Welcome to Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. August begins this week and we’ll be wrapping up vacations, getting ready for school and football, and Saint Michael’s fall activities will get started. Mark you calendars, Sunday, August 20: the fall worship schedule begins with Back-to-School Blessings at every service, and we’ll officially welcome our seven new worship and program leaders at a reception in the Garden Cloister. In the meantime, stay cool and thank you for worshiping with us. New Welcome Center Opens Next Sunday. Beginning next week there will be a Welcome Center to greet newcomers, visitors, and guests. If you bring friends or recognize a visitor, bring them to the new Welcome Center in the Parlor so that we can officially greet them, give them a gift and information about the church, and answer any questions they may have. Saint Michael 101 – An Introduction

Our Church for Newcomers. Newcomers interested in joining our church should attend the Saint Michael 101 dinner on Sunday, September 24. It is the perfect opportunity to explore membership, meet clergy and Vestry members, and learn about our many ministries, opportunities for involvement, and exciting future. If you have friends or neighbors who should be members of Saint Michael, get September 24 from 6:00 – 8:00 on their calendar. Childcare will be available. to

Prayer Ministry to Meet with Canon to the Ordinary. The Rev. Canon Michael Gilton will meet with the Prayer Ministry team at its Thursday, August 17 meeting. He will discuss “Prayer Changes You.” The meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Coke Activities Room. Dinner is available for $10. Make reservations at saintmichael.org/prayerteam. Serve at Austin Street Shelter August 1 & 2. Each month Saint Michael cooks and serves dinner to the homeless at the Austin Street Shelter. Volunteers are needed on Tuesday, August 1 to meet at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall kitchen to cook the meal, and on Wednesday, August 2 to serve it at the Shelter, 2929 Hickory Street, at 5:30. Saint Michael to Start SMU Campus Ministry – Rich Towers to Lead Saint Michael and All Angels will reestablish a campus ministry at SMU this fall led by The Rev. Rich Towers, Rector Chris Girata announced. Fr. Towers will join Saint Michael’s clergy staff on a part-time basis as Associate for Student Ministries. “This important new ministry will enable us to bring an Episcopal Church presence to SMU which has been dormant for several years, and infuse new vitality into Saint Michael’s ministry to young adults,” the Rector said. Towers will continue in his role as the Lower School Chaplain at the Episcopal School of Dallas and as a Priest Associate for Worship at Saint Michael.

Disciples Confirmation Class Registration Underway – Deadline August 15. Registration for the 6th grade Disciples Confirmation Class will close on August 15. The class will meet on Sunday mornings during the academic year, culminating with Confirmation in May of next year. The group’s first retreat will be August 26 and 27 at Camp All Saints with another next spring. In addition the Disciples will have the opportunity to work with a mentor and will participate in a community service project. Register online at saintmichael.org/disciples.

Priest on Call If you have an urgent need to contact a priest after hours call 214-232-7512. Communications Card Use the card to register as a guest, make prayer requests, RSVPs, and provide information on yourself. Need Prayer Prayer Teams can pray with you after Sunday morning services. Ushers can direct you to private prayer locations. Prayer Candles A $1 donation is appreciated for lit candles in the Bishop Moore and Saint Michael Chapels.

Sunday School Registration Opens for Children and Youth. Registration for fall’s Children and Youth Sunday Schools has started. There are ageappropriate classes for children from age 3 through the 5th grade. Our middle school students will do a DVD Bible study, Echo the Story, and high schoolers will engage in Teen Text, a Lectionary-based program that makes the Bible a vital, dynamic resource for teens. Last Chance to Contribute to North Dallas Shared Ministries Month. Tomorrow is the last day of July, but there’s still time to fill a grocery bag and return it to the South Lanai for North Dallas Shared Ministries. A list of preferred food items is available on bags at several locations throughout the church. Financial contributions are just as valuable. Make checks payable to North Dallas Shared Ministries and bring to the South Lanai receptionist. Pre-marriage Counseling Offered in August. The Sacrament of Marriage is one of life’s most important commitments. Saint Michael offers counseling to those preparing for marriage. There will be four sessions in August: on Sundays 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel Conference Room. Contact the Assistant for Liturgy and Worship, Dianne Boyd, at dboyd@saintmichael.org to schedule a wedding at Saint Michael. Nominations Open for Church Leadership Positions. Nominations are being accepted through Friday, August 18 for positions on the Church Vestry and Diocesan Convention delegation. The election will be held at a called Parish Meeting on Sunday, October 29. Five new Vestry members will be elected as will three delegates and alternates to serve at the fall convention. They will begin their terms in January. Nomination forms are available online at saintmichael.org or at the South Lanai Reception desk. August Faith and Grief to Feature Greg Dodd. Greg Dodd, a certified senior advisor with Seniors Helping Seniors, will be the speaker at the August 10 Faith and Grief Luncheon. It is an opportunity for those who have lost loved ones to have a meal and conversation together. The luncheon begins at 12:00 Noon in the Coke Activities Room. Make reservations with Katherine Bowen at kbowen@saintmichael.org. Author Colin Cahoon To Close Out Faith and Literature Series. Colin Cahoon, author of The Man with the Black Box, will close out this summer’s Faith and Literature class on Sunday, August 13. He is a writer of historically based fiction and a practicing Dallas patent attorney. Additionally he serves as the Chancellor of Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. His book is a terrifying examination of the corruptibility of mankind, a riveting twist on the classic battle of good versus evil. Faith and Literature meets Sundays at 10:00 in Saint Michael Chapel. Centering Prayer Group. Join us on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. in the Drake Room, to engage in Centering Prayer. Learn how to rest in God, the practice will transform you.
