WELCOME FROM THE PRODUCERS CURTAIN UP…IT’S SHOWTIME!
Over two years in the making, with countless starts and stops due to a global pandemic, we are pleased to (finally) welcome you to “Michael, A Musical!”, Saint Michael and All Angel’s 75th Anniversary celebration, presented to you this evening by the Women of Saint Michael. Our journey to tonight’s performance began in August of 2019 with a simple request to plan the 2021 Parish Party. And we said, “Sure! We can do that!” And then someone said, “Hey–the year 2020-2021 is also the 75th Anniversary year so shouldn’t the Parish Party be ‘bigger’?” And then someone else said, “Yes! And wouldn’t it be perfect to bring back the tradition of the Parish Show for the 75th?” Once that horse left the barn, there was no turning back. The three of us committed ourselves to bringing back a musical review to be written, produced, and performed by parishioners of our wonderful church home. We began with a small group of devoted and knowledgeable parishioners who, due to COVID, began meeting via Zoom in late spring of 2020. This group included the late Bill Johnson who, along with the late Doug Perry, produced many of the original Parish Shows of yesteryear. We knew we were on the right track as we looked for a way to celebrate the past, present, and future of SMAA. The three of us, along with major assists from Elizabeth Showalter and Jim Skochdopole, began writing the show later that year. Once the songs were selected, lyrics written, and a final script produced, we conducted auditions and cast the show in August of 2021. Since the fall of 2021, you may have heard singing emanating from the Parish Hall on Sunday afternoons. That would be the over 60 parish actors, singers, and dancers of all ages who signed on to this show before ever laying eyes on the script and have enthusiastically embraced it. And we are blessed with the creativity of many parishioners who’ve worked on set design, costumes, and props, and others who’ve provided sustenance for the cast during long rehearsals. We are so grateful you chose to share your God-given time, talents, and treasure with us this past year. It’s been a joyful experience. We greatly appreciate the hard work of the “Michael” directors and Chris Girata, our pastor who has been our biggest cheerleader (and star!) from the beginning. A HISTORY OF THE SAINT MICHAEL SHOW A History of the Saint Michael Show by Honorary Executive Producer, Bill Johnson
Saint Michael Parish Shows began when our church was about 60 years younger and much, much smaller! The original purpose of the show was to encourage parishioners to attend the annual Parish Meetings held each January. The first shows featured songs written and performed by various groups within the church (Ushers, Choir, Altar Guild, Clergy, etc.). Whichever group spent the time to write a song actually performed it, and the theme of the songs in the show was usually a “year in review.” The shows were always light-hearted and fun for the cast, crew, and audience. They were also very popular! Attendance grew so much that the annual meeting moved from the church to the auditorium of Highland Park High School. Doug Perry was a major contributor to the writing of these shows, and I directed and performed in them. With Doug’s passing, the shows gradually stopped being produced. Those of us here tonight who remember the original shows are especially proud and excited to see tonight’s performance of “Michael, A Musical”. Enjoy the show. WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST AND CREW LYDIA ADDY (Co-Writer, Co-Producer, Ringo Starr, Gift Box, Ensemble) Lydia wants to thank her brother