President’s Column

Volunteers shine at SLTC Half and 5k

St. Louis Track Club Members, We have just concluded our annual St. Louis Track Club Half Marathon and 5K. It has been very rewarding working with the Clayton Police Department and the Center of Clayton staff to put on this event to benefit Special Olympics. It was exciting to see some of the Special Olympics Athletes come out and present finisher medals to the youth runners and the Half Marathon finishers at the finish line.

What a great day for a race! We had great racing weather, a great crowd and a great group of volunteers. The extra hour of sleep was nice too. It was exciting to watch our young youth runners as well as the elite athletes as they effortlessly crossed the finish line.

CONGRATULATIONS to ALL the Finishers.

Richard Anderson, our race director managed another successful event for us. There is much coordination of many tasks that needs to be executed prior to the big event day. Helping Rich with many of those tasks was our Executive Director, Jen Mommens. They both worked many hours on planning and executing this event. This involved communication and coordination in areas from registration, to timing, shirts, medals, advertising, course, elite athletes, water stations, and traffic control.

Thank you both for a job well done!

Others that worked behind the scenes in preparing for our event include SLTC Webmaster, Anna Jones and Editor, Sallie Story; former SLTC Board Member and volunteer coordinator, Christy Polk; several members of the Clayton Police Department; several Center of Clayton staff members; and Special Olympic staff members.

Thank you to ALL of our other volunteers that helped us on Saturday at the Expo and all those that helped on Sunday morning. YOU are truly appreciated. The event could not have taken place without you.

As always, we welcome feedback from you. Let us know how we can make this a better event for you.

Our next event is the Marathon Relay on Sunday, November 17th. This is a fun event. Just grab 3 other people and register as a team. This year a costume competition has been added to the fun. It can be as simple as matching t-shirts or wacky costumes. Use your imagination. Check out our website for more details.

Denis McCarthy knocks out second round of 50-state marathon runs

Blizzard disrupts race plans but brings LIFE runners together

Congratulations to Denis McCarthy. On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28 and 29, Denis finished the Oregon, and Bellingham Bay, Wash., marathons to total 50-state marathon finishes for his second time. It also was Denis’ second time he achieved the Marathon Maniac’s club top status of “Titanium,” by completing 30 marathons in 20 states within 365 days.

“Both courses were very pretty,” Denis said, “but, unfortunately, the remnants of a typhoon out of Asia hit hard, resulting in continuous down pours, winds and cold. Still, the mission was accomplished.”

Denis said that he wore a plastic bag for rain gear, both days, as the weather was so bad.

Denis’ marathon count is now 137, eight of which occurred in September. He said that he had a few more scheduled to round out the year, and that then he planned to take a break.

His plans include marathons in Saint Louis, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Iowa, and Tennessee.

A Saint Louis contingency of the LIFE Runners had an unexpected challenge. En route to the Crazy Horse 1K/5K/Half and Full Marathon in Rapid City, South Dakota, nearly 200 were stranded in a freak snowstorm the first weekend of October.

“It wasn’t easy arranging transportation to the Black Hills, with very few direct flights and a long drive. Then, Atlas showed up, possibly the most destructive winter storm on record in South Dakota,” said Anne Carmichael, LIFE Runner VP of Communications and Vitae VP. “Mission-focused LIFE Runners came anyway!

Thursday brought rain to most of South Dakota and much wind as well. Driving across the flat and wide open state was a dance, with the strong wind gusts that came with a punch. (After the snow began, our organizer) Pat knew the bus would not make it, so, he made arrangements to have the bus stop at Ellsworth Air Force Base, which is on the eastern side of Rapid City. It’s a good thing, because it could go no further due to white out conditions. Banquet speakers Jeff Grabosky and Alton Pelowski joined Pat in welcoming the bus as it pulled into the base.

After getting stuck four times while traveling on the base, which had lost power by this time, the bus was eventually able to make it to a gas station across the street. Although the bus was parked

less than 100 yards away, the hotel was not visible because of the blizzard. A generous young airman from the base shuttled groups of three or four people and their luggage from the bus to the hotel in his four-wheel drive truck, making his own path through the snow since the roads had disappeared under the rapidly accumulating snow.

