- Diana Grant-Davie, Kelsey Nager, Abbey Racelis (University of San Diego) Challenging the status quo “diversity” and avoiding passing the work to our campus partners, USD CDev created a vetting system for employers’ diverse hiring requests. To connect marginalized students to employers who are looking to do more than “check a box” in regards to their diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, we have collaborated with our campus partners. We challenge the hiring & recruiting norms and empower students to ask similar questions in their interview phase.

Career Connections in Assessment Toward Equity - Dr. Joseph D. Levy (National Louis University) Knowing the necessity to combat educational inequities, this presentation will draw connections to assessment practice as a vehicle for change, where assessment actions infuse and promote equity in relation to a typical assessment cycle from a career service-related context (including practical examples). The presentation will include audience selfreflection, small group discussion, large group discussion, and Q&A in relation to a call to action for individuals to apply this information in their own practice.

Employers Tackle Diversity Recruiting: Insights from Recruiting Trends - Philip Gardner (Michigan State University), Stan Inman (University of Utah) Diversity recruiting, a central theme of Recruiting Trends (2016 and 2018,) revealed the employer context for approaches to recruiting diverse candidates. In response to conversations among the NACE Advisory Board members, Recruiting Trends 2021 included several questions DEI. Our newest questions examine technology in diversity recruiting in time of COVID, brand messaging and adjustments to current practices. Information from these surveys provide a rich foundation for an informative discussion.

Incorporating a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Lens in Career Counseling Practice - Tianna Ransom, Tavi Sookhoo (Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT) We seek to discuss how power and privilege appear within career counseling and will apply scholarly theories that encourage a DEI lens in practice. Through a case study and discussion participants will share and learn best practices.

Attendees will leave the session with tangible resources from facilitators and each other.

What does it actually take to surpass the bias against women that is embedded in academia? Learn how successful women leaders cultivate resilience, face adversity, and succeed against the odds!

Proactive and Inclusive Recruiting for Early Talent - Lauren Givens (PetSmart) The way we work, the way we educate, the way we enact socially has changed a lot in 2020. Learn how PetSmart got creative and innovated with their engagement with students to develop a Summer Experience that engaged with Senior Leaders and students to learn about the business and obtain critical soft skills from industry experts.

Inclusive Pathways to Foster Career Movement Between Higher Education & Industry - Espie Santiago (Uber), Christine Y. Cruzvergara (Handshake), Kate Dey (DocuSign), Chris Milliken (University of Washington) How many of you have thought about transitioning to another area of our profession? Do you know how to make this career change? How can we, as a profession, promote more growth and development for you? Can we be more inclusive when considering applicants within our network? To answer these questions and more, a panel of those who have transitioned between higher education and industry will discuss strategies to successfully change careers within our profession.

An Update: Centering Diversity and Inclusion to Support All Students’ Dreams - Barbara Richardson, Katie Lloyd, Sam Boren (Colorado State University) Two years ago at MPACE, the Colorado State University Career Center presented on using the Multicultural Organization Development (MCOD) model to examine our identities, privileges, and actions including all Career Center services. We will share updates including our new organizational model, updated initiatives including the Social Justice Career Education model and Employer Diversity Toolkit, and our belief of the imperative nature of this work to serve ALL of our students.

2:00 pm - 3:00 pm BREAKOUT SESSION 3 Engaged Employer Symposium - An Employer Learning Model Advancing Social Justice in the Workplace - Carol Lwali (Seattle University) Join this session and learn how to develop an employer leaning program focused on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging. It will cover how Seattle University’s Engaged Employer Symposium was developed, implemented, and evaluated. After this session you will - Have a framework to design your own DEI employer learning program; Equip attendees with skills and knowledge to cultivate employer engagement through a social justice lens; And add to their toolkits new a tool for employer development.

Neurodiversity Awareness, Strengths, and Advocacy within Higher Education & the Workplace - Betina Wildhaber, M.A., Josephine Blagrave, Ph.D (Chico State) This presentation promotes awareness of our neurodiverse community, identifies strengths a neurodivergent student or employee brings, and how to advocate on campus or in your workplace, using Brofenbrenner’s Social-Ecological Model. Additionally, various online neurodiversity resources will be provided to further the audience’s understanding of the neurodiversity community and how to implement change. This presentation directly relates to “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” conference theme and highlights a community that is easily overlooked and misunderstood in conversations of diversity.

