President’s Column

Put safety first during fall training

As we close out the summer, schools are back in session, and vacations are behind us. There are thoughts of fall races in the air. While planning for your training runs, be aware of your safety and that of others.

If running by yourself or with a small group, run against traffic. That way, you can see what is coming and have time to react to adversity, if need be.

The daylight hours are getting shorter and you will be harder to see in the dusk. There are numerous things you can do to improve your safety. Wear a light. There are many versions on the market, from small inexpensive ones you can wear on your waist, to head lamps that illuminate your path and make you visible to oncoming cars and bikers. Wear a reflective vest or a running top with reflective material. The St. Louis Track Club has some great looking reflective tops with an awesome reflective SLTC logo.

Run with some type of ID and your insurance card.

You never know when something unexpected may happen.

Run with others. If you are new to running or new to the area and need someone to run with, check out our partner search (http://www.stlouistrackclub. com/partner_search.htm). You can also post on our SLTC Facebook site.

Here are General Running Safety Tips from Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) •Don’t wear headphones. Use your ears to be aware of your surroundings. Your ears may help you avoid dangers your eyes may miss during evening or early morning runs.

•Run against traffic so you can observe approaching automobiles. By facing oncoming traffic, you may be able to react quicker than if it is behind you.

•Look both ways before crossing. Be sure the driver of a car acknowledges your right-of-way before crossing in front of a vehicle. Obey traffic signals.

•Carry identification or write your name, phone number, and blood type on the inside sole of your running shoe. Include any medical information.

•Always stay alert and aware of what’s going on around you. The more aware you are, the less vulnerable you are.

•Carry a cell phone or change for a phone call. Know

the locations of public phones along your regular route.

•Trust your intuition about a person or an area. Act on your intuition and avoid a person or situation if you’re unsure. If something tells you a situation is not “right,” it isn’t.

•Alter or vary your running route pattern; run in familiar areas if possible. In unfamiliar areas, such as while traveling, contact a local RRCA club or running store. Know where open businesses or stores are located in case of emergency.

•Run with a partner. Run with a dog.

•Write down or leave word of the direction of your run. Tell friends and family of your favorite running routes.

•Avoid unpopulated areas, deserted streets, and overgrown trails. Avoid unlit areas, especially at night. Run clear of parked cars or bushes.

•Ignore verbal harassment and do not verbally harass others. Use discretion in acknowledging strangers. Look directly at others and be observant, but keep your distance and keep moving.

•Wear reflective material if you must run before dawn or after dark. Avoid running on the street when it is dark.

•Practice memorizing license tags or identifying characteristics of strangers.

•Carry a noisemaker. Get training in self-defense.

•When using multi-use trails, follow the rules of the road. If you alter your direction, look over your shoulder before crossing the trail to avoid a potential collision with an oncoming cyclist or passing runner.

•Call police immediately if something happens to you or someone else, or you notice anyone out of the ordinary. It is important to report incidents immediately.

Half Marathon & 5 Mile Races!

The St Louis Track Club Corps of Discovery Trail Race will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at 8AM. The course will cover approximately 13.1 miles on the Lewis & Clark trails in the Weldon Spring Conservation Area off Hwy 94.

JUST ADDED! 5 Mile race will begin at approximately 8:20AM after the half marathon waves!

Participants will begin the race in waves of 10 that leave every two minutes. All half participants must be through the 8-mile aid station within 2.5 hours after the last wave leaves or they will be pulled from the course. The event time limit is 4 hours for the half and 2 hours for the 5 mile. There will be 7 aid stations on the course for the half and 2 for the 5 mile.

Packet pickup and parking will be available at the Department of Energy facility at 7293 Hwy 94 on race morning. Shuttles will be provided to take participants, spectators and volunteers to the trail head and back.

Shirts and post-race refreshments will be provided for all entrants. Handmade awards plus prizes from Salomon and other vendors will be presented to the top three Open and Masters male and female finishers in the half. Award certificates and prizes will be presented to the top three male and female Open and Masters finishers in the 5 mile.

Bob Bellora shares accomplishments from storied racing history Bob Bellora, 43-year veteran of the Saint Louis Track Club, recalculated the number of races during his last 2.5 of running. His most recent race, the nighttime Tiki Trot 5K on Aug.17 in Hecker, Ill., brought the number to 2,100. “(At) my most recent race… the course is lined with Tiki torches every 25 yards. I took along my sister, Kathy, and SLTC members Liz Fonseca, Caroline Van Marrelo and Joop Arends. Also in attendance was SLTC member George Pugh, who has run all seven years of Tiki runs. We all enjoyed the live music and beer afterward,” Bob said.

Describing how he had so many races, Bob commented, “Gone are the days of multiple race weekends or multi-event track meets. For example, running the 3,000 m steeplechase, 5,000 m, 10,000 m, and 4x800 m relay every time that I attended the USATF Master Nationals Track Meets. The craziest double that I tried was the ‘Run for the Rep’ in Webster Groves, where the start of the 3k and 10k were only 15 minutes apart. I entered both events.

