Opportunities in street dancing

I

nspiration can stem from a simple observation and grow into something much larger.

Alumnus Steven Ban started street dancing 12 years ago when he was 16. When he arrived at high school before classes began, he noticed other students practicing and that sparked his interest in the art.

“I started recording myself, critiquing myself – watching YouTube, and I started to develop my own style,” explained Ban. Ban’s dancing career continued after graduating from the university in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in business management.

He received flyers from people about auditions for the movie “Pitch Perfect 2.”

“I originally wasn’t going to go because I had work,” shared Ban. “A friend of mine was like, ‘Hey, tomorrow they’re still doing auditions the day after. If you want to go, let me know.’ And I was like, ‘Why not? I’m not doing anything tomorrow. Let’s do it.’”

Two weeks after the audition, he received a part as a dancer for the group Das Sound Machine in the film.

“That was my big break, and I still get residuals from that movie to this day,” said Ban. “That’s how I bought my car. That’s how I built up my savings account.”

A year after auditioning for “Pitch Perfect 2,” Ban went to Dallas, Texas with one of his friends to try out for Season 12 of “So You Think You Can Dance.”

He shared that at the Dallas auditions, around 200 dancers earned a ticket to Las Vegas, Nevada.

About 10 performers appeared on TV from the first audition though, and he was among that group.

“That was really the peak of my career started getting booked, other studios were calling wanting me to teach master classes,” explained Ban. “I was making special

guest appearances at Miss Southeastern, judging competitions in and out of state.”

In 2017, Ban participated in “Battlefest of New York.” He placed in the top four and was voted crowd favorite.

“I’ve always watched Battlefest as long as I’ve known about it all over YouTube,” stated Ban. “There were even documentaries about it on Netflix that I watched about it.”

Having researched the background of the competition beforehand, Ban enjoyed being a participant when the opportunity arose.

“The street dance competition style of dance, the adrenaline rush, the competition – it was great,” said Ban. In addition to his screen time, Ban has worked on the set of “The Magicians” on Syfy as well as Lil Wayne’s “Uproar” halftime show sponsored by Genesis.

Currently, Ban works at a computer company but

still incorporates street dancing into his schedule.

“During the weekdays when the studios are open, that’s when I teach during the school year,” explained Ban. “During the summer, I do summer intensives. I was judging talent competitions recently.”

Whenever Ban travels, he seeks out every chance to watch street performances.

“I go to California and New York a lot with a couple of buddies of mine - going to some of the actual events over there and watching the people that you look up to compete or even just show their presence,” said Ban. Ban is inspired to continue his craft the same way he was inspired to start: by watching the performances of others.

“Being around other dancers, whether they’re dancers from a studio or dancers from underground, that’s what really pushes me to still keep doing it,” shared Ban. “Watching people older than me still do what they do, still dance when they’re way older than me. That’s a huge inspiration.”

Breaud Makes Top Cracking into the top 10 in alltime hits for the university was how Brennan Breaud, a senior infielder, wrapped up his final season.

Breaud earned 55 hits across 60 games, earning 22 RBI’s in the process.

Breaud was not focused on the record books during the season but focused on performing his best on the field.

“It felt pretty good to do something like that,” explained Breaud. “I heard some people talking about it a couple weeks prior, but I was just focused on trying to get us wins and make the team progress. We were just trying to keep this thing rolling because we have been hot lately.”

According to Breaud, when he signed with the university, he never anticipated breaking into the top 10 in all-time hits.

“It was not even in my head when I first committed,” stated Breaud. “I didn’t know anything about it. I heard when I had 100 hits, but I did not keep count. It felt cool to get up there with some of the greats who played the game here. It’s an honor, and I’m just

blessed to keep playing games for Southeastern.”

Breaud stated that this accomplishment is among his top three moments as a Lion.

“I got a standing ovation,” shared Breaud. “My close ones that knew me congratulated me.

My family was very proud of me, and it felt good to do it. It felt real good, and I’m just trying to keep this thing going and trying to win a conference championship.”

Matt Riser, head baseball coach, explained that over time it became clear that Breaud would set records.

“When he first stepped on campus we told him that we didn’t play favorites,” stated Riser. “We had some upperclassmen when Brennan first arrived on campus, and he had to work his way to the top. He played all four years, so we thought he had a pretty good shot at getting into the top 10.

We play who we think can get us to the next level. He did a good job grinding and earning his spot amongst those guys. I am glad in everything he has done for the team.”

Riser talked about what the

10 ultimate goal is this season and what the team wants to accomplish as a whole.

“It’s good that Brennan got into the top 10 but we have a different goal as a team,” stated Riser. “Obviously, the goal this season is to fight and compete for the Southland Conference Championship. I know he would trade all the accolades in for a team championship. He came back and told me that ‘Alright coach, let’s get this thing done.’”

