EDITORIAL

Christmas break has come to an end, and a new semester is upon us. Just like a new semester is beginning, so is a new era at The Lion’s Roar.

I would have never thought that two and a half years ago, when I walked into The Lion’s Roar office, that I would be sitting in the Editor in Chief’s chair today. I began as a staff reporter when I was a sophomore, then I trained to get my title of

Copy Editor and now I am in my second semester of my senior year as Editor in Chief. It’s scary to think that I have accomplished so much in less than three years.

In the past when I pictured myself doing this job, I saw myself just writing for the newspaper. I have learned that it is so much more than just writing.

It is giving the campus everything it needs to know about what is going on in Lion athletics, on campus, off campus, in the art community and in our world.

I have worked under four different Editors in Chief. I have watched how they have handled certain situations and how they completed, a newspaper from start to finish on a weekly basis.

I will be honest. It is a long and

during the season which means I drive back and forth to Hammond weekly. This can also be tiring.

The key to me being able to handle the driving back and forth, my Swoop Troop job and my job as editor is time management. I would not be where I am without time management. It is important to keep a calendar updated on everything I need to do for school as well as when I work and what articles need to be done so I can fulfill my job duties both here on the paper and for the Pelicans.

It seems like a lot, but I am ready to tackle anything that is in front of me. I have set goals for this semester, and I am going to EDITORIAL continued on pg. 13

tiring process, but nothing is better than seeing something the staff and I have created in print on the stands. All the hard work and tiring nights of writing completely pays off when I see students reading our newspaper on campus.

I will be the first to admit that I am terrified of the journey ahead, but I feel that God does not put anything in my life that I cannot handle. I am sure there will be a lot of obstacles this semester, but there is always a way to overcome them.

One of my obstacles this semester will definitely be my other job. I work for the New Orleans Pelicans as a member of their Swoop Troop Interactive Squad. I work most of the games

MISS SOUTHEASTERN PROMOTES BOOK IT TO SUCCESS

By Larshell Green - A&E Editor As a new Miss Southeastern prepares to represent the university for an entire year through her reign, she intends to focus on being a role model. She will spread the message of childhood literacy while achieving personal growth.

The annual Miss Southeastern Pageant hosted by Campus Activities Board was judged on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. in Pottle Auditorium.

Kristyn Gary was awarded Miss Congeniality and shared how she felt after she was officially crowned.

“The moment they called my name as Miss Southeastern 2017, I felt so many emotions,” said Gary. “I was so honored and proud.

I could not stop smiling.”

Right before her crowning, Gary admitted that her favorite moment involved bonding backstage with her fellow contestants.

“All of the contestants were standing backstage and I could feel a sense of relief and accomplishment,” said Gary. “We were all proud of ourselves and each other.”

According to Gary, the process of preparing for Miss Southeastern began with filling out forms and focusing on her platform Book it to Success.

“Once they were submitted, I began working every day towards my goals by preparing myself physically and mentally for every part of the pageant,” said Gary.

Preparation for Miss Southeastern 2017 proved to be difficult but rewarding for Gary in the long run.

“I believe in working as hard as possible to reach my goals so I really worked hard to prepare for this pageant,” said Gary.

“Although the preparation was not easy, I am thankful for it because I truly feel like I grew as a person throughout the process.”

Gary’s platform is called Book it to Success and is intended to promote early childhood literacy.

“Statistics show that children that are read to every day from birth have higher scores in school,” said Gary. “Unfortunately, not every child has books in their home.”

As a sophomore childhood early education major, Gary views childhood literacy as a very important cause that she has the opportunity to assist in through her reign as queen.

“This issue is very important to me and as Miss Southeastern I can be the voice and the helping hand to get these children the resources they need to reach their full potential,” said Gary. “I plan on collecting books and donating them to local schools, hospitals and childcare centers. I also plan on attending events to promote my platform so that more people are aware of the importance of early childhood literacy.”

Gary, who was introduced to pageants at six-months-old, admitted that she remembered enjoying dressing up and having fun on stage.

From her younger days of pageants to her current reign over the university, Gary has stated that she has gained knowledge throughout her recent experiences.

“This whole process has been a learning experience for me,” said Gary. “Throughout life, my parents have always told me ‘to stay true to myself.’ This pageant taught me a lot about the

Gary shared her hopes for the upcoming year with her new role as Miss Southeastern 2017.

“I hope to be a great representative of Southeastern Louisiana University,” said Gary. “I hope to be a positive role model for people of all ages. I also hope to educate as many people as possible about my platform so that I can make a difference in our youth and be a voice for the children.”

CHRISTMAS TREES CAN SAVE THE COASTLINE

By Makayla Abney - Staff Reporter The coastline of the state is in jeopardy of erosion, so the Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station is urging individuals to donate discarded Christmas trees instead of throwing them out.

The process of using the donated trees is beneficial in the wetland rebuilding process.

