Each individual band of frames has several rectangular frames which were prefabricated. The frames were then assembled on site using a combination of suspension cables and fixed joinery (to the adjacent wall).

Each frame was designed as per the requirement of the exhibits at that particular location.

The structure modulates itself based on availability of the voids in the corridor.

This model gives an essence of how the fabric of jodhpur has evolved due to extrusions .Parameters like shading ,viewing , accessibility ,bridging, activity ,relation to the main road etc have been taken into consideration while constructing this model.At a micro level many of the extrusions have lead to the formation of voids which are inhabitable and form spaces for social interaction.In case of residential/commercial forms the extent of extrusion of the chajja acts as the distinguishing factor.The buildings tend to gain height for climatic stability.Hence the above ďŹ gures show the different stages of development.

An estuary is where a river meets the ocean. It is a body of water where salt water from the ocean and fresh water from the river mix together. Estuaries are the homes to the thousands of animal and plant species. They are all over the world and at the end of almost every river. There are few rivers in the world that do not end up in the sea.

Phase 2: Systems

The project involved taking everyday objects, in this case plastic bangles, and using the modules together to form a cohesive system. The plastic bangles had the property of being flexible in pair, but rigid individually. This property was taken further to form the final project.

Phase 1: Experimentation

Students at work fabricating the modules for the system

The unit consisted of an ‘X’ form composed of two modules rigid in character attached to each around the middle by elastic rubber bands. This gives a unique system which is flexible in one axis while simultaneously being rigid in the other.

Initial experimentations with the module, applying the property of aggregation, gave rise to many different systems, each with their own properties of rigidity, flexibility, form, and connections.

The final system that was selected to be taken further in phase 2

The final system consisted of layers of the units tied together with rubber bands. To emphasize the properties of the system the layers towards the edges were compressed while those in the middle displayed the rigidity and strength of the system.

The intervention envisages the creation of a longer, subtler striation between the two conditions of the sand bar and the water. The installation will not interact directly with the user but create an enclosure which the user could interact with. This indirect interaction between the user and the installation serves the purpose of the installation primarily corresponding to the waves and breaking them and then interacting with the other forces-human conditions, site conditions and variations.

Canopy BSSA Installation Amphitheater, Kala Ghoda The material [corrugated boxboard] provided initial cues in deciding the installations specifications. It is a direct choice of the context of the city[mumbai] - ‘value addition’ and ‘regenerative usage’. It is modular, structurally self-sufficient and works on geometric principles of the diagonal and the rhombus. A modularsystem aids in creating a base which can be modified in accordance with the site conditions - tree-covers, spans and spatial gestures. Generically implied, each pod is like an inhabitant within a larger entity and aims to fit in with its surroundings to create the entity in its entirety - distorted, free-determined, coherent and dependent. A modular system with defined constraints of the site[kala ghoda amphitheter] and the city tries to capture the various forces that define the site and the city. Metaphorically, each packaging box module represents a Mumbaikar; their distortion similar to an individuals state of mind; and each Mumbaikar connected by a string of circumstances. The canopy overall depicts the city of Mumbai, denser at the places it can thrive and sparser at others.

The barcelona study tour was a walk through the city exploring physical and cultural aspects.

Barcelona being a planned city, can be studied at a macro level with its street grids and lively culture.

At a more micro level, one can see different styles of architecture like that of Gaudi and Mies Van Der Rohe.

BSSA 2010 EXHIBITION STUDY TRIP : BARCELONA

YEAR 2011 Barcelona Exhibition

The exhibition held at BSSA was an overview of the Barcelona study tour. Few of the places that were visited include the Waterfront, The La Rambla street, Gaudi structures that were exhibited through picture montages, collages, videos and models.

Placa Reial : square in the Barri Gòtic of Barcelona and constitutes a well-known touristic attraction, especially at night.

Caixa Forum : is a museum showcasing exhibitions of ancient, modern and contemporary art.

MACBA : is a museum of contemporary art consisting of workshops, publications and conference spaces.

Placa Espanya : prominent square, a major transportation hub Barcelona Pavillion : designed by Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, an example of modern architecture made of materials such as marble and travertine.

JUHU STUDIES As part of the urban design studio, the suburban area of Juhu was selected. Detailed demographic and programmatic studies of the area were carried out along with studying the existing infrastructure of the area. The studies were aimed at identifying emergent urban conditions in the area and understanding their impact on social, economic, infra-structural and ecological development of the area.

URBAN INTERFACE - NALA SITE: The nala forms a connected system and act as a natural interface between the rest of the city. The purpose of the study is to re-vitalize the edges of the nala and generate activities along it appropriate to the surrounding context.

THE INTERVENTION

SITE STRATEGY

The drop off points staggered to avoid congestion. The road is completely vehicular and has a 2 lane provision on either side.

The surfaces penetrate and peel off, acting as feeders into the programs.

The surfaces are such that there is a distinction between the ďŹ&#x201A;ow of people in transit and those that are engaging with the programs.

The surfaces are integrated within the site and the water of the nala become pockets of spaces along and in between the surfaces. The existing nursary is enhanced and is extended out into the site intervening between the existing slums and the road.
