merry Christmas to all and we look forward another fun filled year at The Warwick Golf Club.

A “strange day” for Sporters members
Last Wednesday was a very strange day for Sporters members playing in the pro shop stoke round with 71 starters but only 64 made it to the finish line.
Showing the ongoing benefit of retirement, the Loin King aka Ross Bell roared home with a 63 nett off his 14 handicap ( but not for long, eh Mr Golflink?) from the unlucky Mark Simmonds whose 64/13 looked the early winner of the choccies.
The ball rundown; Peter Wright 65 ( with Bellie’s voice still ringing in his ears!), our usual columnist Garry Hanson 65, Charlie Morrison 66, Don Iedema 67, and the following on 68 were John Urwin/Cec Watts/Doug Wilson and Wayne Foster.
Pro pin on 13 – Garry 2 Name $20, Bill Morrison $15, Evan Pfeffer $10 and the reticent Neville Heard $5.
NTP’s – Clive Pulley on 5th, Feathers on 7th, James Bradshaw on 9 & 11, and Garry Millard on 16th.
We believe that aliens had overflown the course that day with Clive Pulley and Gary Adcock succumbing early to injury and
withdrawing. The little green men then focused on our Buggy Boys, changing a chicken sandwich ( don’t ask!), making one of the buggies die, and causing a search for 3 misplaced balls on the front nine!! They then shot a beam of magnetism at one of the forsaken group, causing his club to fly out of his hand and all the way into the 15th big dam! Damn!! There was some suggestion of the owner of the club doing a Bondi rescue but the cow cocky, in a magnificent McGyver moment, rescued the imperiled club with a adhoc joining of two green flagpoles and some rope!! By this time, our Buggy Boys were beyond redemp-
tion so withdrew to the clubhouse for the partaking of appropriate medication! And then in a parting gesture, the LGM (little green men) caused a minor earthquake that caused Charlie Morrison to go AOH in the breezeway ! double damn!!!
All Sporters members are reminded that our annual Christmas party is on Wednesday 21/12/22 in the format of a 2 Ball ambrose, with a shotgun start at 11.30am, followed by drinks and nibbles apres golf. Please try and be at the pro shop early to allow Troy to maintain the remaining coiffure!

A football game with a difference
Selina Venier editor@thedailyjournal.ink
There’s a match worth pulling up a picnic blanket for this Sunday, 18th December. It’s the iComply Cup, to be held at The International Club in Stanthorpe, at 4pm.
iComply Horticultural Compliance, an approved employer under the PALM (Pacific Australia Labour Mobility) Scheme, will host the Icomply Football Cup in Stanthorpe. Their Vanuatu Seasonal Workers will play against their Solomon Island Seasonal Workers in what’s shaping up to be a competitive and colourful event.
Company CEO Rodney Prestia said the idea of hosting “came about on a recent trip to Vanautu which coincided with the launching of the FIFA World Cup”.
“I was in Port Vila (Vanuatu) and there was a street parade for the launching of the World Cup,” Mr Prestia said.
“I felt like I was at the World Cupthere were thousands of Vanautu citizens lining the streets of Vila, cheering on as the parade passed through and even thousands more participating in the
parade, all representing the team they were supporting with the roads lined with flag from various competing nations.
It was like nothing I had ever seen in my life … (and) it was then I realised how fanatical the Ni Vans were about their football. I thought it would be nice to have a game in Australia to coincide with the World Cup.”
With 60 new Ni-Vanuatu workers arriving in Stanthorpe to join an additional 80 workers for PNG and Solomons, Mr Prestia hopes the game will “help the team bonding … (and) get the Solomon
Stanthorpe Golf
Quite a lot has been happening on the Stanthorpe golf course since the last report a few weeks ago. The ‘Golfer of the Year’ awards were finalised, the winners were presented with their trophies. Based on frequency of play and consistency in scoring, the men’s winner was again Scott Constable, the third year in a row we think. At least the rest are getting closer with runner up, Aaron Simmers, getting to within 2 points of Scott. The ladies winner was Lisa Stuart who had a slightly larger lead over runner up, Nikki Waterworth. The next year Golfer of the Year begins with the first single event in 2023.
Competition last Saturday was an individual stableford event sponsored by Aqua Rural and the club thanks them for the trophies on the day. A tie at the top with Greg Fraser and Richard Reardon both returning 39 points and the count back going in favour of Greg. Another tie in the ladies event with Margie Locke getting the better over Lyn
Ludlow after the count back.
Men’s pin shots and approaches were shared around with Matt Waterworth, Rino Piovesan, Barry Hughes, David Burgess, Scott Constable and Ivan Jurris all receiving a voucher. Mei Bell collected for the ladies at 12 and 17. Birdies nest was not claimed.
In the run down, Brad Silver, David Burgess, Angelo Maugeri, Wes Smith and Nathan Stibbard all collected.
As we get close to the festive season, notice is out that the time sheet for the Boxing Day Classic is posted. The event is again a three person ambrose sponsored by Wes Smith Building, Michael Hancock and Tony Herman, three very talented ex-rugby league players. The time sheet fills out quickly so if intending to play, nominate teams as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Next Saturday is an individual stroke event sponsored by absent members, Fiona Kelly and Mark Baker, who still holidaying somewhere in Victoria. Time sheet for this event is also on the board at the club.
boys to connect with the Vanuatu boys through sport”.
“The game itself will cost the company about $6000 but it’s money well spent,” he confirmed. “We have purchased everything for the teams from uniforms to training kits to football boots and shin guards, soccer balls, water bottles, everything that is required to host a professional soccer match.
“It’s been the talk of the company for the last three weeks and both teams finish work around 4pm, head back to their accommodation, get changed and go and train. It has been really uplifting to see both teams every afternoon rush to get into their training gear on then head down the fields - but not on the same field, both teams are very secretive about their tactics.”
Pastoral Care Manager for iComply, Charlie Grant, a UK national who played
football in the UK, has been said to “take charge” of coaching the Solomons team, whilst the CEO is coaching the Vanuatu team – in in all, making for an exciting game to come.
“We are aiming for this game to be played in the right competitive spirit and are expecting a fun afternoon where supporters can come and cheer for the team whilst also raising money for a great cause,” the men agreed.
The cost of entry to the iComply Cup is $5, the funds to support the Vineyard Christian Church in Stanthorpe, who have, in turn, supported the team members.
“We wanted to give something back to the church that gives so much to the seasonal worker community, so we have turned the iComply cup into a charity match,” Mr Prestia said.
“The Stanthorpe community is an amazing community. It’s obviously a farming region where they truly value the contribution of all seasonal workers.”
iComply has been noted to provide exceptional welfare and opportunities for the seasonal workers in their care.
A sausage sizzle and drinks will be available before, during and after the game with everything selling for $2.
Now to keeping those “secret tactics” secret. Not for long!
