NEW SLTC TRAIL RACE!

The St. Louis Track Club is in the final stages of planning a new trail race for the St. Louis area!

The Corps of Discovery Trail Race will be a half marathon on the Lewis and Clark trails in the Weldon Spring Conservation Area.

The race will be Sunday, Sept. 8, with the first wave of runners starting at 8 a.m. There will be plenty of support on the course and unique and awards for top finishers.

Entry will be limited to the first 100 registrants, and SLTC members will be granted first opportunity to register. Be on the lookout for more details and registration info in the coming weeks.

President’s Column

Learn more about our training program!

St. Louis Track Club Members, I hope you have been enjoying the great outdoors this summer. I have seen many of you at Forest Park.

Our 40th annual Cross Country Kickoff on Saturday, August 3rd was a great success. Race director Shelly Kannel did an awesome job. We had 200+ runners participate. There was an increase of 70 participants over last year. A youth team division was added this year.

The weather cooperated, which brought out many runners. Everyone liked the cool red and black drawstring bags with a zippered pouch. Thanks to all the volunteers that helped Shelly make the run a success. Check out our website to see results and the great pictures taken by Brent Newman.

As usual, Big River Race Management Team provided excellent timing services.

Thanks to the participants who came out. We had several groups come out, including a large group from Bryan Cave.

COME ON OUT! There will be an open information meeting to explain The St. Louis Track Club Half Marathon and 5K training programs. If you have committed to the training, come on out. If you are not sure if this is for you, come and find out what the program will offer. There is no charge for this meeting and all are welcome to attend.

The information meeting will be this Tuesday, Aug. 6 starting at 6 p.m. at the Sports Medicine and Training Center Crestwood location. The program will be explained and you will have the opportunity to see the training facility, meet the SMTC trainers and St. Louis

Track Club staff, and have your questions answered.

There are several options available.

The entry fee of the Half Marathon or 5K is included in the cost of the training program. See Page 14 and our website for more details.

Grab a friend and come out. We are looking forward to seeing you.

NEW RACE We are excited to introduce a new race this fall – a trail race! Corps of Discovery Trail Race will be Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, on the Lewis & Clark Trails. There will be a cap of 100 participants, so watch our website for open registration information.

PICNIC To show our appreciation to all of our volunteers, our annual Volunteer Picnic will be Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Forest Park Visitors Center. If you have volunteered any time from September 2012 through August 2013, please join us so we can say THANK YOU for volunteering and helping to continue to provide running and walking events throughout the year.

Team SLTC updates and news The points race is really heating up in Team SLTC! We have runners competing in ultramarathons as well as working on a half marathon in every state. There is still plenty of time to earn points in 2013, even if your racing goals are not as lofty. Every mile raced gets you closer to an award like a free shirt or gift card at the end of the year. Just race in a St. Louis Track Club shirt, then email us your results at office@stlouistrackclub.com. We have plenty of shirts and singlets available at the office if you need one to race in!

Join us for the next Team Event at the Clifton Heights 3k and Party in the Park on September 28. This afternoon race immediately precedes the annual Clifton Heights neighborhood festival. The race awards will be presented on stage right before the band goes on! We will have refreshments from our sponsor, Schlafly, available for club members to enjoy after the race. Join us!

The Blue Water Half Marathon in Port Huron, Ohio, was the first time I wore a SLTC shirt. It was cool enough to wear something with sleeves.

Interesting, this time several people talked to me because of the shirt, and they were even more excited when they found out I was from the REAL St. Louis (apparently, St. Louis, Michigan is NOT real).

One woman who introduced herself had run 147 marathons but really wanted to run a marathon in St. Louis, so I told her about Go! St. Louis and Cowbell.

This was a very enjoyable course. We ran about 3 miles along the waterway (above) toward Lake Huron, with Canada just on the other side of the water.

I am trying to run a half marathon in each state, so this was state #12 for me, and also was the first time I went back under 2 hours after being injured last November. Overall, just an exciting race for me!

Clifton Heights 3K & kids run at Party in the Park

Condolences to friends and family of William ‘Bill’ McCabe Rudden The Saint Louis Track Club extends its condolences to the family and friends of William “Bill” McCabe Rudden. Bill passed away from undetermined causes at his home June 23.

Bill maintained his membership in the Saint Louis Track Club from 1985 until 1999, after which he focused his triathlon training on cycling. He completed nine Ironman triathlons. His tanned, robust physique was a familiar presence on the local scene. Triathlete Ernie Carr accompanied Bill in training and at races for 15-plus years. Nancy, Ernie’s wife, described Bill as “a lot of fun,” and said that he was always playing tricks on people.