Adventures fill your soul Bora Bora, The Bahamas and Mexico may be what some think of when imagining the perfect summer vacation, but not I. My dream summer vacation is much simpler than that: an offshore fishing trip out of Islamorada, Florida.

Islamorada is comprised of six Florida Keys and is most notably known for its coral reefs and offshore fishing. My first trip there was when I was 15 years old. My family and I fished for Atlantic bluefin tuna, mahi-mahi and sailfish. The boat we ventured out on was the ‘Gonefishin V Charter Boat.’ During the fishing trip, we caught a total of 18 fish: three tuna and 15 mahi-mahi. The reason this fishing trip was so different than all of the other trips I have taken was because of the fish we caught - the mahimahi.

Also known as a common dolphinfish, the scales change color depending on its emotions, kind of like a mood ring. When the fish is content it is an aqua blue.

When stressed, it is a dark green, and when on the verge of death, it is a golden color.

Mahi-mahi fishing differs because when the fish bites, you have to wait for other fishing poles to have a bite. Otherwise, the fish will undergo stress and warn others to escape. The fish also fights like a bull and is known to jump in and out of the water to try and break

free from the line. Fish were flying into the back of the boat one after another.

The trip also differed from others because I was not looking at murky, brown Louisiana waters. The area we fished in was between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. It felt nice to fish in some waters that did not look like old chocolate milk. The waters changed between an emerald green and a dark blue.

When I was not catching fish, I was staring at the pretty waters crashing against the boat. The beautiful water and fascinating fish made the 18-hour drive worthwhile.

In addition to plenty of beaches, the southern islands also offer mangrove trails, local dining, and ease of access to the not-too-far-away Key West airport.

The worst part of the trip was the long ride back - leaving paradise to come back to humid, hot and muggy Louisiana. The car ride felt more like 18 days as I came to the realization that the only clear water I would see back at home was in a swimming pool.

I had such a great time on the trip that my family and I will be returning to Islamorada this summer.

The Florida Keys is where I go to disconnect from my everyday surroundings and can be an escape for anyone.

With its rich historical ties, Lee’s Diner has long been a fixture of Hammond’s culinary scene.

The restaurant, which originally opened in 1963, has undergone significant changes in ownership throughout its lifetime.

“It opened up as Ganus’ and stayed opened for a few years,” said Sam Tallo, co-owner of Lee’s Diner. “After, Rush’s opened, and they stayed open for about five or six years. A man named Lee Loupe then bought it and changed the name to Lee’s, and they ran it for about five years. Another owner soon purchased it, and finally, in 1996 I bought it.”

Currently, Lee’s Diner is run by Tallo and his family.

“When I bought Lee’s, it was a smaller building, and it had a rock front with the big ‘Lee’s’ sign,” shared Tallo. “I put stainless steel and black and white tiles and added all the neon. We redid all the old but tried to keep it the same. The original name was Lee’s Drive-In, but we changed it to Lee’s Diner to give it more of a feeling of variety rather than just hamburgers and french fries.”

Tallo was reluctant to purchase the diner at first because he already owned two other local restaurants, Tope La and Pepper Tree Grill & Bar. “The guy who had it before me wanted to get out of it, and he came to me and asked if I wanted to purchase it,” stated Tallo. “I didn’t really want to purchase because I was having trouble with Pepper Tree. They convinced me, as the decision was made from a ‘heart deal’ and not from a ‘head deal’ because it was a nostalgic place. I didn’t want to see someone come in and tear it down and put office buildings there.”

In 2016, devastation struck when a nearby restaurant caught on fire and burned the diner to the ground.

“The smoke, fire and heat deteriorated the booths, tables and chairs,” explained Tallo. “It took us nine months to reopen. We had to upgrade things because of the Downtown Development and Historic District as well as the fire marshals. But basically, it’s the same as it was in 1996 with just newer equipment. When we brought it back, we tried to keep it the same as when we closed it.”

While restoring the restaurant, Tallo wondered if the diner would be worth fixing.

“The customers were really the ones who pushed me to reopen Lee’s,” said Tallo.

“Physically, we couldn’t tear it down because of restrictions. It took us a lot longer and a lot more headaches, and there were many times I felt like saying ‘I don’t even know why I want to do this anymore.’ But then, a customer would come by on a daily basis to see if we reopened, and that motivated me to keep going.”

Vernon Gibbs, resident of Hammond, explained the charm of the retro ‘50s themed diner.

“We moved back over to the Northshore and have been coming here for over six years now,” stated Gibbs.

“My daughter was passing here and saw it and told us ‘Y’all got to try Lee’s.’ So, we did and have been coming here ever since. The food prices are reasonable, the breakfast menu and service is very good, and we have gotten to know a lot of the servers who’ve been here for a few years. Russell Tallo, one of the owners, has got the perfect combination with everything going on here.”