Larry for providing her with her first acting roles in family skits from their childhood. :) Many thanks to fellow writers and producers, Jeff Rice, Nancy and Jim Skochdopole, and Elizabeth Showalter for taking this fantastic, nearly three-year Michael journey. To Chris Girata, Ashley, Jacque, and Beth, I’m beyond grateful for your counsel and faith in this show. DEE ANN ANIGIAN (Raphael, The Archangel of Healing) Dee Ann is thrilled to make her theatrical debut on the McFarlin Auditorium stage. The irony of playing the Archangel of Healing was not lost on Dee Ann’s family, given her “rub some dirt on it and go play” parenting style. Following the run of this show, Dee Ann can be seen as a buyer at The Exchange and will assume her exciting new starring role as Millie’s grandmother. MARY BALDWIN (Ensemble) Mary’s musical talent became apparent at age 9 when she was cast as a mongoose in Saint Michael’s production of Noye’s Fludde. Her skills developed in the youth choir, further in the high school productions of The Boyfriend, and Mame. Later she returned to the SMAA choir loft, and then sang as a member of the Honduras “Super Estrellas”. Thanks go to her supportive husband and Dr. Paul Thomas for not letting her talent interfere with her love of music. MISSY BARRAS (Gift Box, Ensemble) Missy (aka the Hat lady at Church) returns to the stage now that the live theater pandemic hiatus is over. A member of Resolute Theater Project, Missy performed in To Carol,With Love, playing such characters as Father Hannigan, French Maid, Sister 2 of Tappin’ Tanya’s Hallelujah Chorus and Nurse CommonIwannaleia. (Missy wears many hats inside and outside the theater.) Missy says, “Hats Off!” and thanks to Kelly Crawford, Elizabeth Selzer and Arnold Spencer. Through de-
cades of Sundays and daily life, your friendship and support are immeasurable blessings. You are the best of Saint Michael. TOM BLACK (Greeter Tom, George Harrison, Ensemble) Key roles and venues: the angel, 4th grade production of Johnny Appleseed; co-MC, 1980 Captain Shreve talent show; guitar and vocals: on his rocking horse in the carport; Shreveport’s acoustic quartet, The Little Country Band; 1st prize in 1980 UT Union All-Nighter Talent show; appearances at UT’s Cactus Café and SMAA’s Discovery Mass Band (CD, Discovery in the Chapel found on iTunes, all proceeds to SMAA). Currently playing mandolin in SMAA’s Contemporary Service band. Thanks to my family for having high tolerance. KEN BRANNON (Vice Rector, Greeter Ken, Ensemble) Ken is thrilled to participate in this celebration of Saint Michael’s past, present, and future. When he was called (in real life) to serve as Vice Rector at Saint Michael, this musical was definitely not in his job description. However, he couldn’t pass up an opportunity to connect with his theater roots and get to know new friends. Thanks, Chris, for calling me to Saint Michael. “Just you wait!” RACHEL BRANNON (Ensemble) Rachel is happy to be spreading the love around for Saint Michael’s 75th. Past credits include Pippi in Pippi Longstocking (2nd grade), Eliza in My Fair Lady (high school), and several roles in lesser-known college productions. With her husband, Ken Brannon, she wrote lyrics and co-directed original children’s musicals performed at the Church of the Holy Trinity in NYC (1990s). Thanks to Ken for being my #1 through all the seasons and years. TONY BRIGGLE (Voice of God, Joel Grey) Tony made his theatrical debut at Florence Nightingale Hospital and continues to perform weekly in his 49-year role as Acolyte Master at SMAA. Television, stage, producer, director credits include Route 66, To Tell the Truth, and Father Knows Best.
