Miranda Matise 06 Fighting through the silence An enchanting melody, the laughter of a child, sweet nothings from a loved one: all beautiful sounds often taken for granted, but for sophomore communication sciences and disorders major Miranda Matise, who started losing her hearing at the age of 13, these precious sounds are fleeting.

“I have bilateral conductive hearing loss meaning sound has trouble getting through the ear canal,” explained Matise. “I have perforated ear drums. I also had a non-cancerous tumor made of skin cells in both ears.”

However, Matise did not allow her condition to deter her. Instead, she became passionate about advocating for people with hearing disabilities as part of a high school project.

“I raised money for a nonprofit called Hands & Voices, and I made a 10-minute video that consists of factual information and different interviews of deaf people,” said Matise. “I mostly just tried to spread awareness and break the stigma of the community. Deaf people don’t need or want to be ‘cured,’ and they are proud to be deaf. I didn’t think I would become so interested and passionate about advocating for the deaf community.”

Upon entering college, she saw the need to start a sign language club. Called Sounds of Silence, the club, which just began last year, has 15 active members and almost 40 applicants looking to join.

“With the club, we hope to spread awareness about the deaf community and to break the common stigmas,” explained Matise.

In the club, members learn ASL together using online resources.

“Sometimes we play games and a deaf instructor from The Mission Church will come sometimes as well and teach us about deaf

culture and more signs,” stated Matise. “We try to treat it as a group of friends just learning ASL together. No one is fluent in ASL, and you don’t need to know any ASL in order to join.”

Hearing loss has impacted Matise’s life in more than one way as it has contributed to a growing anxiety about her disability.

“I think communicating with people has been a struggle because not everyone understands or is willing to understand - like turning to me when they’re talking or speaking clearly and a little louder when I didn’t hear the first time,” explained Matise.

Vice President of Sounds of Silence Deanna Guarino, a sophomore elementary education major, has been friends with Matise since middle school and has watched her struggle with hearing loss as well as gain a passion for ASL. “Miranda is one of the most driven and passionate people I know,” stated Guarino.

“This organization has helped her grow as a person and accomplish one of her dreams - spreading awareness for deaf culture and ASL.” Matise says that deaf people are her motivation in life.

“In our society, we think that deaf or hard of hearing people can’t do anything, but they can,” said Matise. “They just can’t hear. I’m motivated to spread more awareness on people with hearing loss and how people should just understand that sometimes we need accommodations and that it shouldn’t be a bad thing.”

Guarino has made connections in the club and advocates for it to all students.

“It is an excellent way to get involved on campus and, because members are only

required to attend one meeting per month, it is easy to work into a busy schedule,” commented Guarino.

Matise’s future goals are to spread awareness and become an audiologist to break the stigmas between the hearing and deaf communities.

“If I become an audiologist, I want to talk to my patients about all of their options: sign language, hearing aids, cochlear implants and the deaf community,” said Matise.

The club Sounds of Silence has an interest meeting on Sept. 25 at 5:30 p.m. in room 2218 for students wanting to join.

“They can come see what we are about and learn a few signs to see if they’re interested in that,” stated Matise. “They can also follow our Instagram @slusoundsofsilence for more information or questions. They can also send us an email as well at slusoundsofsilence@gmail.com.”

What you need to know about safe sex and

Contraceptives

As a new school year begins, the university advises students to stay educated and aware of its resources regarding sexual health and safety.

The college experience allows students to be exposed to different activities for the first time without parental supervision, which can include sexual activity.

However, not all students are familiar with sexual health and safety. Contraception is a familiar method that students can take part in to protect themselves against sexually transmitted diseases and infections as well as pregnancies.

“Birth Control is a contraceptive that has various uses, but the most common being to prevent pregnancy and diseases,” said Andrea Peevy, nurse practitioner and University Health Center director.

“There are many different types of birth control that women prefer and use, such as oral medication, shots, patches, intrauterine devices, vaginal rings, and implants.”

The health center offers prescriptions on all of these options of birth control with a valid health insurance card.

“Finding the right birth control is not difficult at all,” explains Peevy, “A female student can make an appointment with the health center to discuss what she may feel more comfortable with, and if eventually it’s not the best fit, then we can just try more options from there.”

Many women experience both pros and cons with the various types of birth control.

In addition to preventing pregnancy, birth control can also help regulate menstrual cycles, alleviate acne and balance hormones.

Tara Rossignol, a sophomore athletic training major, shared her experience with birth control.

“I’m on Cryselle, which is a higher hormonal dosage,” shared Rossignol. “My skin has gotten a lot clearer since taking birth control, my periods are lighter and my cramps are basically gone. The only negative is remembering to take the pill every night at the same time.”

