Spring racing season kicks off!

St. Louis Track Club Members,

More changes coming to Forest Park this summer Runners and walkers will see changes to Forest Park’s southwest corner. Forest Park Forever announced that this summer, improvements at the intersection of McCausland Avenue, Clayton Road, Oakland Avenue, and Skinker Boulevard will begin.

New sidewalks and bike paths will connect with the park’s path system. Oakland Avenue will be reduced to two lanes, buffered by bicycle lanes, and a milelong sidewalk along the park. New traffic signals and crosswalks will create safer access for cyclists and pedestrians. Construction will begin this summer, with targeted completion in early 2016 (Forest Park Forever News, spring 2015).

St. Patrick’s Day tradition still running strong Some longtime runners have dubbed the 5-mile Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Run “The Rite of Spring” or think of the run as the beginning of the running season.

“The 37th annual Michelob Ultra St. Patrick’s Day Parade Run, held on Saturday, March 14, encompassed more than 8,000 participants,” said Debby Patton, of The St. Patrick’s Day Parade Run Committee, Big River Running Company.

“Starting at the intersection of Broadway and Walnut, runners made their way through the streets of downtown St. Louis, with the final destination, Runner’s Village in Kiener Plaza. After the run, participants were treated to refreshments, including a sampling of Michelob Ultra beer, and live music into the afternoon. In addition to the bag drop/changing stations, as provided in previous years, the run also partnered with Ballpark Village to provide premium parking for race participants, t-shirt pickup the week of the race, at their location, and activities in the

Village well into the evening. It was safe to say that a good time was had by all!”

“I love seeing the sea of green running up Market and hearing many cheers along the course, both from runners and from parade-goers who staked out their party spots early,” said Julie Lossos. “St. Pat’s always exudes a true running community feel and reminds me why I love to run in St. Louis. It’s also a great way to kick off spring.” Julie placed 6th of 4,286 women, second of 819 women in the 30-34 age group with her 30:05 time.

“For me, it’s the tradition of running the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Run that makes it so much fun. The camaraderie and revelry before and after the race is unmatched. The race course is challenging, but so much fun because you are surrounded by so many runners and spectators who are all out to have a good time! I had a blast running this year,” said Katie Helbig. Katie was the 13th woman overall, third of 819 women in the 30-34 age group with her 32:47 time. Matt O’Connor was overall winner, time 24:43.

Margo Richardson was overall female winner, time 28:45. Sandy Dailey was the wheelchair division winner, time 40:31.

This year’s run featured clear, crisp weather. Past runs have involved challenges of rain or snow!

Rae Mohrmann garners media attention with 100th marathon Rae Mohrmann rated KSDK Channel 5 News coverage as she trained for her 100th marathon. “Ferguson Grandmother Competing in 100th Marathon” on KSDK’s evening news March 25 showed Rae running smoothly along the streets of Ferguson, where she has lived for more than 30 years and has taught for 26 years. The sub headline, “Determination and Inspiration Among the Damage,” alluded to Rae’s wishes for healing for her community. Rae has previously run 50 marathons 50 in states. Frank Cusumano of KSDK described her as an “amazing woman.”

Walking Ramblers take advantage of warmer weather The Walking Ramblers are maintaining their yearround schedule of scenic walks.

“Although it was a beautiful day, there were only three of us,” said Sue Turner, who led the Forest Park to Shrewsbury Metro Walk on March 21. “We rode the Metro to Shrewsbury, and headed out toward the Sunnen station. Since the McDonald’s on Big Bend closed, we used the Conoco station for our first pit stop. The roads are still walkable in spite of all the construction. The rest of the route was unchanged, including a lovely walk through Wash U campus between Big Bend and Skinker. Then we got on the path to the Forest Park Visitor Center. It took three hours for the 10 miles, which is a bit slower than I like, but it is what it is.”

“Forsythia was in bloom, and we actually got warm!” said Alison Bourey. Walking Ramblers membership is gratis; routes offer walkers mileage for long-distance training, but shorter options are always available.

Research study to investigate pepperment oil for GI distress Elizabeth, “Lizzie,” Kuckuk, a graduate student/ dietetic intern at St. Louis University, is currently recruiting endurance athletes for a graduate research study involving the effects of peppermint oil supplementation upon gastrointestinal (GI) distress

in endurance athletes during half marathons, marathons, triathlons, bike races or similar endurance events lasting over two hours. She said that the time commitment for interested participants is minimal, and that volunteers must be healthy nonsmokers 18 to 90 years of age who have previously trained for an endurance event longer than two hours and are currently training for an endurance event this spring.

Participants would be given peppermint oil or a placebo capsule prior to their events and rate their GI symptoms afterward.

“We hypothesize that peppermint oil supplementation in endurance athletes will reduce undesirable GI symptoms that often negatively impact performance. While there may be no direct benefit to the participants, society, especially endurance athletes who participate in competitions and suffer from GI distress, might benefit from any knowledge gained, if peppermint oil is found to be beneficial. The Go! St. Louis Half Marathon/Marathon is coming up, so now is a great time,” Elizabeth said.

Don Hong recovering well after spinal surgery Best wishes to Don Hong, who underwent surgery March 10 for spinal decompression, and fusion of L1-S1 vertebrae.

“I was experiencing numbness in my legs after standing, and finally decided to do something for quality of life,” Don said. “I was released on the 13th and given instructions to walk! (March 24) I walked a mile, with walker, and did not experience any numbness. That being said, I am confident that my ambulatory days are definitely extended! Looking forward to a more active lifestyle in the future.”

