President’s Column

Another great SLTC Half Marathon in the books!

St. Louis Track Club Members, Greetings! I write this Sunday evening, Nov. 2, reflecting on the St. Louis Track Club Half Marathon and 5K; what a great race! Congratulations to all finishers, and there are not enough ways to thank the sponsors and those who came out to volunteer. Without the volunteers we would not be able to put on this great race, so thanks to those who took time out of their Sunday to help make this a success. I would also like to thank USATF for making this the USATF Mid-America Region Half Marathon Championship, helping bring in some of the great elite runners year after year. Some of the fastest half marathon times in St. Louis, if not all of Missouri, are run in Clayton/St. Louis on the first Sunday in November! Additionally, thank you to the Clayton Police Department, they have been a great partner for this race over the years. Lastly, excellent job by Race Director Kevin Jokisch for putting on a great race and keeping things organized on race day!

Kevin not only did a great job of running the race, he even dialed up a nice, cool day for runners to put it all on the line. And put it on the line they did! Having the privilege of driving the pace car, I was able to watch the leaders throughout the Half Marathon. Philip Lagat ran a strong race, pull-

ing away from the pack and holding off Stephen Pifer. The women came to compete as well! Lilian Mariita took first overall female, but four female runners eclipsed the previous race record, unbelievable! Our St. Louis Track Club Premier team, sponsored by Race STL, put up some great times as well, led by David Rumsey and Danny Stults finishing in the top 10 of a very competitive field!

Congratulations are also in order for our 5K winners; Kwin Keuter was just off the race record pace, and Tina Murtha took first female overall. In all, it was a blast driving the pace car, and being able to watch all of the runners make the last turn to the finish. The only disappointment for me is that I was not able to run the race!

It’s important to recognize the greater importance of this race. Some of the proceeds from the race go to benefit the Special Olympics. So, on behalf of the St. Louis Track Club and Clayton Police Department, we once again would like to thank the volunteers and runners that toe the line year after year for a great cause. It’s times like this I really take pride in being a runner.

Fran and Rick Armstrong make strides in Orienteering Saint Louis Track Club members Fran and Rick Armstrong have been making their marks in Orienteering this fall. Fran was the first-place winner at The U.S. Sprint Orienteering Championship, category - Females 65-69 on Friday, Oct. 3 at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester, New York. Fran was actually third overall, beaten by Guninger Sahlberg (Swedish) and Jenny Hawkins (Australian) who were ineligible for the U.S. Championship. On Sunday, Fran competed in the 3.5-kilometer Middle event, held at Letchworth State Park, Portageville, New York.

“I finished in just under 51 minutes, which was good for me,” she said “I was 7th of 10 in my category. Rick did well at the U.S. Nationals. 5th (age group) in the Middle distance.”

“We’ve been seeing old friends and making new ones traveling, camping, hiking, touring in the meantime and after Selkirk Shores Sate Park. Cold, but we were fine.”

“Orienteering is the sport of navigating through an unfamiliar area using a map and perhaps a compass. The object is to make your way through a series of points and return to the finish line in the shortest amount of time.

The route of your journey is up to you. Each ‘point’ has an orange and white ‘control’ marker and a unique punch card so that the contestants can prove that they found the control. Whether walking or running, this sport involves endurance, ingenuity, and decision making,” reads the St. Louis Orienteering Club’s

website. The Saint Louis Orienteering Club has a 30-plus year history. Many local athletes, like Fran and Rick, have complemented their running or walking with orienteering.

Big River Running launches women’s only group run “We are launching Women Run Wednesdays - a women’s only, weekly group run,” posted Matt Helbig of Big River Running Company, October 21. “Members of the Big River family often tell me how motivating it is to have a group to run with. We have an awesome group of regulars at our Monday Night Group Runs, but some women work afternoon shifts. Some families find dinner time hectic. Some of our female staff came up with the idea and said, ‘Why not Wednesday mornings?’

“We hope the women of Big River join some of our supportive female staff members for a weekly Wednesday morning group run — push a stroller full of kids — run with your dog — bring a friend who has wanted to get active but hasn’t been motivated to get out the door herself. Not only do women run the world, but now they’ll run Wednesdays, too.”

Thirteen women enjoyed a two or a four-mile course around South City at the inaugural run Oct. 22, according to Maureen Glidewell, Retail Sales, Big River Running Company’s South City store. A representative from 2XU proved the women “demos” to wear of compression socks and sleeves while running, and treated the women to coffee and bagels post-run.

Dottie Gray adds 7 World Senior Games titles to collection Dottie Gray competed in seven track and field events at The Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah, on Oct. 6 to 18.

She placed first in her 85-89 year age group in all seven events: 50meter dash, 100-meter dash, 200-meter run, 400-meter run, 800-meter run, 1,500-meter run, and 3k. Dottie set the meet record for the 3k in 2013 with a time of 27:57:29. Dottie will turn 90 next June. Let’s bet on some more age group records.

Dottie described the weather as beautiful, the spectators as very supportive, and mentioned a big breakfast and dinner for the competitors.

The World Senior Games began in 1987 to promote health and to showcase achievements of men and women 55 and older. In 1989, Jon M. Huntsman, Chairman of The Huntsman Corporation, became the principal sponsor, and the age entry limit was lowered to 50. Other health promotion activities include comprehensive health screenings.

“According to RunningUSA, more runners race on Thanksgiving Day than on any other holiday,” reads Runner’s World (November 2014, p. 97).

