President’s Column

Join us for an event-filled June!

St. Louis Track Club Members, Thanks to everyone who came out and participated in the Road Series this spring. A big thank you to all of the volunteers who made this series possible. A shout out to race director Ian Hardin; Jen Mommens, who helped coordinate and set up the timing equipment; Oz Harper for the water stop, and Randy Hill, Michael and Tony Bahr, and Paul McGee for course set up and pick-up. Congrats to all the age group award winners.

Our annual Track Series will kick off at Clayton’s Gay Track Field with the first race, the 3K on June 4. Come out to test your speed on the track. The series is a great family event with the short distances. Bring your little runners to burn off some of their energy on the track before the race. There is a youth run prior to the race. The Track Series is every Tuesday through July 2.

Celebrate National Running Day on June 5 by joining other Track Club members for the kickoff of our Pace Series. Registration takes place in the Forest Park Visitors Center. Walkers start at 6pm; runners start at 6:15pm.

Thursday, June 6 is our quarterly open Board meeting at Forest Park Visitor Center. Come out

and meet the Board of Directors and other St. Louis Track Club members. Everyone is welcome. We will have a short business meeting with updates from our race directors followed by featured speaker Jim Hixson. Jim will enlighten us on minimal shoes. I hear he will be doing demos on the patio.

The St. Louis Track Club is excited about the return of our Half Marathon training program. We will again be partnering with Sports Medicine and Training Center to provide a complete training to include a cross-training program designed to work with weekly run progression.

Not ready for the half marathon distance? No problem. New this year, we are introducing a 5K training program.

Both training programs start in August to prepare you for your most awesome, amazing performance at the St. Louis Track Club Half Marathon and 5K on November 3, 2013. Event entry is included in the training fee. These programs are for beginning runners and walkers and experienced racers wanting to reach the next level.

AWARDS Ribbons will be given at each race to the top five finishers in the following age groups: 7 & under; 8-9; 10-13; 14-19; 5-year age groups 20-69, and 70-79, 80 & over. **All youth 9 and under have the option to run 400 meters at each event.

Road Warriors’ numbers grow around the globe “Our roster now lists 1,977 names,” reported Brian Trout in his most recent Road Warriors update.

“Our home chapter Facebook page has 1,085 members. We have added two new chapters – Germany and Italy – each with over 30 members. We are in eight countries, plus Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. We are in 41 states, plus D.C.” “Remember, one of my longstanding rules is that if you are a Road Warrior, anyone in your family that is accomplishing fitness-related activities is a Road Warrior. We are out front leading ourselves and the community back into fitness.”

“It is hard to pick out individuals to highlight,” Brian said, “but I saw one that really epitomizes what groups like the Road Warriors, St. Louis Track Club, Fleet Feet, etc., do for the fitness of communities all over. Johna Edwards, a Road Warrior in North Dakota, ran the Fargo half marathon May 18.”

“Well, I did it. I finished my first half marathon. I believe I was the second to last and I couldn’t be happier. It’s not about beating a time or besting someone else. It was to prove to myself I could do it. I fully plan on coming back next year. I have a year to train and work on myself. If I make it just a minute faster, then I will be happy. It’s about improving myself and my life. Thanks for all the support. You all helped me,” Johna said. “When I was at about mile 10, a woman who was about my size reached for my hand and told me ‘thank you.’ She told me I was an inspiration to her – that she was going to sign up for next year’s marathon. I saw her again at the finish line and she was crying. That’s when I lost it – I was crying for me and for her, because I know how hard it is to believe in yourself sometimes. When you are my size, sometimes you feel like you don’t

know where to start on getting healthy. When you hear people doubting and putting you down most of your life, it’s hard to pick yourself up. But I did it, and I hope she will too. Thanks again for all the support. I don’t think I could have without your support and help. Thanks for helping me to start believing in myself. I am a Road Warrior now!”

The Road Runners originated in 2005 when Brian Trout, of Scott Air Force Base, began training for a marathon. He solicited some company for his training, and the group grew in numbers, year by year. Their characteristic purple and black shirt was designed by the group’s members and has special meaning behind it. The camouflage design stemmed from the group’s military background as most of the members have some sort of military affiliation.

The purple hue represents the unity of all service and civilian members of the group. Black represents those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to America. The POW/MIA logo on the back of the shirt serves as a reminder that not everyone is accounted for and “we must never forget.”

St. Louis Sports Commission selected as national standout The National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) selected the St. Louis Sports Commission as its 2013 Member of the Year.

Having previously won the award in 2002 and 2005, the St. Louis Sports Commission joins the Richmond (Va.) Sports Backers as the only three-time recipients of the honor. The Sports Commission of the Year award recognizes the NASC member that has the most outstanding impact on its local community through sporting events, community events and economic impact.

