President’s Column

Get ready for our Annual Awards Banquet Hey crew, I hope everyone had a great first month of 2016.

I might be in the minority, but I love the winter months. I dislike being cold, but love seeing the passion and dedication runners and walkers show as the temps plummet.

There is no greater place to see this on display than at the Frostbite series. When I first joined the club, I was a staple at the series and would run every race I could. However, over the past several years, my appearance had become scarce. I ran a few races here and there, but ended up carving out time on my Saturday mornings to spend valuable time with my boys. This year I told my “boss” that I was going to volunteer at the Frostbite races — if I was going to talk the talk as Prez, I needed to walk the walk. So far, being out there with fellow volunteers in the cold rain and snow has been extremely rewarding. The selflessness of the volunteers and the commitment of the runners are inspiring. Even when the weather is poor, we continue to have great turnouts, and I cannot thank you all enough for making the 20152016 series so great.

Coming up this month is our Annual Banquet.

Speaking of inspiring, the young athletes recognized at this event are all that and more. It’s so great to hear the coaches praise their student athletes, not

only for their blazing fast times, but also for their terrific accolades in the classroom. The list of colleges and universities these athletes move on to attend is very impressive. The banquet is also a time when we get to thank our tireless group of volunteers who exemplify the true spirit of the sport. Above all, when you throw in food, drinks, and mingling with other runners, it turns into a really fun event within the running community.

Finally, we are working on some exciting things for the year ahead. We recently formed a steering committee to generate ideas on how to elevate the St. Louis Half Marathon as a premier race in the region.

We also have big plans for the volunteer picnic, a new spring race in Forest Park, and a possible open house at SLTC office this summer. Look for more details soon.

In closing, I hope everyone stays warm and continues to get out and run, walk, volunteer, and be a part of the amazing running community we have in St. Louis.

Lacey Abercrombie, the In-kind Donations Specialist at the International Institute, expressed need for new or gently used clothing (eg, T-shirts, and an even greater need for shoes) in good condition. These items will be donated to new refugees in Saint Louis, who come from several countries around the world.

“It’s okay if someone used the shoes for running for a long time,” she said. “They just need to be free of holes and major tears. We can take any type of shoes, but sneakers are great for our clients since they have to walk a lot. For adult clothing, we have a need for sizes XS, small or medium.

Child size L can be used for our adults, so that size is also acceptable. We take infant, toddler, and children’s clothing as well. Thank you so much for thinking of our new Americans,” she said. Medals from half or full marathons or triathlons can be donated to Medals4Mettle. Medals4Mettle is a worldwide network of doctors and other health professionals, providing an opportunity for endurance athletes to “play it forward” by enabling the gifting and awarding of earned medals to adults and children who demonstrate mettle, or courage, as they face life’s challenges. Saint Louis “giftings” have occurred at Ranken Jordan Institute and at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Young

Additionally, Big River Running Company accepts donations of shoes of any type for Solea Water/ Shoeman Water Projects. Shoeman Water Projects’ focus is to provide clean water in communities in developing countries and to keep used shoes out of landfills. “We have generated revenue to fund these water projects by collecting new and gently used shoes. Our shoe collection efforts improve our planet by keeping wearable, usable shoes out of local landfills and directing them to a secondary market for reuse both locally and globally,” Katie said. She also mentioned that a portion of Big River Running Company’s clinic proceeds go to local charities; when people sign up for the clinics, they are also giving back to the community. Donations can be dropped off at any of the four Big River Running Company’s locations: South City, West County, O’Fallon, Mo., and University City.

Saint Louisans may also bring shoes to FLEET FEET stores at Chesterfield, Des Peres, O’Fallon, Mo., Saint Charles, South County, and Town and Country.

“All six (FLEET FEET) locations serve as shoe drop-off locations for Shoeman Water Projects,” said Dave Spetnagel, of FLEET FEET sports. Details about Shoeman Water Projects can be found at http://www.shoemanwater.org/.” Shoeman Water Projects, partnered with Solea Water, is based in Bridgeton, Mo. As of Jan. 22, the organizations had collected 368, 996 pairs of shoes.

Pashos family keeps fit all over the globe The Pashoses, an early family on the Saint Louis running scene, are thriving all over the map. Leo Pashos ran his first of 13 marathons in Chicago, with his son, Chris, in 1978. Leo’s wife, Despina (“Dessie”) was one of the first women in the history the Summer Pace Series to place in the top 10 overall.

In 2014 and 2015, Chris Pashos, his wife, Hope, and his Boston family, have been participating in “Mud Runs,” grueling distance and obstacle events, in his now-home state of Massachusetts, and throughout New England.