“After everyone got settled into their rooms by flashlight, the LIFE Runners met in what became the unofficial retreat center for the weekend, The Cedar Inn Conference Room. Dr. Castle led the group in prayer and emphasized the opportunity to pray, grow closer as a team, and make the most of the opportunity. This is exactly what those thirty-five LIFE Runners did over the next day and a half, conducting three 2-hour plus retreat sessions.

It was, of course, disappointing to realize that our training, planning, and time invested in getting ready for every detail of this LIFE Runners national event would not be utilized the way we expected.

However, it was even more powerful to be reminded that God is always in charge and to witness His awesome power: natural, spiritual, personal. Being “Light” to one another in the darkness of the hotel, sharing all that we had in terms of food and goods, enjoying our military ‘MREs’ (Meals Ready to Eat) on the second night, celebrating Mass at the Cathedral of Rapid City with LIFE Runners from many different Christian backgrounds, and finally, seeing Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse, were highlights the LIFE Runners will never forget.

“The post-blizzard sun on Saturday gave us our first glimpse of the storms power. Cars were completely covered in some areas due to the blowing snow and driving winds. Then came word, ‘the race and other LIFE Runner activities were canceled.’

Those that were in ear-shot of the news teared up.

gan to increase, causing rapid snow melt Saturday afternoon. All of the group said they were so thankful for their time together and felt it was another great LIFE Runners experience. Carl Landwehr said he’d do it all over again.”

The blizzard did not diminish plans for future LIFE Runners’ activities. On Oct. 12, Keelan Glass, 6, raced the Showdown Texas, Half Marathon in 2:46! There was a huge announcement at finish for LIFE Runners. Keelan raised almost $3,000 for a local pregnancy resource center,” Anne reported.

The blue LIFE runners T-shirts bearing the message, “REMEMBER the Unborn Jer: 1.5” have been a familiar sight at many Saint Louis events.

Big River takes over U. City Missouri Running Company “We have big news to share!” Missouri Running Company announced October 18.

“Missouri Running Company, in University City, is becoming a part of the Big River Running Company family. And yes, we are changing our name.”

“We have made a decision that it is time to spend more time with our families and focus on other obligations. But it was important to us that we find a new owner that cares as much about their customers as we do. We are thrilled to introduce our customers to the folks at Big River Running. Big River’s reputation in the St. Louis community is stellar, and, like Missouri Running Company, Big River is an independent, locally-owned running and walking specialty store. The University City site will be their fourth location around the St. Louis metropolitan area.”

Matt Helbig of Big River Running Company expressed excitement about having a store in University City, and respect for Missouri Running Company in his Oct. 22 newsletter.

The store reopened Nov. 2 as Big River Running Company.

“We’re happy to be keeping local ownership. We’re definitely excited,” said Jason Holroyd when a customer came Oct. 26 to share a story.

The Chesterfield store has closed. The store in Cape Girardeau is a franchise, and will continue to operate under the name “Missouri Running Company.”

Let Me Run teaches boys about life, relationships, through running “We inspire boys through the power of running to be courageous enough to be themselves, to build healthy relationships, and to live an active lifestyle,” reads the premise of “Let Me Run.” The organization can be traced to Ashley Armistead, a coach for Girls on the Run in Charlotte, North Carolina. She realized that an equivalent group for her boys did not exist.

“I started taking action when they were in third grade,” she said.

The first Let Me Run club met in the spring of 2008.

The group became incorporated, and achieved 501-C status in 2009. Let Me Run is open to boys in fourth grade through middle school, and coaches may be male or female.

Boys train twice a week for seven weeks, preparing for a 5k race. As of September 2013, Let Me Run Groups existed in 12 states.

Thirty-two potential coaches attended an orientation session in Belleville August 17th; Six teams in Illinois and two in Missouri are now training for 5K races.. National leaders from Charlotte, North Carolina plan to visit Saint Louis next February to conduct training sessions.

