Cubs become Lions

AlumniJeremy Lloyd, Jennifer Jarreau and William Takewell are examples of the proclamations of success on the university’s website.

While at the university, Lloyd was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., won Southeastern Star, and was a recipient of the Dr. S LaVanner Role Model of the Year Award in 2013. Jarreau was crowned 2012 Miss Southeastern Louisiana University and named the Outstanding Graduate in General Studies. Takewell was the 2011 Division for Student Affairs Man of the Year.

Lloyd studied vocal performance at the university and is currently employed in the Tangipahoa school system as an Performing Arts educator at Hammond Eastside Elementary Magnet school. He teaches grades pre-k through 5th.

Lloyd stated that attending the university aided him in setting goals.

“An important lesson Southeastern taught me was to set goals, both big and small. From that lesson, I learned everything will happen when it’s supposed to and how it’s supposed to.”

Jarreau resides in New Orleans where she works at Ochsner Health System as the business development representative of neurosciences. She is also an NFL cheerleader for the New Orleans Saints.

For Jarreau, attending the university helped her attain qualities helpful to her career.

“Southeastern’s College of Business helped me build a strong foundation for a career in marketing and sales,” said Jarreau. “Earning my Masters in Business Administration truly set me apart when interviewing and helped me position myself as a key player for corporations.”

Jarreau shared important lessons she learned at the university.

“Live in the present,” said Jarreau. “Stop rushing through life and enjoy the little moments that you have today because time goes by way too quickly. Also, be a ‘yes’ person. Whenever a good opportunity presents itself, take it. Join the organization, attend the sporting event, go on study abroad. These opportunities help you make great friends and the best memories when you look back on your time at Southeastern.”

Takewell attended the university from 2009-2012, majored in organizational communication, and is now the assistant director of fraternity and sorority life at the University of Kentucky.

“I figured out that I wanted to be involved with student affairs full time because of my involvement with the Student Government Association, working in fraternity and sorority life, and then being an orientation leader,” explained Takewell. “Doing all that stuff was what set me up to figure out that I actually had a passion for doing this work and a passion for working with college students. Had it not been for Southeastern, I would have never found that passion.”

Jarreau offered a word of encouragement for all students.

“You’re not supposed to know everything yet,” shared Jarreau. “No clue what you want to major in or what you’re supposed to do with your life? It’s OK. I changed my major senior year, and I turned out just fine. Continue to learn about yourself every day, follow your passions, pray about it, and you’ll end up exactly where you’re supposed to be.”

Practicing to achieve perfection Starting his last season for the men’s basketball team, senior guard Marlain Veal reflected on his time at the university.

“I have learned a lot since playing here at Southeastern,” said Veal. “I learned that patience is key when it comes to basketball and sometimes taking it 50 miles per hour is better than taking it a 100 miles per hour. I learned that the simpler your game is, the better it is.”

Veal, a Gretna native, collected many accolades while in high school such as The Times-Picayune Large Schools Player of the year, The New Orleans Advocate All-Metro team, District 8-5A MVP and MVP in the Louisiana High School Coaches Association All-Star game.

During his freshman year at the university, Veal started 23 of 33 games and averaged 21.7 minutes per game. He reached a peak of 19 points against McNeese State University in an 82-80 victory for the university in his freshman season as well as scoring 18 points and earning nine assists against Southland Conference rival Northwestern State University.

Veal feels that he has grown a lot since he joined the university’s team.

“I came in as a ‘know it all freshman,’ and I quickly learned that I didn’t really know anything,” shared Veal. “I have also learned how to become a coach on the court and learned how to communicate to other players during the game. Managing the game is a key component too.”

In his sophomore year, Veal played all 32 games and started in 31 of them. Veal broke the record books for the university as he climbed to ninth in assists with 242 and tied for fourth on the university all time season list with 58 steals. Veal led the team in points per game with 14.5 and made the top 10 in the Southland Conference. He also reached a career high in points in his sophomore campaign, dropping 28 points against Nicholls State University in an 87-70 victory.

During his junior year, Veal was named to the All-Southland First Team and helped the university secure the number one seed in the Southland Conference tournament.

“My favorite memory so far is cutting down that net when we beat Nicholls last season to secure the number one seed in the Southland tournament,” shared Veal. “It meant a lot to me and my teammates because it showed us how all of our hard work paid off. We hope to do that again this season.”

