Fire at Warwick State High
Staff Reports editor@thedailyjournal.ink
Paramedics were called to a fire at the northwest end of Warwick State High School on Sunday, 4th December, the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) confirmed of the blaze at 2.33am, their services, for tunately, not needed.
The Department of Education confirmed with our newspapers that the fire took place, and it “resulted in extensive damage to one of the school buildings”.
“The school is working with QPS and QFES in their investigations,” an Education Department
spokesperson said of the damage to Year 7 and 8 classrooms in a junior pre cinct.
This week, the school “reallocated the affected classes” and families were informed about the inci dent.
“Guidance Officer sup port is available to any stu dents that may require it,” the spokesperson further said. “The department is working with the school to ensure that the block will be ready for use by the end of the summer holidays. Schools are amongst our most precious community assets and we all have a role to play in keeping them safe.”
As the matter is under police investigation, the department encouraged assistance via the School Watch program, stating, “We ask all communities to report any suspicious activ ities at a school by calling the police or School Watch on 13 17 88.”
Members of the school community have told our newspapers that they are “very disappointed” as to the incident and clean up involved considering the end-of-year timing and the successful results of the 2022 educational year.
The damage to the school is visible at the corner of Victoria and Guy Streets in Warwick.
Firies in the family

It was quite a homecoming in the past fortnight for Ben Sullivan before report ing for duty on Monday, November 28th as a fully-fledged firefighter at QFES Warwick station.
But a visit to the local fire station is nothing new for the well-known Warwick local, who served as an auxilia ry firefighter for over two years before receiving the call up to the QFES Whyte Island training facility in Brisbane enroute to a career in permanent fire fighter ranks.
He graduated on Friday, November 25th with 16 other new firies to circu late across Queensland’s permanently
staffed stations.
It was a magic moment for Ben, and also welcomed proudly by his father and now fellow firefighter Mark.
Both father and son have teamed up as firies at Warwick station, laying the groundwork of a family tradition.
Indeed, the Warwick Fire Station, both current and previous is familiar ground for Ben, who has enjoyed a childhood many youngsters dream of among the ‘Big Red’ trucks, wearing fire helmets and the occasional operation of a fire hose.
Currently Dad pulls some rank on his eldest son, a Senior Firefighter with 30 year’s experience.
But rank isn’t the present priority for the Warwick Station’s newest recruit
is focused on the challenge of a rewarding career and becoming a key team member among Dad and

Letters to the Editor
Books, books, books...
On behalf of Sunshine Rotary Warwick, I would like to thank everyone who recently came along and purchased books at our very successful book sale. The fundraising for the week end totalled $1,300. This money will go towards send ing two young local people to Rotary leadership camps.

Letter regard-
ing Viv Forbes
A letter to the Editor has just been brought to my attention. It is of some con cern to note one of your cor respondents, Michelle Conkas, has written to you disparaging the work of Viv Forbes. I happen to know Viv, from 1957, when we both lived in the same lowbudget hostel, living off lowbudget government scholar ships that barely covered the rent. Viv had won an Open Scholarship and almost topped the State in the University Entrance exam. He graduated in Geology with High Distinctions and Distinctions in his subjects. We were both conscripted into National Service and learned that a small dose of the loss of liberty is a won derful antidote to the dis ease of a total loss of liberty. He then married a wonder ful wife and raised a family of which they are justifiably
proud. But he also spent a great deal of time in his orig inal profession, camping outback, discovering, map ping and defining the min eral resources that have given Michelle Conkas and all of us an unprecedented lifestyle.
He then went on to work on the economics of living and to share his knowledge. It would be great if Michelle and the editorial staff of your august publication could take time to read and under
stand just some of the Saltbush Club articles.
The Saltbush Club is not a ‘climate sceptic organisa tion’. It is a common sense forum, not controlled by overseas charlatans who promote unfounded fear to terrify children and thrive on obscene profits from selling us short-shelf-life wind tur bines and solar panels made in China that our children will be still paying off while these monuments to stupid ity can’t even be afforded a

