Know Mask Policy on Campus

The Lion’s Roar is the offi cial newspaper of the students of Southeastern Louisiana University. It has been in continuous publication since 1937.

Submissions and letters to the editor are welcomed, but the editor of The Lion’s Roar reserves the right to edit all submissions for grammar, libel and available space, or refuse publication without notifi cation. Submissions must include the author’s full name and either phone number, e-mail or other contact information (not to be published). Faculty and staff members should include their title and department. Students should include their classifi cation and major. By submitting an article for publication, the author understands that the submission will be edited.

Organizational News space is provided at no charge as a courtesy for university recognized Greek and Student Organizations. The space of such articles is limited to 150 words. Submissions of this Organizational News must adhere to the same polices as other submissions or letters to the editor but must also include the name of the organization.

All views expressed in The Lion’s Roar are those of the author or, if unsigned, those of the staff of The Lion’s Roar. These views should not be interpreted as the views of the administration, faculty or students of Southeastern Louisiana University.

A single issue of The Lion’s Roar is free. Additional copies may be purchased for 50 cents in the North Campus Main Building, room 156. Annual mail subscriptions are $35 within the continental U.S.

The Lion’s Roar, in its print form, and associated online or digital versions, are designated public forums. Student editors have the authority to make content decisions without censorship or prior approval. The Lion’s Roar also defends the rights of student journalists relative to freedom of speech and press as stated in Amendment I of the Constitution of the United States of America.

The Lion’s Roar is published through the Offi ce of Student Publications, part of the Division for Student Affairs. It is published weekly during regular semesters and monthly during the summer semester.

University outlines restrictions for Fall 2020

As a part of an ongoing effort to ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff, the university has announced new restrictions and guidelines as a result of COVID-19 cases in Louisiana.

Upon returning to campus, all faculty and students will be required to wear face masks/coverings and maintain a six-foot distance from others.

The Student Safe Campus Guide outlines that face coverings should be worn at all times when inside any building on campus. It also lists the modifi cations made to campus buildings, including social distancing stickers, sneeze guards and seating limitations.

In addition, buildings and classrooms have been modifi ed to better accommodate social distancing guidelines. New signs reminding students and faculty to wear masks and directing foot traffi c will be placed inside buildings. Each building on campus will also have limited entry and exit points.

The Safe Campus Guide encourages students to bring their own face masks or coverings to campus with them. Masks will be available in each building in the event a student or faculty member does not have or has forgotten one.

The university’s newly released policy on face mask/coverings found on their website stated that students, faculty and staff who refuse to comply with the oncampus mask mandate will face disciplinary action.

According to the policy, “Students found to be in violation of this policy will be afforded due process as prescribed in the University Code of Student Conduct. Failure to comply by vendors, contractors, visitors or patrons may result in loss of campus access and potential termination of the contractual or other relationship with the university.”

The policy also lists scenarios in which students are exempt from wearing a face covering: outdoor activities or events in which 10 or fewer people are present, occupancy of a student’s private vehicle, occupancy of on-campus living spaces or when eating in designated dining areas.

Students with medical conditions that prevent them from wearing a face covering are also exempt from the mandate. Such students must bring documentation to the Offi ce of Student Accessibility Services to verify this exemption.

Jeremy Brignac, director of the Offi ce of Environmental Health and Safety, asked in the guide that students be fl exible and understanding.

“Our knowledge and understanding of the COVID-19 virus continues to evolve, and our policies and plans will be updated as appropriate as more information becomes available,” said Brignac. “This may not be a straight path forward.