I had two bib numbers pinned over each other, and thought that I would try to win my age group in each event. Well, I first ran the 3Km in 9:30 min and had only 5:30 min to get to the next starting line, where they were already giving instructions. Then, in the 10k, trying to run in the 34’s, at the 4-mile point in the race I realized how painful and stupid the whole idea was. I did win the age group in the 3k, but Dusty Morris beat me handily in the 10k. I decided to never try that again.”

“My longest races were 10 marathons, one 50k (31.07 miles), one 60k (37.28 miles), one 50-miler, and a 24-hour run.” Bob offered some comments about his 24-hour run.

“Two year after joining the Track Club, I tried a solo run during the SLTC’s 24-hour relay on the North County Technical School’s track, attempting a goal of 100 miles, but stopped after 16 hours with 70 miles

and a very swollen ankle. Getting ready for this run, I had run 20 miles per day for two months.”

“I also ran birthday runs, my age in miles, close to my birthday every December, from the age of 19 to the age of 45. Twice I used my 50k and 60k races with extra miles warming down as my birthday runs,” Bob said.

Bob has also competed in bicycle races, biathlons, and triathlons. At a bike 10-mile time trial race, he made 2nd place. At a 10-mile Bob Bellora finished 5th overall in criterium bike race 16:59 (5:28 average pace) at the 2nd at the St. Louis V.P. Annual Monsanto vs. McDonnell-DougFair, he took 6th place. At 14 run/bike las 5k road race April 9 1983. biathlons, he took 11 first places and one second place. He has also completed two triathlons.

Bob has been a frequent attendee at the Summer Pace Series this year.

“For as many years as I can remember, I have run and enjoyed the Spring Road Series, the Summer Pace Series, and the Winter Frostbite Series,” he said.

“It was a very cold morning,” he said. “Other runners on the McDonnell-Douglas team that I remember were Mike Bridwell, Ron Ayers , Jim McNiff (in background of the photo), Steve Irvine, & Mike Colvin. On the McDonnell-Douglas women’s team were Wendy Slayton Halamicek and Stephanie Pisha Todd. Mike Davies and Bob Schnurbush ran on the Monsanto team.”

Karen Hoff’s SLTC shirt draws kind attention at Blue Water Half Marathon Congratulations to Karen Hoff! Karen completed the Blue Water Half-marathon in Port Huron, Mich., on June 30 wearing a Saint Louis Track club T-shirt.

“Overall, just an exciting race for me,” she said. “This was a very enjoyable course. We ran about three miles along the waterway toward Lake Huron, with Canada just on the other side of the water. I am trying to run a half marathon in each state, so this was state #12 for me, and also was the first time I went back under two hours after being injured last November.”

“This is the first time I wore a SLTC shirt, instead of simply attaching a patch to my shirt,” Karen said. “It was cool enough in Michigan to wear something with sleeves. Interestingly, this time several people talked to me because of the shirt and were even more excited when they found out I was from the real St. Louis (apparently, St. Louis, Mich., is not real?).

One woman who introduced herself had run 147 marathons but really wanted to run a marathon in St. Louis. I told her about GO! St. Louis and Cowbell.”

Karen placed eighth in her 50-54 age group with her 1:59:26.8 chip time.

Jen Mommens, SLTC’s Executive Director, encouraged her to buy a SLTC singlet to wear in warmer weather.

The Blue Water Half-marathon course features a waterfront start, winding along the St. Clair River and, later, through historic residential areas. All half-marathon finishers receive an “impressive heavy brass medal” showing runners shadowed against a maritime scene.

Runners desiring a shorter distance may compete in the 5K, which started and finished at the YMCA. This year, 379 completed the half-marathon and 92 completed the 5k.

Dottie Gray continues to dominate age group competition The Saint Louis Track Club continues to have a national age group champion in its midst. Dottie Gray, 88, of Kirkwood, placed first among 85- to 89year-old women at the National Senior Games this summer in Cleveland, Ohio. Her 48:48.4 chip time in the 5k edged out her nearest competitor by three minutes. Dottie participated in seven events, winning fifth-place ribbons in the 50- and 100-meter sprints; a bronze medal in the 200-meter run; and

silver medals in the 400-, 800-, and 1500-meter runs, along with her gold medal in the 5K. She has participated in all National Senior Games, held every two years at varying locations, since the 1980s.

Dottie followed her stay in Cleveland with a visit to her daughter in Maine. After arriving late at night, she boarded a ferry early the next morning for the Peaks Island Five-mile race, where she took first place in the 70-99 year age group. The following weekend, she participated in the Beach to Beacon 10k, where she is well-known after many years of participation. Olympic champion Joan Benoit hugged Dottie when awarding her the Johnny Kelly Award, as the oldest participant Dottie Gray on the ferry to the Peals Island Road in the race.

After Dottie returned to Saint Louis, she ran the Waterloo, Ill., Optimist Club’s 11th Annual 5k. Race Director Brad Karn greeted her enthusiastically and reminded her that she had participated in their inaugural race.

Dottie bettered her National Senior Games’ time and took first place in the 80 & Over Division.