Don is a past president of The Saint Louis Track Club, and was a Lifetime Achievement Winner in 2008.

Saint Louis Track Club Volunteer Opportunity The Corps of Discovery Race team is hosting a trail clean up at the Lewis and Clark Trail on Sunday, May 31st starting at 8:30 a.m.

All volunteers must sign a waiver and some light food and drinks will be provided.

If you would like to come out, please bring proper gardening tools, gloves, trash bags and any other items that may be helpful.

This will be another way to give back to the trail to keep it beautiful for all users year round. If you have any questions, please email Mike Orrico at mike.orrico@ stlouistrackclub.com.

Will growing a beard make me faster?

Q: Hey Styles, if I grow a beard, will I run faster? Also, are beards required for running ultras? – Sean G. A: You know, I have never thought of that. My day job isn’t really a fit for a beard, sadly. It does seem like the ultra beards are certainly in right now. I would think the beard may weigh a person down a little but maybe those growing them are onto something. Maybe they stash GU packets or beans in there? See what I did there? If you can, please grow one and report your finding back. Thanks.

Run, Rae, Run: A Journey to 100 Marathons

By Ryan Yoch --On April 12, Rae Mohrmann will run her 100th Marathon at the GO! St. Louis Marathon. This is an incredible achievement for Rae and all of her friends at the St. Louis Track Club wish her the very best! While this is an amazing accomplishment by itself, Rae’s “Road to 100” is also an interesting story and a lesson of perseverance for all of us.

Years before Rae was completing her last 50th State marathon in Alaska, training for one of her six Boston Marathons or signing up for the 100th at GO!, she was a high school student who wanted a chance to run cross country. The year was 1964, and Rae was a junior at Normandy High School. She and a group of friends liked to run, however, there were no track or cross country sports offered to girls. At that time, the only high school sports allowed for girls includLouisville, KY, April ed half-court basketball 2011. (dribble three times & pass), field hockey, swimming, and volleyball (no setting).

Always up for a challenge, Rae and her friends approached the cross country coach and asked if they could run with the boys. Having an open mind, the coach agreed to let the girls come out and run with the boys at practice.

The coach probably thought the girls would jog slowly behind the boys, get tired and then go home. Much to his dismay, once the practice got started the workouts turned into a heated race between the girls and the boys.

out beat a number of boys. This being the ’60s and the culture not open yet to female runners, the coach nicely thanked the girls for coming to his practice and asked them not to show up again since “he couldn’t have girls beating his boys”. This is an incredible statement to imagine a coach saying, but keep in mind that it was before Title IX opened up many more athletic opportunities for girls in high school and college.

Even in high school, Rae was already pushing the running culture envelope and following her dad’s advice to “just do it” long before it became the slogan of Nike.

Rae continued to run for fun and fitness until a TV movie in 1978 sparked the runner we all know today. The movie was called, “See How She Runs,” and starred Joanne Woodward as a 40-year-old divorced teacher whose life is changed by her decision to enter the Boston Marathon. This movie had a profound effect on Rae, and she signed up for the U City Memorial Day 5K. This was Rae’s first organized race, and she trained by running laps around her apartment building.

Over the next 18 years, Rae ran countless races, but it took a conversation with a number of ladies with our track club on New Year’s Day

in 1996 for Rae to finally listen to the little voice in her head that said, “You always wanted to run a marathon… Just do it!” At 48 years old, Rae signed up for her first marathon, the October 1996 St. Louis Track Club Marathon, and started training.

Unlike the marathon training groups we have today, Rae’s race prep consisted of doing out and backs throughout the marathon course every Saturday by herself! She completed the marathon, and from 1996 to 2015 has completed 99 marathons, with the 100th coming up April 12.

When you speak to Rae about her many running accomplishments, she is humble and lets you know that running has truly been a blessing in her life and a way to develop many cherished friendships. She says that running distances, from 5K to the marathon, has also given her the confidence and will power to handle many of life’s challenges. As the 2013 Volunteer of the Year recipient, Rae is also passionate about giving back to our sport, and she encourages everyone to volunteer and help out at races. If she isn’t teaching one of her many fitness group classes or training for a race, you

can often see Rae helping out at a track club event or volunteering at a race. Always with a smile on her face!

Will Run for Food

Balsamic chicken boosts spring veggies

Spring is the perfect time to reincorporate salads into your diet after a winter of hearty comfort food. Boost the staying power of your veggies by adding this flavor-packed balsamic chicken. It’s easy, requires a few staple ingredients, and comes together in minutes. Throw it on a salad, in a wrap with some grilled peppers, over some pasta, or even as a main course. It’s pretty much impossible to go wrong with these simple flavors.

Ingredients: •Chicken Breasts - 3 •Onion - 1/2 •Canned Diced Tomatoes - 10-14 oz •Balsamic Vinegar - ¼ cup •Garlic Salt - ½ tea •Dried Basil - ½ tea •Dried Oregano - ½ tea •Dried Thyme - ¼ tea •Ground Black Pepper - to taste Directions: 1. Cut fat off of chicken breasts and pound until a quarter-inch thick.

2. Dry rub both sides of the breasts with garlic

salt and pepper.

3. Heat olive oil in skillet.

4. Cook both sides of chicken until browned, roughly 4 minutes per side.

5. Add onion; cook and stir until onion is cooked.

6. Pour the rest of ingredients over chicken until chicken is cooked through and sauce thickens, 8 to 10 minutes.
