Marathon is one of the longest-running half marathons in St. Louis. Over the past four decades, thousands of runners have participated in this classic St. Louis race.

Each year, the event draws runners from across the St. Louis region and country, hundreds of spectators, and countless volunteers. The event is the hallmark of the strong partnership between the St. Louis Track Club, the Clayton Police Department, and the Special Olympics of Missouri.

November 6 will mark the 37th

running of the St. Louis Half Marathon and over 15 years of the Clayton Police Department 5K. The courses start and end at the City of Clayton Recreation Complex located in the heart of downtown Clayton.

The half marathon course runs east through Clayton and the beautiful neighborhoods of University City, past the majestic and storied Washington University campus, and

into the world-famous Forest Park. The 5K and Kids’ ½ Mile runs are both within the city of Clayton.

From the President: The Joy of Firsts October is here! And while, sadly, it won’t be another Red October in the Lou, I usually like the chances of a team that has been there before. Teams with experience are less likely to wither beneath the bright lights of a big stage.

Because let’s face it: firsts can be scary. I remember how terrified I was when my father took the training wheels off my bike. He knew I’d be okay, but I wasn’t so sure. Now I’m the father teaching my boys to ride a bike, dive into a pool, and shed a diaper for big-boy pants.

A few weeks ago, I got to experience a new first.

Believe it or not, after more than six years of association with the St. Louis Track Club as a board member, race director, and eventually president, I finally made my first Pace Series event. In fairness to myself, Wednesday nights are tough since I coach my oldest son in sports, and we seem to have practice or a game almost every Wednesday night.

However, part of me has been pretty nervous to give the Pace Series a shot. My pacing skills are terrible and running without a GPS watch is terrifying. What if I stink at it? What if I am off my predicted time? What if I come in last place? I wasn’t worried about not doing well. I was more concerned about fitting in. To me, the Pace Series is for the hard-core St. Louis Track Club loyalists—the track club lifers and backbone of the club. I was worried about not being accepted into this special fraternity, yet I couldn’t have been more wrong. I was immediately brought in by the terrific director, Don Denham, and introduced to the group. Maybe it was the post-run pizza, beer and cake that did it, but everyone was so friendly and chatty with me.

It was such a fun night—from the run to the dinner to the awards to the camaraderie. It was what the St. Louis Track Club is all about: making everyone in the running and walking communities feel

welcome and like they belong, even if it’s their first time out.

I learned a lesson. The Pace Series is a great SLTC event with great SLTC people. I will certainly make it a point to attend more Pace Series runs next year.

I’m no longer afraid of not fitting in. I am, however, still afraid of my all-over-the-map pacing.

SLTC Board Member Rae Mohrmann reported from a mountainous 165-mile team event.

“Fortuitously, I was a member of a relay team comprised mainly of GO! St. Louis staff and a few others-- Brian Lyons, Brooke Hjelle, Alsion Berger, Frank Hopper, Brian Bauer, Susan Sauer, Angelica Nuno, Matt West, Brandon Janowsky, van driver Chase Mathis, Karen Lester and I. We ran the Flaming Foliage Relay put on by Roads Less Traveled. Though a relatively small race with about 22 teams, it was extremely well organized and implemented over the two days.”

The Flaming Foliage Relay, Buena Vista, Colorado, features three mountain passes, and 31 miles of single-track trails during the 30-leg relay. The course was developed from a path created by Outward Bound in 1998.

Rae continued, “Our relay traveled from Idaho Springs to Buena Vista, CO, September 9 and September 10. Needless to say, it was beautiful, but high in elevation. Adrenaline gets one through the first quarter mile of each leg, and then we just sucked air! Each exchange point brought snickers from the natives about us being ‘that team from St Louis,’ but we triumphed by finishing first in the Mixed Open Division. We finished in a lovely park on a gorgeous day to pizza, watermelon, cookies

Best wishes to longtime SLTC member Peter “Pete” Mannisi who is re-locating to Eugene, Oregon. Pete moved to Fairfield, Iowa, in 2007 to join Maharishi University of Management, a consciousness-based university centered on transcendental meditation

and the teachings of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi group.