WHO’S WHO He was awarded best actor as the hunchback in Infanta, Neiman Marcus Presents, featuring show business favorites the Supremes, Johnny Carson, Liza Minelli and Joel Grey, whom Tony will be channeling tonight. Other performances include SMAA Christmas Pageant, and the Michael Curry documentary. His appearance on the McFarlin stage brings back memories as a thespian at SMU. Thanks and love to Marla, six daughters, their spouses and eleven grandchildren. GRAYSON BROOKS (Chorister, Ensemble) Grayson Brooks is a 7th grader at Lake Highlands Junior High. Past performances include The Magic Flute (The Dallas Opera), Falstaff (The Dallas Opera), Newsies (NTPA-Dallas), Frozen (NTPA-Dallas), The Lion King (NTPA-Dallas) and roles in a few short films, most recently for Community Partners of Dallas. In his spare time Grayson is always creating new and useful things and enjoys spending time with his family and friends. TAYLOR BROOKS (Chorister, Dancer, Ensemble) Taylor is a freshman in the Richardson High School Theatre Magnet. Some of her favorite past roles include Aslan in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, LeFou in Beauty and The Beast, and Tilly in She Kills Monsters. She also loved having the experience of playing the Pelepine in The Dallas Opera’s The Magic Flute. She would like to thank her directors and her family and friends for their support. ELIZABETH BUCHANAN (Ensemble) Having spent 16 years back-stage at McFarlin Auditorium (assisting with her daughter’s recitals), Elizabeth is thrilled to be making her debut on the stage. A dance minor and former dance instructor, choreographer and performer, Elizabeth now joins the ensemble and has profound respect and admiration for the vocal skills needed for a show. She is grateful to her family (Bob, Graham, and Blaire) for their assistance with her rehab over the past three years. EDNA CANNATA (Ensemble) Edna began her short stage career at camp, performing in the ensemble cast of Pinocchio and as the monkey king in The Jungle Book. She was a backstage hand for a performance of Oklahoma. Her joy of being part of a show
is why Edna is back performing! She is amazed by the singing and dancing talent of this cast. Her family cannot wait to see her on stage! PEGGY CARR (Uriel, The Archangel of Wisdom) In high school, Peggy volunteered to seat people and pass out programs at the Memphis equivalent of Dallas Theatre Center for several years. (She got to see shows for free!) In recent years, she has appeared as her alter ego, Lavelle (pronounced La-vayul) Bates, from Lizard Lick, NC, at several venues large and small (Senior Source luncheon, Women Attorneys, Junior League meetings and one of our very own Vestry meetings.) She’s retired!! BECKY CASEY (Set Design) A lifelong Broadway musical fanatic, as evidenced by her scores of Broadway playlists, Becky is thrilled and honored be a part of this premier Dallas theatrical event. Thanks to Jeff, Lydia and Nancy for their vision and hard work in making Michael a reality, their impressive leadership, and for putting their trust in someone with no previous experience in set design. “You’ve gotta go after the things you want while you’re still in your prime.” - Kate Monster, Avenue Q GARLAND COHLMIA (Ensemble) Trained in dance and cheerleading, Garland is thrilled to be a part of this talented cast. She enjoys cooking, interior design, Pilates, gardening, and “hanging out” with her 101-year-old mother. Garland has also been an instructor of jazz and ballet. SQUEAKY CONNOLLY (Stewardship Chair, Ensemble) Squeaky is beyond excited to be making her debut on the McFarlin Auditorium stage after a long hiatus from singing in choir. CARTER CONWAY (Stewardship Committee Member Carter, Ensemble) Carter developed her love of musical theater in first grade playing a wounded bird seeking a Christmas tree for shelter. She went on to play a horse in Mary Poppins, a tango dancer in Annie Get Your Gun, and most recently has been a member of the all-girl band “Super Estrellas” which has WOWED grade-school fans exclusively in Honduras. A big thank you to all cast and crew for such a fun experience! DEE DOCKERY (Ensemble) Dee will be channeling his inner Barry Manilow this evening as he vividly recalls his first live concert: 5th grade, October 23, 1976, starring Mr. Manilow on this very McFarlin stage. Dee’s credits include Curly in Oklahoma (McCulloch Middle School, 1978) and decades of unsung performances in showers across the globe. He is excited to share the stage with his talented Saint Michaelite friends–some of whom are choir buddies–and looks forward to the 100th anniversary show! LOWELL DUNCAN (Greeter Lowell) Lowell has long been known for his many roles at Saint Michael, stepping in to fill the void, carry the water, and close the doors. In this show he is typecast as the energetic, although somewhat bumbling, slightly off-the-mark, greeter – a role for which he is perfectly suited. He appreciates his adoring fans who, he is certain, will demonstrate their affection at his performance. JACQUE GAVIN (Director) Jacque received her BA and MFA in Theater from Trinity University. She recently concluded a 42-year run at St. Mark’s School of Texas, where she was Chairman of the Fine Arts Department and taught drama. She has appeared onstage locally, regionally and nationally. Jacque feels that by directing Michael! she is returning to her roots, as one of her first onstage roles was at age 4 when she appeared as an angel in the nativity play at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Shreveport, Louisiana.
