President’s Column

Welcome our new and returning board members St. Louis Track Club Members, Greetings, I’m Mike Huelsmann, the new president of the St. Louis Track Club. It has been an honor to serve on the Board in 2013, and I look forward to serving as president this upcoming year. On behalf the SLTC, we would like to thank Pam Mosca, David White, Dan Stone, and Gwen Eckelman for their years of service! Because of them, we are able to continue promoting fitness through running and walking in the St. Louis Community. Additionally, I’d like to congratulate Josh Aranda, Brian Kratz, Mark Russell (vice president), and Ryan Yoch as incoming board members, joining Wendie Cummings, Jill Finklang, Mike Orrico, and me. The Board, along with Executive Director Jen Mommens, Treasurer Justin Kupferschmidt, and Secretary Lenny Ramsey, is looking forward to continuing the great annual events put on by the SLTC over the years, as well as promoting some new social gatherings with the members!

January has come to a close, and that means we’ve completed successful SLTC Frostbite Series!

Despite a challenging winter of cold temperatures, wintry precipitation, and windy conditions, runners have still come out in numbers to participate in the series. Congratulations to all the Finishers and Award Winners. We would like to give special thanks to our partners Autism Speaks and True

Runner, as well as all of the volunteers who dedicated their time to allow us to put on the Frostbite Series. Please thank the partners and volunteers when picking up your bibs, at the water stops, or on the route! Lastly, thanks to the race directors Brian Carter and Bob Chitwood, who have once again done an excellent job managing the series and coordination of all aspects of the series races.

They are a big part of why the series has been such a success!

In the upcoming months, we look forward to some exciting events. On February 22nd, the St. Louis Track Club will honor the High School AllMetro Cross Country Teams, SLTC Volunteer of the Year, SLTC Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Team SLTC award winners, and other dedicated volunteers at the SLTC Annual Awards Banquet taking place at Favazza’s Rose of the Hill. On Thursday, March 6th, we look forward to our first open Board Meeting of 2014 with the new board.

Stay tuned for details on the meeting; we promise to make it a fun, social event! Please check the website for details on attending or volunteering at these events.

Matt McCord finds passion, chance to serve with running “Matt McCord has a Passion for Running,” read a headline in the Webster-Kirkwood Times on Dec. 13. Matt completed the New York Marathon accompanied by two members of Achilles International, which helps individuals with disabilities participate in mainstream athletic events. Jaime Mowers interviewed Matt and his mother, Denise Walker.

Autism did not prevent Matt from participating in cross country running at Webster Groves High School, from which he graduated in 2012. Post-graduation running included the Chicago marathon, the Disneyland Half-marathon, and the New York Marathon. He has been a member of the Saint Louis Track Club since January of 2012.

“Matt is taking a break from marathons, but has been working out all the time,” said his mother, Denise Walker. She said that running and his involvement in the Track Club have helped Matt to grow and to develop.

“Running has empowered him,” she said.

SLTC adopting new technology for forward progress “It’s good to see the club move forward with new technology,” said the Saint Louis Track Club’s Executive Director, Jen Mommens.

Many Saint Louis Track Club members have noticed changes to registration procedures and to volunteer sign-ups during the past year. The new process for volunteer registra-

tion began with November’s half-marathon.

Volunteers can use a computerized form to view open positions and choose times and locations. That information was entered into a data base, helping Christy Polk, the event’s volunteer coordinator, achieve smooth race day proceedings. Race registration has been simplified by consolidating to one service provider with low processing fees.

As of March, 2013, The Track Time News became electronic. “It’s not only greener, but saves a lot of expense in terms of printing and postage.” Jen said. Additional advantages include more, and higher quality, color photographs, and shorter lead times between due dates and publication for contributors and readers, which helps the publication be more current.

The Saint Louis Track Club website is in the process of being updated. The club has partnered with another local nonprofit, Ready+Willing, that provides pro bono marketing and advertising assistance for other 501(c)3 organizations in the area. With their help, the club plans to launch the redesigned website in the spring with many benefits for members, volunteers, race participants, and anyone looking to learn more about our organization.

“I think (the new technology) will help us keep up to date,” Jen commented. “The club should be evolving if we hope to continue to grow.”

Sophisticated timing machine adds features to race results Frostbite Series race No. 4 saw a new piece of equipment. FLEET FEET Sports lent The Saint Louis Track Club a finish line camera, with new features.

“We’re actually beta testing a new feature with our Jaguar Timing System,” said Jake Goldsborough, Director of Race Productions for FLEET FEET Sports.