SLTC Volunteer Awards Program The Volunteer Awards Program is the Track Club’s way of showing appreciation for those people, members and nonmembers, who so generously volunteer and assist at various Track Club events.

The following describes how this program is conducted.

How to Accumulate Volunteer Points  2 points: A volunteer such as a water station worker, traffic official, finish line worker, etc  4 points: A volunteer who has performed more than three hours of continuous volunteering  15 points: A Captain of a SLTC Event in charge of registration, results, traffic, water stations, finish line, etc.  25 points: A Race Director of a SLTC Event or Picnic Coordinator.  50 points: A Race Director of a SLTC Series Event, Awards Banquet Coordinator, Expo Booth Coordinator  100 points: A Race Director for a SLTC Major Event or Pace Series Coordinator.

Volunteer Awards 5-100 points: A gift certificate equal to $1 for each point earned over 5 points, with a maximum of 100 points. Volunteer Awards will be presented at the St. Louis Track Club Awards Banquet.

Member profile: John Schneller Name and age: John Schneller, 70 Where you were born: St. Louis, Mo. Occupation: Sales/Registered Represenative-AXA. Family: Spouse, Judy, and daughters Jill and Jane.

Why you started running: I did a 40-story stair climb and did so well I thought I should run horizontally, as it is easier.

Running since: 2004; before, that in US Army, and before that in 9th grade Normandy, Mo. SLTC member since: 2014 How you learned about the club: Meeting and making friends at St. Louis races.

Mileage: 20 to 30 Favorite place to run: Pere Marquette State Park and Forest Park, but the BIX in Davenport is exceptional, as well as the Dam to Dam 1/2 in Des Moines.

Favorite shoes: Nike Spiders for short runs and Saucony Kinvara for longer runs.

Proudest performance: First in age group Bix 2011 and first in age group Pere Marquette 2009 and set new age record. Won Dam to Dam age group last 5 of 6 years.

Favorite SLTC event: Half marathon in the fall.

What you like about the club: I’m a new member, so I am just getting used to it.

Favorite restaurant: Pere Marquette fried chicken.

Frostbite Series Race Day Tips & Tidbits Here are some tips for Frostbite Saturday mornings

 Race website: fleetfeetstlouis.com/racing/highlighted-races/frostbite-series  Parking: Parking is available in the lot that is just to the east of the tennis courts and just south of the Visitor’s Center. Street parking is also available throughout the park. Be sure to park legally.  Race bibs: Be sure to pick up a new race bib before each race. (No need to keep your bibs after each run.)  Race day registration: Will be available in the Learning Lab in the northeast room of the Visitor's Center. Follow the hall that says EDUCATION above it. Apparel and other gear will also be for sale before and after the runs in the Learning Lab.  When to arrive: Bib pickup and on-site registration is from 6:45-8:10am in the Visitor's Center. But for those who like to sleep in as late as possible, please plan to arrive no later than 7:30-7:45, so you have time to park, get your bib, stretch, say hello, all that good stuff. The Visitor's Center gets pretty crowded on cold morning so please plan a few extra minutes on those mornings.  Starting areas: Short and Long Course starting lines will be identified by 10-foot tall signs near the Forest Park Visitor’s Center. Please look for this signage to confirm that you are at the correct starting line for your race.  Courses: Please see our area paths page and scroll down to the Frostbite Series routes to see where each course starts or click on the distances in the chart: Frostbite Distances and Course Routes Dec. 13: 12K or 3K

Dec. 27: 10-mile or 2-mile

Jan. 24: Half marathon or 4-miler

Jan. 10: 20K or 5K

Feb 7: 10K & Series awards

 Start times: The Short Course start time will be approximately 8:30am and the Long Course start time will be approximately 8:35am. Both start times will be officiated by a St. Louis Track Club Race Director. Each race will be officially started by an Air Horn.  Inclement weather: Be sure to check facebook.com/saintlouistrackclub, twitter.com/sltcrunning and stlouistrackclub.com in case of inclement weather. We likely won’t cancel unless it’s really icy.

If you have any concerns, please consider if conditions are right for you.  Food! Afterward, be sure to relax and grab a snack behind the Visitor’s Center after your run.  Series shirts: Series shirts are available in the Visitor’s Center Learning Lab after the second run.

They are free to Series entrants and will be available for $15 to everyone after the 4th and 5th runs.

To get to the learning lab, head to the northeast corner of the Visitor’s Center and follow the long hall that says EDUCATION above it.  Note about Forest Park streets: The streets of Forest Park do remain open during the run. We will have course marshals on the course but please be aware that cars will be driving through the park while we are running the Frostbite. Also, the streets are maintained by the city and not the SLTC.  As acknowledged by each participant (or parent or guardian if under 18) on their entry, bicycles, skates, baby joggers, pets and headphones are not permitted.

A: Can I answer the whole thing? Actually, I had the opportunity to ride in the pace car, and watching the elites was something special. The Frostbite Series starts on Dec. 13 and will be on alternating Saturdays through Feb. 7. The Frostbite Series is a challenging event, because there are usually 1,000+ participants, there are two distances for each event, and the distances range during the series from a 3k to half marathon.

Volunteers are particularly important for this series, and we traditionally struggle to get the necessary help. Please consider helping out! We need volunteers for set up and packet pick up, course marshals, water station, and the finish line on race day. We need inside and outside help, and you can volunteer for one Saturday or all of them. We are very flexible with scheduling.