BRAYDEN GIRATA (Greeter Brayden, Ensemble, Soloist) Brayden is a sophomore at the Episcopal School of Dallas. This is his first performance on the McFarlin stage, although he’s watched his sisters dance here more times than he can count. His musical theater experience includes roles as Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls and John Northbrook in Mary Poppins. He lives to sing and isn’t bad at it either, making second chair bass at All State. He loves being a member of the choir and the acolyte corps at Saint Michael. CHRIS GIRATA (Rector, Ensemble, Soloist) Chris grew up on the stage and is excited to make his debut at SMU tonight. Past credits include The Music Man, Carousel, Li’l Abner, and Guys and Dolls. It’s a privilege to celebrate Saint Michael’s anniversary with this amazing cast and crew. A special word of thanks to our Producers who had the vision and energy to make this happen. Cheers to another 75 years! CATE GOGLIA (Ensemble, Soloist) Cate is a senior at the Hockaday School. She is so excited to be a part of Michael the Musical! XIMENA GUZMAN PADUA (Ensemble, Chorister) Ximena is excited to participate for the first time in a musical. She is honored to be part of the Choristers at SMAA, which inspired her to take a big step for the performance. And finally, to her parents who supported her in this adventure. STEVE HAAL (Ensemble) Steve is the Director of Communications at Saint Michael, but also an opera guy! He made his solo debut with Dallas Opera in 2000, and has sung in nearly 70 productions, including the world premiere of Heggie’s Moby Dick with TDO and others. His happy place is high in the mountains (he’s climbed part of Mt. Everest and summitted Kilimanjaro), or on the beach with great friends and family–and food! Cooking is a serious hobby!

WHO’S WHO AMANDA HARRIS (Liza Minelli, Dancer, Ensemble) Amanda has enjoyed every minute spent reliving her high school theater glory days in preparation for her McFarlin debut in Michael: The Musical! Though a lawyer by trade, in her heart (and in the shower), she’s the best show-tune singer around. Amanda would like to thank her husband and children for keeping the eye-rolling to a minimum. A very special thanks to Troop 5359 for their flexibility this year! SYLVIA HOOD (Ensemble) Sylvia is excited to be a part of Michael! She started her musical theater career while in high school in Indianapolis. Her favorites were playing Adelaide in Guys and Dolls and Ado Annie in Oklahoma. Little did she know she would spend so much time actually in Oklahoma. She has had a long hiatus from the stage and thanks her wonderful family, Michael, Maggie and Lexie, for their encouragement. DAVID HOPSON (Gabriel, the Guardian Archangel) After many years of announcing athletic events at the Episcopal School of Dallas, David gets a chance to toot his own horn on the McFarlin stage. An actor his entire life, David waits patiently for a call from Hollywood. He is grateful to Lydia, Jeff and Nancy for seeing his angelic side, and says thanks to Jacque for helping him curb his enthusiasm. Neque cantare, neque saltare. MARY LOUISE HOPSON (Stewardship Committee Member Mary Louise, Ensemble) Mary Louise began performing at age five in TV commercials for her family’s jewelry business. She then went on to sing in the children’s choir in Menotti’s The Bishop of Brindisi in fourth grade. In high school she pivoted to the theater, playing David’s mother in David and Lisa. (She also was voted “Wittiest Senior Girl,” which she considers her greatest achievement.) She’d like to congratulate her husband, David, who, finally, is getting his wings. SANDRA HUGHES (Ensemble, Soloist) Sandra loves to perform and is so glad to be back on stage. She danced the role of the black swan in Swan Lake, 195?, and she still brags about the acting award for Ka-