“Christmas trees, when you put them into the marsh and the water through tides and wave action come through, they tend to capture some of the sediments that are in the water,” said Dr. Robert Moreau, Director of Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station. “Those sediments are the way that the coast and the wetlands historically have been built in the process called accretion. The sediments build on top of each other until there is some sort of higher ground there with grass growing through it. The Christmas trees accentuate the natural building of wetlands.”

For this year’s research project, Turtle Cove is seeing if the Christmas trees can help with the logging ditches created by the logging industry years ago.

“The ditches were created by the logger, pulled the trees out one behind the other to bring them onto the barge,” said Moreau. “So, you are left with these

big, deep ditches that are crisscrossed in the landscape. Those logging ditches are still left behind from the 1800’s and have never been filled in with sediment. We are hoping that the Christmas trees can help those ditches fill in.”

Turtle Cove presents community service opportunities for students and community members to be involved in helping the coastline and other parts of the environment.

“Sometimes we will get volunteers to actually bring the Christmas trees to the marshlands,” said Moreau. “We have to have volunteers help us drag them all the way down to the boardwalk and to where we put them into the ditches.”

The volunteers that assist in the placing of trees are normally a part of Moreau’s Environmental Awareness class or biology classes he teaches here on campus.

For a monetary donation to help this project be successful, checks can be made payable to Friends of Turtle Cove and mailed to the university at Box 10585 Hammond, LA, 70402. It can also be made by credit card by visiting the Turtle Cove website under the Friends and Donors link.

Turtle Cove has been accepting trees since Dec. 26, 2016 and will continue

until Mardi Gras from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Hammond Maintenance Facility. The Southeastern Sustainability Center on 2101 North Oak Street has begun collecting trees on Jan. 5 and will continue through the end of the month on Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Fridays 8 to 10 a.m.

DETECTIVE DE NOUX RETIRES TO WRITE

By Annie Goodman - Staff Reporter After 10 years working for the University Police Department, O’Neil De Noux, who has been in law enforcement since 1968, decided it is time to retire.

“Well, I’m old,” said De Noux, a police investigator. “This is a young man’s game. I’ve been at this since 1968. I became a police cadet, and I’ve been in and out of law enforcement my whole life. It’s a young person’s game, and it’s time for me to move on.”

Now that he is retiring, De Noux plans to focus on his writing.

“I’ve got three books coming out next year, and I intend to promote them,” said De Noux. “I’m in the middle of writing another one, and I’ll just keep writing and promoting my books. Those are the plans.”

De Noux has authored multiple books throughout the years.

“I’ve had 33 books published,” said De Noux. “I’m an author, and I’m gonna concentrate on my writing.”

De Noux has wanted to be a writer since he was young.

“When I was in high school, I wanted to write,” said De Noux. “I always knew that I was gonna be a writer. I thought maybe I’d write a book, hopefully I’d write a novel someday. I just stuck with it. I wrote a lot of bad short stories and actually learned my craft. When I became a homicide detective, I realized this is what I need to write about. My first novel was a homicide novel, and I never looked back. I just keep writing and trying to get better.”

De Noux is an accomplished writer having won multiple awards throughout his career including the 2011 Police Book of the Year for “John Raven Beau,” the Shamus Award for Best Short Story in 2007 for “The Heart Has Reasons” and the Derringer Award for Best Novelette in 2009 for “Too Wise,” but he feels his weakness is in his versatility as a writer.

“Not only do I write crime fiction, I have three historical novels published,” said De Noux. “I’ve written science fiction.

I’ve written fantasy. I’ve written erotica, a lot of erotica.

Especially in the men’s magazines. It’s a good way to make quick money as a writer. I have different genres. It’s probably my weakest link because I’m not just one kind of writer. People don’t say ‘Okay he always writes crime fiction, let’s go to him for that.’ I also write other stuff, and they may not like that.”

De Noux is also an accomplished police officer.

“Well, I was the police officer of the year in 2012, and I’ve received the Chiefs Award of Merit which is the highest decoration the department gets,” said De Noux.

At UPD, De Noux has found that they often help more than they harm.

“My favorite part of working here is the fact that we help a lot of kids because we do more educating than incarcerating,” said De Noux. “We have a lot of kids that make mistakes. We try to help them. We do a lot of counseling, and I like that part.”

NEW YEAR, NEW PERFORMANCES

By London Taylor - Staff Reporter The Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts will be presenting a mixture of classical and modern performances which include Silver Screen movies, plays and music performances for the spring semester of the new year.

The award winning Aeolus String Quartet will start the theatre’s new year off with their upcoming performance on Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m. Executive Director Roy Blackwood feels that the performance from the Aeolus String Quartet is a great way to start the new year.

“It’s a really superb group that will be coming,” said Blackwood. “They are

a fabulous classical string quartet.”

The quartet was created in 2008 and is composed of violinists Nicholas Tavani and Rachel Shapiro, cellist Alan Richardson and violist Gregory Luce. They have performed in areas across the globe such as North America, Europe and Asia. The quartet is the recipient of the Chamber Music America’s 2015 Guarneri String Quartet Residency Partnership Grant of the 2015-2016 season.