Condoms are another form of contraception and can be used for both men and women. The university’s health center offers free condoms.

“Condoms help prevent the use of sexually transmitted diseases such as Chlamydia, AIDS, HIV, Herpes, Gonorrhea, and many more,” stated Peevy. “Not only do we offer condoms, but each semester, the health center holds free STD screening and treatment, typically after Homecoming or Mardi Gras.”

With a new school year beginning and many freshman getting adjusted to a new social atmosphere, it is important to stay educated on sexual health and safety.

Staying Safe : 10 What to do when struggling with alcohol

Helping a friend after a night of drinking can be more than giving them a drive home.

With several bars, pubs and liquor stores within a couple miles of campus, students who have unhealthy drinking habits may use the chance for a fun night out against themselves.

The Alcohol Rehab Guide stated in a July 2019 article that about half of college students who have consumed alcohol have also participated in binge drinking, which is when an individual raises their blood alcohol content (BAC) to 0.08 or above within two hours.

Courtney Williams, a mental health counselor at the University Counseling Center (UCC), shared what precautions one should take to help a peer after a night out.

“It can range from calling the police to simply talking to your friend once they are sober, but this will depend on many different factors including safety and severity,” said Williams. “If strong concerns exist, going to the hospital or calling an ambulance may be necessary.”

Andrea Peevy, nurse practitioner and University Health Center director, cautions students who have had a couple of drinks to find a designated driver because sometimes, young adults do not realize that their BAC is over the legal limit to drive.

Peevy explained that long-term consequences can surface from receiving a DWI. “If you get a DWI, there are a lot of professions that can affect whether or not you’re able to actually work in that profession - one DWI, one,” discussed Peevy.

Drinking the night before school or work could start bad habits within those fields through careless work.

“You may not be able to complete assignments,” shared Peevy. “You may be too hungover to go to work. If you do go to work, your performance at your

job is probably going to be substandard.”

Drinking heavily also makes students more prone to sexual assault. The National Institute on Drug Abuse stated in the publication “Sexual Assault and Alcohol: What the Research Evidence Tells Us” that sexual assaults are more likely to occur in environments where alcohol is available.

“Potential perpetrators seek out such settings as a way of finding vulnerable individuals,” the publication stated. “Alcohol should be seen as a risk factor for— not a cause of—unwanted sexual advances and other forms of sexual assault.”

Dr. Alexandra Solomon, a clinical psychologist, wrote an article for Psychology Today explaining that understanding the “red zone,” a period between August and Thanksgiving break where the majority of sexual assaults occur across college campuses, is crucial for any college student.

Solomon shared that sexual assaults are not usually committed by strangers.

“According to the Department of Justice, for 90% of victims of sexual assault, the perpetrator is a friend or an acquaintance,” stated Solomon. “Further, research indicates that alcohol typically has been consumed by the perpetrator, the victim, the perpetrator, or both.”

Peevy shared that freshmen who feel obligated to drink are less likely to reach out for assistance.

“Freshmen come in and think that everyone drinks, but in reality, they don’t,” explained Peevy. “And so, if you think that everyone drinks and that’s what they’re supposed to do, you’re not going to get help because that’s what everyone does.”

Williams shared that young people may feel that alcohol is perceived as a smaller threat than other substances, and because of this, students may not ask for guidance when needed.

“Many people can feel shame from struggling with a substance that others their age seem to be able to manage, even though many young people can struggle behind closed doors,” discussed Williams.

For those looking to assist their friends after a drinking episode, Williams advised for people to listen to the ones they care about with compassion and concern.

If people become weary that listening to their friend may not be enough, Williams encouraged students to ask for assistance.

“It can be helpful to ask for outside help when you yourself are unsure of how to proceed,” shared Williams. “It is always appropriate to seek help if you are worried about your friend’s behavior or if they are in unsafe situations.”

Refuge Recovery is a program hosted by the UCC starting this fall semester that uses Buddhist principles to aid students struggling with substance abuse.

“Wisdom and compassion enable those struggling with any form of addiction to become more mindful of their mental processes while also developing a deep understanding of the suffering that addiction has created and compassion for their own path,” said Williams.

Meetings will take place on Mondays from 12:301:30 p.m. in Student Union Annex room 2209.

LION UP Collegiate Recovery Program aims to help students with their recovery, whether it be alcohol or drug abuse, through the assistance of the UCC and the Department of Student Affairs.

“A CRP is a program which offers specialized and strategic support to help students achieve growth and success in their recovery and academic journey,” explained WIlliams. “Collegiate recovery programs offer this type of support, much like student-athletes and veterans receive on college campuses.”