trin in I Remember Mama and as the vocalist with the Pecos High School Stage Band, 196?. She has sung at weddings, funerals and follies, and has been known to break into song in public for no reason (to the embarrassment of family and friends.) Thanks go to everyone involved with this production. These individuals are not only talented, hard-working, and encouraging, but also fun, fun, fun! KATHY JENEVEIN (Ensemble) After school, camp and church choirs in the 1970s, Kathy feels hip again to sing in a musical! She is honored to celebrate 75 years of Saint Michael, 35 of which she experienced! “It’s great to sing praises of this Parish and I’m lucky to participate! Besides, I want to show my three daughters that I can do crazy fun volunteer jobs, too!” Thank you to Patrick, for going on this fun ride with me! PATRICK JENEVEIN (Ensemble) Patrick was “released” from Paul Thomas’s men and boys’ choir to the acolyte corps before most of our clergy was born. Patrick, in testament to Michael’s cast and producers’ forgiveness, takes his second, final bow to singing for Saint Michael in Michael. CHRISTINE HAND JONES (Ensemble, Soloist) Christine Hand Jones has been performing on stage ever since her 2nd grade teacher tricked her into an audition by shoving a script into her hands and asking her to read it. Favorite roles include Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof (in which SMAA’s own Justin Brooks played her father), and Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins. She can be seen performing original music in local coffeehouses by night or performing literary analysis for sleepy college students by day. She thanks her husband, Adam, for sticking with her through her many solo performances of The Little Mermaid. JAY LIPSCOMB (Stewardship Committee Member Jay, Ensemble) Although a significant departure from his participation with the SMAA choir, Jay is thrilled to be joining his wife Suzanne as a part of Michael, The Musical! His last appearance on stage was a portrayal of Father Ratelle in the last parish show approximately 40 years ago. He is especially appreciative of the writers and producers who have so generously

SUZANNE LIPSCOMB (Ensemble) Suzanne is delighted to be part of this incredible group of talented parishioners! She last enjoyed being on stage in middle and high school productions (overseas in small schools) but feels most at home with her “choir family” at SMAA. She would like to thank the musical producers and coaches for all their work and encouragement, and her husband, Jay, for joining her in this adventure! DARREL RICE (Stewardship Committee Member Darrel, Ensemble) Darrel was in the cast of the Hockaday Parents’ Association Benefit Hooray for Hockaday along with his daughter Chandler, singing and dancing in “Daddy of a Daisy,” and was a member of the cast for the St. Marks School Parents’ Association Benefit High Times, Low Times, Construction Times. He has enjoyed being in the cast with his wife, Jeff, and his son-in-law, Jeff Winslow. JEFF RICE (Co-Writer, Co-Producer, Ensemble) Co-Producing Michael! has been a joy for Jeff. Most recently, she performed the role of “The Wall” from A Midsummer Night’s Dream under the direction of Jacque Gavin for the Dallas Shakespeare Club. Prior credits include writer of the Great Cornerstone Caper for the Hockaday School Parents’ Association Benefit in the 1980’s. She has enjoyed being in the cast with her husband, Darrel, and son-in-law, Jeff Winslow. NICKIE RILEY (Dancer, Ensemble) Classically trained in the Royal Academy of Dance style, Nickie is pleased to be returning to the McFarlin Auditorium stage after a hiatus of 23 years. She currently teaches university writing and literature and is thrilled to be celebrating Saint Michael’s 75th anniversary. Thank you to Nathan, Mom, Jonathan, and April for all of your encouragement and support! MARY ELIZABETH SCHLEIER (Set Design) Mary Elizabeth is happy to work on another SMAA production. Credits include VBS decorations and set design, mural painting in Honduras, and designing the SMAA Christmas ornament. On the
design team for the original Nativity Pageant, she is thrilled they still use her grass, stone wall, and sheep, all cardboard. She thanks husband, Grady, for patience with a messy house when she’s on a project. He wants to know her excuse for other times. KURT SCHOLL (Parishioner Kurt, Greeter Kurt, Ensemble) Kurt is excitedly stepping back on the stage after a 25-year hiatus from performing. His background includes The Sound of Music (Captain Von Trapp), The Princess and The Pea (Dauntless), and The Music Man (men’s quartet, train cast, ensemble). He sang with the Denver Opera Company during his 20’s, in productions of Mozart’s The Magic Flute (Ensemble, men’s quartet), Handel’s Messiah (Chorus Tenor), and ultimately a leading