“What we’re really hoping to do is just keep growing,” said Byron Goodrich, of Belleville. The principal of Byron’s daughters’ school, Westhaven Elementary School, knew that Byron was a runner, and was interested in forming a boys’ group comparable to Girls on the Run. In January 2013, Byron returned from a coaches’ orientation session in Louisiana enthusiastic. In the spring, Byron organized a program at Westhaven Elementary School. Thirteen boys completed the training and ran the target race, the 5k University City Memorial Day Run. Rachel Simpson, physical education teacher at the Wilson School in Clayton, has seven boys on a team this fall and hopes to have twice as many next fall.

Each boy has set a goal for the Clayton Police 5k.

Girls at The Wilson School had participated in Girls on the Run events, and in the Read, Right and Run Marathon for many years.

“To add a curriculum-based running program for the boys is wonderful,” Rachel said. “Running is such a fantastic lifelong activity. I’m excited for our boys to find endurance and strength they may not have realized they have. Let Me Run has been a blast to be part of, and I look forward to its growth.”

“It’s a great thing. I want to keep spreading the word,” Byron said.

St. Louisans set AG records at Creve Coeur Heart to Heart 5k Two Saint Louisans set state age group records at the Creve Coeur Heart to Heart Run 5k in June, according to record keeper Mike Lundgren. Maurine Lia broke the age group 80-84 5k record at 38:03.

Bobby Williams broke the 60-64 record with his 18:16. Bobby has been on the Saint Louis running scene since the late 1970s, and a member of the Saint Louis Track Club continuously since 2002.

Maurine has been active in the Racewalk Club of Saint Louis.

“She is darned fast,” said racewalker Alison Bourey.

Congratulations to Dottie Gray, 88, who won six gold and two silver medals at The Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah. The Huntsman World Senior Games celebrate “athletes who have reached the golden years” and features group competition, individual events, and “Western” sporting events, against a scenic backdrop.

diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and bone density. The games, open to persons over fifty, celebrated its 25th anniversary this October. Dottie participated in the 50-meter, 100-meter. 200-meter, 400-meter, 800-meter, 1,500-meter, and 3,000-meter track events, and in the 5k road race. She was the only person of any age group to participate in all seven track events. She took second place age group awards in the 50 and 100-meter sprints, and first in all of the other competitions.

“I think the Huntsman Games are some of the best run games. They compare with the Saint Louis Senior Olympics,” Dottie said. “The weather was beautiful. We got beautiful medals. All medals had your name, age group, your time, your town, state, and country, the event, and the date of the event on the back,” Dottie remarked.

Forest Park recognized as ‘crowned jewel’ of Saint Louis Forest Park gained national recognition. On Oct. 4, the American Planning Association, an independent, not-for-profit educational organization that provides leadership in the development of vital communities singled out Forest Park. The commission called Forest Park the “heart” and “crown jewel of St. Louis,” and mentioned its enduring design, myriad cultural institutions, amenities, and 137-year history. The APA noted that the park, which attracts some 13 million visitors annually, completed a $100 million restoration within the last decade, and is the nation’s seventh largest urban park with 1,371 acres, making it 60 percent larger than New York’s Central Park.

“It’s hard to imagine that just 20 years ago, this cultural and historic icon was in an embarrassing state of disrepair,” said APA Chief Executive Officer Paul Farmer. “Forest Park’s restoration is the result of a multi-pronged planning effort – involving residents and public-private partnerships that integrated the Park’s natural, and man-made features.”

“Forest Park is the best urban park in America, and it is getting even better,” said City of Saint Louis’ mayor, Francis G. Slay. “That is a result of a unique public-private partnership between the City, and Forest Park Forever. We are very pleased and proud, but not surprised, by the new designation.”

Forest Park’s selection as the site of the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition thrust it onto the world stage. The Park’s design, by George Kessler, a prominent land-

scape architect, resulted in dramatic changes, including the transformation of wetlands into five connected lakes. The Saint Louis Art Museum, and four other institutions: the zoo, the science center, the history museum and the nation’s largest outdoor amphitheater all call Forest Park home. Decades of deferred maintenance took its toll on the Park. By the 1970s its infrastructure was crumbling. Forest Park Forever, a private, nonprofit organization, was founded in 1986 “to restore, maintain and sustain Forest Park, as one of America’s great urban public parks, for the enjoyment of all — now and forever.” A 1993 master plan, developed by the nonprofit Forest Park Forever and the City of St. Louis, led to creation of a public-private partnership, which raised more than $100 million to restore buildings, landscapes, habitats and roadways. Over the past decade, more than $94 million has been invested.