Students looking for a good time in college could incorporate alcohol, but should not misuse the substance.

“Drinking alcohol, especially to excess, is not a part of everyone’s college experience, and it doesn’t have to be,” shared Peevy.

Festivities at the 24th annual

Hot August Night Food, music and vendors connect families and friends during the annual “Hot August Night” event in Hammond.

The Downtown Development District is hosting the 24th “Hot August Night” on Friday, Aug. 23 and will showcase numerous businesses and artists from the area.

“We’ll have farmer’s market vendors, Southeastern artists and vendors from outside the district,” said Olivia Graziano, assistant director and farmers market director of the DDD. “We’ll have a great variety of food and shopping experiences, so you’ll see everything from jewelry sales to a cool caravan that sells cheesecakes and coffees.”

“Hot August Night” features

unique attractions that offers the community the chance to get familiar with the district.

“Our main event for the evening will be the Wine & Beer Walk,” shared Graziano. “It’s really the most recognizable portion of the event because we’ve been doing it for so long, and that’s how our patrons who are coming into the community get around downtown and visit with our merchants.

We’re having around 25 wine stops and upwards of 20 beer stops. We’re also going to have Zydeco musician Wayne Toups playing on our mainstage who’s won Grammy awards.”

Born and raised in Hammond, Laura Anthon shared her personal ties with “Hot August Night.”

“Growing up, I remember the

Columbia did little events for kids, and I remember going there with my brothers,” expressed Anthon. “My mother also played music, and I remember setting up a tent with her. We would do drum circles and invite people off the street to play with us and have fun. It’s truly a night where friends can get together, explore downtown, and see what it has to offer. We can take pride in our city and what we have.”

Manager of Pita Pit Michelle Craig decided to participate this year to help promote their business.

“This year, we’re partnering up with the Hammond blood bank,” said Craig. “We’re also participating in the Beer Walk. It was a big hit last year as the whole

town was involved, and there were tons of people all night.”

“Lionpawlooza” starts at 5:45 p.m. on the mainstage, which will serve as a university-themed pep rally.

“The spirit squads are out there alongside the band and sports teams,” stated Graziano. “The coaches do a little bit of speaking and get everyone excited for the upcoming fall season.

I’ve personally always loved ‘Lionpawlooza’ because I went from participating in it to now running it. It’s fun to see how the faces change, but the event stays true to form.”

From 5 p.m. -9:30 p.m., patrons can listen to local musicians on the Listening Local stage located from North Cypress street to Morrison Park.

“We’ve moved the Listening Local Stage from the core of downtown to one of our side streets to give it that more intimate feel,” expressed Graziano. “Those are our musicians that play completely original music, and

you won’t find any covers. We didn’t really have a whole lot of space allotted for them last year, so you’ll be able to congregate around the stage and have fun.”

Each year, “Hot August Night” requires a great deal of planning and execution in order to have a successful event.

“Chelsea and I have done this for a few years together now trying to iron out the kinks,”

said Graziano. “We have a great events committee that has helped us figure out what functions the best. Brochures come out about a week before and can be picked up at any one of our merchants.

We’ll also post parking closures about two weeks ahead to make sure people can plan ahead for the evening.”

Creating a productive

Study Space

Many can relate to the story of planning to have a study session in the living room but end up watching Netflix. Some students go to a nearby coffee shop to study but end up focusing on how the workers are making a special latte. Others might also start dozing off as they choose their comfortable bed to study. All these occurrences are quite common because as students, we fail to create an effective study space.

Knowing how to make the best use of our study time is important to achieve the academic goals each of us set for the upcoming semester.

Here are some tips to help concentrate on the subject matter at hand: 1. Figure out what time works best to study: All of us have our own day-today patterns, and we know what time can be most productive. Choose the time accordingly.

“We each have our own circadian rhythm,” said Marie Bernard, advisor at the Center for Student Excellence. “It is best to study when our bodies are alert.”

2. Get comfortable, but not too comfortable: Find a place that is comfortable to study. However, don’t choose places like your bed or couch where

you will most likely fall asleep.

3. Keep yourself away from distractions: The main rule is to keep your phone away. One single notification beep can bring a bend in your path of a longer study session. “It needs to be a place free of distraction,” said Bernard.

“If you find going to your dorm room ends up with you watching Netflix or falling asleep, then that is not the place for you to study.”