ALUMNA SERVES AS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF WLVD

By Larshell Green - A&E Editor Local women, including some with connections to the university, initially came together for one common goal: to entertain audiences through music, live theatre, song and acrobatics in the form of classic New Orleans burlesque shows.

The current active members of The Wicked Little Voodoo Dolls are Crystal Schayot as Crystal Kiss, Felicity Prosperie as Violet Haze, Madeline Pourciau as Moonlight Mist, Scarlett Strauch as Ruby Spell, Ashley Lewis as Maizy Mae, Christa Sevin as Indigo Dream, Courtney Turgeon and Dionne Bates.

“Any other members of the original formation of the group have either moved out of state or have pursued other goals and aspirations,” said Schayot. “All members of the group are variously talented artists who have previously and are currently pursuing multiple endeavors.”

Schayot described The Wicked Little Voodoo Dolls as classy and sassy. Each show has a different theme with different music and is performed over the course of a month at different venues.

Each performer has at least one solo during the performance.

“Our shows incorporate a wide range of dance styles and variety acts,” said Schayot. “I love using everyone’s diverse talents and incorporating them into what we do. The shows are mainly dancebased, but other types of acts are incorporated and welcomed. For the dancing, I

try to include as many styles as I can including jazz, theatre jazz, contemporary, tap, ballet, pointe and hip-hop.

For the other acts, we have incorporated acrobatics and singing, but I am very open to other possible variety acts.”

Schayot is the artistic director, lead choreographer and performer for The Wicked Little Voodoo Dolls.

She is a 2013 alumni of the university and has graduated with a bachelor’s degree in performing arts, as well as concentrations in dance and theatre. She has been a member of the group since March 2015 when it was created.

“I am a lifelong dancer and artist,” said Schayot. “Dance is and has always been my main focus and passion, and this group is one more way for me to express that to anyone willing to watch. I am inspired by so many things that sometimes it’s hard to keep track of it all, but it’s a good problem to have.”

Senior general studies major Prosperie will be returning to the university to finish her last semester. She is a dancer and singer and has been with the group since it’s beginning stages.

“In general, I was excited to perform with singing, dancing and acting which are all loves of mine,” said Prosperie.

Prosperie admits that some of the goals of the group were to expand the French Quarter culture of New Orleans while incorporating burlesque.

“I’m a performer at heart,” said Prosperie. “So for Crystal to bring the idea to me to create a group with the intentions of putting together a classy but entertaining show with a New

Pourciau is a senior theatre major at Louisiana State University. She joined The Wicked Little Voodoo Dolls in September 2016.

While searching for a job on Craigslist, Pourciau saw an audition filler and was immediately drawn to the idea of a variety group.

“I had never seen anything like that before and was really driven to become a part of it,” said Pourciau. “It’s not often I find jobs in my field that I’m one hundred percent excited about, but WLVD was different. I knew I needed to do my best to join the group, or I’d be kicking myself for

letting the opportunity pass me by.”

Lewis, a university alumni of 2011 and former university dance professor, earned a bachelor’s degree in business management and later returned to study as a graduate student.

She joined The Wicked Little Voodoo Dolls in October 2016 as a dancer.

When choosing a name for the group, Schayot and the rest of the members wanted to choose a name that would be relevant to her hometown of New Orleans have uniqueness and be recognizable.

“I have always been intrigued by any and all things related to our city and culture,

The Lion’s Roar | 9 including voodoo,” said Schayot. “Thanks to all the research, it was also helpful in the process of choosing stage names, music and even costumes. The pins that are used on a voodoo doll to represent different things, such as love or good fortune, are the core of how we base our performance details.”

The Wicked Little Voodoo Dolls typically perform in venues such as dance halls, auditoriums, bars and clubs. From time to time, the group switches up the places in which they perform at.

“Non-typical events and venues we would be able to perform at may include anything from a convention, to a parade, to a party, a wedding, an outdoor show/concert and the list can keep going,” said Schayot. “We performed for Hammond Horror Fest this year, and we’re looking to do a few other things now such as marching in some of the Mardi Gras parades, maybe even perform at a Mardi Gras Ball, and there’s even some talk about performing at the New Orleans Comic Con next year.”

The group’s first show at Hammond Horror Fest has held a special place in the heart of Pourciau. The challenging bits, introduction to other artists and bond with her fellow members of the group solidified the new journey the women were beginning.

“I felt like we became family on that night,” said Pourciau. “I want the audience to feel inspired, to feel that they too can find their outlet and share their creativity with others. It’s a magical thing when art brings people together.”

Like Pourciau, Lewis also enjoyed performing at Hammond Horror Fest and she stated that recognizing the benefits of working, as a team has been her most valuable lesson as a member.

“We each have different talents from singing, dancing and even creating art,” said Lewis. “We are all simply artists.

Everything you see we create ourselves from the merchandise to even our own dance costumes.”

Prosperie believes that the diversity of the members is the most unique quality of The Wicked Little Voodoo Dolls. She also believes that having a live singer as a part of a burlesque show is a unique addition to performances by creating a vintage New Orleans live show.