decent burial. Who am I to comment? Just an 83 year old civil engi neer who has enormous respect for an old mate and truly great Australian. Check on the internet ‘The Epoch Times John McRobert’ for more background.
John McRobert Indooroopilly, Brisbane
Editor’s opinion: No disrespect, John, but I’m not sure I would be referencing the Epoch Times, which is backed by the quasi reli gious Chinese Falun Gong move ment. Wind generators are not necessarily short-lived (think the windmills that pump water rust ing in our fields and still sucking up water from deep below) and solar panels don’t all come from China. You can buy Aussie-made solar panels from Tindo Solar, Japanese ones from Panasonic and Solar Frontier etc. And final ly, one thing is not in dispute: coal and oil once mined and burnt to make energy can’t be recycled; steel, plastic, rubber, aluminium, copper, glass--the things that make up solar panels and wind generators can.

fellow staff members.
Life is somewhat different in the emer gency services compared to his former career in the air conditioning trade.
Ben’s new career will see him engaged in training, achieving core skills, assess ments and examinations as he climbs the rank ladder preparing for a role where every job is different and demanding.
The Sullivan household can certainly
be considered to have a focus on com munity wellbeing, Ben’s partner a Warwick based female police officer.
While his QFES career is at the fore front, we’ll be seeing the highly rated rugby league identity returning to the field with the Warwick Cowboys to con tinue a football involvement that has taken him across the nation and globe.

Book worms rejoice!
Deborah Wheeler editor@thedailyjournal.ink
Neil & Dell Maxwell (pic tured, below) were ready for the vast number of book worms who turned up to grab a bargain at Sunrise Rotary Club Warwick’s mas sive book sale over two big days recently. President of Rotary Club of Sunrise Warwick, Tracy Sexton said they hoped to greatly reduce the large quantity of stock they had on hand.
The club is in the process of funding five young locals to go to motivational camps run by Rotary. The cost for each student to attend is $700, so every book sold goes towards making sure these young people get to have a wonderful experi ence. The club is very grate ful for the support of the local community.
Local, Jim McNamara commented, “The reason I like coming to the Rotary book sale is for the wide variety of books you can choose from and you can be sure to find something you are looking for. The
added bonus is the great price. Holding the book sale at the new facility is great as there is more room and plenty of parking.” Jim came prepared with a list of authors given to him for his wife and was set to have a happy time shopping for books.
Dell Maxwell said, “We appreciated all the times Norm Betts donated his building to us over the years in order for us to have our book sales. The beauty of having a permanent build ing here in Tooth Street means we don’t have to pack and unpack the hun dreds of books we have donated to us. This sale has come about because recent
ly we received some very large donations. The Anglican Church of Stanthorpe is no longer holding their book sale so they donated six pallets of books to us. The book sale is getting bigger than Ben Hur now.”
New arrivals to town Sarah who moved to Warwick six months ago and her mother Hazel Stone who only moved to Warwick two days before the sale were keen to grab some good books to read at bar gain basement prices.
This reporter was more than happy to contribute to the fundraising by purchas ing a big bag of books.