Lee’s Diner, located on West Thomas Street, is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Finding your place Immersion into campus life can start with the 123 student organizations offered at the university.

By offering opportunities to network, develop leadership abilities, be involved and have fun, student organizations can help sculpt a more well-rounded resume.

Thora Hughes, a junior general studies major, has already reaped those benefits during her undergraduate career through the Southeastern Sociological Association.

“I know I am definitely being considered for a job right now because of the fact that I am the events coordinator for SSA,” said Hughes. “I’d say that’s a big resume helper. I’m able to put it in a cover letter.

I’m able to put it in a resume, and not only does it help in the sense of like, ‘Hey, this person has that job already. They can come over here and get this job,’ it helps in the sense of teaching you more about jobs that you may want to pursue.”

Zachary Rogers, interim coordinator of leadership and service at the university, elaborated on the importance of joining a student organization.

“Being involved in a student organization is vital to a student’s education because of the unlimited possibilities granted,” shared Rogers.

“Being involved at Southeastern allows students to connect with fellow students, continue their learning outside of the classroom, network with possible future employers, enjoy your undergraduate years, and have pride in the university.”

Before getting involved in extracurriculars, Hughes was apprehensive that joining a club would take over her life.

“I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to focus on schoolwork, and really if you have the right balancing act, the

in 1-2-3 organizations don’t take over your whole life,” explained Hughes. “They just add to your life. It’s more of a benefit than a drawback.”

Graham Guillory, a senior music major, chose to get involved with the Southeastern Guitar Club because it related to his field of studies.

“I’ve gotten many offers to play gigs for various functions inside and outside of the school as a result of being a member of the guitar club,” said Guillory.

Hughes recommended that students start looking for an organization to join as soon as possible.

“You’re not going to like every club that you join, and that’s okay,” stated Hughes. “But, there is a club out there for you, and it makes a tremendous difference when you’re coming into school. You don’t know how different high school is from college until you get to college, and being in an organization might help you ease into college a lot more.”

Rogers gave four points to consider before choosing to join an organization.

“When considering an organization, join something that will have the following effect on you,” said Rogers. “A. Helps you grow into a better person or leader, B. Challenges you to think and hold an opinion of your own, C. Allows you to network and prepare you for life after college, and D. Join something that is meaningful to you.”

Through his time as an undergraduate student, Rogers gained valuable employment skills from many organizations.

Rogers shared, “I joined six organizations as an undergrad student, and each one provided me the tools to learn outside the classroom, grow as a student and a leader, connect with future employers at the university, and each organization meant something special to me, which made me want to get involved even more.”

Fun Summer Reads When looking for brain-teasing prose to soothe your fatigued mind this summer, skip the New York Times bestseller list.

Forget the cliché romance novels and generic thrillers, and pick up something a little more original in science fiction, classic literature or nonfiction.

Science Fiction lovers may enjoy “The Lost Fleet: Dauntless,”

by Jack Campbell. The 2006 novel offers the captivating tale of

Getting in shape this summer

With the loss of continuity in students’ schedules over the summer, many can struggle with maintaining healthy habits.

Dr. Ryan Green, assistant professor of athletic training, talked about the best way to stay in shape over the summer.

“The first step everyone should do is to make a personal workout or physical activity schedule,” explained Green. “Everyone has a schedule set in stone when the school year is in place because there is limited time to do things, but when it’s summer, no one has a set schedule.”

Green offered some advice on maintaining a healthy diet.

“Focus on where to eat and more specifically what to eat,” said Green. “Many people will decide at the last minute where to eat and that can lead to unhealthy meals.

If someone wants Doritos, that’s fine, but just take five chips out of the bag and save room for dinner and don’t go on a Dorito binge.”

The loss of access to amenities offered by the university over the summer can affect students’ lives.

“When people are in school, they have access to stuff like the Pennington Center, the Kinesiology pool or the two mile loop around campus,” stated Green. “It’s easy to get plugged in at school, but when people go home their communities may not have stuff like that. People also have a good nutrition source like

the Mane Dish. The Mane Dish offers a lot of healthy food to students and faculty.”

Exercising with a group of people who have the same fitness goals and healthy mindset can be beneficial, according to Green.

“It does not matter who is in your group - just join one,” clarified Green. “Don’t be picky.

It’s good to have motivation within a group of people.”

Green suggested push-ups, planks and 20 minute cycles as the best exercises to do.

“Just keep it simple,” said Green. “If that doesn’t work, then change it up. Walk to a local park and see what they have around and come up with your own hybrid workout.”

Diet trends can be found online, but Green shared that not all diets are created equal.

“Some diets work for certain people,” explained Green. “It’s not all about these diets like the Keto and Atkins diet. Make your own healthy, homemade diet. If that doesn’t work for you, then talk to a trained professional that knows what they’re doing.”

Green also touched on the monetary burden some fitness plans come with.

