Ugly sweaters? On December 11th a contingency at Big River Running-South City sporting sweaters with designs ranging from reindeer, to Santa Claus, to “Candy Cane Addict,” to begin a group run, part of ‘The Ugly Sweater Contest.” Do we ever purposely dress to look ugly, or to be debonair, or do we just throw on whatever keeps us warm, or cool?

Bryan Cave Employees Take the Lead at the Marathon Relay “It has gotten to be a tradition,” said Ben Clark of Bryan Cave LLC Law Firm.

This year Bryan Cave LLC sent nine teams, representing the 336 lawyers at its St. Louis headquarters, to The Marathon Relay. Team “Bryan Cave One-The Young and the Restive,” took first place among all teams overall, with a 2:25:15 time.

“Bryan Cave Four” finished second among the Bryan Cave teams, placing second in the mixed open category, with a time of 3:01:35. Grey corporate hats, worn by a diversity of runners, dotted Forest Park the crisp Sunday morning, November 19th. A heated tent on the edge of the Lower Muny Parking lot offered team members warmth, camaraderie, and refreshments.

Although they had “run together,” new Board Member Matt Coriell, and active member Mark Spewak met face-to-face for the first time December 18th, at the board meeting. Matt and Mark had been using the Strava app during their training runs for several weeks.

“I think it’s a blast,” Matt said. “It’s a lot of fun,” Mark said.

“If you're active, Strava was made for you,” reads the website (www.strava.com) .

Strava turns every iPhone and Android into a sophisticated running and cycling computer, and we work with your GPS watches and head units, too. We're the social network for those who strive. You can share your location in real time with your friend, partner, parent, coach, butler, therapist, highly intelligent dog - anyone cool enough to have your back in an emergency.” “ The way you ‘post’ in this network is by being active. Strava works with your mobile phone or favorite GPS device to track your activities, and share your efforts with friends. Get better by analysis. Recording an activity is easy—open, tap, go.

When your workout is over, almost every metric you can imagine awaits you—from basics like speed, pace, and distance to Strava exclusives, your performance compared to past attempts, to Suffer Score.”

Strava works with a variety of sports, including cycling, swimming skiing, kiteboarding, crossfit, kayaking, inline skating, rock climbing, surfing, and yoga. The desktop version offers route planning and training plans. Both Matt and Mark likened Strava to Facebook, saying Strava was open to all, and can link people together.

New Saint Louis Track Club Board Member Matt Coriell exemplifies the benefits of adopting an active lifestyle. He shed 55 pounds during the last two years, has stopped smoking, feels less stressed, and has made new friends. Although he ran when younger, he resumed two years ago when dealing with stress from his 3year-old daughter’s diagnosis of Wilms’ tumor, an aggressive form of kidney cancer. His daughter, “Dottie,” has undergone surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, and has been declared cancer-free. She imitates Matt in his exercising, and Matt encourages her. Dottie has two brothers, Dakota, 13, and Colton, 2.

A bricklayer by trade, Matt is very active in two fraternal organizations. Within these groups, he has served on committees to enhance and retain members. He manages a community outreach program which provides backpacks of food to children, and is the administrator of a scholarship program.

Matt first became acquainted with the Saint Louis Track Club at The Corps of Discovery” trail run. He felt that it was very “down home,” and that the track club inspired a feeling of community. Matt’s favorite runs are the trail runs, but he varies his courses during his three to five-mile runs during the week, and during his long runs on Sundays. He would like to promote the feeling of “community” of the track club as a board member. He cites the feeling of community as a major element in his development as a runner.

Big River Running Company announced its new charitable giving program, Big River Gives Back,” December 14th. As part of the program, Big River will donate 10% of sales of all Big River branded merchandise to charities in St. Louis. St. Vincent Home for Children in North County was the first charity partner. In the spirit of the holidays and to kick off the Big River Gives Back program, Big River Running presented the Executive Director and Development Director of St. Vincent with 30 pair of shoes and socks for the teens in St. Vincent's residential treatment program.

Twenty-eighteen---are those sounds of the mileages of marathon training runs, or just the sounds of the name of the New Year? Twenty-eighteen brings two more events of The Frostbite Series this Winter, (the tail end?) and the pickup of The Frostbite Series in December (the head?) There are days in-between-- the body of the year, which include The Pace Series, The Marathon Training Program, The Half-Marathon, social runs, open meetings, the Volunteer Appreciation Picnic, and much in development.

Let 2018 embody many healthy, safe running and walking days. Whether using Strava, wearing ugly running shirts, learning to live a healthy lifestyle, “giving back” through any kinds of means, or forming a relay team, The Saint Louis Track Club wishes you the BEST.