Veal shared the challenges he faces as a student-athlete.

“The biggest challenge is having three classes between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. and figuring out when to eat,” said Veal. “We also have film at 2:30, so managing class time and lunch is hard. Finding extra time to workout and to do extra training is hard too.”

Veal aspires to win the Southland Conference tournament and to make it to the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament this season. Veal will graduate in May with a degree in communication.

She came with a vision A vision for encouraging student leadership propelled Macey Crovetto into her job as the Greek life and student organizations coordinator where she oversees 108 organizations.

Promoted from her position as admissions recruiter in July, Crovetto understands that she wears many hats with her new job. In addition to handling programming for Greek life and student organizations, she is also in charge of managing their leadership training and development and making sure that paperwork for events is turned in on time.

In the face of a division b e t w e e n non-Greek organizations and Greek life, Crovetto believes more crossover between the two groups can help student development.

Crovetto produced some ideas that she wants to implement.

Crovetto explained, “One of my goals is to do a larger community service project that will involve all of the student organizations, mixing everybody up a little bit, allowing people to meet other students that they might not be familiar with, and having something where our students leaders can look back and say, ‘Hey, we did this together.’”

Blake Luna, a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, believes organizing

special events on campus is where Crovetto shines.

Luna said, “She does do a lot with planning events and managing those events, so I feel like that’s when she’s at her strong suit - when managing those big events on campus.”

Luna found Crovetto to be receptive to student ideas.

“We’ve always gone to her with ideas just for Greek life in general, and she’s always listened to ‘em and has taken them into account,” said Luna.

Crovetto is eager to see students use the skills they learned from being in student organizations at the university.

“They’re all very ambitious and determined,” shared Crovetto. “They all have these very clear thoughts of where they want to see things go, and everybody seems to really want to take what they have and grow it, and I love that.”

In addition to admiring the ambitions of the student organizations, Crovetto has a couple ambitions of her own.

“I would love to see, as we continue to develop our overall student-leader community, more programming that involves both Greek life and nonGreek student organizations,” said Crovetto.

“One of my goals is to do a larger community service project,” said Crovetto.

Getting involved by getting others involved Gabrielle “Gi” Levet, student event manager for Campus Activities Board, believes that getting involved with organizations on campus can serve the best interest of all students when it comes to gaining experience and enriching their abilities.

“She is one of just two event managers, making her the senior event manager,” said Nick Elliott, coordinator of CAB. “She works on the planning and execution of anywhere between three or four events a month on her own, but works with the entire team for larger events like ‘Gumbo Ya Ya’ and ‘Strawberry Jubilee.’”

During her two years with CAB, Levet acquired skills that will carry into her career.

“Working with CAB has taught me so much,” explained Levet.

“Working here has helped me learn about creating and maintaining a budget. I used to struggle with that a lot.

Working here has helped me with organization, time management. It has taught me to think of the best and worst-case scenarios and be prepared for them, and it has taught me how to prioritize my life.”

Levet’s journey to CAB began when she attended her first event on campus in the fall of 2016.

“It was an event called

‘Capture the Flag,’ and when I was there, I loved not knowing everybody,” shared Levet. “I loved how even though no one knew me, everyone treated me like I was a part of the family.

At that point, I fell in love with Southeastern and made it my mission to get involved.”

According to Levet, her job title as an event manager entails more than what it implies.

“I construct and manage a budget, and I work with our membership leader to train and work with our committee to execute events,” explained Levet. “I maintain communication with agents, artists and vendors, negotiating costs when necessary. I chair two committees: the Planning Committee and the Marketing Committee. I work closely with our public relations head and event marketing head to coordinate program publicity.”

Elliott shared how Levet’s personality impacts CAB and her

team.

“She is always sharing motivational quotes and inspiration with her team to make sure they are as cohesive as possible,” said Elliott. “Gi has a very positive influence on the team, and the days she is off or not in the office is known, and not just because it’s a little quieter without her, but because her joyful energy is not present.”

The inclusive atmosphere of CAB drew in Levet.

“I love the sense of unity at CAB,” said Levet.

“All of us employees feel important and included.

We also are all held to the same standard and pushed to reach our full potential. A challenge in working at CAB is maintaining that balance between planning events at Southeastern and actually attending Southeastern. That has been challenging in the past, but with the help of my manager and co-workers, it has been attainable and manageable.”