“We have different girls from different backgrounds with different abilities coming together as one to entertain our audience,” said Prosperie.

The most valuable lesson learned for Prosperie through being

a member of The Wicked Little Voodoo Dolls is to do what she loves which is performing. She enjoys getting feedback from the audience after performances.

“Performing in our group feeds my soul in the sense that I am doing purely what I enjoy, entertaining,” said Prosperie. “No matter what problems may arise, or what obstacles I have to go through, at the end of the day, it’s all worth it because I’m a part of something that is bringing joy to others.”

Pourciau has also learned the art of dedication since joining The Wicked Little Voodoo Dolls despite not having a dance background.

“Crystal has helped me to grow in ways I never thought possible,” said Pourciau. “I’m really happy with the progress we’ve made and am so grateful for her time and patience.”

Pourciau has since seen changes in her work ethic and personal life.

According to Schayot, The Wicked Little Voodoo Dolls are always taking applications and conducting auditions.

Interviews and auditions can be held in a variety of ways.

“The first option is to meet with me in person to show your talent and continue with a brief casual interview,” said Schayot. “The other option is to email your audition to WLVDproductions@yahoo. com with your full name, contact info, photos, headshot and full body, and two shorter 30 to 45 second videos to show your talents.”

Although Schayot keeps an open mind when searching for new members, the most important qualities that she considers are personality and attitude. Having positivity and eagerness are imperative to being a part of The Wicked Little Voodoo Dolls.

“I love being able to incorporate everyone’s versatile talents into the shows when I can,” said Schayot.

“Being technically trained is helpful, but not always necessary. If you are willing to work hard, I’m willing to help you get to where you want to be. As a teacher, that is my job and I love it.”

The Wicked Little Voodoo Dolls can be seen at Cate Street Pub in Hammond on Tuesday, Jan. 31 to perform their “Twisted Ritz Glamour & Glitz” show, which will include tunes of musical theatre.

Although women with multiple backgrounds and personalities joined together for the purpose of performing and entertaining audiences, it is their hard work and dedication to their craft that bonds them together.

“I love being able to choreograph and perform and just do what I love to do,” said Schayot. “The fact that the other members of the group can come together to do the exact same thing makes it absolutely worth all of the time and energy we put into everything. We would not take the time to make and embellish our own costumes and props and merchandise and choreograph our dances and practice and everything else that goes along with being a performance artist if we didn’t absolutely love it.”

“I’m hopeful they understand the quality of the performances and the inexpensive value of the price,” said Blackwood.

The Aquila Theatre has planned to put world literature mystery writer Agatha Christie’s famous novel “Death On The Nile” to action on the stage of the Columbia with the performance of “Murder on the Nile” on Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. The setting is in the 1940s on a paddle steamer sailing along the Nile River of Egypt.

The Aquila Theatre is a returning guest to the Columbia Theatre after showing their version of “Sherlock Holmes” last year.

Though the role of Sherlock was played by a female, Blackwood’s attention was caught and he enjoyed it.

“She played beautifully,” said Blackwood. “It was brilliantly done in last March and the February show is going to be wonderful.”

Artistic Director Laurie Eisenhower has an acclaimed work of the Eisenhower Dance that has given life to her reputation of her works for the last 25 years. Eisenhower established the dance in Detroit in the year 1991. She has produced several full-evening productions. Annual subscription series and tours are presented by the company internationally.

The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra’s Beethoven and Blue Jeans New World Symphony series in Metairie, Hammond and Slidell ends with a concert of selections from Ludwig van

Beethoven, Antonín Dvořák and Johannes Brahms led by guest conductor Robin Fountain. The orchestra will be performing on Mar. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Columbia Theatre. Beethoven’s “Leonore Overture No. 3” starts the program off followed by Brahms’ rousing “Hungarian Dance No. 1” and “Hungarian Dance No. 5.” The concert concludes with Dvořák’s “From the New World,” a piece combined with melodies inspired by African American spirituals and Native American music. There will be master classes for students in which wind symphony and choir are available at no cost.

The Greek storyteller Aesop’s famous tale will come to the Columbia Theatre. The Virginia Repertory Theatre will present a musical version of the retold musical of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” on Apr. 29 at 7 p.m. Similar to the classic theme of the tale, the boy learns about being truthful and that there are consequences for lying. Kids dressed in their pajamas will be given milk and cookies at the end.

This year’s Silver Screen movies are two classic foreign films with high ratings. Blackwood anticipates these movies will attract audience members who view film as an art.

“These will be wonderful films,” said Blackwood. “These are films you can’t see other places unless they travel to film festivals.”

“When Elephants Were Young” is an English and Thai foreign documentary with subtitles that was shown at the theatre on Jan. 9 and 10 about a young male street beggar and his young elephant in Bangkok. The elephant business threatens their well-being until there is an opportunity to release the elephant in the wild.