The St. Louis Sports Commission has been networking with the Saint Louis Track Club to promote running and walking activities in Saint Louis.

Next month, the Sports Commission is also partnering with Fair Saint Louis to produce the Freedom 4 Miler & Family Fun Run – presented by Schnucks on Thursday, July 4. This is the 2nd annual Freedom 4 Miler, which takes place immediately prior to the Veiled Prophet Parade in Downtown St. Louis. The Track Club previously put on a 4th of July Run in Downtown St. Louis. To register or for more information on the races, visit www.fairsaintlouis.org.

In February, the Sports Commission partnered with the region’s running community (including the Saint Louis Track Club) to produce the 2013 USA Cross Country Championships in Forest Park.

Representative Saint Louis Track Club members have been attending meetings, and share the objectives of boosting Saint Louis by promoting a diversity of sports.

The St. Louis Sports Commission is a privatelyfunded nonprofit organization, striving to use the power of sports to enhance the region’s quality of life and generate economic and social benefit for St. Louis.

SLTC members reconnect at Mini-Indy 500 half marathon Arnold (“Arnie”) Mueller was part of a contingency of Saint Louisans who completed the Mini-Indy 500 (Half) Marathon May 4. While in Indianapolis, he saw Hank Kiesel, an active Saint Louis Track Club member who relocated. Hank gave Arnie some 1980s era pictures, including one of a session of “Adopt a Highway,” (see page 8) a former SLTC activity.

Arnie described the half-marathon as “a real fun race,” and noted that the course included twoand-a-half miles of the INDY-500 track.

50-state marathoners make the rounds at events across the U.S. Fifty-state marathon walker Lee Hoffman returned to The Road Series this May looking fresh after the Long Island Half-marathon, (May 5, Uniondale, Nassau County). He described a new trend to his racing.

“After years of racing, but never with a relative, Stan Johnson, a nephew from Long Island, New York, proposed that we do the half marathon together. I jumped at the opportunity, and I cannot remember ever having so much fun doing a race.

We were not fast, but we did complete the race – Stan’s first half marathon. My wife, Nancy Sido, could not join us as she was sidelined with a stress fracture. Now, I have nieces in Colorado and Florida who seem willing to do a race with me. I hope that I have started a trend,” he said.

Fifty-state half-marathoner George Pugh reported that he’s “back at it.” May 12 he completed the Mother’s Day YMCA Half-marathon in Marysville, Illinois.” Great weather, great course, great friends,” he commented about the race.

added another marathon, the Kentucky Derby Marathon, and brought a report.

“Heavy rain was predicted but it did not rain during the race. About 2,000 in the full, 12,500 in half. Nice race – have run it before. Truly, these get more difficult with age! I took a first in age.

There was a horse at the track named ‘Flashy Rae,’ and she took a first place too!”

“We later went to Churchill Downs to the opening night of the track and Derby Festival. It was fun to see all of the hats and fancy dresses. We didn’t think they did that except for the Derby.”

Team SLTC makes great showing at U City Memorial Run

W

hile a little warm, Memorial Day was a great day for a race and Team SLTC event! We quite a few people stopped by the tent at the U City Memorial Run, even some who had a celebratory beer!

Some track club members won medals in their age group, including Sean Gannon and Tim Van Rhein, who finished 1-2 in their age group.

The current Team SLTC standings are posted on the website. To be included, all you need to do is race in a SLTC jersey and send an email to office@stlouistrackclub.comwith the following information-. Please include: 1) Your name, 2) Event name, 3) Distance you completed, 4)

Date, 5) Link to event/results website. Photos are also encouraged. Remembers, St. Louis Track Club events count for double points if you race or volunteer!

Member profile: Jon Yoch

Age: Jon Yoch 24 Born: Born in Weisbaden, Germany. Raised in O’Fallon, Ill. Occupation: High School Math Teacher Family: Married to Alisha Abbott. Father-Ryan Yoch, Mother-Ilonka Yoch, Sister-Elena Yoch Why’d you start running: My dad got my into running at an early age. I really started to love the sport in junior high.

Running since: I started really competing in the 7th grade.

When did you join SLTC?: Just joined after a long hiatus.

How did you learn about SLTC: First started to learn of it through the 2002 Frostbite Series.

Mileage: 55 to 60 the past few months.

Favorite place to run: Running in Forest Park is always a great time; I love the Madison County Trails by my house.

Shoes: Asics rocks!

Equipment: I love my Garmin and iPod shuffle!

Food: Brown rice and beans from Crazy Bowls iPod: A lot of U2, some newer stuff like Mumford & Sons, the Lumineers, and Muse.

