Meet our new board members, executive director Welcome to the new members of the St. Louis Track Club Board of Directors: Dan Stone, Wendie Cummings, Jill Finklang, and Mike Huelsmann.

These Board members have been elected to a two-year term and will join David White and myself to plan the strategy for the future of the SLTC. The board elected the officers for the position of president, vice president and secretary for the 2013 calendar year. I was re-elected president and accepted; David White was elected vice president and accepted; Wendie Cummings was elected secretary and accepted.

I am excited to announce our Executive Director, Jen Mommens. Jen will report to the Board of Directors and help in executing the club’s goals.

These include overseeing race management, communications, public relations, membership drives, website upgrade, and external relationship building. Jen will also manage the day-to-day operations with the office manager, webmaster, editor, and treasurer reporting to her.

By having the executive director coordinate the operations of the club, the Board of Directors will have time to focus on the strategy of the SLTC as we work to meet the needs of our members.

We will keep you updated with our goals and progress on our website.

We have a lot going on. The Frostbite Series is nearing its last run of another great season. Our annual SLTC Banquet will be Feb. 16, 2013. I encourage all to attend. This is our annual recognition of the top Cross Country High School athletes in the St. Louis metro area. This is a time we give recognition to our great volunteers that make our events happen for the running community. One outstanding volunteer is presented with Volunteer of the Year for all the contributions of their time the person has given club throughout the year.

Please come out and help us recognize these outstanding individuals.

We are in the planning stages of our spring Road Series. This series is in Forest Park on Wednesday evenings, and it’s great midweek pick-me-up. If you would like to help with this event, please see our volunteer form on the SLTC website.

Runners tackle notoriously tough 7.5-mile trail race in Grafton, Illinois The Road Runners Club of America states that the Pere Marquette Endurance Trail Run is the “toughest 7.5-mile trail run in the Midwest.” In 2012, for the 24th running, the event reached its 650-person entry cap within a few hours. The Metro Tri Club’s Team Godzilla website reported that 590 completed the challenging cross country course at Pere Marquette State Park, Grafton, Ill., on Dec. 8. Overall male winner was Dan Rooney, 52, of O’Fallon, Ill., in 53:16. Overall female winner was Maureen Selzler, 31, of Glen Carbon, Ill., 26th overall, in 1:00:36. Male Master’s winner was Rick Barnes, 48, 4th overall, in 56:48. The female Master’s winner was Amy Smock, 40, 52nd overall, in 1:04:13.

Experienced racer Alison Bourey described her race as “muddy, but relatively mild.”

“While the mud did present some challenge, it was not the trial it was in earlier years when it sucked off your shoes. It was worth the effort to stay up until midnight Sept. 1 to register for the race. The Metro Tri club worked with the park and had great signage and mile markers. The shirt this year was absolutely beautiful, with multicolor screening. Another special added attraction was that our race number got us a post-race drink at the Grafton winery.

“Part of the fun this year was that Andy and I did the course together for the first time. Andy finished second in his 70-74 age group, I was third in mine.

I would have been second if I had not “moved up” to 65. Sue (Turner) was 1st in the Women 70+. Poor Sue fell asleep waiting to register and had to go

on the waiting list, but she made it after all. What is great is that there are plenty of us competing at older ages,” Alison said.

Overall winner Dan Rooney set a 50-54 age group record. Lolle Boettcher, the winner of the female 65-69 year group, bettered the previous age group record by forty minutes.

Walking Ramblers start the New Year right with chilly Jan. 1 outing Fifteen bundled up souls braved the cold winds and 25-degree temperatures for the Walking Ramblers’ 2013 New Year’s Day Walk. The walk has a history dating from the 1990s when the YMCA’s Jack Welch gathered persons outdoors at the Benjamin Moore Paint Company in Soulard. The new starting point has been the downtown Culinaria at 9th and Olive; many ramblers choose to enjoy food from the Deli afterwards in the upstairs dining area.