From the producers of the Academy Award nominated “Persepolis” and graphic novelist Jacques Tardi comes a sci-fi adventure set in Paris 1941. “April and the Extraordinary World” is a foreign animation film that hits the Columbia Theatre Jan. 30 and 31 at 7:30 p.m. A family of scientists is close to discovering a powerful serum when suddenly a mysterious force abducts them leaving their young daughter April behind. She goes to find her parents and investigate their disappearance.

The search began mid-season last year as the Interim Head Coach Matt Muia finished up the last part of the season for the team. McBride was officially named the fourth head coach on Nov. 28, 2016 by Director of Athletics Jay Artigues after he applied for the job.

“We’re really excited about our new hire,” said Artigues.

“Coach McBride brings a sense of energy and enthusiasm and a wealth of knowledge. I can’t wait for him to get started with our young ladies.”

Originally from Prestwick, Scotland, McBride played soccer until he was 18 and currently holds a Scottish Youth Football Association level “E” and “D” license, Level one, Level two and Level three licenses in goalkeeping from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as well as an NSCAA National Diploma. He came to the United States to attend Martin Methodist College. He was team captain twice in his four-year career and helped the RedHawks win one TranSouth Athletic Conference regular season championship, one league tournament title and helped them advance to the 2009 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Tournament quarterfinals. During his time at Martin Methodist College, he was named TranSouth Scholar athlete three times.

As a senior, McBride was named an Academic All-American, was given the Tom Read Academic Award for highest grade point average of any male student athlete and was awarded the Royce Hughes Physical Education Non-Licensure Award.

After he graduated from Martin Methodist with his bachelor’s in physical education and minor in biology, he went on to receive his master’s from the University of North

Alabama in health and human performance. He served as an assistant coach for North Alabama for four years where he and the UNA goalkeepers recorded eight shutouts and averaged 0.75 goals in 2015.

He moved from the University of North Alabama to the University of South Alabama where he was assistant coach for the Jaguars for one season. During his time there, they won their fourth Sun Belt Conference title and exited the season with a 7-3 conference mark. South Alabama University went on to the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament where they lost to Auburn and finished the season at 15-6-1 overall.

He also helped coach the Alabama Olympic Development Program.

McBride came to the university to serve as head coach for the first time in his career and will take over the soccer team which finished at 7-11-2 overall as they also made their 19th appearance at the Southland Conference tournament.

McBride was excited and grateful as well. He expressed his gratitude at a conference after he was hired.

“I want to thank Mr. Artigues, Sherry Kennemer and the hiring committee for giving me the opportunity to work at Southeastern Louisiana,” said McBride. “I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to work with the girls. I was fortunate enough to see the play when we played against them last spring. They’re a talented group of individuals, and I’m really looking forward to preparing for upcoming seasons.”

I know covering news seems simple, but it is a process. This process may be long and tiring, like I have said numerous times before, but I know that the other editors and staff working with me are strong enough to handle anything that is thrown our way. The university and the city of Hammond offer a number of opportunities to create new memories. Friends, family or classmates may suggest some “must-do’s” that need to be completed while in college. The Lion’s Roar staff worked on creating a small bucket list of some of the activities that the newspaper staff believes that all university students should do before graduation.

This list is not extensive and was made by people who work together but have a variety of personalities. The Lion’s Roar staff worked to create some ideas for everybody and hopes that our fellow students make memories that will last for a lifetime.

Buy Southeastern gear There’s no secret that Roomie is the life of whichever event he attends. Roomie is Southeastern’s lively lion mascot that boosts pride to his fellow lions. Attend a movie night The Campus Activities Board provides free movies to students at least once a month during the semester. What makes these movie nights special is that you can watch them with of your friends and bring as many snacks as you want to the Student Union Theater.

We are sure you have heard about the dreaded “freshman 15.” Well, it is absolutely avoidable. Most people don’t like to run or jog. How about a nice bike ride around campus? Campus is very peaceful in the afternoon around 5 p.m. If you have a bike, put it in your car, drive to campus and enjoy a bike ride. South campus is around two miles. That is a good exercise for everyone just three days a week. If you don’t have a bike, you could walk or jog and even rollerblade. Although they are closed for the remodeling of their building, they will soon open back up for all of Hammond to enjoy again. Lee’s has been a part of Hammond since 1996.

Go to a gallery opening

Form a study group We know that study groups don’t always work and can seem like a waste of time depending on who your classmates are. But, it can also be a great way to make friends and prepare for a test. It’s also a good chance for you to use any leadership skills you may have.

Probably the best time to do a study group is before finals week since everybody will be nervous. You never know when you can help out a fellow student or if another student can help you.

From the Contemporary Art Gallery on the university’s campus, to the heart of Downtown Hammond’s gallery, the Hammond Regional Arts Center, there are plenty of opportunities to witness a diverse abundance of art. Most galleries host events monthly to attract patrons. Patrons get a chance to speak to the creators of the art, gallery directors and fellow art lovers at most events. Not every gallery displays art on the traditional pedestal and white wall. The Hammond Regional Arts Center displays art from artists such as a local blacksmith, pottery makers, jewelry makers, painters and chefs during their annual Brews Arts Festival. Live away from home The best part about college is finding out who you are as a person. Part of this is living on your own and having to do things for yourself without your parents influencing your decisions. You learn whether or not that second piece of cake really is worth it, and if you’d be willing to squash the spider on your own. Granted, these are big decisions, but smaller ones like deciding your true career path based on your classes, whether or not you are a Coke or Pepsi fan and if you want to stay in state or not, are all on your shoulders alone.

