Speaking of great work, I hope you will join me for the Fall Parish Meeting that will be held digitally on Sunday, October 25 at 10:15 a.m. This meeting will include an update on the life of our church, as well as the election of our lay leaders for both the Vestry and Diocesan Convention. Since this year’s meeting will be digital, it’s important to note the special election process.

During his time working for the court in Weimar, Bach transcribed a number of orchestral concertos for the organ. This one, in C Major, is transcribed from a Vivaldi concerto for violin known as “Grosso mogul,” which was originally in D Major. To illustrate the original piece’s alternation between soloists and full orchestra, Bach indicates that the organist should switch keyboards for a difference in sound.

When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered around Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make gods for us, who shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” Aaron said to them, “Take off the gold rings that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” So all the people took off the gold rings from their ears, and brought them to Aaron. He took the gold from them, formed it in a mold, and cast an image of a calf; and they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a festival to the Lord.” They rose early the next day, and offered burnt offerings and brought sacrifices of well-being; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel.

The Lord said to Moses, “Go down at once! Your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have acted perversely; they have been quick to turn aside from the way that I commanded them; they have cast for themselves an image of a calf, and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’” The Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, how stiff-necked they are. Now let me alone, so that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them; and of you I will make a great nation.”

But Moses implored the Lord his God, and said, “O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth’?

Turn from your fierce wrath; change your mind and do not bring disaster on your people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, how you swore to them by your own self, saying to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’” And the Lord changed his mind about the disaster that he planned to bring on his people.

Herbert Howells, born in Lydney, Gloucestershire in 1892, composed ‘O pray for the peace of Jerusalem,’ when he and his wife were snowed in at a cottage in Gloucester in January 1941. To pass the time, Howells wrote four anthems at the rate of one a day. The first of these is ‘O pray for the peace of Jerusalem’, nd it has an unusually simple musical texture for Howells, Standing

with long expressive unison phrases. Apart from a brief central climax at the words ‘and plenteousness within thy palaces’, it is a mostly restrained piece. The pure interval of the open 5th provides the open space between two notes marking the words ‘O pray.” There is a further rising interval on the text ‘Jerusalem,’ elevating the place itself with this compositional technique.

Mendelssohn’s organ sonatas represent a significant re-birth for the organ in both continental Europe and England. Mendelssohn was a child prodigy and one of the great virtuosos of his day. He made his name on the continent as a pianist and conductor and in England as an organist, and frequently drew packed houses to his concerts on tour.

When he published his sonatas simultaneously with four publishing houses in England, Germany, Italy, and France, these works instantly joined the standard canon of organ repertoire.

Stewardship 2021

Care for the Future The Care Ministry of Saint Michael and All Angels is very excited to be a part of the stewardship efforts this year because it affords us the opportunity to do two things.

First, I want to thank you for your kindness and willingness to look after friends and family, the many ways you volunteer, and most importantly, supporting us with your generous giving. Thank you! Secondly, this opportunity offers us the occasion to note why our group of ministries is so vibrant within our parish and let you know of our plans for the future.

I believe the Care Ministry is uniquely positioned to offer the peace and comfort that the people of Saint Michael desire. This characteristic comes about because, as broad as our ministries range, we are essentially a gathering of small groups. Each of our ministries endeavors to foster a close group of people who offer comfort and service to one another during trying times.

Through our efforts of love and care, our ministries become places of refreshment and refuge; a bulwark in times of trouble – a new expression of life and community.

In order to support and further this new expression of community at Saint Michael, our Care Ministries are organized into four specific spheres.

Pastoral Care ministers to those experiencing acute care and grief. These offerings include Priest on Call, Grief Classes, Parish Nurse, and Praying Our Goodbyes.

Education continues to offer short duration classes like A Christian Response to Dementia and Parish Nurse Topics. Organizing for Heaven is a popular offering where we talk about how Christians can thoughtfully plan for when God calls them home.

Pastoral Support focuses on long term care groups that minister to specific needs over the course of many years. To name a few, these small groups include Cancer Support, Caregiver Support, Card Ministry, Knitters, and Prayer Team.

Welcome Ministries is a dedicated gathering of ministers who interface and have the specific charge of acquainting our newest members with the myriad offerings of our parish. Good Shepherds and the Welcome Ministry specialize in continuing to connect and invite our parish friends and families deeper into the life of Saint Michael.

Because of your generosity, we will soon be creating a new Membership Coordinator position, within the Welcome Ministry.

The Membership Coordinator will connect and engage our parishioners with our newest members and guide them into those ministry and small group experiences that extend the feeling of love and support that we receive at Saint Michael.

The Care Ministry of Saint Michael is actively alive and we are proud to serve our church home. Right now, in this time, I believe the Spirit has given this Body of Christ a true opportunity to grow deeper: deeper into Christ, deeper into community, deeper into our spiritual lives, and deeper into our parish through ministries and small groups. All Christians are called to a life-giving bond with the Almighty; we invite you to experience this bond through the power of our community at Saint Michael.

IN-PERSON WORSHIP (LIMITED SEATS AVAILABLE) For the past six months, in-person gatherings have been strictly limited by government and church authorities due to COVID-19. Now, with the permission of from our governing bodies, Saint Michael is pleased to begin offering limited in-person opportunities for worship and communion. If you and your household are well, we look forward to your presence among us. Our present in-person worship offerings include our three Sunday services and Distribution of Communion. There are limited spots for each engagement, and safety measures have been enacted to ensure the protection of all who join us.

Offered every Sunday at our 9 a.m. Traditional, 11 a.m. Contemporary, and 8 p.m. Compline services. Reserve tickets for your household at saintmichael.org/worshiptickets.

Each Sunday Saint Michael will admit a limited number of attendees to each of our three worship services. We invite all who desire to attend worship in-person to join us with members of your household. As there is limited assigned seating for each service, you must register your household online beforehand to attend. Tickets to each service are available on a first-come, first-served basis one week at a time beginning on Monday mornings. No one will be admitted without a ticket.

Livestreams and video recordings of our weekly services remain available so that all can watch and participate. Visit saintmichael.org/live to tune in.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: Tickets will be available one week at a time beginning on Mondays for the upcoming Sunday.

For your safety, the following protocols must be followed while on-site: •

Masks are required inside all church buildings.

•

Please maintain at least 6-feet distance from those outside your household

•

No shaking hands or physical contact with those outside your household

•

No physical passing of the peace

•

No congregational singing

•

No passing of the offering plate (there are other ways to give!)

•

No distribution of Communion during the livestream services; consecrated bread is available in the Saint Michael Chapel on Sunday at 12:30 P.M. – 1:30 P.M.

•

No coffee or congregating in the church after the service has concluded. The people will exit out the main sanctuary door immediately after the service.