This year’s group included 50-state marathoner Lee Hoffman, as well as Sue Turner and Mary Jones, who were pioneers on the Saint Louis walking scene during the 1980s. New Saint Louis Track Club member Patricia Cornell organized her first Saint Louis walk with help from Andy Bourey. She has a 10-year history of organizing walks near Willits, Calif., during the spring and summer. Some ramblers chose to cross The Eads Bridge — the icy sidewalk and the virulent winds made the crossing a challenge, though the distance was short. The snow-covered Arch grounds provided another memorable Saint Louis scene to help ramblers ring in the New Year.

show up in storefronts along downtown Belleville’s East and West Main Streets and compete for prizes.

The contest honors Belleville’s German heritage — in 1855, about six-thousand German immigrants enjoyed gingerbread and other bakery items downtown during the holidays.

This year’s entries included one specific to running: “Run Around Belleville,” crafted by Daniel Trapp, Heidi Clark, and Christy Belsom of the Belleville Running Club. It had gingerbread figures running along peppermint stone footpaths and roads covered with sprinkles toward an edible finish line.

The Gingerbread Walk provided a venue for walking and running as well as for food artistry during the holiday season. The Gingerbread Walk 5K on Dec. 1 drew 934 finishers. Gingerbread sculptor Daniel Trapp placed third in the 35-39 year age group in 21:27.

Rae Mohrmann takes home Grand Masters title at Run for the Ranch marathon Rae Mohrmann traveled to Springfield, Mo., Dec. 30 to add another marathon to her running resume, the 13th annual “Run for the Ranch.”

“I was the Grand Masters winner. That was a surprise!” Rae said. “It is eight loops for the full, and four for the half, of a 3.29-mile course-start and finish at Missouri State University. I did recognize a few faces from Saint Louis.”

The hosts, The Ozark Mountain Ridge Runners, described the course as flat with a few hills, and the temperature as guaranteed to be cold — conducive to fast times. Jacob Reed, of Saint Charles, took sixth place overall and first place in the 20-24 age group. (3:14:55). Chris Allen, of Maplewood, Mo., placed 29th overall and fourth in the 40-44 age group. Frank Jones, O’Fallon, IL, placed 5th in the 50-54 age group. Shelbey Stuckmeyer, 19, of Barnhart, M0., placed first in the female 1-19 age group; Rebecca Jarvis, of Festus, placed third in the female 35-39 age group; Saint Louisan Nancy Berg placed first in the female 50-54 age group. Rebecca Copeland placed first in the female 55-59 group in the half-marathon. 274 completed the half-marathon, 137 the full marathon.

Ralph Brindley is adjusting well to his new home, recovering from surgery Ralph Brindley’s daughter, Bev, sent an update about Ralph’s new life in Iowa. Ralph is a longtime Saint Louis Track Club member and was The Saint Louis Track Club “Volunteer of the Year” in 2003.

Within the last year, Ralph relocated to Iowa, celebrated his 90th birthday, and underwent hip surgery.

“Christmas was fantastic,” Bev said. “We had nine people at lunch, and he loved every minute. At our monthly conference with Fleur Heights last week, they said he is doing fine. I’m glad to see he’s got an appetite back.”

“The therapists all say he brightens up their day when they see him, and keep thanking me for bringing him to Fleur Heights. One woman, Rose, is always asking about him when she sees me. We rode to the ortho doctor with her in the van the last time we went, and she was pleased as punch! I guess he still has his charm.

“Thanks to everyone for all the Christmas cards, pictures, and phone calls. He enjoys hearing from all his friends and talks about you all the time,” Bev said.

High Schoolers stay in top form with Big River Distance Camp “Forty middle school and high school runners spent part of their holiday break running!” said Kate Helbig, of Big River Running Company.

The Big River Winter Distance Running Camp has been a holiday tradition among high school and middle school runners. Big River Running Company hosts an informative and fun-filled winter distance camp for 7th - 12th grade runners during the holiday season.“Everybody trains in the summer. Champions train all year long,” reads the tagline. Runners from more than 60 different area schools have attended camp since its inception.

“Esteemed counselors included local high school stars like Eric Fernandez, Amanda Benke, Thomas Campbell, and Emmett Cookson (who are now successful collegiate runners; high school coaches); and

Knowledgeable speakers, informative talks, college running panel discussions, interactive clinics and daily workouts in Queeny Park filled each day, capped by competitive games of trivia. Camp culminated with an indoor track meet at MICDS where the partici-

pants raced a mile and a 4x400 meter relay. Campers definitely had fun, learned more about the sport of distance running, and have a jump start on the spring track season!” Kate said.