Don Hong pays Ralph Brindley a visit in Des Moines, Iowa Don Hong, 2008 SLTC’s Lifetime Achievement Award winner, visited SLTC’s 2003 Volunteer of the Year award winner, Ralph Brindley, in Des Moines, Iowa, this summer.

“My dad really enjoyed the visit and was sorry to see him go. It is so good for me to see him all animated and enjoying himself,” said Ralph’s daughter, Don Hong, right, 2008 SLTC’s Bev Harcourt.

flashlights. We were waiting for the power to go off at 7 p.m., but it went off at 9:20 p.m. and wasn’t back on until 3:30 p.m. the next day. He had a battery radio, so he could hear the baseball game and the news, so he was happy.”

Walking Ramblers plan to keep active with area walks, Frostbite Series “We’re always glad to have new people. We especially like to see people of all ages,” said Alison Bourey, co-organizer of The Walking Ramblers.

Their “Forest Park Walk” Aug. 25 began at the Visitors’ Center. Alison provided maps for 20K and 15K loops. Alison and Sue Turner walked both loops, totaling 22 miles. In contrast, another starter enjoyed a cool, brisk 2.5-mile walk, along a part of the mapped course through the Central West End. “I think this walk has been in existence at least 10 years,” commented Andy Bourey.

The walks continue throughout the winter. Courses include one trail walk in Pere Marquette State Park and historic treks on side streets through Maplewood, Ferguson, South City/Bevo, Lafayette Square, and through Bellefontaine Cemetery. Use of the Metro Link during a late winter Shrewsbury Walk, a New Year’s Day walk from the downtown Culinaria, and an optional climb of the Compton Heights water tower following a spring walk add variety. Walkers often enjoy brunch and socializing afterward.

“We like to keep up our mileage during the winter,” Alison said. “We love Forest Park, but we like to provide lots of different courses.”

Many Ramblers participate in The Frostbite Series on alternate weekends to maintain their winter mileage.

Matt Helbig, co-owner of Big River Running Company, and his wife welcomed their newborn daughter, Paige Evelyn Helbig, on July 30 at 10:30am.

“Mom and baby are doing very well,” Matt said, “and all of us are doing our best to teach Paige the ins and outs of sleeping through the night. Big brother Connor has been very excited to have a new baby sister!”

Matt and his staff commemorated seven years of business for Big River Running Company.

“Seven years ago, Ben and I opened the door of our first Big River Running Company store. Our main goal was, and has been, to strengthen and create a strong and vibrant running and walking community. Crazy, how fast time has gone!” Matt said.

Jim Powers passes Aug. 20 after valiant battle against cancer The Saint Louis Track Club extends its condolences to the family and friends of James Edward “Jim” Powers. Jim passed away at his home in Clayton on Aug. 20 after a valiant battle against cancer.

Jim’s running accomplishments included completing 25 marathons, including 13 consecutive Boston marathons. He graduated from Washington University, where he was named a Small College All-American on the basis of his football record. As an entrepreneur, he began Powers Computer Products from his home in 1977. After retiring in 2003, he spent more time at his second home in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Survivors include his wife, Kim; one son; and two daughters. Memorials may be made to The Siteman Cancer Center, or to the charity of the donor’s choice. A private memorial service will be held (Obituaries, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Thursday, August 22, 2013).

Meeting summary/Racing Team Update Rich Anderson spoke on behalf of the USATF and discussed how we can work together. The St. Louis Half Marathon and Clayton Police 5K will be sanctioned races and will be marketed to the 14 state region. USATF offers insurance as part of their sanctioning that covers beyond our standard policy.

There could be opportunities for the SLTC to host coaching or race directing classes.

Also discussed were changes to 2014 races, merchandise sales and potential charity partnerships.

SLTC Racing Team update: Team SLTC participants continue to rack up the mileage at summer races. Events range from the SLTC Pace Series to long distance events across the country. If you are not familiar with Team SLTC, here are the FAQ’s: How can I get involved? Anyone who is a SLTC members is already a part of Team SLTC! Just wear your SLTC

gear in a race and then let us know atoffice@stlouistrackclub.com.

What’s in it for me? At the end of the calendar year, we will hand out prizes and awards to EVERYONE who participates in the team. Just 50 miles raced get you a free, spacial edition Team SLTC shirt!

When do we get together? While ANY race counts toward your points total, we designate special team events throughout the year where club members can get together and socialize.

The next team event is the Clifton Heights 3k on September 28. This is an afternoon event with the Clifton Heights Neighborhood Association’s Party in the Park immediately after. Post-race, a live band takes the stage and SLTC will be there with refreshments from Schlafly for all club members to enjoy. We hope to see you there!

Races are scored based on actual time versus predicted time - of course, you run without a watch!

Each month the best 3 of 4 races will be used to determine ribbon winners for the top 10 closest estimators.

For the entire series, the best 12 of 16 races will determine trophy winners for the top 15 closest estimators.

St. Louis PAL is a not-for-profit organization that funds youth sports in St. Louis. Each PAL team is coached by an off duty SLMPD officer who volunteers to coach and mentor our youth. Last year over 700 kids participated in PAL sports in baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, boxing and track. Our young athletes have qualified and placed in multiple national tournaments and are great representatives of our local youth.