“He runs one-half-hour every morning, no matter where he is. Now he’s in Switzerland,” Leo said, Son Demetrius Pashos participates regularly in trail runs, as does his wife, Susan. Deno, the third son, lives in San Antonio, Texas, with his wife, Faye. Deno prefers swimming, but still runs. As of January 2016, Leo and his wife, Dessie, visit the South City Family YMCA regularly for workouts. Their travels to date have included running events, and have ranged from Hawaii with the Navy, to the original Olympic marathon course in Greece, and throughout Europe.

Improvements continue in Forest Park Forest Park Forever’s website described 2015 as a banner year. Projects included major path and signage improvements at the Skinker, Oakland Avenue intersection, strengthening the dual path system around the park, and installing the chess tables near Steinberg Rink. Current plans include revitalizing Kennedy Forest.

“Sections of Kennedy Forest are old-growth, dating back to well before the outer limits of the city of St. Louis made it to the land on which Forest Park now sits. The Kennedy Forest Restoration Project, made possible by a lead gift from the Mysun Charitable Foundation, is an ambitious one-year restoration plan focused on revitalizing a 10-acre portion of the forest,” reads the blog.

by Forest Park in 2014, was the national winner in the “Young Artist” category of the Music Teachers National Association’s competition. Colagiovanni’s

creation, “Forest Park Rhapsody,” was originally performed at a Forest Park Forever Leffingwell Society event in the Jewel Box, sponsored by the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation for the Mizzou New Music Ensemble. His Forest Park-inspired work will be performed again in April at the association’s national conference in San Antonio. Forest Park “Forest Park Rhapsody,” a spritely instrumental, is available via Forest Park Forever’s website.

Trip lands SLTC member in travel company catalog Glenda Morrison, cyclist and walker, is training for the GO! Saint Louis Half-marathon, is “gaining ground” after she broke her tibia in 2013. She and Joan Fromme cycled in Ireland in 2015 and were surprised to see their pictures, more than once, in a catalog promoting The VBT travel company.

The trip involved adjusting to new bicycles and riding on the left side of the road.

“We rode six days through the countryside, and on Aran Islands,” Glenda said. “After the riding trip Joan, and I stayed 3 days in Dublin. While in Dublin, we toured Kilmainham Gaol (historic prison), Trinity College, and took a day trip to Northern Ireland. It was a wonderful trip. Just talking about our time in Ireland makes me want to go back.”

Meet SLTC President Mike Orrico Hi everyone, my name is Mike Orrico. Most of you know that as of January 1, I took on the role as President of the Track Club. Prior to this, I served on the board for several years as well as directed several races, most recently the last three runnings of the Corps of Discovery Trail Race in Weldon Springs.

I grew up in Boca Raton, Florida, and spent most of my childhood running around on the local baseball diamond and soccer fields. But, it wasn’t until later in life I found a true love for the sport of running. After high school, I attended Saint Louis University on a baseball scholarship, but after 4 years of playing college ball, I hung up my glove.

After a life of sports came to an end, I spent the next few years trying to fill the void and found myself floundering and out of shape.

In 2005, I started to run a bit, but nothing more than a few miles here and there. I married my wife, Erin, in 2006, but it wasn’t until we were expecting our first child (Luca) in mid-2010 that I decided to turn it up a notch.

So, on a bet from my friend Brian, I signed up for the Chicago Marathon. Luca was born in June, which made training very tough. Even so, I was determined to finish the race and hold my son at the finish line. It wasn’t the performance I wanted, but that day changed my life.

Since then, I’ve completed a bunch of races,

some good and some not so good. I’ve had a few good performances over the last several years, notching PRs in the half marathon (1:26) and marathon (3:14). However, a 3+ year running streak and running 3,000 miles a year for 3 consecutive years are probably what I am most proud of running-wise. The streak and miles really have taught me a lot about myself, both as a runner and as a person. My hope is to continue my running streak; however, with added duties of the Track Club and at home with my kiddos (Luca, 5 and Killian, 2), I think the streak of 3,000+ miles will eventually come to an end.

As I mentioned in my first President’s column in January, I am both excited and nervous to lead this great club. The traditions of the St. Louis Track Club span almost 50 years, and I would like to leave it just a little bit better when my tenure is over. Together as a club, I think we can continue to improve on the things we do well and better execute the little details. We need to spread the word and let people know how great being a member of the St. Louis Track Club is.

I took on this role because I truly believe it is the best way for me to give back to the sport that has given me so much in a short period of time. Baseball will always be my first passion, but I am starting to realize that running is my true one.

discussed. Updated to the website to correct current problems were covered. All other events on the 2016 calendar were discussed.

What can I do while I’m healing?

Q: I just got diagnosed with a stress fracture in my foot. Is my running career over?

– Carolyn M. A: Carolyn, I’m so sorry to hear about your stress fracture. Running injuries are never easy to deal with, especially when the word “fracture” is involved in the diagnosis. Even though you may think it’s the end of the world, fear not, you’ll be fine. A few words of advice from someone who was sidelined most of last autumn: listen to your doctor, take your PT very seriously (no skimping on your homework), and don’t do anything stupid like running on it early, no matter how “good” your foot may feel.