Proudest performance: Running 2:53 in Boston this year has obviously been very bittersweet after the bombings, but I never thought I would achieve that time, and when I crossed the finish line, I was overwhelmed with joy.

Favorite SLTC events: The Frostbite Series and the Track Club Half Marathon.

What do you like about SLTC?: The SLTC hosts very quality events.

Favorite restaurant: Ruby Tuesday’s and Sweet Tomatoes.

Favorite movie: Without Limits Favorite book: I recently have really enjoyed “Born to Run” and “Unbroken”.

What else should club members know?: I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease 6 years ago, needed surgery last summer, and I have been very dedicated in overhauling my diet and lifestyle. I truly feel great and hope to continue to kick Crohn’s butt!

Learn about shoe styles at the open board meeting!

Although there has been a growing acceptance of minimal running shoes in the last several years, their use is still controversial. On the one side are supporters who claim that minimal shoes fit the anatomy and function of the foot and encourage a more natural style of running.

On the other side are detractors who claim just as strongly that a runner needs shoes with extra cushioning and support to reduce the stress and strain caused by the impact of running. Although each side has justifiable claims and concerns, the two types of shoes are so different from each other that only one can justifiably claim to encour-

age natural running, that is to say, running based upon sound principles of biomechanics.

Do minimal shoes successfully answer the concerns of their critics, or are traditional shoes still the best option for runners?

Jim Hixson, who has worked at running stores for more than 15 years and is a certified personal trainer, will attempt to answer this question during a Q&A session and demonstration at the open board meeting on June 6 at the Forest Park Visitors’ Center. Join us at 6:30 p.m. for the discussion!

Let us train you for your first, or best, half marathon or 5k!

The St. Louis Track Club is teaming up with the Sports Medicine and Training Center to present the second annual St. Louis Half Marathon training program! The 12week program will have you ready on race day to run your first half marathon or achieve a PR! The training program is open to anyone – walkers and runners – and provides a great training opportunity for both beginners and seasoned runners and walkers. Included in the program are: a 12-week run progression, a weekly long run opportunity (different pace groups available), and an optional 12-week, progressive resistance training program written and held by SMTC’s endurance coaches at their Crestwood facility.

New this year, we are offering Out of the Blocks, a beginners’-oriented couch-to-5k program designed to get you running or walking to your first 5k (or a PR!) and a healthy lifestyle. Program participants will receive the same benefits as the half program in the form of a 10-week plan.

The goal race will be the Clayton Police 5k run in conjunction with the St. Louis Half Marathon.

Orientation for the half program will be the week of Aug. 12, 2013, at SMTC’s Crestwood location, time/date TBA. Orientation for the 5k program will be the week of Aug. 26. Weekly group runs will be Sundays at 7 a.m. in Forest Park. Race day is Sunday, November 3, 2013, in Clayton, and your race entry is INCLUDED in the program fee. The half marathon program is $75 for members and $115 for nonmembers; the 5k program is $60 for members and $100 for nonmembers.

Registration for both training programs will open at the GO! St. Louis expo on June 5 and 6. We will have SMTC representatives and program alum available at the race booth to answer questions and provide details on the experience.

We will even have a special giveaway for anyone who registers at our booth at the GO! St. Louis expo!

The Sunday morning group runs are lead by volunteers, and we are looking for leaders for various pace groups.

KEEP MOVING FORWARD with a SMILE: Brad Eastman Style

by Wendie Cummings --“I really hate that I can’t run. It’s awful being at a running event knowing I’m not allowed to run. I’ve been doing fine physically, but I’ve been frustrated lately,” Brad revealed to me when I asked him how he was doing before the Festival of Miles track meet. For the first time since he learned of the baseball-sized brain tumor, I heard him utter something that revealed that he’s human and not always optimistic. Ninety nine percent of the time, however, he is optimistic and sets an example for everyone who meets him.

The Festival of Miles began on May 30 at the Saint Louis University High School track with ominous clouds hovering in the sky. A strong thunderstorm hit right after the first race. Crowds ran for shelter and waited out the torrential rains and strong winds. Shortly after the storm passed, Brad and Sarah Eastman were introduced as the athletes in need, and a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky as Brad was speaking to the crowd about his experience and gratitude. The track meet continued, featuring races for kids, corporate relay teams, masters elite runners, high school sprinters and milers, and some of the best professional runners in the U.S. for the mile and the 800-meter distance. The first time I met Sarah was in 2008, and she and Brad Eastman were not yet married. I was reaching out to find some fast female runners for our River to River relay team. Sarah’s name came up, I emailed her, and she agreed to join the team.

When you’re stuck in a van all day long with runners in a relay race, you tend to get to know your teammates rather well, and Sarah and I became fast friends. We bonded well because we both teach in the Ferguson-Florissant School District. She teaches middle school art, I teach elementary school band, and we both care deeply about making a difference for our students not only in our subject area, but also as lifelong, high-achieving members of society.

