Runnababe Cheryl Held relaxes SLTC style after big win

While her Runnababez teammates were enjoying a beautiful day in St. Louis, Cheryl Held was hitting the beaches of Florida and dominating at the Lucky Leprechaun 10k in Fort Walton Beach. Cheryl threw down a huge win with her time of 37:21.

In November, Cheryl took third in the SLTC Half marathon in 1:21:51, and she was the top local finisher in April’s GO! Half Marathon with a time of 1:21:49.

President’s Column

One year later, we remember Boston It’s a great time of year.

Spring is here, and that brings race season. Many will be signed up for a local 5k, 10k, half or full marathon. This last weekend, St. Louis had a perfect weather for the GO! St. Louis Marathon & Family Fitness Weekend. Great job to all those who raced, and good luck to those running in some of the upcoming races!

One race that will be followed closely is this year’s Boston Marathon. The race will be a great time to celebrate the spirit of runners while also reflecting on the tragic event nearly a year ago occurring in Boston. As runners, many of us experienced that day in a way we probably cannot even explain. My personal experience was calling everyone I knew to see if all my friends running were accounted for and okay. Fortunately, none

of them were hurt, but the anger set in shortly after.

Many lives were impacted that day. It’s been remarkable how many have rallied and shown support to the victims and the city of Boston. This last week, the One Run for Boston that began in Southern California made its way through St. Louis.

The relay will finish in Boston on April 13 and supports One Fund Boston, helping those affected by the tragic event nearly a year ago. To get more information, please check out this link: http://www.onerunforboston.org/index.asp.

St. Paddy’s day brings great weather, new age group records Many Saint Louisans mark the beginning of the running season with the Saint Patrick’s Day Run in downtown St. Louis.

The 36th Michelob ULTRA St. Patrick’s Day Parade Run this year drew a crowd of over 9,000 registered runners and saw good weather.

“St. Pat’s run 2014 was full of highlights, and continued recognition throughout not only St. Louis, but the country,” said Jeffrey Promnitz, director of marketing and event development for Big River Running Company. It was ranked as one of the top three largest 5-mile races in the country by Running USA. The weather was fantastic – an uncharacteristically large number of records were set in the state of Missouri. There were eight Missouri State Age Records for 5 Miles (8K).”

The (overall) winning times, male and female, both set state age records: Matt O’Connor, 27, in 24:22 and Hillary Orf, 23, in 28:47.

Other records include Brandon Shemonia, 2nd overall, set an age 19 record in 25:12; Rick Watkins, 50, in 27:34; Jennie Weaver, 13, in 33:13; Heidi Schmidt, 47, in 31:22; and Elisa Moylan, 68, 45:12. In addition, Rae Mohrmann, who holds the 53, 54, 62, 63, 64 & 65 year-old 5 Mile (8K) records, added a 66-year age record, with 43:06 this year, Jeffrey reported.

“St. Patrick’s run had wonderful weather this year. We had lots of walkers and runners who

appreciated that,” said longtime runner/walker Alison Bourey.

Big River Running expands its South City store The Saint Louis running/walking community is experiencing growth and opportunity in South City.

“Big River’s South City location (5352 Devonshire, 63109) recently expanded and is now double the size,” announced Matt Helbig of Big River Running Company. “Big River is literally your corner, neighborhood store in the South Hampton neighborhood.

And we are so excited to have more space to provide thorough gait analysis for all of our customers and offer great products and apparel.”

“South City’s re-grand opening kicks off Saturday morning, April 12 with a fun run around South City starting at 9:30 a.m. In addition, the first 50 customers receive a Rewards Program Mystery Card with their purchase ranging from $5 Big River gift cards to free apparel and accessories. ProRehab will be onsite from 10 a.m. to noon discussing injury prevention, screenings, foam rolling, and stretching.”

“There will be bra fittings, nutrition tasting, snacks and beverages from area restaurants, and sweet prize raffles all day,” said Deb Siewing, manager at Big River South City. “We hope you’ll join us and check out our awesome new space!”

Questionable weather doesn’t stop ‘One Run for Boston’ Despite uncertain weather conditions, a contingency of Saint Louis runners participated in the Saint Louis lap of “One Run for Boston” Thursday, April 3. Tornado warning sirens had sounded prior to dawn, and thunderstorms continued throughout the day. Violent rains and hail and repeat tornado warnings came in the evening.

“We made it between the tornadoes,” said Denise Buehrer. “There was actually only a little bit of light rain.”

The relay began in Southern California on March 16, set to finish mid-April in Boston with the objective of raising money honoring the three people who were killed and 260 injured at the Boston marathon bombings last year.

The Saint Louis course was a 6-mile loop starting in Forest Park near the tennis center.

Denise said that the run was “fun,” and that she found it “supportive.”

