Dear Friends,

JOIN US IN WORSHIP

Today is Pentecost! We have a wonderful celebration of “the birthday of the Church” with big music and festive liturgies at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 5:30 p.m. (due to weather concerns, the evening service will be in the church, not outside). It will be a Spirit-filled day! Summer is coming fast, and our continued reopening will include in-person Sunday Formation classes and the return of the inperson Joy Service with the Joy Band in June! Beginning June 6 and continuing through the summer, the Joy Service will return to the Saint Michael Chapel at 9 a.m., followed by children, youth, and adult classes at 10 a.m. It will be wonderful to be back together physically! You’ve likely noticed multiple construction efforts happening at once, including the recent removal of some trees along Colgate Ave that died during the winter storm in February. Our

Twentieth-century French composer Duruflé was among the first to grow up singing Gregorian chant as part of a renewed interest in chant. As a boy chorister at the Rouen Cathedral, he would have sung Veni Creator Spiritus every Pentecost for Vespers. Standing His major organ work on this hymn was finished in 1930. A triptyque, it concludes with a hommage to the Baroque and Classic periods in French organ music, much like the de Grigny heard earlier, in a set of versets. Exactly like in the past, Duruflé’s first verset features a full statement of the chant using the organ’s shimmering principal chorus. More intimate variations follow. The concluding variation begins with a rhythmically active toccata figuration based on the chant melody whose energy swells to a glorious climax.

The Collect of the Day: Contemporary Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lesson

Acts 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed,

saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: `In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ “

O Lord, how manifold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great. There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it. All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season. You give it to them; they gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. You hide your face, and they are terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust. You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; * may the Lord rejoice in all his works. He looks at the earth and it trembles; *

Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to his disciples, ”When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Thanksgiving over the Water Celebrant People Celebrant People

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.

The Peace Please be seated for the Announcements Composed in 1768 when young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was only 12 years old, this setting of “Veni Sancte Spiritus” is marked by a light-hearted joyfulness that fits the celebratory nature of Pentecost. The music alternates between full choir sections of polyphonic imitation and duets of soloists.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. In fulfillment of his true promise, the Holy Spirit came down on this day from heaven, lighting upon the disciples, to teach them and to lead them into all truth; uniting peoples of many tongues in the confession of one faith, and giving to your Church the power to serve you as a royal priesthood, and to preach the Gospel to all nations. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sung by All

Hymn S 128 Sanctus and Benedictus

William Mathias

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

13

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Celebrant and People

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

The Celebrant continues

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

Communion Motet Litany to the Holy Spirit

Peter Hurford

In the hour of my distress, When temptations me oppress, And when I my sins confess, Sweet Spirit, comfort me. When I lie within my bed, Sick in heart and sick in head, And with doubts discomfited, Sweet Spirit, comfort me. When the house doth sigh and weep, And the world is drowned with sleep, Yet mine eyes the watch do keep, Sweet Spirit, comfort me.

Virtual motet, sung by the Saint Michael Treble Choristers Robert Herrick (1591-1674) was an English poet and priest in rural Devonshire. Peter Hurford set these words in 1958, the year he was appointed organist and Choirmaster at St. Alban’s Cathedral. His plaintive but gentle writing well suits Herrick’s deeply personal prayer to the Holy Spirit, and the text is communicated especially clearly in this unison version, for young voices alone.

Concluding Hymn Hymn 511 “Holy Spirit, ever living”

Abbot’s Leigh

One of two settings of the Lutheran hymn “Komm, heiliger Geist” (“Come, Holy Ghost”) found in Bach’s “Leipzig Chorales,” today’s prelude is an extroverted piece ideal for celebrating the Feast of Pentecost. Perpetual motion writing for the hands (perhaps depicting the Holy Spirit as rushing wind, as in today’s reading from Acts 2) presents never-ceasing excitement over a slow and fervent pedal line, which features the hymn melody.

Postlude Hymn permission used by Rite Song, a one-time use reprint license for congregational use unless otherwise noted. The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979. The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.
