President’s Column

Great volunteers, XC runners honored at banquet The St. Louis Track Club’s 2014 Annual Awards Banquet was a great success. Favazza’s Rose of the Hill proved to be a great venue for the event. I’m sure many names are missing here, so I apologize, but special thanks to Jen Mommens and Rae Mohrmann for organizing, Christy Polk with the Frostbite volunteer list, Anna Jones with the photos, Mark Russell as the emcee, and everyone else who helped make this a special night! A lot of time and effort goes into planning an event like this.

As for the guests of honor, congratulations to all the great athletes and their coaches! To hear the coaches discuss the great accomplishments and stories of their athletes is always the highlight of this event. It’s hard not to be inspired by the effort the student athletes put into not only Cross Country, but also in the classroom and community. I look forward to seeing some of those same underclassman next year! Additionally, it’s great to hear the passion in the voices of the coaches when talking about their student athletes! You not only help develop them as athletes, but also help grow them into great young men and women.

The students were not the only award recipients of the night. The Lifetime Achievement and Volunteer of the Year Awards were announced as well. Congratulations to Gwen Eckelman, the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award and Rae Mohrmann, winner of the Volunteer of the Year Award. Both awards were well deserved; their dedication to the running community cannot be put into words. Gwen has over 33 years of service with the St. Louis Track Club and was

instrumental in helping build the Club into what it is today. We missed Gwen at this wonderful event; she and Tom, her husband, were helping host a 90th birthday party for former Track Club member Leonard Sova, a longtime Track Club volunteer and Race Director. Our Volunteer of the Year recipient, Rae, serves as Co-Race Director of the Marathon Relay, organizes the yearly Picnic, manages the annual volunteer points awards, and assists with the banquet, just to name a few of the things she volunteers for. She’s also a very accomplished runner, running a marathon in all 50 states! On behalf of the Saint Louis Track Club, I want to them both for all they have done!

Lastly, special thanks goes out to all of the Volunteers and Event Directors. Without them, the St. Louis Track Club would not be able to put on the races and wonderful events like the Banquet. Our Race Directors help plan the events, ensuring registration, shirts, awards, sponsors, facilities, and other things are all accounted for. Volunteers give back to the community, donating their time and helping these events often go without a hitch. Please thank the directors and volunteers the next time attending one of these events!

As for the upcoming events, don’t forget to sign up for our new upcoming running series, the Spring through St. Lou park series. The series comprises five races taking place in Queeny, Carondelet, Tower Grove, Rock Springs (O’fallon ,IL), and Creve Coeur parks.

Weather didn’t keep runners down at “Stan Span” opening event Nearly 3,000 runners and walkers inaugurated the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge Saturday morning, Feb. 8.

“Despite temperatures well below freezing, thousands of participants and spectators came out for the once-in-a-lifetime 6K. An overnight dusting of snow required another round of road treatments by the St. Louis Streets Department around 5 a.m. to make the course safe,” said Matt Helbig, of Big River Running Company.

“We would not have missed it,” said Alison Bourey. “There had been snow and ice The plows had come through, so it was not easy to get to the edge of the bridge, to see the bridge from that angle, but still, it was imposing to see how large those seemingly thin strands are that hold up the bridge,” she said. Alison and her husband, Andy, have participated in the opening runs for both sections of I-64, for the Page Ave. extension and for Highway 141.

Sue Turner described the 6K as a once-in-alifetime opportunity. “Everybody seemed to be happy to be out there, in spite of the extreme cold and blustery winds, but I would have preferred weather that encouraged more dawdling time to examine the structure and sight-see the river area. A lot of people showed up. There were six women in the 70-99 age category, and a good crowd for the opening ceremony. When it warms up, I’ll drive across and back,” she said.

The course began near the corner of Tucker and Washington, headed north before working its way across the “Stan Span,” then turned back west from the east side. The first 2,500 finishers

received commemorative medallions featuring the “spectacular addition to the St. Louis skyline.” Overall Male winner was Matt Lawder, time:19:13. Overall Female winner was Crystal Harris, time 22:25.

Storm gives Little Rock marathon runners another challenge: getting home “It was definitely a challenge,” said Charlotte Shelburne, a friend of Rae Mohrmann. She was describing travels to Little Rock, Arkansas, the weekend of March 2, “For those who have never run Little Rock, it is one of the ‘must-run’ races,” Rae said. “Saturday, they had a 5k and several children’s races; Sunday the half, full and 10k. Everyone goes out of the way to make the weekend fun, extending beyond the usual in size and scope. The medals are the biggest you have ever seen; the longer the race, the bigger the medal. They range in size from the bottom of a glass for the 5K to a dinner plate for the marathon, which weighs in at 2.5 lbs.”

Michelob Ultra Runners Rae and Brian Kratz worked at packet pickup Friday. On Saturday, Rae, visited Clinton’s library and the Old State Capitol Museum.