Bill was a retired captain of the Saint Louis Fire Department, and his obituary mentioned his interests in watching birds and participating in athletics. He is survived by one son, Billy, and several siblings. Bill’s memorial service was held at Hoffmeister South County Chapel on July 13, on what would have been Bill’s 67th birthday. Triathletes who attended Bill’s memorial service included author and Ironman triathlete Ed Wolfgram.

“Bill was active for 40+ years,” Ed said. “He was always a partner. When I bicycled with him in Illinois, he always did a body count. He always looked after others. He was loved by his family, his fellow firemen, and fellow athletes. I am saddened by his death. In the last year, he won the 65-and over age group at the triathlons — I covered the 80-and over.”

Andy Bourey goes international with trip to Chamonix, France Andy Bourey, longtime Saint Louisan, racewalker, and organizer of The Galloping Gourmets, traversed some unusual paths this summer when he visited three generations of his relatives in France and went on trail hikes through the Alps. One hike with family members in Chamonix included crossing glacial snow and boulder fields.

“Some of the trails just had a stick on the other side of a passage of rocks to tell where the trail started up again,” Alison, his wife, said. “One thing that really impressed me was how all ages hiked in the Alps including very Andy Bourey on one of this hikes in France. young children and elderly people having little trouble.” Andy hiked with his, son, Drew, Drew’s wife, Lisa, and 11-year old Axel.

Alison also included some walking during the trip.

She described Paris as “only about 10K in diameter, and excellent for walking.”

After Andy’s return, he walked 8 miles in Tower Grove Park and through South City neighborhoods with The Walking Ramblers on July 21. Although those “trails” were more flat, and there was no snow, the walk offered its own attractions and challenges.

Zombies after runners’ brains in inaugural St. Louis Zombie Run

professional makeup artists. They did a FABULOUS job and added to the ‘realism’ of the event. To me, the zombie makeup made them life-like.”

“Get ready for 3.1 miles of gut-wrenching, bloodpumping, sweat-dripping fear. It will be the most exhilarating 5K of your life – if you survive, of course,” read the website for The Zombie Run. Despite the grim warnings, the registration site assures that dead or alive, “all runners get to complete the entire course and to attend the quarantine party.” Interested parties have the option of registering as runners or as zombies.

The inaugural Saint Louis’ Zombie Run took place July 14 in Queeny Park. The start harbored a flipped tanker, the source of the presumed toxic compound.

“The post-apocalyptic playground offers no protection. Runners purchase a balloon. If it is popped by a zombie runner, the person is infected,” warns the pre-race instructions. One Saint Louis runner was Chance Hollingsworth.

“There were so many (zombies) at the beginning that all of my ‘life balloons’ were consumed before the 1st quarter mile,” Chance said. “I don’t know my place; I do know I finished in 29 min, which is about five or six minutes over my usual 5k pace. I attributed that to one, dodging the zombies; and two, avoiding the litany of people walking, not running, on the trail. It became evident early that since this was such a cool and unique concept, it brought out more ‘novice’ runners than other 5ks.”

Positives, he commented, included the great, innovative concept, and good execution.

“The production company and FLEET FEET did a great job making it as believable as possible. The course was relatively flat, which helped, except the ‘big hill’ finish at the end. Inviting food trucks was a nice wrinkle. There was music, a disc jockey onsite. The folks working at the race were helpful and quick to give sound directions and answers on questions.”

Jaime Hall, human resources manager of FLEET FEET Sports, commented about the zombie makeup area.

“It was pretty awesome,” Jaime said. “Participants that signed up to be Zombies were made up by

FLEET FEET Sports hopes to “grow the event for next year,” according to Jaime. “It was such a great event, and I look forward to being a part of it next year!” she said.

Missoula Marathon gets rave review from Denis McCarthy and friends “It was fantastic. I would highly recommend it,” said Denis McCarthy about the Missoula, Mont., Marathon on July 14.

It was his third Missoula Marathon. He had suggested to some of his running friends, that it would ideal to finish a “milestone” event at Missoula, and they did. Three finished their 50-state marathon quests – one for the second time. One finished her 100th, and another their 30th state in a year. The weekend included a 50-State Marathon Club reunion.

Denis’ job on race day was to run and motivate – “distract” some of the “Milestoners.” He focused on the “distraction” factor, and he said it worked.

“What a blast,” one commented to Denis. “You rock as a pacer, even though you did talk to 20 dogs, sat on 10 chairs, and SANG all along the course!”

Course details included a mounted cowboys and guy in a tux playing a grand piano in his front yard while taking requests greeting the runners. Spectators included horses and donkeys, and many dogs. Denis wondered why there were so many dogs in Missoula. All photos were free, and people could leave with printed copies.

