THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

MAY 15, 2022

Welcome!

JOIN US ON SUNDAY

Dear Friends, This afternoon at 4 p.m. in the church, we will host the first Combined Choirs Concert at Saint Michael in a generation! This gala choral concert will feature the combined choirs of Saint Michael and include the final premiere of a 75th anniversary commission: Psalm 100 (Jubilate Deo) written for the combined Cherubs, Choristers, and Choir by internationally renowned composer Cecilia McDowall. As we continue through the Easter Season, we are nearing the Feast of Pentecost on Sunday, June 5, when we will conclude our 75th Anniversary year with a big celebration! Our Birthday Party Reception will be held in the Garden Cloister from 9:45 - 11 a.m. We will recognize the incredible volunteers who have made this year so special while we share birthday cake. Pentecost Sunday will be a great opportunity to meet the Rev. Robin Hinkle, our new Associate for Mission & Outreach. Looking ahead, please mark your calendars for Pub Theology, our annual summer series that engages hot topics in a faithful way. In addition to the excellent speakers, the Pub Theology Music Series spotlights singer/songwriters from the DFW music scene, featuring a fifteen-minute concert at the beginning of each evening. This is an exciting way for our Saint Michael community to reach beyond our walls and invite neighbors in.

This grand fantasia, also known as the “Piece d’Orgue”, is one of Bach’s more unusual organ compositions. It opens with an extended flourish, marked “très vitemenet”, and then suddenly enters a slower section in rich six-part harmony, full of dramatic seventh-and-ninth chords. The third section also comes as a surprise, and travels through a series of arpeggiated dissonances, to reach a virtuousic, exuberant conclusion.

The Lesson

Acts 11:1-18

Now the apostles and the believers who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also accepted the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him, saying, “Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?” Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by step, saying, “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners; and it came close to me. As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and birds of the air. I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter; kill and eat.’ But I replied, ‘By no means, Lord; for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ But a second time the voice answered from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, you must not call profane.’ This happened three times; then everything was pulled up again to heaven. At that very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we were. The Spirit told me to go with them and not to make a distinction between them and us.

These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house. He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, ‘Send to Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; he will give you a message by which you and your entire household will be saved.’ And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?” When they heard this, they were silenced. And they praised God, saying, “Then God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life.” Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 148:1-2, 11-14

Thomas Attwood

Chanted by the Choir

Hallelujah! Praise the LORD from the heavens; * praise him in the heights. Praise him, all you angels of his; * praise him, all his host. Kings of the earth and all peoples, * princes and all rulers of the world; Young men and maidens, * old and young together. Let them praise the Name of the LORD, * for his Name only is exalted, his splendor is over earth and heaven. He has raised up strength for his people and praise for all his loyal servants, * the children of Israel, a people who are near him. Hallelujah!

The Gospel Gospeler People

John 13:31-35 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

At the last supper, when Judas had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

The Sermon

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

The Nicene Creed

Seated Standing, spoken by All

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Holy Communion Offertory Anthem “Easter,” from Five Mystical Songs

Ralph Vaughan Williams

Rise heart; thy Lord is risen. Sing his praise Without delays, Who takes thee by the hand, that thou likewise With him mayst rise: That, as his death calcined thee to dust, His life may make thee gold, and much more, just. Awake, my lute, and struggle for thy part With all thy art. The crosse taught all wood to resound his name, Who bore the same. His stretched sinews taught all strings, what key Is best to celebrate this most high day.

This expansive hymn of praise opens Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs, on the theme of life with the Risen Christ. George Herbert finds music in the death and resurrection of Christ, who was stretched out in death on the wood of the cross, becomes God’s instrument, playing a melody of love to the world. The heart responds to the melody by joining with it, as instrumentalists join together in consort to make music. But since none can sing this Easter hymn perfectly, a further strand needs to be woven: that of the Spirit who makes up ‘our defects with his sweet art’.

Consort both heart and lute, and twist a song Pleasant and long: Or, since all musick is but three parts vied And multiplied, O let thy blessed Spirit bear a part, And make up our defects with his sweet art. - George Herbert

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer B Celebrant People Celebrant People Celebrant People

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus and Benedictus: Hymn S 128

William Mathias

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

Standing; during the season of Easter, we return to the practice of the early church and stand during the Prayer of Consecration and the Post-Communion Prayer. You may also stand to receive Communion at the altar rail.

St. Botolph

Worshippers are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

Widor composed this energetic piece at the young age of 28, just two years after he had been appointed organist of the cavernous Parisian church of St. Sulpice, home of the largest organ in France. He would remain there for 63 years, writing six more symphonies, delighting in creating kaleidoscopic sounds in a grand church with a revolutionary instrument.

While our church formation activities may take on a different flavor over the summer, we continue to gather regularly to encourage one another and “provoke one another to love and good deeds.” Join Ken this Sunday to learn about diverse ways to grow in faith.