The 13.1 Half-marathon series is run in eight metropolitan areas with very active running communities. The events have a cap on entries, are well supported, and first-timer friendly, according to Ron.

Louis Summer Olympics, won the first All-Western Marathon in 1905, and won a bronze medal at the 1908 Olympic Marathon in London. Third place winner, Chicagoan Sidney Hatch (2:38:12), competed in the 1904 St. Louis Summer Olympics and held the All-Western course record of 2:29:50 set in 1908.

The route of the All-Western Marathon actually covered more distance in Illinois than in St. Louis. The 25 mile marathon started promptly at noon at the public square in Freeburg, Ill., and continued to Belleville for about 10 miles. Runners then ran another 15 miles through Belleville on Main St. to East St. Louis and across the Eads Bridge finishing at the Missouri Athletic Club on Washington Ave. Back in 1912 this route was primarily dirt roads and cobble stone streets.

Uncle Bob and his fellow marathon runners also had their own unique marathon apparel and nutritional ideas. Joe Forshaw has been quoted about marathoning: “I wore shoes with leather soles, with a strip of rubber between the

shoe and the foot... the Boston runner Robert Fowler told me all the hints he knew about the game. He [Fowler] told me to grease my stockings and shoes with beef grease. This I did, and it prevented any blisters or sores on my feet. We followed the plan adopted at previous marathon races, eating a good breakfast of steak, following this with two raw eggs, with some tea and toast.”

Over 100 years later, runners are still giving each other advice on every aspect of running. However, I haven’t personally tried the idea of beef grease to prevent blisters, and a steak breakfast before a marathon might be a little too heavy.

As we get started on a very special marathon season, it’s nice to look back and remember the great running history that our region has created with the All-Western Marathon and appreciate the local pioneers of our sport both in St. Louis and Sourthern Illinois.

My wife has always said that I am crazy to run marathons, and now, thanks to my Uncle Bill, I have an actual medical excuse… it’s genetics.

What should I do while waiting at a stoplight?

Q: Hey Styles, what are some good excuses for skipping a run? - Mark S. A: Well, there really is never a “good excuse” for skipping a run. There are things that may come up in life that keep us from getting out there, such as family, work, flat tire, or “the dog ate my running shoes.” There will also be days when you just flat out don’t want to.

When you start making too many excuses, then maybe it’s time to step back and reevaluate your running, as it obviously not doing its job… and that is to make you happy.

Q: Hey Styles, it’s spring racing season, which means the return of the Tutus. What do you think of them? - Steph W.

A: Oh the Tutu! You definitely see more and more of them these days, especially with the increasing popularity in the “gimmick” races. When I was young playing baseball, my father, who was my coach, told me to never wear my hat backwards. He told me it was disrespectful to those before me. Will Run for Food

Easy, creamy asparagus soup

It’s April, and that means it’s not just marathon season; it’s prime asparagus season! Asparagus is filled with vital nutrients for runners, including vitamins A, C, E and K; folate; B vitamins; fiber; and a good dose of iron. It’s also crammed with antioxidants, which are vital for recovery after a hard workout or race.

This easy, creamy soup is the perfect way to enjoy the nutrient-packed veggie, especially on those spring days where there’s still a hint of chill in the air.

Prep time: 10 min.

Cook time: 15 min.

Total time: 25-30 min.

Serves: 2-4, depending on how hungry you are.

Put your stock in a pot and get it boiling. Meanwhile, peel and slice your potato. The thinner you cut it, the faster it will get soft while it’s boiling. Toss it in the pot and let it boil.

2. While the potato is boiling, chop the asparagus, discarding the dry, woody ends. If you want to get fancy, you can set aside some of the spear tips for a garnish, but I usually end up eating them all while I’m prepping. While you’re at it, chop your onion and garlic. Dump it all into the pot with the stock and potato.

3. Let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, until you can easily pierce the potato and asparagus with

4. If necessary, return the pot to heat before serving. Garnish with a dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt and a squeeze of lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy!

The Annual Picnic is coming up May 25!

The picnic is open to all members and will be at the Taco Bell shelter at Creve Coeur Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (or immediately following the spring series awards after the race). SLTC will provide the main dishes and limited beverages; attendees should bring a dish to share.

The Summer Marathon Training program is working on a schedule keep an eye out in upcoming issues for details on the group runs.

March Meeting Minutes: The March open board meeting was held at Felixâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pub, where members enjoyed a group run through Forest Park before heading inside for food, drinks and socializing. Maggie with Girls on the Run presented information on their program, and details about the spring race series were covered. February saw 64 renewals and 11 new memberships.

-Team SLTC Update: Participants are starting to pick up some steam with the spring weather and racing season finally here! Check out the website for the current standings.