“We are thrilled that APA has shined its national spotlight on Forest Park,” said Lesley Hoffarth, President and Executive Director of Forest Park Forever. “Our staff, board of directors, members, donors and partners have worked extraordinarily hard in recent decades to restore this essential community treasure for our millions of visitors. While our important work continues — every day, across every acre — we are proud to take this moment to celebrate this meaningful designation.”

“Forest Park is a special place for St. Louis,” said City Parks Director Gary D. Bess. “Everyone has a unique memory of the Park. For some, it’s a place they were married, and for others it’s a visit to the Zoo or playing their first ball game. Due to our unique the relationship with Forest Park Forever, we have been able to transform Forest Park from a special place for St Louis to a special place for the country.” (From American Planning Association Designates Forest Park a Top 10 Great Public Space for 2013. October board meeting summary We had 11 new members and 1 renewal this past month.

•We now have 904 total families, with 2041 being main family member and additional members.

•The membership form and registration has been updated to reflect the rolling membership period. A plan is in place for handling renewals in 2014.

•Board Elections will be held in December. A total of 5 positions will be open •Changes to the Road Series for 2014 are under way, but a new name is still needed.

Several venues have been secured.

•Planning for the annual banquet is under way. A new location was decided on for 2/22/14.

•The website project is nearing completion.

•We will have a booth at the MO Cowbell expo to

promote our upcoming events.

•Hiring security to manage traffic at busy intersections on the Frostbite courses was discussed.

•There was discussion on office hours. Current office hours will be M,W,F 9-1 and the first Thursday of the month from 6-8 p.m., (during Board Meetings).

New options for selling merchandise were also discussed.

•The PAL run is set for 10/11/13.

•The Clifton Heights 3k was held 9/28 with a total of 49 entries.

•Rich Anderson gave an update on the half marathon. Things are on track, but more volunteers are needed.

•Justin gave the Treasurer’s report.

•The next open board meeting and elections will be held Dec. 5 at the Forest Park Visitor’s Center.

SLTC racing team update The Team SLTC competition is fierce, as we have several people into the triple digit race mileage! These members have been racing all year in SLTC jerseys and racking up the points to earn fame and fortune at the end of the year. OK, so it may not be fame and fortune, but we do have some pretty awesome prizes and awards lined up.

All Team SLTC participants will be recognized at our annual banquet in February. There are still two months of 2013 to get in on the action, though Just race in your favorite SLTC shirt, then shoot us an email to tell us about it. It’s that simple.

SLTC events, such as the Marathon Relay and Frostbite Series coming up, count as double points, and these races are a great way to boost your points!

Mark Russell

I’m eager to use my experience I have acquired through my event marketing background to assist in growing the St. Louis Track Club. Marketing and producing outstanding events is a passion of mine, and I strive to give back to the community that has been so supportive of me and my family. I am always looking for ways to keep an organization on the cutting edge and always moving in a forward direction. Leadership is one of my strongest strengths and I strive to always lead by example. I managed promotional tours and special events nationwide for 6 years, developing many skills such as working with volunteer staff, leading hundreds of promotional staff and managing multi-million dollar events. I served as Director of Production for 5 years at St. Louis based experiential marketing agency responsible for all hiring, DOT management, production aspects and contract negotiations and was directly responsible for all permitting, client communication and ensuring events were set up properly. I have produced hundreds of concerts nationwide with full staging, lighting and sound, secured artist contracts and was responsible for all technical and artists riders.

I began running 4 years ago to get healthier and have completed over thirty 5k races, 10+ half marathons, and my first full marathon at the 2013 Little Rock Marathon. In addition to competing in races, I also served as Race Director for the “Holy Hill” section of the Go STL Marathon in 2012, was a sponsored runner for Snickers Marathon Bars (2011 & 2012) and Aquaphor (2013), and volunteered at the GO! STL Marathon in 2010 and 2011.