part in the opera Susannah (Sam Polk). He then hung it up and has concentrated on riveting solo performances in his car until being “voluntold” by his wife that he will be joining the Michael cast, which he happily accepted! SALLY SCHUPP (Ensemble) Sally began her performance career at age 9 cast as a Wombat in SMAA’s first Noye’s Fludde production. She appeared in numerous church musicals and the infamous early parish shows. Hearing the Siren’s Song decades later, she grabbed a mission trip gig. Sally LOVES performing with the WILDLY popular parishioner band, “The Super Estrellas”; exclusively booked in Tela, Honduras since 2007. Thrilled to land a part in Michael!, she thanks Dreamboat and her SMAA family. ELIZABETH SHOWALTER (Co-Writer) “No musical training? No problem!” That’s how Mark Anschutz got Elizabeth and her trusty sidekick, Hilda the Hippo, started on their unlikely tenure with various music and Children’s Ministries at SMAA. No longer living in Dallas, Elizabeth is grateful to Lydia, Nancy and Jeff for reconnecting her with SMAA through this fun musical nod to the church she loves. HILARY BLAINE SWALM (Stewardship Committee Member Hilary, Ensemble, Soloist) Hilary earned her BFA in musical theatre at The Boston Conservatory and went on to New York City to pursue a career in performing. Credits include the national tour of Guys and Dolls (u/s General Cartwright) and the national and Singapore tours of My Fair Lady (u/s Mrs. Hopkins). Regional work includes The Who’s Tommy (Gypsy/Acid Queen), Bonnie and Clyde (Bonnie), Crazy For You (Irene Roth), Chicago (Roxie Hart), Singin’ In The Rain (Lina Lamont), 9 to 5,The Musical (Ensemble), Jerry Springer:The Opera (Ensemble), and Kiss Me Kate (Ensemble). Hilary is the proud owner of Hilary Blaine Studios where she teaches vocal technique and acting through song. Hilary is also a choreographer, with some of her favorite works including Footloose, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, Bye Bye Birdie, The Addams Family, and Newsies! A tremendous amount of love and gratitude for her strong, supportive crew including her amazing husband, Matt, parents Craig and Shannon, grandmother Beverly “Meme” Baker, and feisty toddler boy Sterling. Love you all so much! LAURA TALBOT (John Lennon, Shopper Laura, Ensemble) Laura cut her teeth in theater when she was the prompter in her 5th grade play. Most memorable roles are Mom to baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and Gabriel in various SMAA pageants, and support player in several ESD auction party musicals. Laura is still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up. PAUL TALBOT (Parishioner Paul, Greeter Paul,
Paul McCartney, Ensemble) Paul is one of a long line of attorneys who enjoy being on stage. He has appeared in several ESD Auction Party shows, community theater and academic theater (i.e., high school musicals and plays) over the years. At SMAA, he sings in the choir and engages in occasional improvisational liturgy as a chalice bearer and acolyte. ELLEN TEMPLIN (Ensemble) Ellen loves musical theater and is excited about being part of this fun production. She has been singing in church choirs since she was 18, and with the SMAA choir for the last 18 or so years. She would like to thank Howard (husband), Barbara (daughter) and Krypto (granddog) for their support and encouragement. STEWART THOMAS (Head Greeter Stewart, Elvis, Ensemble) Having given up his dream of a Broadway career (due to COVID), Stewart returns to the Saint Michael Parish Show stage as an overblown ham with a loud voice. In real life, Stewart has performed various long-running roles as husband, father, church volunteer, and attorney, all to rather tepid reviews. Stewart dedicates this performance to his father, Robert Hyer Thomas, who wisely encouraged him not to choose a career as a stage actor. MARY VAIL-GRUBE (Ensemble) Mary is excited to be a part of this wonderful production and thrilled to be working with this talented cast. This is her first performance since high school. Although, as the mom of a talented singer and performer who was cast in many shows throughout high school, she has lots of experience with the process from the other side of the stage! Thank you to our dedicated production team and everyone who worked so hard to make this such a success. KATHLEEN