TAG TEAM DEBATE

If thousands of people believe that the earth is flat or that lizard people are in charge of everything, it’s more than likely that you could make up a conspiracy theory from scratch and gain a few supporters. This is what you need:

1. A problem

An everyday problem that people can relate to, but not immediately explain.

2. A villain

It can be a powerful individual, an organization, or another country. It’s also quite effective to point a finger to a group of people, or a combination of two groups of people.

3. A motive

The villain behind the conspiracy needs to gain something. It could be either money, world domination or to cover up an even bigger conspiracy.

4. Connect the dots

Everything in the world is connected if you just connect it. There are no coincidences. Figure out what evidence there could be against your conspiracy and find flaws in the evidence, or simply reject the evidence as untrue and part of the cover up.

A mindmap to organize your ideas is a good way to start. Try out your conspiracy theory on someone by explaining it before you start writing your text. Add details and point out obvious evidence to make your conspiracy theory sound believable. Be confident, you know the truth – you just have to make others see it too!