Campus Employment: Transactional to Transformational - Sarah Roeder, Karri White (Colorado State University) First Generation students typically need to work on campus to even attend a four-year school. So how do you take oncampus work and have it go from a transactional experience to a transformative experience? Specifically, for students with multiple underserved identities? The answers are train the trainer method, diversity, equity, and inclusion lens as a necessity (not as a nice to have) and intentional partnerships!

Bridging the Gap from Education to Employment: UCR’s Pilot Internship Program with the Environmental Protection Agency - Sean Gil, Elizabeth Montgomery, Kristen Roberts (University of California, Riverside) How can we better prepare low income and first-generation college students to transition to career? Faculty, staff, and students worked to answer this question at the University of California, Riverside through design thinking sprints to rapidly develop prototypes, conduct empathy interviews with 170 students, and iterate. The Bridge Experience group internship program launched in summer 2020 in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency, UCR Career Center, faculty and graduate student mentors, and six amazing interns.

TRANSFORM. - MicroVention Shares Best Practices and Lesson’s Learned from creating a Hybrid/Virtual Internship Program - Meredith Entsminger (MicroVention) In the beginning of 2020 MicroVention had what they thought was a fool proof road map for their 2020 Summer Internship Program. As you may have suspected, MicroVention’s plans came to a screeching halt, when we realized the COVID-19 pandemic could greatly impact our world and our internship program. MicroVention decided to pivot and keep our internship program while many of our competitors chose to cancel their internship opportunities. We will share our best practices and lessons learned from creating a Hybrid/Virtual Internship Program that can be scalable to internship programs of all sizes.

Infusing Career Theory and Scholarly Research with Practice and Implementation: Designing and Delivering Tailored Career Services for Racial and Ethnic Minority Students - Roshni D. Lal (Marymount California University) Learn about theoretical frameworks, empirical research, tools, approaches, and resources that enable career counselors to design and deliver tailored career services through a multicultural and multiracial lens. Employers can utilize this material to engage in strategic, equitable, and inclusive recruitment and workplace practices. Implement methods that will provide students of color with the ability to engage in self-efficacy and self-advocacy when making informed career determinations. Understand the workforce wage, promotion, and job title disparity based on race and gender.

Engaging Student Communities and Employers Through Virtual Inclusive Events - Ron Gaschler, Patty Jagodzinsk, Becca Abel, Kathaleen Emery, Crystal Turner (Devry University) This informative and interactive presentation will discuss key strategies to brand Career Services throughout the many facets of the student community in a one-to-many approach. Additionally, attendees will learn valuable marketing techniques to enhance student awareness and branding of employers cultures and opportunities.

Creating A Employer-Mentorship Program for BIPOC Talent: How InVision Communications and California College of the Arts Made It Happen!!

- Diana Chavez (California College of the Arts), Jill Tanner (InVision Communications) The timely and much needed social actions of BIPOC populations and their allies, has moved employers, industries and recruiters to examine and reflect on their diversity goals and recruitment models in systematic and collaborative ways.

As a way to make positive change, California College of the Arts and InVision Communications came together and created a BIPOC mentoring program supporting talent entering art, design, and humanities fields. Join us to learn how the program developed, its framework, and considerations for developing an employer-mentoring program.

This year has propelled most institutions into a virtual workplace we were not set up for.

But 2020 has also provided a unique opportunity for universities to experiment in the ways they connect and support their employers. The Employer Relations team at the Foster School of Business will share how they increased employer engagement by 88% through a virtual strategy that created access and opportunity to support their employers virtually.

Finding your Social Justice Voice in the Workplace: Career Programing Strategies to Empower the Next Generation of First Gen Professionals - Rosa Trujillo (California State University, Long Beach) How can we begin teaching students the ways they can bring their authentic selves to work? How can we support the development of their social justice voice and advocacy style? Engage with fellow practitioners as we dive into different techniques and best practices that create brave spaces for students in virtual career programing initiatives to assist in understanding and integrating their intersecting identities in the world of work.

Supporting Career Development for Veterans - Crystal Cory, Matt Root (University of Utah) Veterans offer a unique skillset to the workplace. However, the programs they attend as they leave the military are not always effective in supporting career development. This is where Veteran Centers and Career Development step in. But how should they help? We will cover the history of veterans in higher education, results of a career needs assessment given to student veterans, challenges of working with student veterans, and allow for some time to brainstorm.

2020 and Beyond: Leveraging Cultural Intelligence (CQ) for Career and Workforce Development in a Multicultural World - Justin Gomez, Eileen McGarry (University of Nevada, Las Vegas) Working across differences is an essential skill for success in today’s global workforce. Together, we will explore what Cultural Intelligence (CQ) is, how to measure it, and why career professionals and employers should care.