“Some people may not be financially stable to afford a health club or diet plan, so to that I just say to be creative,” stated Green.

“Talk to other people, learn their workout plans, see what they’re

doing. See what may be available at a second-hand workout store.”

Students staying in the Hammond area have resources such as the Pennington Student Activity Center.

“The Pennington has group exercise classes during the summer,” shared Seth Thomas, director of the Recreational Sports and Wellness. “There is a 10,000-square-foot facility that has a gym, basketball courts and an indoor track for those interested.

Over the summer, our operation hours are Monday through Friday 5:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sunday 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.”

Thomas discussed the physical and mental benefits visitors can reap from the rec center.

“The Pennington provides a chance to be more social with other people,” said Thomas. “It’s a good way to stay cool with a great air conditioning system. There’s many different types of workouts for people to do. There’s not just the fitness center - you have the track and the basketball courts also, and there’s friendly staff to assist anyone’s needs.”

A passion for singing led a student to Hollywood, California.

Ashton Gill, a sophomore nursing major, auditioned for ABC’s competition singing program “American Idol” and got a golden ticket to Hollywood after getting a “Yes” from all three judges: Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

Gill originally auditioned in New Orleans before auditioning in Idaho, where she was accompanied by her brother’s best friend and the to-be title winner Laine Hardy.

“We ended up going to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and that was absolutely beautiful,” said Gill. “I had originally told them that I want to go to California, and they called me back and asked if I could do Idaho ‘cause there were not a lot of contestants in Idaho.”

Gill performed in front of the judges on the second day of auditions in Idaho.

The judges invited Gill to Hollywood after she sang “Broken Halos” by Chris Stapleton where Hardy played the guitar for her.

“I think your nerves are getting the best of you, but I think you’ve really got something,” said Perry.

Gill shared that the thought of being on a national television show was nerve-wracking.

“Obviously, I was a little nervous just because there was these famous people you watch on TV, or you listen

to ‘em on the radio - they’re here to critique you and tell you how they like your singing,” said Gill. “But, I got three ‘Yeses’ from all three of them. So, that made me feel really good.”

While Gill’s journey in the show ended after she sang “I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt during the Hollywood Week, Hardy went on further to win the competition, and Gill feels Hardy will be very successful as a singer.

“I am very proud of him, and I am very happy for him, and I think he will be a rock star,” stated Gill.

Gill has been singing for as long as she can remember.

“I have always done music for fun, and I have always loved to sing,” expressed Gill. “It’s a hobby of mine, and I would love to pursue that.”

Even though Gill feels Hardy’s journey on the show was encouraging, she does not know if she wants to audition again.

“I have had a lot of people tell me that I should go back, but I am really thinking about it,” said Gill. “I am not sure.”

Still passionate, Gill is looking for ways to incorporate singing as part of her life next semester.

“I am going to try to do nursing during the week and really focus on that, and maybe on Friday and Saturday sing somewhere,” commented Gill.

Lions prepare for 2019 season

This year, the Lions will open up their season at home against Jacksonville State University on Aug. 29.

With Jacksonville State’s impressive history - being ranked first in the Ohio Valley Conference since 2014 - Frank Scelfo expects the first game to be a tough one.

“They truly have a great program, and they have been consistently good over a long period of time,” shared Frank Scelfo. “They are where we want to be as a football team. We hope to attack them offensively with a good rush and pass game, but when it comes down to their quarterback Zerrick Cooper, no one has stopped him ever. We can try to limit what he does, but he’s a very talented athlete.”

According to Frank Scelfo, the Lions are working hard to improve from their 4-7 season last year.

“We want to be more efficient on both sides of the football,” commented Frank Scelfo. “We want to cut down on the small stuff like penalties and turnovers. We want to be more effective and consistent throughout the whole football game.”

Frank Scelfo also believes the team lacked maturity at the beginning of last season but showed growth throughout the season and after.

“The immature people become fewer and fewer, so that will lead to less mistakes on the field,” explained Frank Scelfo. “Last year, I thought we did a good job growing offensively. We had some flashes on defense, so you take that and you feel good about it. But out of all three areas, we were most consistent on special teams. I think that tells you how good your team is when special teams is your best area.”

Over the last year, there have been multiple additions made to the coaching staff, such as Joe Scelfo, assistant football coach, Raymond Monica, assistant head football coach, and Lance Guidry, defensive coordinator.

Frank Scelfo is expecting this to increase continuity.

“The guys we brought in and hired are technicians,” explained Frank Scelfo. “We upgraded our staff to the point where they know our league.

They know our talent level, and they know how to coach.”

Frank Scelfo is reluctant to name a player to keep an eye out for due to a history of surprises.

“I have predicted in the past years what players to watch for, but I have been wrong every single time,” stated Frank Scelfo. “Each and every season, a new guy steps up, and he isn’t on your radar.”