“It captures photos of participants as they finish, and their chip times are read. Once the picture is taken, the photo is instantly uploaded to the individual online results page, so that the runners can view their finish photos on the results page.”

“The feature is coming along, though it is not yet perfected. We are providing feedback to Innovative Timing Systems, who builds Jaguar. They are planning on new logic, in the software’s logic, to get more pictures of participants, which will increase the likelihood of a quality photo, and of taking photos in a crowd.

It will also be able to upload the photos to the web results, and to allow participants to view their photos from the results page on the IT’S Your Race mobile app. It’s a very exciting feature that we hope to see used at many of our races.”

“It was very cold when we started. We discussed shortening the walk but the weather got better as we went along. We ended up doing the whole 6 miles. Andy, Marcia, Gerardette, and I had brunch at the Southwest Diner, and when we left the restaurant, it was snowing up a storm,” Margy said.

Herschel Asner leaves legacy after battle with cancer

Herschel Asner, a member of the Saint Louis Track Club during its formative years, passed away December 20, 2013, after a long battle with cancer. During Hershel’s 86 years, he was a paratrooper in World War II, a pharmacist for 50+ years, a strong supporter of Pathways to Independence, a marathoner, an avid bicyclist, and he enjoyed and taught orienteering. He competed at Senior Olympic cycling events during his 80s, despite having cancer. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, and by his three sons, Avi, Joseph, and Nesher, and their families. St. Louis Track Club ST. LOUIS TRACK CLUB NAMES 2013 ALL-METRO HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY TEAM

For the 21st year, the St. Louis Track Club will honor the All-Metro High School Cross Country Teams at the SLTC Annual Awards Banquet, to be held Saturday, February 22, at Favazza’s Rose of the Hill, 2300 Edwards, St. Louis, MO 63110.

This year, the panel of coaches again selected honorees for a first team and second team, as well as honorable mentions. Each honoree will receive a plaque commemorating their selection.

The 2013 Girls First Team includes two juniors who are three-time selections in Eureka’s Hannah Long, who broke the Missouri 4A state record in November, and Nerinx Hall’s Sophia Racette. Lafayette sophomore Sara Nicholson is a two-time selection, and Cor Jesu’s Jill Whitman and Parkway West’s Maddy Brown, who finished Nos. 2 and 3 at the Missouri 4A state meet, join the first team after being second-team selections last year.

Leading the Boys First Team are two three-time selections in O’Fallon (IL) High’s Patrick Perrier, the Illinois 3A champion, and Marquette’s Noah Kauppila, the Missouri 4A champion.

Dorrian Gordan, of O’Fallon (IL), joins the first team after making the second team last year.

DeSmet’s Austin Del Rosso returns to the first team for a second straight year, and Festus’ Tyler Gilliam won the Missouri 3A title and helped his team place second overall.

See STL from a different point of view with a running tour

Modeled after some of the best running tours around the world, St. Louis Running Tour launched last month operating tours on a weekly basis every Saturday and Sunday morning in downtown St. Louis. This spot on the Mississippi River has played a critical role in the early development of this country with an impact reaching around the world, and literally, into outer space. The year 2014 marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the settlement of St. Louis by Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau (that’s right, it wasn’t Lewis and Clark) with activities celebrating this milestone scheduled throughout the year by various groups in the area.

The 4.5-mile tour begins and ends in the central part of downtown St. Louis and starts at 8 a.m. Most tours take an hour and a half to two hours. The pace is easy with a few stops along

the way. For $30 per person, participants receive an official St. Louis Running Tour T-shirt, a post-run drink, and most importantly, a safe and fun guided tour around some of the most interesting parts of St. Louis. All the details you need can be found at www.stlrunningtour.com.

Along with the weekly tours, personalized tours are already being scheduled for groups large and small.

Currently, dates are set for tours through the end of April, with a summer schedule to be posted by the end of February.

Team SLTC is off to a great start for 2014 and reports of races and volunteering are coming in. Don’t forget that volunteering at an SLTC event counts the same as running it! Just email office@stlouistrackclub.com when you complete any race in SLTC gear to start racking up points.

We have some great prizes and awards for 2013 Team SLTC participants, including a limited-edition T-shirt and gift cards. Each participant will be presented with their prize at the banquet on Feb. 22.

January board meeting summary Jill Finklang and Jen Mommens presented an informative slideshow that describes how we function as a board, demographics of members, some financial information, and the SLTC’s mission statement to help orient new board members.

Ideas for appealing to new members were discussed.

The President (Mike Huelsmann) and Vice President (Mark Russell) were elected.

Committees were discussed and began to form.