Elliott described Levet as being passionate about her job.

“She will go above and beyond to make sure her events are to perfection,” expressed Elliott. “This passion really makes her a joy to work with every day. Her personality really comes out on the day of events and the smile on her face when the event is running.”

Hammond gets lit E

very week, a group gathers in Cate Square Park to play with fire. The group, called Illuminating Wonders, practices a particular art form known as Flow Arts.

This style of art is comprised of movement focusing on dancing, juggling and spinning fire as well as object manipulation in dark environments, which creates a bridge between physical activity and art.

Adrianna Bourgeois, founder of the group, shared how her flow journey to Hammond began.

“I saw it on Instagram one day and had been going through a lot in my life,” said Bourgeois. “I would practice every single day for a year. Now, I have the skill level of someone who has been doing this for five years.”

Her passion grew as she found others with the same talent and passion as she had.

“I met some people from the Baton Rouge Fire Guild, but I wanted to go somewhere else and spread the love of what I love,” said Bourgeois. “That’s when I met Madison Decote on Facebook, and we decided to start Illuminating Wonders together.”

The group has grown from two people to over 20 who participate each week.

“We usually have about 25 people, and once, we had 50 when there was an event going on downtown, which was awesome,” said Bourgeois. “We usually flow together just in the park, but we can also be booked for events like fairs or festivals.”

After a year and four months of gathering weekly, Bourgeois shared what her time participating in flow arts has taught her.

“I love finding new ways to show other people how to do something,” said Bourgeois. “You can’t really help someone. It’s more of a watch and try it out for yourself kind of thing.”

For Bourgeois, the bonds that she made with others through this hobby have been unlike any other.

“I have met so many good-hearted people since I’ve started,” said Bourgeois. “I have gotten the chance to meet so many famous flow artists that are so skilled and talented that I never thought I would ever see.”

Bourgeois invites anyone who is interested in flow art to join Illuminating Wonders.

“We are always open to anyone who wants to join,” said Bourgeois. “We are just a group of people who all love the same thing and join together. Just come stop by and join in.”

Illuminating Wonders meets at Cate Square Park on Fridays at 8:30 p.m., weather permitting.

“I love that I can learn something new and show others, and they try it out,” expressed Bourgeois. “It’s a beautiful thing to grow and share ideas and new things with people who have the same love as me.”

‘The Big Event’ evolves

Participants of “The Big Event,” a day dedicated to thanking the community through service since 1982, will see structural changes this semester.

“The Big Event” gathers teams of students from the university to engage with local businesses and residents in service-oriented tasks. This year, “The Big Event” is scheduled for March 30, and the backup date is April 6.

Karley Bordelon, Student Government Association director of traditions, explained why more businesses and groups in Hammond are needed for “The Big Event” this year.

“We actually have our Upward Bound program students participating this year,” said Bordelon. “So, we’re really excited to have about 300 of them come out to join Southeastern students to help give back to the community as well.”

Under SGA, the planning committee is comprised of seven members including Bordelon. According to Bordelon, the committee started planning for “The Big Event” during the winter break, and organizations such as Precious Souls Canine Rescue and Sanctuary and the Greater Hammond Chamber of Commerce have signed up. Churches also call upon volunteers to help with projects.

Bordelon explained another factor that differs from last year.

“We’re going to get the volunteers to meet once before ‘The Big Event,’” said Bordelon. “So, we’re doing a prep day before to where we can kind of show them how to hand out tools, T-shirts, food, all the protocol for the morning of ‘The Big Event.’”

Participants will receive their T-shirts at the preparation meeting.

Additionally, all tools will be provided by SGA. Breakfast and lunch will be handed out to volunteers. All projects begin at 8 a.m., and students are expected to arrive beforehand.

“It’s nice to just kind of know what we’re going into and to just be able to build on what leaders have made ‘The Big Event’ in the previous years,” said Bordelon. “Participating last year has been incredible. I actually got to serve as a volunteer last year with tool distribution and stuff, and I think it just has a special place in my heart, with Southeastern and with the community, because I have grown up in Hammond, Louisiana.”

Last year, seeing the event’s presence in the local community impacted Bordelon.