I have a passion to show people of all ability that you can get out there and complete many things in life that you never thought you could!

Ryan Yoch Back in 1998, a good friend of mine convinced me to run my first marathon for Team in Training. The most I had ever run before was 8 miles in the Army and that was 10 years earlier and very reluctantly. After completing the Grandma’s Marathon on June 19, 1999, I was hooked on this crazy sport. Since then, running has been a very important part of my life. I have enjoyed watching my son (Jon) and daughter (Elena) run cross country in high school and to see them both continue to race after college. My wife, Ilonka, and I have also completed races together, including the Hershey Half Marathon in Hershey, PA, (a must for all people who love chocolate). My running milestones over the past 15 years have included both running Boston last year with my son Jon and completing 50 marathon/ultra distance events before my 50th birthday this past July 30th. During this time, some of the greatest joy of this sport has come from mentoring and coaching first-time runners in completing a 5k, half marathon, and marathon distances. This is truly a sport that allows all of us to give back and encourage others to accomplish things they never imagined. I am looking forward to helping new runners and joining my friends and family out on the roads and trails for another 50 years!

Josh Aranda

I believe that the basis for having a healthy community is having a healthy lifestyle. I love the fact that the SLTC has had a direct impact on this within the St. Louis Community for the last 40 years and I would love to be a part of the continued influence the organization is going to have for the next 40 years. I am a former soccer player turned passionate runner — which, I have my wife to thank for that (she is a stud runner). For the longest time, I thought running served a purpose to chase after a ball, run down a defender, or score a goal, but now I see the true beauty in it and want to share it with everyone!

I currently own my own IT company here in St. Louis that helps nonprofits harness the power of web-based technologies to more effectively achieve their missions. Every day, I strive to alleviate IT burdens for my clients so that they can get back to delivering services to their clients! It is my goal to leverage my technology and business background to help SLTC streamline operations so that they can spend more time and energy on encouraging fitness and healthy lifestyles within the community. The SLTC is an awesome organization, and I would be honored sitting on their board.

Lenny Ramsey

I have been in st Louis for 3 years now, where I’m a neuroscience PhD student at Washington University. I started running about a year and a half ago and fell in love with it. My other main hobbies are rock climbing and aerial silks, but I am hoping to do my first triathlon this summer.

Getting to know the SLTC community during the Frostbite Series was a great experience. Due to an injury I decided to volunteer for the SLTC Half Marathon and started to realize what all is needed to organize a race like this. I love meeting new people and organizing events, especially if I can give back to a community I care about. I would like to be on the board to help the track club grow and move forward!

Brian Kratz

I have been a Track Club member since 1998. I have run four marathons, 25+ half marathons, lots and lots of shorter distance races. I was able to put on a 10K in Mosul, Iraq, in 2004 from everything I had learned from volunteering at SLTC events. I have been retired from the US Army since 2008 and have worked at Boeing for over 15 years. My favorite SLTC event is the Frostbite series, as it gets me out during those cold winter days. I also used the marathon training group to run a 3:28 marathon and qualify for Boston.

Not only do I support the club by participating in numerous club races every year, but I also frequently volunteer at SLTC events. I service the club in a variety of aspects, including directing traffic at races, supervising at packet pick up and even helping clean up after a race. I am dedicated to the benefits of running races, participating as a volunteer, and developing a positive running community in the club. I am enthusiastic and supportive of the track club and its mission.

Mike Orrico

My name is Mike Orrico and running has changed my life. I served on the board for the SLTC for most of 2013. In addition with the help of the SLTC, I created and directed the first annual Corps of Discovery Trail race. Prior to 2013 I served as the race director for the Next Step 5k for a few years. I am very passionate about running and in particular the St. Louis running community. I enjoy running, volunteering, putting on races and just talking with folks who share the same passion. I would like to serve again on the board to keep this great Track Club moving forward.

My wife Erin, 3-year-old son, Luca, and new baby boy, Killian, live in St. Charles, though my friends will say I have a 2nd home at the Forest Park Visitors Center.