“Eugene is environmentally friendly. There are a lot of bicycle paths, a lot of things for people who want to do things outdoors,” Pete said.

“Eugene is a big running town. I ran two races there during a two-week visit in July. One was a 3K on the Hayward track at Bill Bowerman All-Comers Track Meet. I ran 12:31, under the national All-American standard for 65-69 year olds (12:45).”

Peter ran cross country and track at Normandy High School and was co-captain of the team during his senior year. He continued running and was the SLTC Runner of the Year in his age group from 1981 until 1986, when he tied with Bob Bellora. He ran five Boston Marathons. On September 17, Pete participated in the Run for the Hills 5K through his former South City neighborhood. Pete also has an extensive coaching history. He started a track team at Peabody School in 1981 and trained students for the St. Patrick's Day 1-Mile Run. He coached cross country at Nerinx Hall High School from 1995 through 2000 and coached at Busch Academic and Athletic Academy from 2002 through 2005. In Fairfield, Iowa, he coached the MUM Running Club, a club for runners of all ages and abilities, from 2008 until recently.

Pete plans to continue spiritual teachings and his holistic lifestyle in Oregon. He intends to return to St. Louis to enjoy his family and friends for his 55 high school reunion in 2020.

Austin Hindman World Champion

Congratulations to Austin Hindman of Wildwood who won triathlon’s ITU Junior World Championship at Marina Fonatur in

Cozumel on September 16. It was the first world championship for Hindman, 17, who previously achieved a junior Pan American title and a junior North American title.

Hindman’s win, coupled with Taylor Knibb’s win in the female division, made the United States the first nation to earn gold medals in both the men’s and women’s ITU Junior World Championships the same year in more than two decades.

Hindman completed the 750-meter swim, 20K bicycle ride, and 5K run in 54:02, edging out his nearest competitor by ten seconds.

Hindman connected with the lead bike pack and was able to position himself toward the front at the start of the 5K run. His 5k split of 15:47 was the second fastest in the field and helped secure his title.

"I was not in the best position coming out of T2 and I wasn't sure how it would affect my run, but I came off the bike feeling good and just started to work my way up one by one," Hindman said in an interview for Runners Web. "I ended up in a really good position by the last lap and just went for the win, and it paid off. I couldn't be happier. After crashing twice last year and the race being changed to a duathlon, I was pretty demoralized. Coming into this race, I was really motivated and just wanted to prove myself on the world stage. It feels amazing to come away with a great race,” he said.

A senior standout runner for the Lafayette cross country and track teams, Hindman was honored at SLTC’s annual banquet and was named an “Athlete of the Week” by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on September 22. Hindman expressed utmost thanks to his coach, Jenny Weber, via Twitter.

Kerri Morgan Wins Bronze in Brazil

Another St. Louisan who achieved worldwide recognition is Kerri Morgan. Morgan won the bronze medal in the 400-meter sprint and the silver medal in the 100-meter sprint at the Paralympics wheelchair competitions in Rio de Janeiro this September. Morgan, 42, who lives in Olivette, is Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy and Neurology at Washington University and Chairman of the Board of Paraquad, an organization which advocates for persons with disabilities. She was featured in the “How I Did It” column in the Sunday edition of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Sunday September 25.

3 Races, 3 Days, 3 States for Kathy Pearman

Kathy Pearman ran three races in three days in three states!

“The trip started the Friday of Labor Day weekend, when we drove from St. Louis to Little Rock,” Kathy said. “On Saturday morning, I raced the ARK 5K in North Little Rock, which ran along the Arkansas River and was very scenic. I was the fourth female and first Masters woman, and I won a pretty nice wine glass for my efforts!”

Kathy continued, “Saturday afternoon we made our way from Little Rock to Irving, Texas, just outside of Dallas. Sunday morning, I ran the Texas Rangers Labor Day Race, which was pretty warm and humid—not so scenic as the course circled the Rangers and Cowboys stadiums—but we did finish inside the baseball stadium, on third base. Once again, I was the fourth woman and second in the Masters division. The South takes their masters running pretty seriously. From there, we drove from

Irving to Tulsa. Monday morning, I ran the Run to the Son 5K and was third overall. It was by far the warmest and hilliest race, but it also happened to by my fastest.”

