I wish, as most of you do, that we could just jump ahead and begin worshipping together as we once did, but with new cases of COVID-19 on the rise in Dallas, our bishop remains committed to caution out of care and concern for the most vulnerable among us. Even with those restrictions in place, I am very grateful to report that Sunday afternoon communion distribution was truly beautiful!

Continuing today and every Sunday afternoon into the near future, you are welcome to come to the Saint Michael Chapel to receive the consecrated bread. The chapel is set beautifully to create a holy experience. I can tell you that many who attended last week cried as they stood in that space and shared communion with our clergy. If you’d like to join us this Sunday, please click here for information and to let us know you’re coming.

Bach’s setting of the Lutheran hymn “Herr Jesu Christ, dich zu uns wend” (“Lord Jesus Christ, turn towards us”) comes from a collection commonly referred to as the “Leipzig Chorales.” This collection contains late-in-life revisions of works Bach wrote at a much younger age. Their precision of counterpoint represents the thoughtful eye of a master looking back on his earlier Standing work with the wisdom and skill granted by a lifetime of experience. The text of this hymn speaks of God’s people praising him, culminating in a trinitarian final verse: “Honor to the Father and to the son and to the Holy Spirit, on one throne, to the holy Trinity praise and glory in eternity.”

Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in E-flat are programmed for this Trinity Sunday because of the trinitarian symbolism embedded within them.

These pieces were originally published as the bookends for Bach’s “Clavierübung, Part III.” Between the prelude and fugue are found chorale preludes, duets, and service music of an astounding variety of compositional styles. The bookending prelude and fugue, much like the volume itself, combine divergent idioms to create a seamless whole. The prelude is written in three contrasting styles, symbolizing the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Listen for the change in character as the composer moves between these ideas and how the he brings together disparate styles in a unity that reflects the nature of the triune God.

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

The Fugue in E-flat is actually a triple fugue, featuring three contrasting themes in succession that are then combined at the conclusion of the piece. The first, symbolizing God the Father, features a slow rhythm and declamatory theme. God the Son’s theme, the second one, is full of fast step-wise runs that bring a new sense of excitement into the piece. The third and final theme, for God the Holy Spirit, is lively and features a leaping theme. Bach’s combination of three disparate themes into one unified piece creates a powerful musical depiction of the Trinity - three persons in one.