WALLACE (Stage Manager) Kathleen is no stranger to working behind the scenes having managed several previous productions and is most excited to lead a backstage crew once again. HUDSON WEICHSEL (Saint Michael) “I believe there are angels among us, sent down to us from somewhere up above.” –Helen Keller; Hudson is honored to be a part of this amazing production. He performed stand-up comedy in New York but finds life in Dallas even more humorous. A lifelong Saint Michaelite, Hudson’s confirmation class was taught by the voice of God himself, Tony Briggle. Thanks to Lydia, Nancy and Jeff for believing in me and to Jacque, Dee Ann, Peggy and David for all the laughs. ASHLEY WESTGATE (Music Director, Parishioner Ashley, Mom Ashley, Belle, Ensemble, Soloist) Ashley is excited to be returning to the stage after spending the last 20 years cast down into the pit - literally! She loved working in various musical theatre pits as a music director, conductor, percussionist, and drumset player. Most SMAA families know her as “Miss Ashley” from Joy: A Children’s Service, but she can also be found lurking behind the keyboard in the contemporary service. Thanks to Paul, Jason, and Justin for joining her onstage! JASON WESTGATE (Older Son Jason) Jason loves coding and has been with SMAA his whole life. He was baptized here, and his parents were married here. He participates in the Choristers program, loves helping, and misses Father Harmuth! Jason has been in the nativity pageants in every role possible at this point - from baby Jesus to an angel. Thank you to Ms. Regan for leading the pageants. JUSTIN WESTGATE (Younger Son Justin) Justin is six years old, and he really likes Pokemon, especially Charizard. He loves creating art, playing piano, writing books, and reading. He has been in the SMAA nativity pageants for three years, and he will be happy to discuss anything involving trains, giraffes and the color orange! PAUL WESTGATE (Dad Paul) Generally known for being Ashley’s personal roadie, Paul is usually content to blend into the scenery, but not this time! Favorite costumes include hay as Scarecrow (Wizard of Oz), football shoulder pads and 6” platform shoes
as Duke Solinus of Ephesus (Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors), Converse All-Stars and jeans as Big Deal (West Side Story), but definitely not the Egyptian collar and skirt as Pharaoh (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat). KAY WHELAN (Ensemble) Kay launched her musical performance career at age 4 when she sang an “Oh You Beautiful Doll” solo before a stunned crowd of 200. A few years later her stage career included multiple tap-dancing productions. She continued leading stage performances in various plays in school. Kay now annually enjoys ELECTRIFYING performances with the “Supra Estrellas” before a strong fan base in Tela, Honduras. She is over the moon being in the cast of Michael! CAROLINE WILEY (Wiley Daughter) At age 11, Caroline makes her debut with the Wiley sextuplet in singing “It’s Where I Belong, Amen!” She is a “whited” Chorister at SMAA that also plays the cello at Withers Elementary School. Caroline is an all-around athlete who enjoys soccer, softball, basketball, dance and cheer. Not only is Caroline musically, athletically and academically talented like her older brother, her special gift is her BIG and genuine heart that cares for and loves on all animals and likes to help any child that needs a little extra TLC. CHRIS WILEY (Parishioner Chris, Greeter Chris, Wiley Father, Ensemble) Born and raised in Dallas and a cradle member of SMAA, Chris is excited to help resume the fun and unifying tradition of Parish Shows. He is one of a few in the cast that can claim veteran status. Back in his days at HPHS, he participated in many musicals and plays along with some operas owing to his tutelage under Dr. Paul Thomas and Frank Sargent. After chasing his fighter pilot dreams in the Air Force, he and wife, Robyn, returned home to Dallas and SMAA full time. His whole family sings in the church choirs. He is the third generation of leadership for Wiley Brothers Management Corporation, working with his father and uncle to care for industrial properties throughout Dallas County. He hopes the success of tonight’s production is contagious and opens another long run of annual shows.