4. Have plenty of light: It is even better to study in natural light as it lifts the mood and increases focus.

5. Listen to music: Music without song lyrics can help you concentrate without distracting you with words.

6. Take an exercise break.

7. Be determined. Visualize the bigger picture.

“Make time for your physical and emotional well-being,” said Bernard. “Plan your study sessions, and stick to your plan. Be sure to visit your professors, and utilize all of the resources that are offered through campus. Make college an experience. Attend social, athletic and cultural events whenever your schedule allows.”

Caffeine alternatives To those who really want to stick to their New Year’s resolution to avoid caffeine, here are some alternatives:

The semester begins. You wake up early in the morning, start attending lectures, work while being a full-time student and your planner starts filling up with deadlines and test dates. You are fatigued, your eyes are fluttering, and you instinctively reach for a cup of coffee or any other caffeinated beverages.

Even though caffeine gets energy in the system, it has more negative impacts in the body including some obvious ones like insomnia, increased heartbeat and upset stomach. According to Dr. Millie Naquin, professor of health studies, the recommended caffeine intake for an adult is only up to 400 mg or an equivalent of four cups of brewed coffee. It is not always necessary to rely on caffeine to kick start your day.

These options can help you manage your work and studies and to mark off items from your to-do list. You can still manage to do all the tasks in your planner and work towards your goal for the semester through these alternatives.

1. Tea

Tea contains less caffeine than coffee but can still energize you for the 8 a.m. class you cannot afford to miss. According to “Health benefits linked to drinking tea” published by the Harvard Medical School, tea has antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties. Tea also contains substances linked to lower risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. It can be a better alternative to the early morning cup of coffee infused with cream and sugar.

3. Lemon Water

Lemon water has more benefits than just aiding to the weight loss and skin rejuvenation.

It is a great source of Vitamin C, contains antioxidants, acts as a laxative for better digestion and freshens breath. However, it is important to drink it in moderation as drinking a lot of lemon water might erode the enamel on the teeth due to its acidic nature.

2. Coconut Water

This clear liquid found inside coconuts can serve as a fat-free beverage and is known to have many health benefits. An article, “Cracking the coconut craze,” published by Harvard Medical School, states that coconut water can be healthier than drinks with added sugar and colorings such as sports drinks.

Coconut contains potassium, re-hydrating electrolytes and serves well after a tiring exercise.

4. Exercise

Exercise acts as lubricator to the human machine. “I think it’s really important to get the brain going, get the circulation, get the oxygen for the brain so that you don’t have to use as much caffeine,” said Naquin.

Conquering College

Baylee Smith: balancing a 4.0, two jobs and campus involvement Young adulthood comes with many struggles often exasperated by the stress of college and supporting oneself.

However, senior political science major Baylee Smith has found a way to maintain a 4.0 GPA while also working two part-time jobs and being involved in organizations on campus.

Smith is employed at Wiseguys Daiquiris and Buddies Bar & Grill and also has her own spray tanning business. On top of all this, she is also a member of Phi Mu Fraternity, the director of traditions for the Student Government Association and has been a part of many other organizations on campus throughout her collegiate career.

With the amount of commitments that Smith agrees to outside of campus, her SGA position has many timeconsuming responsibilities as well.

“As director of traditions, I am involved with planning Homecoming week, SGA service Saturdays and ‘The Big Event,’” stated Smith. “These organizations take up the majority of my time off of work and school.”

According to Smith, her education is very important.

Smith has received scholarships for her grades to help her pay for school and has decided that she wants to pursue further educational opportunities after graduation.

With Smith’s determined mindset to stay successful in college, she says her number one secret to success while managing jobs and being involved on campus is time management.

“I assign quite a bit of my free time to studying and making sure that I have set aside enough time during my week before a new week starts,” explained Smith. “I usually take Sundays off to catch up on my studies and plan my week ahead.”

Sarah Wolfe, a sophomore marketing major, has formed a special relationship with Smith through Phi Mu - Smith

is Wolfe’s big sister in the fraternity.

Wolfe has learned the importance of time management from her big sister.

“She taught me that it’s important to spend time on the things that matter and that will prepare me for the future, which means prioritizing my daily activities and knowing what is the best thing to prioritize that day,” stated Wolfe.

Wolfe states that she has seen Smith accomplish so much, and Smith’s ability to prioritize is what has helped her the most.

“She is constantly staying on top of her responsibilities and does not procrastinate, even if that means staying up late hours of the night or putting more important things before less important things,” shared Wolfe. “She stays very organized through every activity, and by doing that, it allows her to make every second of the day count.”

Smith explained that because her schedule is so hectic, her duties differ depending on the day.

“I don’t really have a daily routine as much as I just mark out my time daily as I need to,” said Smith. “Some days I have different events and responsibilities, so I change my routine as needed to adhere to each specific day.”