Kelly Wells, treasurer of the Lions Athletic Association and soon-to-be president, believes the solution to improvement is simple: win more games.

“I think they did a good job keeping the intensity throughout every game this season,” said Wells. “The team had a good ‘no-quit’ mentality, I think.

There is going to be early season challenges with them facing BethuneCookman and Ole Miss. Jacksonville State will be an early test also at Strawberry Stadium, but I think Coach Scelfo will do a good job in his second year because he will be more stable and locked in.”

Tailgating season has numerous aspects to it, such as hanging out with friends, reconnecting with alumni, supporting one’s favorite team, and eating food. Regardless of the reason to attend, one aspect of preparation that remains the same is finding the perfect outfit.

One local shop, Imagine Boutique, is preparing for the wave of college students searching for green and gold attire.

“We are continuously trend forecasting and striving to provide outfits that are stylish and versatile,” said Mary-Danse Jarratt, store manager. “We specifically look for items that are green and gold and would be great for tailgates. We also have our own custom graphic tees specifically for football season.”

Jarratt believes versatility will be the trend this season.

“We love pieces that can be worn different ways and can be dressed up or down - such as graphic tees,” explained Jarratt. “We have been seeing graphic tees incorporated in dressier outfits - such as with fun pants and a blazer - and we love that trend. We also will be re-ordering our custom SLU graphic tees, which have been very popular.”

Laura Kehrer, owner of Edge Boutique, shared what accessory she expects to see take off.

“I am really excited to see how people are going to incorporate hair scarves into their tailgating outfits,” said Kehrer. “Hair scarves are the perfect accessory, and it’s perfect for adding something to your pony - especially with how hot it gets down here.”

With Hammond being a college town, local boutiques are aware that students would rather not break their banks on clothing.

According to Kehrer, Edge Boutique has competitive prices with the average price of an item ranging between $20 to $40.

“We make our prices affordable for our customers so they are able to get the most out of what they are buying,” shared Kehrer. “We also occasionally do a student discount where our college students can bring in their student ID cards to receive a discount.”

Tyra McGary, owner of Gypsy Hill Boutique, feels the wide selection of styles they carry is what sets the store apart.

“Students should shop at Gypsy Hill because they will find versatile pieces that can be worn to class, out with friends or even to interviews,” observed McGary. “We have something for any event you may need to attend during college.”

Jarratt explained how Imagine Boutique is different from other boutiques in the area.

“Students are a very big portion of our clientele, so we always have them in mind when buying and trend forecasting,” stated Jarratt. “We keep our prices very reasonable, and we always keep up with new trends. We also carry extended sizes, which sets us apart from other stores in the area.”

Hammond boutiques are dedicated to finding the best styles for fans to support the Lions at their home games this upcoming season.

“We also love getting items that are light for tailgating since it is very warm during football season,” said Kehrer. “We have plenty of styles and options.”

Channel ranked #1

Another award for the Southeastern Channel means another opportunity to commend the student workers and faculty who helped make it possible.

Placing first in the nation for “Best Video Comedy” last October, the award presented by College Broadcasters, Inc. adds to the over 400 international, national, and regional awards secured by the university station during its 16 years of existence. The accolade was given to the student-driven comedy show, “College Night.”

Rick Settoon, general manager for the Southeastern Channel, shared that the award is an indication of the type of experience the station provides.

“It shows that we’re doing a really good job of developing young filmmakers,” explained Settoon. “In addition to all of the other production projects they’ll have produced at the Southeastern Channel by the time they graduate, they’ll be able to show prospective employers, production companies and investors that they can produce some really good comedy.”

The award-winning episode, produced by Jordan Reid, a senior communication major, was selected out of over 950 entries from universities and colleges nationwide.

“I think this episode was able to win first because we had a variety of people working on it,” shared Reid. “We had a funny group of writers. I also think passion drives people to do great things. We were able to let people take control of their ideas and find others who could help them execute them.”

Tyler Guidroz, who graduated this spring, was co-producer for the show.

Guidroz felt conflicting emotions when the show won.

“I’m not surprised the show won an award,” explained Guidroz. “It was definitely surprising though at the same time.

So you kind of know it’s gonna happen and you expect it, but when you actually get that, it’s a really cool feeling inside.”

In addition to winning first in the nation for “Best Video Comedy,” the channel also won second in the nation for “Best News Reporting Video,” second in the nation for “Best PSA Video,” and third in the nation for “Best Sportscast Video.”

To watch an episode of “College Night,” tune into the Southeastern Channel every Friday and Sunday night at 10 p.m.

Coming in July, the Southeastern Channel can also be accessed on Roku, Apple TV, Google Chromecast, and Amazon Fire TV Stick, according to Settoon.

“We’ll set up a meeting at the channel where we’ll discuss your interest and get you plugged in,” shared Settoon. “A surefire way is to be enrolling in the television, film and video production classes in the Department of Communication and Media Studies.”