“Saturday’s events went off without a hitch,” she said, “but bad weather was predicted for all of the nation for Sunday. Race start temperature was 54 degrees with rain. While it did not rain for the entire race, the temp continued to drop, the wind picked up, and by the time I was at mile 19, the rain was pouring. The course runs through some residential areas, some downtown, and some along the river. While we were told that they closed the course, we had to keep running

to get back to the start.”

“Every race is different. I have never had these exact conditions. I ran with several layers tied around my waist to add as the temp dropped, but I was still cold at the end when it was 37 degrees. I met a lot of interesting people. I helped a woman finish her first marathon, and gave away a St. Louis Track Club shirt to a young woman who was only wearing a tank top, who was crying and shivering. Lesson here: pay attention to the weather and be prepared.”

Rae’s friend Charlotte gave details about the challenges of the return trip. Rae, Charlotte, and driver Ron changed reservations in Sikeston for reservations in Blytheville on learning about bad weather ahead. Although they arrived at the hotel 10 minutes late, the room had been held, as there were so many people stopping. Several cars and trucks were stuck in the ditches. Many motels and hotels sold out.

“The power went out around 4 a.m.,” Charlotte said. “Up and moving about 6:30; cold breakfast. It took over an hour to de-ice the car. Then, the wheels were iced in, too. Several men that were tree trimmers pushed us out; we were on the road 9 a.m. Icy, snow-packed roads, singlefile many times. It was about 12 degrees, and we made it to Cape Girardeau by noon, mostly at 35 to 40 mph; many trucks and cars in the ditch. We had good, clear highways the rest of the way at 60 to 70 mph and got into Ferguson by 2 p.m. and home before 3 p.m.”

A contingency of Michelob Ultra Runners and their friends braved the conditions including, Patty Jansen, Pam Campbell Angie Sabol, Barbie Ambuhl, Lisa Fowler, Ron Golan, Brian Kratz, Denis McCarthy, Jorge Garcia, Jodi Tow, and Brian VanHorn. Pam Campbell took first place in her age group for the half marathon; Angie Sabol took third, and Rae was second in her age group for the for full marathon.

“What a weekend! Friendship and fellowship,” Charlotte commented.

Ralph Brindley crowned King of Valentine’s Day at Fleur Heights center

SLTC’s Ralph Brindley was voted King of Valentine’s Day at Fleur Heights Wellness and Rehabilitation Center in Des Moines, Iowa this year.

“The whole nursing home voted for a king and queen, and he won for king,” reported his daughter, Beverly Harcourt.” At first he didn’t want to show up, but changed his mind with a little persuading. He didn’t have a red shirt, so he had to borrow my husband’s jacket, but looked great. He was worried about giving a speech but he didn’t have to do anything but sit there and look regal, which he did.”

Beverly appreciates everyone’s cards, phone calls, and good wishes for Ralph. “He always tells me what good friends he had in St. Louis and how much he misses all of you,” she said.

Ralph was SLTC’s Volunteer of the Year in 2003.

Servis 1st Bank First Light Half Marathon provides unique medals to finishers Nancy Sido gave a report from the Servis 1st Bank First Light Half Marathon Jan. 12 in Mobile, Ala. She and her husband, Lee Hoffman, walked the half-marathon.

“Although Mobile experienced some of the bitter cold we have had in St. Louis, we lucked out on race day with perfect weather conditions. The half marathon route was as flat as we have ever experienced and took us through some gorgeous residential areas with

huge historic homes. It was very well organized. The entry fee included a shirt, pre-race pasta dinner and post-race meal,” Nancy said.

“This marathon and half marathon are organized by L’Arche Mobile, part of an international federation of communities in which people with intellectual disabilities and those who help them can live, work, and share their lives together. The most unique feature of these races is that each medal and plaque is handmade by a member of the L’Arche Mobile community. The back of each plaque includes information about the artist who made it. We were fortunate to win Age Group and Racewalk division plaques and treasure the original artworks that were so proudly made by people who benefited from our participation.”

Barb and Vern Pumm keep with tradition at Midnight Madness 3-miler Barbara and Vernon Pumm spent their winter in warm Phoenix, Ariz. Per tradition, they participated in the Phoenix Midnight Madness 3-mile run at 10:30 p.m. Dec. 31. They reported their annual sighting of Myron Norton, a longtime Saint Louisan who relocated to Phoenix.

“The race was well attended, with 322 runners and 62 walkers,” Vern said. “Myron and Barbara both finished first in their age groups.”

Cornbread, sparkling cider, and a toast at midnight concluded the event. Best wishes for warm weather as Barb and Vern settle back into Saint Louis.

What should I drink after a long run?

Q: Hey Styles, should I drink water, Gatorade or go right to Stag after a 20-miler? - Matt G. A: That is a great question Matt. It’s not Styles personal preference to drink Stag, but if you must here’s what he’d do: Styles would confiscate his son’s chocolate milk first, hammer down the Gatorade, and then enjoy the cold beer.

After a 20-miler your, body probably would welcome the other 2 first. Then, when ready, put your feet up and enjoy… even if it must be Stag.

Meet our new president, Mike Huelsmann!

