Pace Series winds down for season The 36th Annual St. Louis Half Marathon and Clayton Police 5K will be Sunday, Nov. 1.

We still need more than 100 volunteers to make this event a success, particularly course marshals. Volunteering is a great way to give back to the club, meet other members and volunteers, and cheer on a friend at the race, all while supporting the Special Olympics.

We need volunteers for set up on Friday, set up and packet pick up on Saturday, and packet pick up, course marshals, water station, finish line and clean up on Sunday.

We are very flexible with scheduling.

President’s Column

Don’t forget to volunteer!

St. Louis Track Club Members, Greetings Track Club Members, fall time is here! While that means football season for many, it means cross country and race season for runners! There are numerous races taking place around St. Louis over the next few weeks, and I hope to see many of you healthy and racing at the events.

One of the Track Club’s premier events is less than a month away, the annual Half Marathon and 5k on November 1. The event has grown into a solid partnership between the St. Louis Track Club, the Clayton Police Department and Special Olympics Missouri. For those who do not know, half of the race proceeds are donated to the Special Olympics Missouri. Please come out and support the race and a great local cause. If you are unable to run, please consider volunteering on race weekend. Volunteers can sign up directly on our website at http://www.stlouistrackclub.

Lastly, SLTC’s own Ryan Yoch finished the 100M Yellowstone Teton Ultramarathon, congrats on the achievement! Until next time, keep putting one foot in front of the other!

SLTC’s Jonathan Yoch wins HOA marathon title Congratulations to all who completed The Heart of America marathon over Labor Day weekend.

“Saint Louis Track Club’s own Jonathan Yoch , 27, was the overall winner on a hot and hilly course with a time of 3:06:10!,” said Rae Mohrmann.

Rae was the first 60plus female in 5:00:42.

Other Saint Louis participants included Natalie Runkel, 1st overall female, 20, in 3:26:45; Bill Kataska, 1st male 50-54; Dorit Golan, 1st female 55-59; Travis Connelly, 2nd male 20-24; Dave Dobkowski, 3rd male 5559; Jim Gunderson, 2nd male 60-plus; Mitch Neuhaus, Jim Behrens, Sean McGroatry, Brooke Sloss, Ron Golan, Mark Oppenheim, Matthew Thomas, Terri Menghini, Rosemary Smith, Brent Newman, Cassie Acton, Mark Bussen, Tom Gazda, Tiffany Ayolo, Scooby Nelson, Sean McGroarty, and Mitch Neuhaus.

“As a Saint Louis Track Club member but living in West Des Moines, IA, this is a must,” said John Schneller, who took third place in the 60+ age group, during a local interview. “I see friends from Saint Louis and Missouri from years past. So much of my family history involves the Missouri River, so it is quite a pleasure to see the Mighty Missouri at the half way point. This is probably a similar scene to what Lewis and Clark saw 210 years ago.

“Labor Day is usually weather for a ‘DASH’, but with the (6 a.m.) starting time, this marathon is

manageable. Do it in 2016, you will like it! Mark your calendar now, meet a friend at the Heart of America Marathon, and I promise you will want to do it again! Kudos to the Columbia, Missouri, Track Club. I could name many volunteers, but I would not want to slight anyone as they are all so good. The aides at the end of the race are great, also.”

The USATF-certified Heart of America course has been a Labor Day weekend tradition since 1960.

Many Saint Louisans have weathered its challenges of the challenging course over its 55-year history; 162 people completed the course this year, coming from hometowns ranging from Columbia, Mo., to Oaxaca, Mexico, to Toronto, Canada.

March to the Arch commemorates Sept. 11 At 9:11 am on Friday, Sept. 11, several hundred people walked from Town and Country to the Gateway Arch in The March to the Arch, an event to remember those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. Bo Drochelman originated the “march” in 2002. The 21-mile walk began at Mike Duffy’s, Highway 141 and Clayton Road in West County. People were more than welcome to join in at any point along the way with the group, but were encouraged to finish with the group at the Arch.

“There is no cost to participate in this walk. It is simply a walk to celebrate the freedom of America” said Bo Drochelman via KSDK news. “I was try-

ing to make a statement to the people who lost their relatives, lost their lives--that we cared.”

SLTC’s member Sue Turner walked the entire 21mile course. She said that plans were underway to expand the event to commemorate the 15th anniversary in 2016.

FPXC 10th anniversary sees 4,000 participants “The Forest Park Cross Country Festival (FPXC) celebrated its 10th birthday with a record number of team entries and number of states participating, on a beautiful September weekend in Forest Park,” said Katie Helbig, of Big River Running Company. “FPXC saw more than 4,000 participants, with colleges competing on Friday, Sept. 11, and 15 races, including an open race for community members, high school, and middle school on Saturday, Sept. 12.”