“This quick trip helped me cross three states off in my quest to run a race in every state. We brought our dog, Lola, and she probably had the most fun! And she got the most attention.”

Hills and Hollows Half Marathon and 5K

Rae Mohrmann ran the Melvin J. Fisher Hills and Hollows Half Marathon and 5K on September 24.

“The race has certainly earned its name!” Rae said. “There are hills and hollows! Just an hour outside of St. Louis lies the town of Valmeyer, I—many of you—remember the flood of '93, when Valmeyer flooded and the people decided to rebuild on higher ground. The new Valmeyer was the site of the 12th Annual Hills and Hollows Half-Marathon and 5K event. All proceeds benefit military and first responders, ‘who stand and fight for our freedom.’ Race headquarters was the local firehouse where you could still register on race day. Twenty

minutes before the starting gun, the American Legion marched down the flag-lined street and presented the colors. Someone gave the invocation, another led us in “The Star Spangled Banner,” and another led us all in “The Pledge of Allegiance.” Both races started together, winding through country roads. We watched crops being harvested as we ran.

Miles 11 through 13 is one long hill— remember that Valmeyer is now on higher ground! The finish area was quite festive, with beverages and food served at the firehouse, followed by the awards ceremony. There was quite a contingency from the St. Louis area.

Larry Smith, who is 57, was 3rd overall with a time of 1:30:57.”

Marvin Fisher originated the Melvin J. Fisher Hills and Hollows Half-Marathon and 5K in honor of his twin brother, who passed away in December of 2004. Since its beginning, the Hills and Hollows Road Runners Club of America has donated nearly $45,000 to The BackStoppers, Valmeyer Active Firemen’s Association and Maeystown Fire Department.

The race was chosen for the Road Runners Club of America, Illinois State Championship and Half Marathon Race for 2016.

Whether in venues that are global or local, the St. Louis Track Club wishes the best to all.

Are You Gellin’? Carb Replacement 101

Is there anything better than fall running? The chill in the air, the crackling leaves, and the abundance of great races in the area… what could beat it?

With several longer road and trail races approaching, some of you are logging serious miles.

Nutrition becomes more important for performance and recovery as mileage increases. Which begs the question: Are you gellin’?

Energy gels (chews, beans, bars, drinks, blocks, waffles) raise many questions, especially for new runners. What are energy gels? What is the best way to use them? Do you even need them?

This month, I will discuss mid-workout fueling— specifically carb replacement. As the title suggests, this article will just hit the basics. I will dig deeper into this topic in upcoming articles. Let’s begin with some background on why we might need to replace carbs.

Our bodies have several sources of energy available for running. Short sprint workouts use mostly glucose (carbohydrates) in the form of muscle glycogen. We rely more on fats* for fuel during longer duration runs, but we still need some glucose to help us use the fats effectively.

We hit a wall when we continue running after our glycogen stores are critically low. For most people, this depletion begins after about 90 minutes of running. In fact, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) reports that energy products increase endurance by about 20% in workouts longer than 90 minutes. So what are these carb replacements?

The main ingredients in energy supplements are simple sugars—like fructose or glucose—or maltodextrin, because they digest the fastest. You may see herbs, vitamins, electrolytes, caffeine, and other ingredients on the label.

Research suggests that caffeine may further boost performance, but some runners are sensitive to caffeine. This is a personal choice. Electrolytes are added to help with fluid balance. Most other additives probably aren’t harmful, but there is no strong research supporting them.

Carb replacements come in many forms, including gels, blocks, chews, beans, and drinks. If you are new to distance running or mid-race fueling, head to a running store and grab a mix of products. Try them out during longer training runs and see what

you think. As with any change to your nutrition, never try it for the first time on race day.

And once you find “the one,” how do you use carb replacement products? There are conflicting opinions on this topic. Research supports intake of 25-75 grams of carbohydrate per hour beginning 60 minutes after your workout starts. This equals 1 to 3 gels, 3 to 9 blocks, or 1 to 3 cups of a 6-8 percent carbohydrate drink per hour. If you choose an edible product (including gels), take a couple of swigs of water after your supplement to help speed digestion.