Best wishes to Mike Huelsmann as he begins his term as Saint Louis Track Club President.

“I wasn’t always a runner,” he said. “I grew up playing football and baseball. Distance running was always punishment for those sports, usually if you messed up as a team! As I grew older, I needed a new hobby/addiction, so, I started running about seven or eight years ago. Initially, most racing included the Frostbite Series and half marathons. In 2010, some friends and I went to Chicago to watch our buddy Mike Orrico, (now) another board member, run the Chicago marathon. I caught the true distance running bug watching the event that day, and one year later, I ran my first marathon, in Chicago. I’ve since run a number of half marathon and full marathons, but more importantly, I’ve been able to develop numerous friendships spending time running miles on the streets with great people. I enjoy hanging out with runners. Many of them are competitive, and also give back to their community.”

“One of my favorite running experiences was last November when I was able to complete the New York City Marathon,” Mike said. “Only a few cities like New York could put on a race of that magnitude (over 50k finishers) and pull it off flawlessly.

Currently, I’m training for the Illinois Marathon in Champaign, the last weekend in April. I’ll be running the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Run and the Go! St. Louis Half Marathon as tune up races.

I enjoy running with my friends, particularly when training for the same race -- there are a few friends running the Illinois Marathon! I can be found at Forest Park a couple times a week meeting up with others. After the spring races, I’ll likely just be joining others for some ‘friendly’ miles. With a baby on the way, I do not plan to commit to any fall races.”

“Interesting note - I’ve signed up for seven marathons but have only run five. Two of them were canceled - New York in 2012 (Hurricane Sandy) and the St. Jude Marathon in Memphis (winter ice storm). Both races definitely should have been canceled

due to the conditions. But, word of caution, you’re taking a risk if you sign up for a marathon that I’m also signed up for!”

“On a personal level, I married in September of 2012 and we are expecting our first baby in August. We couldn’t be more excited!

I’m sure I will have to be more creative in making time to get my miles in once the baby is here! Aside from running, I enjoy most sports, including Cardinal baseball and SLU Billiken basketball, reading, and technology. Additionally, I enjoy the occasional local craft brew.”

“My interest in serving on the SLTC Board includes a number of reasons. One is that growing the membership of the SLTC is a great way to promote a fit community. Not everyone comes to the table with the same capabilities, and people want to be part of something where they feel safe and can relate to others. The first part of the SLTC’s Mission Statement, “The Saint Louis Track Club encourages running, walking, and fitness for persons of all ages and abilities,” does an excellent job of being inclusive of all levels, which I feel is important. Second, the SLTC has the ability to affect the community. Runners tend to be an unselfish, giving group. Many running events are organized for charities and require a number of volunteers to execute a successful race. Being an SLTC member not only benefits the individual as a runner, but also provides a means for the runner to give back by volunteering and promoting local races. Since I started running, I’ve been amazed at the number of volunteers who continue to give their time year after year. I see some of the same faces volunteering now that I did when I was running my first Frostbite races when I was barely a runner! Third, and lastly, there are significant opportunities for the SLTC to partner with various organizations and businesses around St. Louis. The SLTC and Saint Louis businesses are already doing great things in the community. Partnering with businesses that have the same vision and values could allow both to make a greater impact in the community. Many members and potential members work at these businesses, and getting them involved could help grow sponsorships of various races put on by the SLTC, many of which donate to charitable foundations.”

February summary of minutes •January Membership: 7 new members; 180 renewals; 682 household memberships.

•USATF Updates- The possibility of bidding for a 10k/10-mile championship race was discussed.

•Preparations for the annual banquet and cross country teams were reviewed.

•Updates on the Frostbite Series were made including options for a post-event survey.

•Community Events: The board decided to sponsor the Elite Men’s Mile at the Festival of Miles again for 2014. Let Me Run and Girls on the Run were also discussed •Upcoming Races: Spring Through St. Lou is the next event. The

process for getting regular updates from all race directors was discussed. Timing bids are being accepted for 2014 events. Applications for the St. Louis Half Marathon will also be accepted.

•Options for the March open board meeting were discussed. Advertising options we also looked at.

•Goals for the board were discussed. Increase membership, increase race participation, improve benefits of membership, and community impact were included. It was agreed these goals should be considered for all decisions. •The treasurer’s report was delivered. New content for the newsletter was also discussed.

SLTC racing team off to a great start! Join us!

2014 is off to a great start for Team SLTC! We already have some new faces joining us this year, and hopefully there will be more to come with the spring race season just getting started. There are many opportunities (such as Spring Through St. Lou!) to get out and complete a race wearing your favorite SLTC jersey. When you do, just send us an email at office@stlouistrackclub. com with the race name, date, and distance to be counted in the standings.

We were happy to award all 2013 Team SLTC participants with a free-limited edition tech tee. These went out to anyone who reported racing in St. Louis Track Club gear! Plaques as well and gift cards to local running stores were also presented to the top mileage earners in 2013 at the annual awards banquet on Feb. 22. We hope to see more members up on the stage in 2014!