THE MAKINGS OF A HISTORIC RIVALRY

By Jonathan Rhodes - Staff Reporter The rivalry between the Lions football team and Nicholls State University Colonels has been going on since the Colonels football program started in 1972. This rivalry is settled in the last game of every season in the River Bell Classic which the Lions won this past season 44-42.

The Classic started after the end of the Cypress Mug series that was played against Southwestern Louisiana which is now University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity helped to establish the River Bell Classic.

“The Cypress Mug Series had been our main rivalry series and left SLU without a real rival to compete against,” said Sigma Tau Gamma alumni Cameron Barr. “In that same year, Nicholls started its football program, and we put them on our schedule.

In a meeting with a committee, then called the Alumni Advisory Committee, the desire was

expressed to establish another rivalry series with Nicholls. As a member of that committee, I volunteered that the alumni of Sigma Tau Gamma would come up with a name and trophy for the series.”

The name of the trophy was specifically chosen to represent both schools accurately.

“The fact that the schools are separated by the Mississippi River is the inspiration for the ‘River’ in the name,” said Barr. “So, several Sigma Tau Gamma alumni got together and suggested the name of the trophy for the game to be the River Bell Trophy.”

Sigma Tau Gamma takes the responsibility in sponsoring the trophy and keeping the trophy in good shape.

“Sigma Tau Gamma alumni make the trophy available through a permanent loan of the trophy to Southeastern,” said Barr. “Sigma Tau Gamma Alumni are obligated for the maintenance of the trophy and, in fact, have set up a fund in the Southeastern Foundation to

make sure that these obligations are met.”

The River Bell Classic trophy design has only changed one time. Because the athletes get to celebrate with the trophy after the game, it takes a lot of abuse. The original trophy is in the Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame in the University Center while a new trophy has been in use the past five years.

“The original trophy was in use from 1972 until the 2011 game,” said Barr. “The original trophy was constructed

The classic went on a 20year hiatus due to the Lions football program being inactive for 18 seasons.

“Nicholls won the last game before our football program was suspended, so they held the trophy until the rivalry started again,” said Barr.

The series between the Lions and the Colonels has been evenly competitive.

For the 2017 baseball season, the Lions have set up a five step plan hoping it leads the team to victory.

“We have the same goals set for every year,” said Head Coach Matt Riser. “It’s a five step process. It begins with winning the regular season championship, then the

conference tournament, next the regional and super regional to our ultimate goal of winning a national championship.”

Riser believes this year will be more challenging due to more traveling and possibly the toughest schedule the team has had in over ten years.

“We play an extremely challenging schedule and will spend a lot of time on the road especially early,” said Riser.

“I didn’t do us any favors with this year’s schedule. It is our toughest schedule in my ten

years here. Good or bad, we must be able to handle the early season maturely. We must continue to remind ourselves that championships are won in May and June.”

Returning junior pitcher Mac Sceroler has a positive outlook for the team this season.

“I have high expectations for this team,” said Sceroler.

“We have a good group of guys along with veteran leadership.

We have a good non-conference schedule that will test us early and see what we’re made of and will boost our RPI. Being that we lost three of our starting pitchers, along with a couple batters, including the nation’s leading hitter, we are looking for guys to step up and play a huge role for us. I feel as if we have the right group of guys for that.”

The new turf has a powerful positive affect on the team’s defense.

“The new field will help improve our defense and allow us to be more aggressive with base running,” said Riser.

The team is grateful for all the contributions to the team including the new field.

“The new turf is awesome,” said Sceroler. “I think it came out really great. Anytime we see improvements to our program, it makes us proud. It makes us want to work harder and keep winning.”

The Lions plan to go into the season with a positive attitude and the will to strive towards the national championship with the intentions of topping last season.

“Every year we play, we’re trying to do one thing and that’s win a national championship,” said Riser. “Obviously, we didn’t do that last year, so there is a lot of room to improve.

We’ve been to the regional twice in the last three years, and it would be really nice to finally win one.”

Riser is excited about this season, and he believes that this season’s roster is full of the most talented young men he has ever coached.

“I’m extremely excited about this year’s group of seniors,” said Riser. “They are one of the toughest group of young men I’ve had the fortune to coach.”

THEATRE PROGRAM TO PARTICIPATE AT KCACTF

By Regina Pergola - Staff Reporter Unlike previous years, the theatre program will not be competing in The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival this year.

However, students have been selected for related awards and nominated for scholarships that will be presented at the KCACTF. Students will still be attending the festival this year despite the university not having a production competing.