To EV or not to EV
Maybe it’s just my perception, but lately, it seems like every second commercial between programs on TV is for this or that electric vehicle, hybrid or whatever. I suppose that’s just marketing and to be honest, I don’t mind the innovation and the increased choices in the “EV” market.
In the last 12 months we bought a pair of brand new “petrol powered” cars for our driving school. At the time we bought them, availability was one of the biggest factors in our choice.
Prior to that purchase, I had given a hybrid plenty of thought. I’m sorry to any Prius owners out there, but I couldn’t have ever seen myself in one of them. To me the styling was way too reminiscent of the
Citroen DS from the 1960s.
I suppose I need to apologise to owners of the Citroen too, what I always thought was a car that looked like a cockroach, but they’re probably used to it by now.
Anyway, I would have seriously looked at Toyota’s Hybrid Corolla, but availability was the issue with COVID impacting on supply.
Hopefully by the time we buy another car they might be a more readily available option because I’d like to buy one for the fleet.
A fully electric car though? Geez, I don’t know. I like the idea of them but am concerned about being inhibited by the availability of an electrical charging source, particularly in remote areas.
The biggest factor in any scepticism that I have at the moment comes down to the ability to make a fully informed decision about one, particularly relating to the use of “emissions free” and “clean” etc in the marketing.
Sure, if you are charging a fully electric vehicle off your “off-grid” solar system, or live in Tasmania that have a grid mostly powered by Hydroelectricity you can claim being emissions free
without much argument, but what if you charge from a grid that is energised via fossil fuels. That’s taking it a bit far. (In my opinion.)
So where do I get the information from? The internet? Yes. Newspapers and publications? Yes. TV or other audio visual media? Yes. Our government? Yes.
I’ve seen plenty of pros and cons brought up in arguments. A lot of it however seems to have an extreme slant one way or the other with limited middle ground. Even government information does this. Skewed by policy platforms and political positions. Maybe I’m missing something, but until I find it, I’ll stick to neutrality.
Hence, why I like the idea of a hybrid. Those things make a bit of electricity through their own systems and therefor cut fuel usage and emissions that way.
Until then I can’t seem to get the image of an EV recharging station with a giant diesel generator going full noise and belching black smoke charging it.
Hey, but at least I’m prepared to take that first step.

COLUMN CENTIMETRES
My face is burned by pixels exploding in my face in the early morning air.
I got up this morning at 1am to watch the Argentina Australia match in a most unusual location. I got dressed and wandered downstairs in the office here just south of the town of Char Fasson (pronounced ‘fashion’ and possibly not by chance), and walked with our manager around a kilometre to the main town square where a giant square lake has been built, filled, and then salted and peppered with litter.
To the north west point of the square lake is the entrance to a ‘fantasy park’ where the local Bangladeshi children who have parents on government payrolls can afford to go for fun… Garish colours, giant concrete statues of animals, and a ferris wheel or two with rust in its bones and no oil in its veins. Near the gate, newly erected, is a television about the size of three billboards stacked side by side, on their side.
Assembled in front of the screen were over a thousand young Bangladeshi men, about 5% of them armed with vuvuzelas (which sounds sinister, but is in fact that plastic horn introduced to the world at the South Africa World Cup).
The horns, working as one, create a wall of sound like a bees caught inside a rock concert amplifier. Even though my ears are full of wax caused by the humidity and sweatiness of this environment, it was earsplitting. For reasons that
no-one has been able to fully explain to me, millions of Bangladeshis are obsessed with the Argentinian football team… and millions more by the Brazilian team.
Australia had one tall white fan in this crowd of men wearing extremely badly spelt and sewn replica shirts, seconds from the knock-off factory.
Before, after and during the match men were sidling up to me to take selfies, some on cheapie phones which aren’t made for night shots of black men (the results showed a dark blur next to a crazed looking white fella trying to keep his eyes on two screens at once) and some on pricey numbers that turned my photos instantly into Insta hero shots. (There’s obviously money in them thar mud for some at least….)
It was an experience like no other. Standing on concrete amongst Messimad men beside a fake lake beneath a giant screen that bakshish built, I have to say I was a proud Aussie. A team of nearly nobodies played a strong, structured, disciplined game against a team of millionaire superstars, and held the line for ninety minutes. It was a loss for the ages….