Rocquin selected as The Louisiana Legislative Women’s Caucus Foundation Scholarship awarded Victoria Rocquin, a junior communication major, the Women of Excellence Award this spring.

The LLWCF is a nonprofit organization comprised of female legislators currently serving in the Louisiana Legislature.

With a focus area in organizational communication and a minor in Spanish, she is the vice-president of the Honor’s Club, a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America, the Baptist Collegiate Ministry and the National Society of Leadership and Success while also holding four certifications in media topics.

Rocquin has dedicated countless hours to her passion and believes that aided her in being chosen as a recipient of this award.

“I’ve spent a lot of time volunteering, advocating for causes I care about through public speaking, and investing in my community,” shared Rocquin.

Two college students each year are chosen for this award based on integrity, character, leadership and service to others and who exhibit high levels of work and academic standards.

Although Rocquin has won more than 20 international, national and state awards for public speaking, she feels that giving back to the community is more vital than all of these and believes that this is what set her application apart - along with a glowing letter of recommendation.

“I took a gap semester to do mission work and intern at a church in Irkutsk, Siberia,” explained Rocquin. “I think that always fascinates people. Dr. Procopio wrote me an amazing recommendation letter. If you’re applying for a scholarship, I definitely recommend asking someone early who cares about you and is a good writer.”

Woman of Excellence In the recommendation letter Dr. Claire Procopio, professor of communication and honors director for the university, explained her first encounter with Rocquin.

“I first met Victoria when she arrived at Southeastern in January of 2018,” said Procopio. “She was fresh back from Siberia and inquiring about how she could take on the more advanced challenge of Honors Program courses. In that first encounter, I knew Victoria would be a shining light. A student returning from the coldest city on earth in January isn’t a routine thing.”

Rocquin’s leadership abilities are a glisten of her character as she finds ways to utilize her skills to better her community.

“One impressive fact about Victoria’s record of service is how often she is the leader - even creating organizations to address a community need,” explained Procopio. “A second special thing about Victoria’s commitment to community service is how often she is able to bring her excellence in her area of specialty communication - into her service endeavors.”

Since it was her first time applying and other women she spoke with applied for multiple years before winning, Rocquin was not expecting to receive the award.

“Knowing I was included in an incredible list of women who serve their communities and are doing awesome things in the world is quite an honor,” expressed Rocquin.

Rocquin’s parents are a major support system in her life and have influenced many of her decisions.

“They have always challenged me to be the best version of myself, and inspired me to strive to live an other-focused and Christlike life,” explained Rocquin. “I’m definitely still learning how to do that, but I think this award signifies I’m on the right track. I was also motivated by reading the stories of past award winners.”

While being surrounded by so many inspiring people at the Governor’s Mansion, where she received the award, Rocquin felt empowered to continue doing her best.

“I felt like I was bumping elbows with Wonder Woman all night,” said Rocquin.

“Being there definitely inspired me to strive to serve and lead better. The scholarship itself is a blessing that will help me focus on my studies, as well as the various campus activities I’m involved in.”

When young adults leave home for college, families learn to adjust to the change of day-today functions.

With incoming students entering a world of new responsibilities, some guardians struggle to give them space.

Marcela Spicuzza, mental health counselor at the University Counseling Center, noted that

many parents want to be involved as much as possible in their child’s college experience, but this can also create challenges.

“Parents oftentimes have difficulty letting their children go off on their own and letting go of control of various aspects of their child’s life,” said Spicuzza. “However, students are charged with their own schedules and academics, which parents do not always have access to. This can create some frustration or confusion for parents who want to be as supportive as they can be.”

It is natural for their children to seek independence and want to go out on their own, and it is OK to encourage this.”

According to Spicuzza, resources are available to help students and their families prepare for the transition into college life. She suggested that parents and students ask questions during orientation so they know what to expect before college begins.

Spicuzza also recommends consultations with college advisors and high school counselors to help foster conversations of expectations and concerns.

“I would advise parents to remember that it is natural for their children to seek independence and want to go out on their own, and it is OK to encourage this,” shared Spicuzza. “College can be a time of growth and reflection if one allows it to be so. Preparing their children to be

resourceful and critical thinkers can also ease the transition into college.”

She discussed common issues freshmen face while adapting to life without their guardians.

“For many, learning how to balance school, work, social life and self-care is challenging when entering college,” explained Spicuzza. “In high school and younger, students are often told how to take care of themselves and what their responsibilities are by parents and teachers. In college, students have to figure most of this out on their own, which can be overwhelming.”

To help students conquer the challenges they face, Spicuzza encourages them to take initiative and reach out for assistance when needed.

“Taking care of themselves in the midst of a lot of transition is key, as well as looking to others for resources and support,” stated Spicuzza.

“Joining organizations on campus, getting a job, finding mentors, et cetera, can help with this process.”