Bordelon shared, “As I was driving to the job site last year, I could see so many Southeastern students, even on this one strip downtown, some by the church, some by the chamber, and you saw their shirts. It was really cool to kind of be able to visually see the students throughout the community.”

Madisyn Bankston, the outreach coordinator for “The Big Event,” encouraged students to volunteer. “‘The Big Event’ is a day of service and a day to be a part of something much bigger than yourself,” explained Bankston. “Sign up and ‘Lion Up.’” Registration can be found at southeastern.edu/bigevent. The deadline for teams, individuals and businesses to register is March 1.

Last day to return textbooks without a fine

The University Police Department will introduce the emergency opioid overdose treatment drug naloxone for student safety.

Narcan is the first and only FDAapproved nasal form of naloxone and is used for emergency treatment of a known or suspected opioid overdose.

Currently, the UPD has not started to use the Narcan nasal spray. Patrick Gipson, UPD lieutenant, shared that the UPD has not had cases of opioid overdose with students so far.

“The times that our department has interacted with someone has not been with students,” said Gipson. “It has been with non-students who come to use the campus facilities.”

Various departments on campus like the University Health Center, Division for Student Affairs and the School of Nursing will be working on a partnership to create a safe environment on campus.

Gipson believes the introduction of the emergency treatment will have a positive impact on the campus environment.

“As the police department of the university, we deal with anything that happens on university grounds whether it is students or not,” explained Gipson.

“So, having this available helps us, the

Gipson said, “We receive training on when we are and are not supposed to administer it, and the medical professionals who started to train us have told us that administering this

substance to someone who might not have experienced an opioid overuse is not going to harm them.”

The Narcan website instructs that the nasal spray should be administered only in cases of emergency and should not take the place of medical care. The patient must be given “emergency medical help right away after giving the first dose of Narcan Nasal Spray.”

Professional medical help will follow the UPD’s first contact.

“We are not the end point of the medical assistance the person is going to get,” said Gipson. “We are just the beginning. We are going to be the first people to arrive, and when we get there, we are going to help until an ambulance gets there to take them to the hospital.

So, there will be a lot more going on than just what we do. We are just the first step in the process of helping save a life.”

Remembering Zachary Taylor Hall Sept. 5, 2018 began the demolition of a 56-year-old piece of university history. Zachary Taylor Hall, no longer able to effectively serve its purpose, was torn down last semester after new residence halls, Ascension Hall and Twelve Oaks Hall, were constructed.

Kenneth Howe, director of facility planning, explained the purpose of the residence hall’s demolition.

“Zachary Taylor Hall served the campus community well for many decades, but its infrastructure systems had begun to deteriorate to the point that repair requirements and costs made it necessary to demolish the structure,” Howe said,.

Zachary Taylor was a coed residence hall with private rooms and a few double rooms. Male students stayed in the west wing while female students stayed in the east wing of the building. Former residents took to Facebook to share memories when the demolition began.

After living on the third floor of Zachary Taylor for a year, Helen Launey, a resident assistant, found the building to be unique.

“It had the largest lobby area out of all of the residence halls on campus and a massive courtyard in the middle of the building,” shared Launey. “The lobby had a ping pong table and a TV for residents to utilize. The courtyard was my favorite part of the physical building. It was our own private getaway, a retreat from reality, where we were free to embody our inner selves and relax. It was peaceful. I miss it a lot. We even hosted an ‘Aloha ZT Party’ at the end of spring semester for our residents.”

Howe discussed the university’s plans for the space where Zachary Taylor once stood.

“The site is now being used to complete the geothermal fields that will heat and cool the new facilities as well as allow additional parking to be constructed,” said Howe. “We are very pleased with the plans to date and look forward to their completion in the spring.”

With grey skies and cloudy days, fireworks and New Year cliches, January brings with it a bittersweet feeling.

To me, going into the spring semester brings with it the same feeling as beginnings and youth and New York City.

A feeling I can only think to describe as an empty hope - anything is possible because you have nothing.

My spring semester is going to be filled with new experiences and responsibilities, and honestly, I am nervous about balancing it all.

I anticipate the times ahead to be unfamiliar, strange and challenging yet marvelous. I will continue to work towards my goals of increasing connections with the community and providing high quality content more pertinent to a college readership. With the help of my staff, I hope 2019 will bring the best “The Lion’s Roar” yet.