Unless you are running at high intensity for more than an hour, one serving per hour may be sufficient. You could increase to 2 servings (or go wild and split the difference) if you become fatigued often during practice runs.

Keep in mind that these products are pure sugar, and going overboard can cause GI distress for some. Carb products also increase your risk of cavities, which is another good reason to use the minimum needed.

There are also many options for those who don’t love commercial products. As I wrote last month, dried fruits are a great alternative to supplements. One ounce of raisins contains 22 grams of carbohydrate. Further, two packets of honey (1 ounce total) contains 23 grams of carbohydrate. I know runners who like to mash up sweet potatoes and stick them in baggies to eat during races. Do what works for you! Just aim for 25-75 grams of carb per hour after the first hour.

Interestingly, swishing a sports drink in your mouth and spitting it out appears to have similar benefits as consuming an energy product. Researchers believe that some of the greatest effects of carb products are mental.

When sugary products hit our taste buds, the brain’s reward center activates the nerves and muscles. This appears to boost performance. If you’ve ever eaten a gel and felt amazing right away, this is your reward center in action. It

takes time for carbs to digest and reach the blood and muscles, so any immediate effects are likely related to the brain.

I have a half marathon coming up in two weeks and just realized I need new shoes for race day. Is it okay to race with new shoes or should I use my old ones?

What you’re going through, good sir, is called the taper tantrums. Many races are either made or broken during this phase in your training, and it’s up to you to reel it in and keep calm. Symptoms of the taper tantrums include excessive hunger, way too much energy, phantom injuries, and the dreaded voices in your head.

Well, contrary to what you may have heard in the past, purchasing new shoes a few weeks before your race isn’t as controversial as it used to be.

(That is, as long as you are purchasing the same brand and model that you’ve been training and/or racing in.) Since you still have around 10-14 days of running before race day, you have plenty of time to get the feel of your new shoes and break them in a little since most models are designed to be worn “off the lot,” so to speak. Now, I wouldn’t purchase them the day before your race, but buying them a week or more out isn’t going to hurt. And if you don’t like the fit of your new kicks, don’t be afraid to wear your old pair as long—as they don’t have more than 300-350 miles on them. Good luck!

Styles, I’m a wreck. I have a marathon coming up in a week and I’m going crazy. Up is down, down is up, and I’m pretty sure I broke my ankle getting off the couch. Should I run away with the circus never to come back? Or is there hope for me?

As a marathon vet with 12 fulls under my belt, let me tell you about those voices in your head: they’re going to say that you’re running too much and need a break. Or, on the flip side, they’ll say you haven’t trained enough. But alas!

Don’t listen to them: it’s a trap!

Whether you are working with a coach or training on your own, trust your training and continue with your routine through race day. If you’re hungry, eat—and don’t worry about any weight gain (real or perceived), as long as you eat mindfully and don’t stuff

yourself with junk food in the name of “carb loading.” Use that extra energy and take a walk or take care of that honey-do list you’ve been meaning to tackle. Or—and stay with me here—RELAX. It’s all going to be okay. Like they say, the hay is in the barn.

My last piece of advice: in the last few days before your race, try to do things—many, many things—that have nothing to do with running. Sure, you can go over the course map, plan your expo strategy, and your race day nutrition. But don’t obsess over running. I usually pick up a good book, rent movies I’ve been meaning to watch, and catch up with friends over dinner or facetime. Good luck! You’re going to crush it!

Ask Styles Note: Since we are in the midst of marathon season, I want to give a shout-out to some friends who submitted their worst taper stories. In the interest of time, let me just say that they ranged from the funny (a friend’s calves grew so much that she couldn’t wear her favorite skinny jeans), to pretty serious (a run-in with a swarm of bees and a broken foot—don’t worry—two different people). Remember friends, the taper will mess with your mind, but you’ve got this. You’ve spent 12-16 weeks (or more) chasing the goal of the marathon.

Don’t let these last 1-2 weeks mess with your head.

The St. Louis Track Club Marathon Training Team recently completed their last training run.