Staying cool this summer Amidst barbecues, crawfish boils, beach adventures and tubing trips, knowing how to keep cool helps ensure everyone has fun and stays safe during the hot summer months.

Dr. Ryan Green, assistant professor of athletic training, discussed why it is important to stay hydrated.

“Every cell, every piece of tissue, every function in the body depends on water for it to maintain normal status,” shared Green. “So, without adequate levels of this essential nutrient, all these parts I just mentioned, and even those that I didn’t, would not function normally.”

For those tired of plain water, he suggests adding fresh lime, lemon, cucumber slices or mint leaves to their drinks.

“If you have just had it with water of any sort, I like cold coconut water, the pure kind and not those with artificial fillers, as a great summer treat as it has many wonderful nutrients in it to help us go during the summer,” said Green. “For example, sodium, manganese and potassium all are catalysts to help the body function.”

Not all beverages are the same when it comes to hydration, explained Green.

“Alcohol is certainly one to avoid as it tends to deplete fluid stores quickly,” advised Green. “Caffeinated beverages, like coffee, tea, sports drinks and sugary drinks - like energy drinks and sports drinks - tend to increase levels of dehydration.”

In addition to cool drinks, another way to keep cool can be by picking the right times to work out.

Green suggested working out before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m. if the exercise is outdoors.

“It may be humid, but the ground and buildings have not had a chance to absorb the heat,” said Green. “Later in the day, those buildings and streets act like an oven radiating the heat that they have absorbed all day long.”

Wearing clothing that pulls sweat away from the body, using sunscreen, and choosing activities like swimming can also help ensure that everyone has a good time.

“I like to be outside no matter the time of year,” shared Green. “So, I think that if you can pick the cooler times of day, bring adequate hydrating fluids, and wear the proper gear, getting outside and enjoying your normal activities is not out of the question - but not following these guidelines can set you up for difficulty.”

Peppermint Cooling Spray: 4-6 oz water 2tsp witch hazel 8 drops peppermint essential oil 2 drops lavender essential oil Mix in 8 oz spray bottle and voila! Air conditioning in a bottle.

Watermelon Popsicles:

3 cups cubed watermelon 1 cup strawberries Zest and juice of 1 lime

Puree in blender until smooth. Pour into Popsicle mold and freeze. Tasty treats in just 3-4 hours!

Vodka Lemonade to go 3/4 cup agave nectar 8 cups water 4-5 fresh lemons, juiced 1 cup vodka Fresh Lemon and Lime Slices for garnish

Mix all ingredients in a pitcher. Pour into 8-10 zipclosed bags and add a few lemon and lime slices. Chill until ready to serve.

Aloe Vera Ice Cubes: 1 container aloe vera gel 1 ice mold

Pour aloe vera gel into ice tray and freeze.

Once frozen, use to soothe sunburned skin!

DIY Summer Hacks

A new taste in town A family-owned cafe in Hammond hosts a relaxed atmosphere while serving coffee and food to the community.

Located on North Cate Street, Courtyard Cafe opened in October 2017. Owners Rose and Bryan Wong got the idea of selling Hawaiian ice and crepes while on vacation.

The idea for selling coffee came later when Rose and Bryan Wong partnered with Mojo Coffee House, who trained the first baristas of Courtyard Cafe.

“With it being sort of this collaborative team effort to try to do something really special, that’s when I kind of reached out to Mojo,” explained Rose Wong.

“I reached out to probably 10 to 15 different coffee

companies, and Mojo was so amazing.”

Hannah Rogers, a barista since 2018, grew up in Hammond and attended Tulane University where Mojo Coffee was prominent.

Since Rogers is around coffee all day, her favorite item on the menu is a stronger beverage.

Rogers shared, “My favorite thing is the cortado, which is equal parts espresso and steamed milk with a little bit of foam on top, and if you wanted to add a flavor, our Cuban is really good with the condensed milk and the cinnamon.”

With the university down the road, Rose Wong explained that she keeps the college atmosphere embedded within the business.

“We always try to make sure that it’s super affordable for everybody and also super fun,” said Rose Wong.

“Even the baristas that work here, I always tell them, ‘You’re here to have fun. Don’t take anything too seriously. If something’s going on, I’m always here to support you guys, and we’ll figure it out.’”

Customers can expect a calm and personable atmosphere, according to Rogers.

“The aesthetic is really nice in there, and there’s a really chill vibe,” discussed Rogers. “Because there’s a bar, you get to know the people there. It’s so much fun to go in there and talk to people and see each other.”

Luke LeBlanc, a former barista, now visits Courtyard

Cafe as a customer. Having met close friends through the eatery, LeBlanc shared how Courtyard Cafe has two climates that work well together.

“It’s very sociable, yet it’s also just a good place to come study and hang out – study, relax, or just get away from school,” explained LeBlanc.