WHO’S WHO JIM WILEY (Wiley Grandfather) For 50 years, Saint Michael has been a major part of Jim’s life. All those years, Jim has sung in the choir while serving the Parish as Junior Warden, Treasurer and Diocesan Delegate. Jim’s enthusiastic participation in the SMAA parish shows began in the 70s and continued as long as the annual shows existed. One memorable year included an operatic duet with Dr. Paul Lindsley Thomas. In the show he remembers being mercilessly upstaged by Dr Thomas. To all that have worked so hard to bring back this SMAA tradition, a hearty thank you. KAREN WILEY (Wiley Grandmother) Karen has been an active parishioner at SMAA and in the choir for 50 years. She loved being in the cast for Parish Shows in the 80’s and 90’s, singing and kicking up her heels! Karen was wardrobe mistress for Music Drama productions with Dr. Paul Thomas, including Noye’s Fludde. She has also served as Senior Warden, Children and Adult Formation teacher and for Meals on Wheels. Many thanks to all who have revived this great tradition! LUKE WILEY (Wiley Son) Luke, age 14, is making his Michael! debut singing “It’s Where I Belong, Amen!” with the Wiley sextuplet. He is a blue-ribbon Chorister at SMAA who also sings in Jesuit’s Men’s Chorus, plays the bass drum, bassoon, and alto sax in the band, swims on the Jesuit swim team, and makes straight As in his honors track. In addition to Luke being musically, athletically, and academically talented, his handsome smile and charm will surely win you over.
ROBYN WILEY (Wiley Mother, Dancer, Ensemble) A lover of all genres of dance, Robyn joined SMAA in 2008 after both hubby, Chris, and she completed their active-duty Air Force careers as officers. Robyn, Chris and children Luke and Caroline sing in the SMAA choir. Robyn is proud to make her debut appearance in Michael as an alto and dancer. When Robyn is not dancing, singing or parenting, she works as a family nurse practitioner in a pediatric clinic and enjoys catching a group fitness class at the YMCA or walking her dog, Riley. JEFF WINSLOW (Parishioner Jeff, Greeter Jeff, Ensemble) Jeff is excited to be on the stage again after having to remove a considerable amount of rust from his theatrical abilities. His credits include Chino in West Side Story, though he is thankful few will remember any of his past performances. Jeff is honored to be a part of such a talented cast and crew! Thank you to Chandler, Taylor, and Reese for not making too much fun of daddy’s AirPod rehearsals at home. BETH WORTLEY (Choreographer) Beth recently retired from the Hockaday School after 32 years of leading the dance department and serving as Chair of Performing Arts. She taught Middle and Upper School dance classes and choreographed over 60 musicals and dance concerts. She has choreographed equally as many musicals and youth choir fundraiser shows at her church, First United Methodist, Dallas. She reports that working with “church people” is wonderful! She says, “Working side by side with Jacque Gavin and all the amazingly talented Saint Michael’s creative team has been a wonderful retirement gift.”