After the relay race, Sarah and I have continued to run together and talk about life’s ups and downs. If you know me well, you are aware that I will try to enlist you as a volunteer or coach for Girls on the Run because the mission of the program is near and dear to my heart. I convinced Sarah to get involved in Girls on the Run, despite her busy schedule.

Soon after, Sarah and Brad both signed up volunteer for the 2009 Girls on the Run 5K race in Forest Park. At this time, Brad invented the best volunteer job ever: FINISH LINE MOTIVATOR. This entails running the race, then heading backwards on the course countless times through the crowd searching for runners who might need that extra boost to finish

strong, finish with a smile, or FINISH AT ALL. He and Sarah ran together and encouraged many young runners that morning.

After that first race, I convinced Sarah to coach with me at Griffith Elementary. She then brought Girls on Track to the middle school where she teaches, and Brad continues to be a finish line motivator after all these years.

The Girls on the Run 5K is not as much a race as it is a celebration for each girl enrolled in the 10-week after school character building program. Volunteer coaches guide teams of third- through eighthgrade girls through a curriculum that encourages girls to celebrate everyone’s unique qualities, learn healthy habits, practice how to be assertive, serve in the community, and be to be brave, strong, and happy.

The focus is not on running fast, unless a girl on the team wants to run fast. At the 5K, you will see fast finish times by many of the girls, but the average 5K finish time is about 45 minutes. He makes sure the very last place runner crosses the finish line with a smile, a lesson learned and a sense of accomplishment. Since 2009, Brad has been a finish line motivator for every single GOTR 5K, and I have witnessed the amazing encouragement that he gives to many children in the program, including my own students at Griffith Elementary in the Ferguson-Florissant School District.

Sarah and Brad have celebrated many milestones in their life together; they married in 2009, they trained for and placed well in many races, including IRONMAN triathlons, then their daughter Julianna was born in the spring of 2012. This spring, their lives changed profoundly. Sarah

A few days later, she let me know that Brad was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Sarah was calm and composed as she delivered the facts, and I crumpled to the floor in tears. Didn’t Brad just run a smoking fast personal best time in the Disney Marathon? How could someone as strong, healthy and kind as Brad have such a devastating health crisis all of a sudden? I wasn’t sure what I could do to ease their burden, but I offered anyway.

May board meeting summary St. Louis Track Club Board Meeting 5/02/2013 Summary of Minutes Membership stands at 26 new members and a 18 renewals for the month, totaling 808 household memberships and 1,572 individuals.

Treasurer’s Report: New policies for using our PayPal account were discussed. The process of consolidating the clubs bank accounts is underway. Race budgets were reviewed and these will be shared with race directors. Directors will also be asked to attend open board meetings to give an update on their events. The club made a donation to One Fund Boston. Christy will be preparing taxes due on May 15.

The website redesign project with Ready and Willing is underway. We have discussed our needs with them and are awaiting their plan. The board discussed options for a database and race management to be included in the scope of the project.

•Mike H. has been working with Rich Anderson at USATF regarding options for sanctioning and championship designations. There is a USATF annual meeting in Indianapolis every December, which might be of interest.

•Jen met with Katy Sommer from GOTR and collaboration for marketing events is beginning.

The Road Series is in progress and going smoothly.

•The club picnic is June 2 at Creve Coeur Park and Rae Mohrman is again coordinating this event.

•The Volunteer Thank-You Picnic will be at the Visitors’ Center on August 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. There

was some discussion involving combining the 2 events.

Races •The Track Series will begin June 4 with David James as the director. This will be marketed in conjunction with the Cross Country Kickoff, particularly to student athletes. The Cross Country Kickoff is August 3, and the Race Director is Shelly Kannel.

Volunteers are needed for both events.

•The Pace Series begins June 5 with Don Denham as director. He continues to manage the budget and keeping it running smoothly.

•The I Love Forest Park 5K is Sept. 7.

SLTC will assist Forest Park Forever with planning, promotion and volunteers.

•Next Step is not interested in continuing their 5K. Plans for a replacement event are in the works.

•The PAL Run has a new director, and they’ve changed their event to a night run on Oct. 11.

SLTC will assist with planning, promotion and volunteers.

•The St. Louis Half Marathon is Nov. 3, and the Race Director is Steve Mrotek. Medals and shirts are to be ordered. The competition from similar races was discussed along with ideas for collaboration and cross-promoting with these events.

Moving the race to the spring for 2014 and a price change were also discussed.

The next open board meeting will be June 6 with Jim Hixson as the speaker. Speakers for upcoming meetings were reviewed.