“They have a Beer Run, 5k, 10K, half and full, and most importantly, a great running attitude like we have here in Saint Louis,” Denis said. “Love the

scenery, organization, local support, and fun items…

Awesome! So, put Missoula, Montana, on your schedule.”

Missoula was Denis’ 128th 26.2-mile or longer run, his 18th in 2013. He has three states “to go” toward his second round of 50 states: Alaska, Oregon, and Washington. His first 50-state finish was in ’09. His second finish is scheduled Sept. 29 at the Bellingham Wash., marathon. He qualified for Boston and ran it twice.

“I have nine other ‘extras’ scheduled because they are cool, so I could end at 30 this year. Bottom line: running is so much fun and runners are the nicest folks you can ever meet. Period. That’s what motivates me.”

Denis is a member of the Saint Louis Track Club and trains with the marathon training group. He participates in the Happy Runners Family Group on Facebook, which includes many Saint Louis Track Club members.

Nancy Snow welcomes retirement after 20+ years of social work Congratulations and best wishes to Nancy Snow in her retirement. She retired from her 26-year position as a school social worker at Hazelwood Central High

School. For most of these years, she worked in an alternative program with students who were suspended for 90 days.

Nancy has been walking for over 20 years and is familiar to the Pace Run walkers. She has walked six half-marathons, most of them Track Club half-marathons. She has participated in the last three Frostbite Series, calling them, “a great way of getting out when the weather is cold.”

“I walk for fitness and socialization,” Nancy said. “I always walk with friends. I love the SLTC. I have met many great people and am motivated by great athletes like Sue Turner and Ed Wolfgram.”

However, she said, her main exercise, is swimming.

She has been on University City’s Swim Club’s Master Swim Team for 14 years.

Good luck to Nancy, whether walking, swimming, or socializing!

Mystery of Leonard Busen’s whereabouts solved Gwen Eckelman at the Saint Louis Track Club office alerted some members to returned mail from Leonard Busen. Walkers at the Pace Series had noted his absence for several weeks.

“After a lot of sleuthing, I finally found Leonard,” Sue Turner said. “Late last November, he suffered some kind of medical/health issues and wound up in the hospital for a month, after which, he was transferred to The Quarters at Des Peres for speech therapy, physical, and occupational therapy. He is now living at The Hallmark of Creve Coeur. He said he’s gone up one pants size because the food is so good. When he noticed his ankles were swollen, he quit using the elevator and now walks the stairs – the swelling went away. He can’t drive for six months or maybe longer.”

“His address is The Hallmark of Creve Coeur. Apartment 339, 1 New Ballas Place, Creve Coeur, Mo., 63146. I’m sure he would enjoy receiving cards to let him know we’re thinking of him,” Sue said.

July board meeting summary St. Louis Track Club Board Meeting Summary of Minutes for July 11, 2013.

This past month we received 28 new members and 8 renewals, for a total of 1,976 individuals.

The meeting was dedicated to a discussion on the 5-year vision of the St. Louis Track Club. The following ideas were discussed: •Focus on growing membership in Illinois and among younger runners. An emphasis on the social aspect of running would be beneficial.

•Select one vendor as the source for all product/service needs for the year to achieve more consistent service and lower prices.

•Clearly define the roles of board, staff, and race directors.

•Adjust office hours to be more flexible.

•Consider reducing open board meetings to two meetings per year. The banquet and a social after Labor Day. •Continue developing a partnership with USATF. •Changes to events will be considered.

oFrostbite:

-Change courses for variety.

-Change or stagger start times to relieve

registration congestion.

-Offer early packet pickup. oRoad Series:

-Look at different locations and possibly create

the Park Series. Rotate the races between

Let Me Run Program Coming to St. Louis Let Me Run is a running program designed to inspire boys through the power of running to be themselves, to build healthy relationships, and to live an active lifestyle. You may be familiar with Girls on the Run – a very successful organization that has a strong foundation here in the St. Louis area.

For parents and schools looking to offer something similar for our boys as well, the LMR leadership team from Charlotte, NC, will have a coaches’ training session 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Open house for training programs is Aug. 6!

Whether you are looking to take on your first 5K or half marathon this fall or are a seasoned runner looking to take your performance to the next level, we have a program tailored specifically for you.

Starting in August, we will have paced group runs on Sunday mornings and optional workouts at SMTC on Tuesday evenings, with the goal of completing the St. Louis Half Marathon and Clayton Police 5K on November 3.

The St. Louis Track Club and Sports Medicine & Training Center are hosting an open house for anyone interested in joining or already registered for our half marathon and 5K training programs.

The open house will be 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the Crestwood SMTC, and refreshments will be served.