“This year we entered our production of ‘Distracted’ by Lisa Loomer into the regional festival,” said James Winter, associate professor of acting and directing. “This meant that two respondents from KCACTF came to Hammond to see our production. They also chose to hold our production as a finalist for the regional festival. Unfortunately, when the regional committee met to review the finalists, they chose not to invite our production.

Nevertheless, as with our production of ‘High and Mighty’ last year, our students will still travel to the regional festival to compete in the

Irene Ryan competition and to present their design work.”

The Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship is an opportunity for students to win financial aid and recognition. 16 regional winners and two national winners are selected to obtain various amounts of financial support. “Distracted” actors Colin Ross, Misty Gros and Payton Core were nominated by KCACTF representatives to be in the regional Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship.

“All competing students have the chance to win scholarships and fellowships at the regional festival,” said Winter. “They also have a chance at being invited to perform/ present their work at the national festival at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. later this spring.”

In addition, other students were given recognition for their work in the “Distracted” production. Rebecca Miller won a costume design award, Grace Jovanovic won a video & projection design award and Madison Paulus won a stage management award.

Productions entered into the festival’s competitions are school run and do not include individuals’ work.

“Students can’t just be in the festival of their own accord,” said Winter. “The university has to pay to enter a show or multiple shows into the festival each year.

Only the students involved in the entered productions are eligible to participate.”

In previous years, the university has competed and won awards through the theater festival.

“We’ve taken full productions to the regional festival twice since 2005,” said Winter. ‘“Parking Lot Babies,’ which went to the festival in 2010, won seven national commendations for excellence and our student playwright, Zachary Boudreaux, won a fellowship to study playwriting at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.” Even without the university competing in it, students can benefit from experiences they receive at KCACTF. “It gives college students around the

country a chance to network with peers and faculty from other institutions as well as with professionals in the field,” said Winter.

“KCACTF also annually awards hundreds of scholarships, internships and fellowships to theatre students. The faculty and professionals involved in KCACTF provide valuable feedback and criticism to the students and their work.”

Students and other festival goers can receive benefits such as insight and clarity.

“For us, it really helps to give our students a broader perspective,” said Winter. “Our students can get stuck only seeing or participating in the shows here at Southeastern and only getting feedback and training from a select few individuals here at the school. KCACTF opens up the world of regional, collegiate and professional theatre to our students.”

HARLAN MILLER STARTS IN NFL

By Jonathan Rhodes - Staff Reporter In the final two weeks of the National Football League season, the Arizona Cardinals named former Lion defensive back Harlan Miller as a starter.

This placed Miller along with Atlanta Falcons defensive back Robert Alford as the second player from the university to be a starter in the NFL. “It’s outstanding and an absolute thrill for him and what

he has been able to accomplish,” said Head football Coach Ron Roberts. “Him getting that opportunity to start in the National Football League is unbelievable. I’m excited for him. And, what it does is, it shows off our program and what we are able to accomplish.”

Miller was drafted by the Cardinals 205th overall in the sixth round. He was dropped by the Cardinals in September to the practice squad where he waited to be called up to the main roster.

Miller made a good impression in his second start getting four tackles and recording his first interception of his career.

Miller is fourth all time in interceptions for the Lions and was named first team AllSouthland Conference for three straight seasons.

The Lions football team considers winning the classic not only an honor but also a reflection of how well the program is doing.

“When you win the in-state rivalries, it is always huge for your program,” said Head football Coach Ron Roberts.

“It’s huge for recruiting as well.

It was a great win on the road especially the fashion in which it was done in. It was a great football game and it has turned out to be an outstanding rivalry.”

FACULTY, STUDENTS’ ART SHOWCASED AT SPRING EXHIBITIONS

By Tiffany Nesbit - Staff Reporter The spring semester will have numerous opportunities for students, faculty and guests to enjoy new artwork in the campus gallery. The Contemporary Art Gallery will host five exhibitions during this semester. Two exhibitions will welcome art students to enter their own work.

The first exhibition is the “Faculty Exhibition” held from Jan. 19 to Feb. 10. The opening reception will be held on Jan. 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. All artwork must be collected from faculty members wanting to participate by Jan. 9.

The “Faculty Exhibition” is always the first show of the spring semester and always opens on a Thursday evening. The mediums shown will include drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, pottery, digital media, etc.

According to Dale Newkirk, professor and director of Fine and Performing Arts, this exhibition is an opportunity for art students to see their teachers as actual living artists and see what their work looks like outside of the classroom.

“New faculty brings new faculty work every semester,” said Newkirk. “So, it is a chance to see different living artists as well.”

The second exhibition is titled “Bill Evans in Context.” It will be held Feb. 15 to 18 in conjunction with the Bill Evans Jazz Festival. Bill Evans is an American jazz artist who studied at the university during his early career for music and graduated here in 1950. This exhibition is to remember his success here at the university and gives the students a chance to learn about a

great artist and his success.

The third exhibition is the “Juried Visual Arts and Design Student Exhibition.” It will be held from Feb. 23 to Mar. 14 with the opening reception being on Feb. 23 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. All artwork from students is due at the gallery by Feb. 1.

