XC kickoff opens fall racing season Open meeting this Monday!

The quarterly open board meeting will be held on Monday, September 15 at Schlafly Bottleworks.

The group run will start promptly at 6 p.m., with 5- and 3-mile options.

The club social and business meeting will follow in the crown room.

The highlight of the meeting will be a preview of the newly redesigned SLTC website launching soon. You don’t want to miss the sneak peak of the great new features.

The event is open to all members, and each participant will receive one free beer!

President’s Column

Great events kicking off this fall!

St. Louis Track Club Members, Greetings! SLTC just wrapped up its second annual Corps of Discovery Trail Race on Sunday, Sept.

7. With fall here, the weather could not have been better for race day! Congratulations to our winners and all runners for completing a challenging course! We look forward to having our winners come back to defend their title next year. Special thanks go out to Race Director Mike Orrico, Jen Mommens, Ryan Yoch, and all the volunteers who helped make this a success. Many put in a lot of hard work to make the race a success! Additionally, we thank our sponsors for their help in making race day a great experience. I’m certain many runners appreciated the massages provided by Optimal Performance Center!

As far as the next few months, there are a lot of things going on with the SLTC. In September, we will be having our Quarterly Board meeting at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood on Monday, Sept. 15. I look forward to running with everyone and catching up with members. As for the race calendar, the St. Louis Track Club Half Marathon & 5k and the Marathon Relay are both coming up in November. Be sure to check out the website and get in some long runs with the Marathon Training group!

Jan Daker rubs elbows with Meb Keflezighi at Quad Cities BIX-7 Best of luck to Masters runner Jan Daker. Jan moved to Apple Valley, Minn., a Twin Cities suburb. She joined some Michelob Ultra runners at the BIX-7 in the Quad Cities in July, and got many chances to interact with one of her favorite runners, and winner of this year’s Boston Marathon, Meb Keflezighi.

“I told him I ran Boston, and heard he’d won when I was halfway through,” Jan said.

“I was waiting for you,” Meb replied.

“Meb brought his family, and also ran the kids’ race with one of his daughters. I loved listening to his luncheon talk, explaining how he raced the last five Boston miles; imagine the effort it takes to go out fast and stay there. Talk about setting a goal the prior year and doing the work to make it happen. What a role model for all of us,” Jan said.

Many Michelob Ultra runners made strong showings at BIX 7. Bryan Glass won the Master’s Division.

Dottie Gray meets marathon legend Joan Benoit Samuelson Another celebrity contact — SLTC’s Dottie Gray was pictured hugging Joan Benoit Samuelson at the Beach to Beacon 10k in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

Joan Benoit Samuelson, winner of the inaugural Olympic women’s marathon in 1984, is founder and director of the Beach to Beacon in her hometown.

The course begins near Crescent Beach and ends at a beacon lighthouse. Dottie, 89, who visits her daughter in Cape Elizabeth, has run the race 15 of its 17 times. She placed third in the 80 to

89 division, and also won the Johnny Kelly plaque as the oldest runner in the race. “The first gal beats me every year. She’s eighty-five,” Dottie said.

Joan promised Dottie that she would add a 90 & Over category next year.

Events in Ferguson touch community, longtime SLTC members The Saint Louis Track Club extends its best wishes to the citizenry of Ferguson, Mo. One citizen of Ferguson is longtime SLTC member Rae Mohrmann.

Rae was 2013 Volunteer of the Year, has codirected The Marathon Relay for many years, and has served on the Board of Directors.

“I hope that the destruction is behind us now, and we can focus on healing, the family and friends of Michael Brown, Ferguson as a community, and all of St. Louis, “ Rae said, “We must stay positive and move forward.”

‘Jumping Jack’ named Missouri’s official state exercise People doing “jumping jacks” may know that, as of Aug. 28, they’re doing Missouri’s official state exercise. General John Pershing, of Laclede, Mo., is credited with inventing the exercise during his training of West Point cadets before World War I. Designating the “jumping jack” as the state exercise honors General Pershing, who was promoted to the level of the second highest ranked general in the U.S. Army, as “General of Armies.” Congress awarded George Washington the same rank in 1976, but gave him higher seniority. Walking was designated as the state exercise of Maryland in 2008.

George uses a walker because of a hip problem, but maintains his intelligence and congenial personality. Post-Dispatch lists familiar names as high school ‘runners to watch’ The Saint Louis Post-Dispatch listed boys Tyler Gillam, Dorrian Gordon, Brydon Groves-Scott, Shayn Jackson, Dylan Quisenberry; and girls Maddy Brown, Tami Cardenas, Hannah Long, Sarah Nicholson, and Allison Zobrist as “(High School) Cross Country Runners to Watch” on Aug. 27. The Saint Louis Track Club wishes runners of all ages and venues a safe and happy fall season.

How can I train my brain for a race?

Q: With the fall racing season right around the corner, how do you mentally prepare for race day? - Joseph A.

Actually, the Track Club is looking for volunteers to help with the 35th Annual St. Louis Half Marathon and Clayton Police 5K on Sunday, Nov. 2. A: Great question, Joseph! Being mentally ready to run a race can be as important as being physically prepared. I try to visualize the race starting a month to few weeks out. Pick a few runs a week and try to mimic the mental state you want at the beginning, middle, and certainly finish of the race. As you start and go through an event, your brain will go in all directions.

Helping keep it in the right place will go a long way in making your race successful. Whatever the distance, the thoughts can be the same to help you finish strong.

SLTC seeking web editor!

Club news and notes 8/7/14 Board Meeting Minutes Summary •July membership: 23 new, 6 renewals, 57 individuals •Team SLTC Premier Update: The structure for the elite racing team is being finalized.

Sponsors are also being solicited. New singlets are also on the way.

•Half Marathon: Sponsorship information has been updated for 2014 and an ambassador program is now in place. Registration for the half marathon training program is also open with run training led by RunWell and strength training led by SMTC. A new logo for finisher’s medals and shirts for 2014 was also selected. Images will be posted soon.

•The Cross Country Kickoff was held on 8/2 and went smoothly. Team SLTC Premier won the men’s event, and Runnababez won the women’s.

•Work has begun on transferring data from the current website to the new one. We hope to preview the new site at the next open meeting in September.

•Corps of Discovery Trail Race will be September 7. Shirts and finisher’s medals have been selected. Volunteers will be needed. A post-race cookout has also been added to the event.

•The Pace Series and Marathon Training groups are proceeding as planned. Registration for the marathon relay and Frostbite series are both open.

•The next open board meeting will be held at Schlafly Bottleworks on Monday, Sept. 15.

A group run will be at 6 p.m., with a social and brief business meeting after.

BOARD MEMBER ELECTIONS Want to help guide the Track Club’s direction?

Then submit your profile and tell us a little about who you are and why you’d like to be included on the ballot for the board of directors election. There are several open positions; anyone interested in serving should contact the office@stlouistracklub.com or one of the current board members.

The 35th Annual St. Louis Half Marathon and Clayton Police 5K will be Sunday, Nov. 2. We need over 150 volunteers to make this event a success. Volunteering is a great way to give back to the club, meet other members and volunteers, and cheer on a friend at the race, all while supporting the Special Olympics. We need volunteers for set up on Friday, set up and packet pick up on Saturday, and packet pick up, course marshals, water station, finish line and clean up on Sunday. We are very flexible with scheduling.