Pratten Pub & Grub closes
Deborah Wheeler editor@thedailyjournal.ink
The Pub & Grub was the only shop left in the once thriving town ship of Pratten and so its closure is a significant loss to the local com munity.
Owner Neita Weir spoke with the Town & Country Journal recently and said, “It was a great shame the business had to close but we had
outgrown the building. The last weekend of trading, we were rushed off our feet. The number of people travelling through, who stopped for something to eat and drink, was great.”
“We have decided to donate all of our left-over stock to the Warwick Community Food Van. There is too much food to let it go to waste.”
The building sits on a former pub site.
Killarney Christmas thank you

The Killarney RSL Sub Branch had their annual Christmas get together on Sunday 4th December. Those in attendance were fortunate to hear the stirring notes of the bagpipe skilful ly played by Rory Macfarlane. Earlier this year, Rory was one of five SCOTS PGC College students chosen to
play the bagpipes at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle in Scotland.
President Jim Simons thanked everyone who had helped the small Sub Branch in some way during the year. Over the next two years, the club will be concentrat ing on compiling a book to mark the 100th anniversary of the unveiling of the Tannymorel Cenotaph and
also compiling as much information as possible on the Lincoln bomber disaster on Mt Superbus. The 9th April 2025 will mark the 70th anniversary of the trag edy where all on board lost their lives.

Allora bull sale, 8 Dec
Deborah Wheeler editor@thedailyjournal.ink
Born and bred on the land, Elizabeth Piggott has been breed ing Santa Gertrudis cattle for over 20 years at Bolivia, just south of Tenterfield. Rosevale Park Santa Gertrudis have been selling up around the Warwick area for many years. For eight years, Elizabeth also ran the Warwick Santa Gertrudis sale at the saleyards.
“We sell a lot of stock in Toowoomba but decided to hold our sale for this year in Allora,” she told us. “From the enquiries we have had there are quite a number of buyers out there look ing for good fit ready-to-work
bulls. We have stud and commer cial bulls and stud and commercial females on offer. Our clients cover a diverse range of business es and come from far north Queensland to northern New South Wales. Recently we sold a few bulls into the Proston area.”
During the drought, framers found it very tough to deal with the loss of stock. From 2014 to early 2020, there was only one year where farmers in the Bolivia area received any decent rain. It was a constant struggle, making the decision to reduce stock and having to hand feed hay to the remaining stock.
Elizabeth said, “I even had the cattle out on the road for periods of time. I would have them out
during the summer months and take them back in during the win ter months. In the spring those calving stayed in the paddocks and the others went back on the road. It was heartbreaking to have to sell a truck load of cattle in order to buy hay to feed the skin ny ones who were left. It was pretty tough towards the end.” She continued, “When the rains finally came, the land was so dry it just sucked it up and washed a lot of silt into the dams. The good news is our stocks are now almost back to normal. You just wonder if you should fully restock after such an experience. There is always a niggle of doubt in the back of your mind.”
Tannymorel market success
Deborah Wheeler editor@thedailyjournal.ink
The weather smiled on the Tannymorel Markets on Saturday 26th November. One of the visitors commented to the Town & Country Journal on how well organised the day was. Good crowds supported the event. The garage sale was set up out side with dozens of stall holders showcasing their goods. There was plenty of room and it was easy to get around to see all of the items on dis play. All of the old items were walk ing out the door like cream cans and horse yokes. There were some beauti
ful buggies which had been done up nicely.
There were more stalls in the hall and the Mt Collery CWA had an amazing array of Christmas craft items for sale and plenty of home made cooking. Lots of crafts, flowers, rose bushes, and food with a sausage sizzle and the Cancer Council run ning a bacon & egg burger staff. Other popular displays included the Vintage car display and line dancing. Santa arrived in his dune buggy, com plete with his surf board. The organ isers did a wonderful job, the market was very well run and it was well supported.

New outlets in Warwick
Deborah Wheeler editor@thedailyjournal.ink
I have lived in my home (on the Southern Downs) for almost ten years now and
this is the first time I have witnessed the moment, just before our large cactus opens up in flower. Normally the plant flowers at night and the flower closes and dies as soon as the sun starts to
come out. Thanks to the overcast weather we recently experienced, I was able to capture this miracle of nature. Enjoy the moment, I certainly did.