The “Student Exhibition” gives art students a taste of off campus art galleries. It prepares them for the art scene outside of college. Students must have professional looking work to display and follow the set of guidelines given by the gallery.

The fourth exhibition will be the “Sixth Annual University Louisiana System Academic Summit Exhibition” held Mar. 23 to Mar. 31 with the opening reception on Mar. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. The ULS Academic Summit will be on Mar. 30 to 31 and the deadline for digital entries will be Feb. 21. The ULS supports nine schools including Southeastern. The exhibition will take four artists from each of the schools and put them on display.

The last exhibition is the “Visual Art and Design Senior Exhibition,” which will be held Apr. 13 to May 13. All work is due exhibition ready by Apr. 3 at the gallery. Senior Reviews will take place Mar. 8 and 9. “The Senior Exhibition” puts graduating senior artists on display for the last time as a student.

The gallery is free for all guests and students to attend along with free light refreshments.

“The Contemporary Art Gallery is open free to all students,” said Newkirk. “It is sponsored by all university students through their tuition. All are welcomed and encouraged to join in on the events. The gallery is located on campus by East Stadium and next to Clark Hall.”

The Contemporary Art Gallery has prepared a spring season full of events that will include drawings, paintings, sculptures, mixed media and pottery from a variety of artists. NOW MANAGE YOUR ID WITH NEW GET APP

By Annie Goodman - Staff Reporter The university has switched from ManageMyID to GET for its increased amount of functions in comparison.

“It provides additional functionality such as being able to view Cub Cash transactions, not just Lion’s Lagniappe, report both lost and found IDs, identify all merchants that accept Lion’s Lagniappe and also provides a free app for both iPhone and Android users,” said Robin Parker, Director of Marketing and Strategic Initiatives for Auxiliary Services. “It also allows users to login with their Southeastern login information.”

To add funds to your account, login to GET using your WNumber and password at get.cbord.com/southeastern/full/login. php, click the “ADD FUNDS” button, use drop down to select Deposit Amount, enter credit card information, you may also save your credit card information on file, click “Continue” and click “Add Funds.”

The university switched to GET because ManageMyID was no longer going to be available.

“The previous online account management system, ManageMyID, was no longer supported by CBORD, the company that the Campus Card Operations office works with for online account management offerings,” said Parker. “GET replaced ManageMyID with new features and functionalities.”

Guests can deposit into student accounts as well. To make a guest deposit access the Guest Deposit page, deposit enter the University ID Number of the person for whom you are making a guest deposit, click “Continue,” the student’s name will be displayed for identification, use drop down to select Deposit Amount, enter credit card information and email address, click “Continue,” and to complete the deposit click “Continue” again. The funds will be placed in the account and ready to use.

GET is a more convenient management

system for students than ManageMyID was.

“GET provides students with a convenient way to manage their Lagniappe account, add funds at any time, allow guest users to make Lagniappe deposits, check balances and find out where Lion’s Lagniappe is accepted on and off campus, check Cub Cash balances and report lost or found Southeastern IDs,” said Parker.

“Students can also access GET through a free, user-friendly app, GET Mobile for iPhone and Android users, that makes for an even quicker, more convenient experience.”

GET also has a mobile app for students.

To download and install the app, open the App Store, for iPhone users, or Google Play Store, for Android users, search for GET Mobile, download the free app, select Southeastern Louisiana University login using your WNumber and password then create and verify a 4-digit PIN number.

ROBERTS RECEIVES CONTRACT EXTENSION

By Jonathan Rhodes - Staff Reporter The university has signed Head football Coach Ron Roberts through the 2018 season. The Director of Athletics, Jay Artigues made the announcement on Dec. 16, 2016.

“I’m very excited about that,” said Roberts. “I want to thank the athletic director and the president for giving me the commitment to our football program and the things that we are doing from here on.”

Roberts has been the head coach of the Lions for the past five years. He has a 36-

24 overall record and a 29-11 record against the Southland Conference. Roberts has won two consecutive Southland Conference championships in 2013 and 2014 and led the program to its first two Football Championship Subdivision playoff appearances.

After starting last season 1-3, Roberts led the Lions to winning six of the last seven games to finish 7-4 overall and 7-2 in conference play.

“Our objective every year is to get in the playoffs and win conference championships,” said Roberts. “We got to get back to that. I am looking forward to the opportunity to hopefully winning a conference championship in 2017.”

Under Roberts, eight different Lions have won All-America honors and two players, Robert Alford and

Harlan Miller, have made it to the National Football League.

Roberts also swept in-state competition this past season for the fourth time in five years giving him a 13-2 overall record against in-state rivals.

The Lions will start spring practice on Mar. 7 and have already begun to prepare for next season.

“As soon as the players come back, we start on our offseason weight program,” said Roberts. “We start spring ball in March and try to find those guys who will step up and fill in those spots vacated by our seniors. We are right in the thick of recruiting right now.

December and January are our days to recruit, but what we are looking forward to right now, is our big National Sign Day on Feb. 1. That is our next opportunity to get a huge win.”