Just be patient and use this downtime to relax and get stronger in other areas. Ask your doctor if there’s another activity you can do like swimming, aqua jogging, or kettle bell work. You may surprise yourself and come out of this even stronger!

Q: Hey Styles, in your opinion, what makes a good runner? – Anthony O. A: Ah yes, the infamous topic debated on many a long run, in various running-related publications, and online. So what does make a good runner? Is it quantitative? For example, does Dean Karnazes take the crown because of the crazy amount of miles he racks up in a year?

(Heck, in a day?) Or do we judge on quality: Ryan Hall, Shalane Flanagan, and Allison Felix are some of the fastest people in the world at their respective distances. (Which brings up ancillary questions: how do we compare historic and present performances? Do we take

into consideration those rumored to have taken performance enhancing substances?) This subject could be discussed ad nauseam, but here’s my opinion: A good runner is one who gets out there, with all their heart, and tries to better themselves – whether it’s their time, distance, or overall health – while enjoying the process, one stride at a time.

Q: I’ve been dating a very runner-centric gal for quite some time. With Valentine’s Day coming up, I’m having a hard time thinking of the perfect present. Please help! – Lance C. A: Well Lance, thankfully a very knowledgeable runner gal is in charge of Ask Styles now and hopefully has some pretty great suggestions for you. A gift card to a running-related store or website is always a solid choice, since all you have to do is choose a dollar amount and let her do all the work. If you know what she loves and don’t mind doing some legwork, why not put together a scavenger hunt at her favorite park or trail? Prizes could include a mini-gift basket of her favorite nutrition (mini-Gatorade bottles, Gu, Nuun tabs), accessories (ear warmers, headbands, gloves), and a new running outfit, all placed at strategic points on the route. Or, if you really want to mix it up, offer to go for a run WITH her and just enjoy some additional time together outside.

Tip of the Month

Warming up is crucial to staying injury-free This month, I’d like to highlight the importance of proper pre-exercise warm up. Increases in exercise and strength training can be accompanied by potential increases in injury. Many of these injuries can be prevented by proper pre-workout warmup and post-workout stretching.

The most common error I’ve seen in pre-workout warmup is that the person is not actually warming up; rather, they are performing what is called a static stretching. Static stretching is loosely defined as maintaining the position of a muscle with the intent of lengthening it over time. Bending over to touch your toes in order to stretch hamstrings is a static stretch.

There is quite a bit of dispute in the athletic community about the effectiveness of static stretching preexercise. Mostly, the literature says don’t do it!

A proper warmup should be performed to “loosen muscles and tendons to increase the range of motion of various joints, and literally warm up the body.”

This type of stretching, called dynamic stretching, involves engaging the muscles that are going to be used during the course of the activity. This is why most weight lifters will do body-weight squats before stepping up to a bar or runners will stride out in front of a marathon line. That being said, just doing ANY dynamic stretch won’t necessarily be beneficial; it should be specific to your activity.

Frostbite half marathon marks milestone for young runner The half marathon event of the Frostbite Series marked a special occasion for Emily Reed and her daughter, Grace Meyer, 12.

The race marked Grace’s first half marathon. She and Emily crossed the finish line in 2:00.56. Grace took 1st place in her 1-12 age division, while Emily placed 13th of 30 in the 30-34 division.

-Donna Springer In the fall of 2015, my 12-year-old daughter approached me at the end of her middle school cross country season, wanting to train for a half marathon with me. After consulting with her doctor, I began searching for half marathons. Some had minimum age requirements, others required lots of travel, then I remembered having done the Frostbite Series Half Marathon a couple years ago. bite Series this winter. It’s a great way to stay active and keep working on goals through the winter when you may be tempted to hibernate a bit. I’ve been so impressed with SLTC and the volunteers at these events. We’ve had a few race days where the weather was miserable for us runners and I can only imagine for the volunteers who were standing through rain, snow and wind. The five race series presented a great chance to teach my daughter about pacing, nutrition, hills and the need to just keep going even in tough conditions- things that I hope she carries on with her entire life. able to jump into longer runs. So I kept training and my mom found a race that I was allowed to do, for some of the races around here I was too young for. It was the Frostbite Series.

So, we started the series in December.

One of the things that I loved about the races was that races leading up to the half marathon helped to train me, and they made me more confident that I could finish the race. After some days of bad weather, the day of the race ended up having beautiful weather. With family and friends there to support me and run with me, I finished my half marathon.

The volunteers along the course were amazing and extremely helpful. The course wasn’t too hilly or repetitive, and ended up being really fun. Everything about the whole race was kind of like a dream, it was just so awesome. I hope more people decide to run this race, especially kids, because it was really awesome. I will never forget the wonderful experience! ~Grace Meyer