Since opening Courtyard Cafe, Rose Wong learned that owning a business can be filled with positive surprises.

“We kind of had an idea in mind on how things were going to go, but it just took on a life of its own,” shared Rose Wong. “There’s such a coffee culture here that is really shocking to me.”

Setting a Green Example In case you have not heard yet, the Earth is pretty much doomed. Earlier this year, news reports stated that 1 million species are expected to go extinct due to humans. With record breaking natural disasters happening regularly, I believe we have long since reached the point that you can no longer deny climate change. I get it. It’s scary, but we have to do better. Humans are amazing creatures capable of remarkable things. However, we are nothing without Mother Nature.

A mother supports, encourages and nourishes her children, and when you lose that, you lose everything. Mother Nature is no different than a familial mother in this sense. We have to take care of our parents, and we have to take care of the Earth. While we wait for the government to decide that protecting the environment is more important than preventing panic, because we should be panicking, here are some steps we can all take to be more Eco-friendly.

Once a year, some of the most beautiful and talented women across the state gather in West Monroe to compete for the title of Miss Louisiana. Since the 1970s, the university has sent a representative as Miss Southeastern Louisiana University, and this year Chelsey Blank, a junior accounting major, has been selected.

Since being crowned in November, Blank has been preparing in multiple aspects such as staying up to date with current events, practicing her tap dance, and applying rhinestones to her costumes.

With changes to the pageant last year, Blank has been working especially hard to prepare for the new portion of competition.

“The social impact statement portion is now in place of the swimsuit competition,” explained Blank.

“Since this is a new section of the competition, I am going to put together what I think is best for the 10 seconds allowed.”

After dancing for almost her whole life, Blank says she is particularly looking forward to the talent portion.

“However, if I were to pick something that is not so natural for me, I’d have to say interview,” confessed Blank. “I love having conversations and getting to know people.”

As excited as Blank has been, she has struggled balancing school, duties and preparations.

“The most challenging part would have to be being a full-time student,” noted Blank. “Now that school is over, I have a lot more time to focus on preparations. During the semester was difficult but not impossible. I managed to keep my 4.0 GPA, join more organizations, and watch new traditions begin - all while preparing for the Miss Louisiana contest and appearing at over thirty events this past spring semester.”

Although it was difficult, the challenge proved to

be the most satisfactory part of the experience so far.

“I love being busy, and succeeding at being busy is all the more rewarding,” said Blank. “I love my school, and I couldn’t be more proud to represent it every day as Miss Southeastern.”

In the face of her apprehensions, Blank shares her secret to remaining calm.

“I do have confidence in myself, but I’m worried there may be times that I’m not sure what to do or where to go,” shared Blank. “However, I’m a ‘gowith-the-flow’ kind of girl, so I usually make things work as much as possible. Positivity is key in uncertain situations.”

According to Blank, as her reign passes, she is looking forward to keeping the connections she has made.

“Without these people - the candidates, the Special Olympics volunteers, the school faculty and staff, et cetera - none of it would be possible,” said Blank.

“This experience has been so wonderful, and I will forever be grateful that I’m a candidate to potentially be the next Miss Louisiana.”

Throughout her journey, Blank has felt support from those around her.

She expressed her gratefulness to her mother in particular.

“I owe a lot of the credit to my mom for always making sure I’m on top of my game,” stated Blank.

“My family and friends have been really supportive as well. All in all, I feel well prepared, and I cannot wait for this experience.”

The pageant will take place at the Monroe Civic Center in the W.L. “Jack” Howard Theatre June 2022. Tickets go on sale June 1 and can be purchased online through Ticketmaster. The competition can also be viewed on local channels across the state. Check your local listings.

The days get longer, the sun gets hotter, and best of all your free time increases. So I’ve heard at least.

I have been very busy since school let out, and things are not going to slow down any time soon. However, I am not going to let that stop me from enjoying the next couple of months.

With the academic year being August to May, summer is a time of new beginnings, reinvention and planning. All the stress from the previous semester flies away as you plan to prevent that same stress from happening again next semester.

Whether you are an incoming freshman, a jaded junior, a soon-tobe senior or any other level collegian, you are taking this time to prepare for the next step in your life.

Whatever you need to prepare for, I hope this magazine can help.

With success stories of real-life students and alumni, summer-themed opinions and stories about planning for the future, this magazine just might inspire you to make some goals and achieve them.

Time management is the single most valuable skill in my opinion. If you can balance your time properly, you can achieve anything.

That is the bright and

optimistic feel I wish to convey with this publication.

Here at The Lion’s Roar, we will be working all sumer long to prepare for the 20192020 school year to improve our writing, photography, layout and social media. I already have my to-do lists printed out and ready to go!

Do not let this summer pass you by.

As you read about the amazing things your classmates have achieved, think about what you are wanting in life and go after it. As I said, summer is a time for new beginnings, reinvention and, most importantly, planning.