“Big River Running and St. Louis University High School hosted the meet, which was sponsored by Saucony. With LouFest’s date coming on top of FPXC this year, the meet moved to Aviation Field within Forest Park. In addition to the new course, FPXC also added a third varsity division, which led to even more dialed in competition in the races.”

“It has been amazing to see the growth of this meet in the last 10 years, said Matt Helbig, of Big River Running. “Not only do high school kids in the St. Louis area look forward to this race, but powerhouse teams from all over the Midwest and the country make the trip to Forest Park to compete. It’s a labor of love to put on the meet, but so rewarding to see the participants crossing the finish line having given it their all on the race course.”

Naeger took the individual titles in the girls and boys races, respectively,” Katie Helbig reported.

“Lafayette High School came out as the top team on both the boys and girls side. It was a great day for cross country across all levels of competition!“

New Trail race offers 10- and 4-mile routes “Big River Running Company started the fall running season going full tilt!” Tony Castelli of Big River Race Management said. The Race Management team introduced a new trail running experience, The Flint Ridge Trail Race, on a beautiful, challenging, course located in Indian Camp Creek Park. The race came in two distances: 10 Mile and 4 Mile. The 10 Mile-distance also kicked off Big River’s new Trail Series, a 3-race challenge incorporating the preexisting Skippo and Castlewood Cup races. TenMile winners Andrea Karl and Kwin Keuter, along with 4-Mile winners Alisa Artioli and Richard DiMarco, all ran their way to brand-new pairs of shoes from Brooks.

“I moved here recently from the Seattle area, and I have done quite a few trail events. I just wanted to tell you that your race was extremely well organized, extremely well marked--this from one who has been known to get completely lost on even a road race-- and extremely well staffed with great organizers and volunteers, and that the post-race feed was... outstanding, in best Midwest fashion.

Also I LOVED the option of not getting a shirt,” one finisher told Tony.

John Merli, owner of Dogfish Apparel and Dogfish Cycling, founded St. Louis-based Dogfish Racing team in January 2015. He founded the team in conjunction with Saint Louis University Head Track & Field Coach, Jon Bell, hoping to bring local elite, as well as enthusiastic, runners together.

“John and I decided last fall to begin structuring a racing team,” Jon Bell said, “following the model used in cycling--the Dogfish company has sponsored a cycling team for the past 18 years, and continues to be one of the leaders in cycling in the St. Louis area. I have been a member of the Dogfish team since I moved to St. Louis in January 2007. I no longer run competitively, just coach.

We have an elite team, which currently consists of four members--three women, one man. We also offer what we call the “expert” team. The expert team is open to any adult who pays the club dues, and currently has 12 members.

“John has secured multiple sponsors for the team,” Jon said, “which has helped us pay our elite athletes a small salary, as well as provide their race entry fees and some gear. Both John and I wanted to bring a more professional approach to the sport. We also wanted to raise the level of racing amongst the elites in the area. We picked five races to support our athletes. At these races, we provide a tailgate area, so our athletes can meet before and after the race, have water/beer, food, and a lot of great company! Next year we plan on adding a few more amenities. These will most likely include some group runs and some other training opportunities. All are welcome, and the benefits of joining the team are many!

With a nominal annual membership fee of $50, members receive an official Dogfish running jersey, warm-up tee, access to great discounts on brand-name shoes and apparel, and race-day benefits at all Dogfish sponsored races including a team tent and refreshments.” Contact jbell30@ slu.edu, or team@dogfish1.com.

Pace Series wraps up; Visitors Center revamped The 2015 Saint Louis Track Club Summer Pace Series concluded September 23rd with a buffet picnic and awards to “pacers” and volunteers.

Forest Park has been the venue of the Summer Pace Series since 1970s. Runners have seen many changes in Forest Park since the inception of the Pace Series. To name a few--The Visitors’ Center has been refurbished, with added locker rooms and meeting facilities--a dual purpose path surrounds the park; different roads, new waterways, signage, and drinking fountains grace running and walking routes. A new feature is recently-installed energy efficient lighting at the top of Art Hill. The LED lighting will use approximately 20% of the energy as the older lighting, last longer and require less maintenance. The new lighting was made possible by a generous donation to Forest Park Forever by Pershing Charitable Trust.

What do you think about vegetarian diets?

Q: Hey Styles, what do you think about considering a vegetarian diet while training for a race? Sara S. A: Hey Sara, that is an interesting question. As a carnivore myself, it is something I have never tried, however, I do have several running friends that went to such a diet and have seen significant improvement in regard to overall fitness. I am not sure if it could be done in just one training cycle; you might be looking at a lifestyle change if you decide to try it. I would say what the heck, go for it.

Maybe consult your doctor or a dietitian to ensure you know what to put in your body to help keep the engine burning during training. Good luck!