Christmas in the UK
Selina Venier editor@thedailyjournal.ink
Mary and Alun Roberts won’t be experiencing an Aussie Christmas this year, instead spending the holidays travelling aboard in Europe and the UK, in what is shaping up to be the family holiday of their lifetimes.
In the photo from our free Town and Country Journal newspaper last week, the Roberts’ weren’t pictured at a Granite Belt vineyard but instead, a vineyard in Cuisles, Champagne, their “first stop”.
The day after, 2nd December, they were in Hottingen, Bavaria, and on Christmas Day, are plan ning to be in London, at Alun’s brother’s home. The Southern Downs Principal said he hasn’t been with his side of the family for Christmas for 15 years and his wife was the key to making the trip happen.
“This trip has been some years in the planning and we always knew that when we visited Alun’s family, we also wanted to share some of the culture and history of continental Europe

“France and Germany were chosen because of their rich history, particularly medieval and World War I. The children
are learning about these eras in school, equally we’re teaching it, so it’s an excellent opportunity for us to see, touch and feel what we’ve learnt from books, through stories and online. The culture is also something we’d
like our chil dren to have an apprecia tion for –that people across the world may live differ ently or speak differ ently, but that we’re funda mentally all the same.”
Time in Scotland also calls, espe cially because that’s where the couple married, and Wales will be home, too, as it’s where Alun was born.
“We love hiking and running where we can, so we’ll incorpo rate some outdoor activities, weather permitting,” Mary con tinued.
“We hope to see some snow, but on the other hand, not look
ing forward to the cold. We’re looking forward to a northern hemisphere Christmas, the lights and traditions that seem to fit so well in the cold climate.”
Alun’s family will delight in catching up with older daughter Grace, twins Patrick and William, as well as their young est, Hannah, some meeting her for the first time.
“This is an amazing opportu nity for some of his family to meet grandchildren or nieces or nephews for the first time, and for cousins to meet each other in person, rather than over the internet, across time zones,” Mary said.
What will they miss?
“We’ll miss the warm weather and summer in Australia,” they agreed. “We’ll miss our friends, family and community of Stanthorpe too, and we look forward to celebrating in the new year with them.”
Read Friday’s editions for an insight into what Grace, 14, Patrick, William, twins aged 12, and Hannah, aged 6, who are all pictured with their parents, Mary and Alun, are gleaning for this trip of their dreams.

Warwick Shire Woodcrafters President, Ian Brown, was happy to share details of some of the work they have done for the community in the past.
“The main thing was have been asked to make have been memorial trophies for members of our local community who have passed on,” he said. “This is very rewarding work because it brings a great sense of pride to be able to help families, groups and associations con tinue the legacy of the person who the trophy is dedicated to.”
The Woodcrafters share the same grounds as the Warwick Men’s Shed in Activity.

2022 Jumpers and Jazz: President’s report
Contributed
We successfully delivered a 2022 Festival in spite of the challenges that mother nature threw at us. I acknowledge the commitment and co-operation from the JJJ Management Committee, the Potters, the local businesses and Southern Downs Regional Council in overcoming some of those challenges.
Another thank you goes to the Warwick Art Gallery (both committee and staff) who we work together with through out the year. The Art Gallery is responsible for the tree jumper competition/exhibition and fibre art workshops which are an integral part of the festival.
Also the Yarntopians for their fabulous display.
I would also like to acknowledge our wonderful volunteers without whom we would not be able to put on the festival. This year illness depleted our ranks and I hope all have now fully recovered. Thank you
volunteers we can’t do this without you.
From a successful grant from the Southern Downs Regional Council last year, we were able to secure the services of a videographer, Pete Murray. Mr Murray has put together a series of videos of the region which we were, again, able to use to promote not only Jumpers and Jazz but the region as a whole, You may have noticed that there are several new committee member positions again this year. This is the result of the recommendations from the Tilman Group who devised our Strategic Revitalisation Plan 2022 to 2026.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated members of this years Management Committee. With everything that was thrown at us again this year, I could not have asked for a better team to work through those challenges. Thank you.
As the Management Committee for 2023 is elected, I
believe that the groundwork has been and is being laid for future festivals. There will be challenges but I am sure, with support, we
will overcome these and again provide another fantastic Jumpers and Jazz in July festival in 2023.