Smith believes that students on campus should figure out where they want to be in life and work towards that goal.

“Everything that I do is to eventually better myself, so I think it would be beneficial if more people could focus on that,” said Smith.

Car eer Fair : 20 Networking made easy The university’s premier networking and recruiting event, Career Fair, is returning this semester for students and alumni to meet potential employers and grow their professional network.

“Career Fair provides students with a unique opportunity to meet professional representatives from over 150 companies across industries,” said Sandy Summers, technology recruiting manager for the College of Science and Technology. “Students should attend to identify employment opportunities, expand their network, learn industry information, and land an interview that might lead to an internship or full-time position.”

The 2019 Career Fair is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will take place in the Pennington Student Activity Center.

“Students can register in advance for Career Fair by logging into LionHire with their W Number and associated password or downloading the ‘Symplicity Jobs and Careers’ app, explained Summers. “This app will allow students to navigate Career Fair from their phones in advance and on event day.”

According to Summers, this event is important because it allows students the opportunity to ready themselves for the real world and remain careerfocused from their freshman year to their senior year.

“This will enhance their chances of meeting their career goals and securing their dream job,” shared Summers.

“Building a network and learning how to connect in a professional setting are two critical aspects of a student’s

career development journey.”

Career Services provides many amenities for students to benefit from such as resume reviews, interview tips and other advice on professionalism.

At Career Fair, attendees can also get a professional headshot for their LinkedIn profile.

“For Southeastern students and alumni, Career Fair is an excellent way to network with organizations of interest and learn about other companies that could be viable places of employment,” stated Summers.

Summers recommends students prepare by securing or purchasing a professional outfit, having a wellwritten resume, and coming with relevant and intelligent questions prepared. To aid students in their

preparation, Career Services will have a part-time job fair in the Student Union on Thursday, Aug. 29 as well as walk-in resume reviews from Sept.

3-17 - Monday through Thursday only - from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m., the JCPenney Suit-Up event on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 4-8 p.m. at Hammond Square Mall, and Networking for Introverts on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 4:30-6 p.m. at the Alumni Association Banquet Hall.

SGA funds lion statue Not only will the university see incoming students this fall, but a new statue will also make its appearance.

The Student Government Association was granted approval to put in a new lion statue on the university’s campus in the Fall 2019 semester.

According to Richard Davis, a senior middle school education major and 2018 SGA president, the statue is still being created and is scheduled to be installed this school year in Friendship Circle.

“The motivation to create a lion statue on campus has been the idea of many students over the past several years, especially in the Student Government Association,” shared Davis. “However, the idea

The former SGA President shared his thoughts on how the university and the Hammond community will react to the new statue.

“I believe the Southeastern family will be very pleased with how the lion statue turns out,” stated Davis. “It will be a beautiful new staple on campus that will lead to long-lasting memories and traditions.”

The road to achieving their goal began with a committee consisting of Davis, Leto, SGA advisors, Director of Alumni Michelle Biggs, Athletic Director Jay Artigues, Art and Design Director Dale Newkirk, and Director of Facility Planning Ken Howe and was called the Lion Statue Task Force.

“We were able to invest $50,000 for the entire project all from the Student Government Association’s Capital Outlay Fund at the beginning of 2018,” stated Davis.

A word from the editor...

Summer is coming to a close as the new academic year arrives. This has been the busiest summer of my life - filled with new clothes, new friends, new experiences and fresh perspectives all resulting in a new A.J. Now, as I prepare to slip back into my normal routine of classes, work, sorority and other club obligations, I can’t remember what that routine was. I wonder what were my priorities, why did I do this, how did I do that, and why did that scare me?

I have now made four of these magazines, and each one felt like the first time, like it brought a fresh start. That is

how I have always viewed the start of a new semester but that no longer feels accurate.

I feel like I have matured a lot this summer, and I am not yet sure how that will effect my approach to the newspaper.

As always, I strive to provide high-quality designs and intriguing stories for our readers.

However, instead of a magazine focused on beginnings and youth, I want to show growth.

College is a time to try new things and learn everything.

Of course, you can never know everything, though, so let’s slow down this semester.

So much is changing around us - on campus, in higher

education, in America and in the world. If not careful, it could pass you by without your realizing.

You do not need a fresh start. You need to live in the present and grow slow and steady, like an elegant pear tree. If you start to nurture yourself now, in three to five years you will have a beautiful gift to present the world. That is what college is meant for So, try not to stress. Go to more events on campus and in town. Visit your family. Don’t get caught up in one person or one goal. Change is inevitable, but change is good. Embrace it and nothing will be able to stop you.