The Cross Country Championship event starts at the Central Fields in Forest Park.

Awards: Ribbons will be given at each race to the top three finishers in the following age groups: 12 & under, 13-14, 15-16, 17-19, five-year age groups 20-79 and 80 & over. Your age on Dec. 15 will determine your age group for the Series. You must complete at least three races to be eligible for a Series award. There will be a minimum of 3 awards in each age group and a maximum of 5 awards in each group dependent upon the number of entries in each age group. 14th Annual Ancient Order of Hibernian’s ‘TOP OF THE MORNING’ 5K Run/Walk & ½-Mile Fun Run Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Toolen’s Running Start, Shiloh, IL TIME: 8:30am – 5K Run/Walk. The ½-Mile Kids Fun Run will immediately follow the completion of the 5K. STORE LOCATION: 3220 Green Mount Crossing Drive, Shiloh, IL 62269. Exit 16 off I-64 East. Turn right on Green Mount Road. Turn left

at next light, into the Green Mount Crossing Shopping Complex. Toolen’s Running Start will be on your left.

COURSE: Course will be an out-&-back, starting in back and finishing in front of Toolen’s Running Start.

DIVISIONS: 5K – Top Overall Male & Female; Masters M & F; Age Groups (M & F): 10 & Under; 11-14; 16-19; 20-24; 25 – 29; 30 – 34; 35 – 39; 40 – 44; 45 – 49; 50 – 54; 55 – 59; 60 – 64; 65 – 69; 70 & Over.

Kid’s Run – All Youth Ages 10 & Under.

AWARDS: The top 3 overall winners will receive trophies. The top 3 finishers in each age division will receive medals. Medals will be given to all ½-Mile Kid Fun Run finishers. January meeting minutes 1/08/2013 6:15 p.m.

SLTC Office Minutes taken by: Sallie Story Approved minutes from December meeting Membership: 81 new members 256 renewals 898 household memberships Board Members: Wendie Cummings, Jill Finklang, Mike Huelsmann, Dan Stone, David White, Pam Mosca Executive Director: Jen Mommens was hired as the SLTC’s executive director. She will handle a variety of responsibilities for the club.

Election of Officers: President, Pam Mosca; Vice President, David White; Secretary, Wendie Cummings. The board cast votes and the winners all accepted their positions.

By-laws: The board reviewed the bylaws and made corrections and necessary. Jen will update them accordingly.

SLTC Goals for 2013: The board discussed goals for the new year, including membership targets, publishing the newsletter electronically, creating sponsorship guidelines, redesigning the website, and establishing race management services.

Newsletter: The board agreed that switching the newsletter to electronic publishing and distribution is the right move for the club. The webmaster and newsletter editor are investigating different production and distribution options. The goal is to start e-publishing by the end of the first quarter. This move will save a substantial amount of money in publishing cost, cut down on paper use, and allow the newsletter to be more interactive and in full color. Members need to submit updated email addresses to the office at sltcoffice@yahoo.com.

Race Updates: •Half Marathon & 5K, Nov. 4, 2012 - A donation to Special Olympics was made from the 2012 proceeds.

•2013 Half Marathon date – Nov. 3, 2013 - Race director needed for 2013: This position will be paid, with the amount still to be determined. There will be an ad in TTN calling for applications. The board would like all applications by

Feb. 25, as to make a decision on the position as soon as possible. Applications will be accepted at sltcoffice@yahoo.com.

-The board also discussed pricing and dates for 2013 race registration.

•Frostbite Race Directors: Brian Carter & Bob Chitwood -Three races have completed; the series is going well and registration is robust. The board decided against awarding finishers’ ribbons for adults, but agreed to consider ribbons for children.

•Cross Country Championships Feb 2, 2013: Dan Stone attended planning meetings as SLTC representative.

•Track Series: A race director is also needed for the Track Series. This is an unpaid volunteer position.

•2013 Open meetings – Open meetings will be conducted quarterly in March, June, September, and December at the Forest Park Vistors’ Center at 6:30 p.m.