Last Wednesday, 30th November, 13 brave ladies battled the conditions in a stableford event sponsored by The Sporters. Di Johnston contin ued her good form with a great 39 points. Helen Olsen was runner up with 34 points. Balls in the run down went to Carole Brandon, Jill Barnes 33, Judy Lester 32 and Ann Tomkins 30. The Pro Pin went to Jill, Mary Young and Lyn McKillop. Mary also won the best front 9 with 19 points. Other scores were, Lyn McKillop 30, Anne Lyons 28, Janine Stewart 27, Vicki Bennett 26, Jan Aspinall 21 and Lois Wilson 16 on the front 9.
Saturday was our Medal of Medalist day with a stroke event in conjunction. Eighteen of the medal winners through out the year contested this honour board event in really windy and cool conditions with Anne Lyons blitzing the field with a terrific 68 nett. This is Anne’s first honour board win and she was thrilled. The win ner of the competition of the day was none other than Di Johnston on a count back from Narelle Norris with 71. These two have been dominating our
comps over the past couple of weeks and are in fine form heading into Sunday’s shoot out. Balls in the rundown went to Judy Lester 74, Kath Devereux, Carole Brandon 75, Danielle Seibel, Ann Tomkins 76 and Vicki Bennett 77. Graded pins went to Narelle, Maria Carey and Jan Aspinall. Di Johnston, Yvonne Pinington, Ann Tomkins and Narelle Norris won the Pro Pin. Other scores were Mary Young, Jill Barnes 77, Roslyn Darton, Melanie McLennan 78, Lyn McKillop 79, Yvonne Pinington 80, Maria Carey 81, Di Evans 82, Marg Adcock, Di Macdonald 83, Wendy Rhea, Helen Olsen 87, Jan Aspinall and Trish Roberts.
Sunday (4th December) was our Annual General Meeting. Marg Adcock was re-elected as President, Wendy Rhea Vice
President, Roslyn Darton Captain, Lyn McKillop Secretary and Melanie McLennan, Michelle Wright and Narelle Norris are committee members. Thank you to those who attended and for your input into next years golf. Our final event for the year is Sunday’s shoot out. To the 19 ladies who made it, good luck and please be at the clubhouse by 8.30 when Vicki and Terry from Sudz will present every one with their shirts. Who knows what the colour this year will be? Vicki says to please wear black bottoms. Hit off will be a t 9am, following the mens event. Our calcutta will be held on Friday night (9th December). Tickets are on sale now at $5 per ticket. Wendy has booked a table, so please let her know if you intend to stay on for dinner after the cal cutta is drawn. It will be a great night to catch up with those who are unable to come to the Christmas Party on Wednesday. The night is for all members and their partners. We look forward to Sunday afternoon to see who this year’s winner will be.

T20 finals spots up for grabs
Tim Harslett
Souths are guaranteed the T20 cricket minor premiership in Stanthorpe and one spot in the final.
Wanderers basically have their destiny in their own hands. A win against Tenterfield at Shirley Park, Tenterfield, this weekend should be enough to secure sec ond.
Valleys have the bye and need Wanderers to go down and RSL to not smash Souths to retain their finals hopes
RSL need Wanderers to lose badly and also smash Souths which is an unlikely scenario.
Tenterfield can mathematically make it but they need to epically smash Wanderers and rely on Souths beating RSL which is the least likely for our possible sce nario.
The final of the T20 competi tion will be played under lights on December 16 at C.F. White Oval.
The next day from 2pm to as late at 10pm, Stanthorpe will play Warwick in a 50-over game to determine the second finalist in the Mitchell Shield competition.

the bowling positions around with the Leads going up to Skip, 3rd to 2nd and Skips to Lead. It was enjoyed by all, and good practice for everyone. Great
