By Rohith Perla ’15 Staff Writer To the students in Form IV: that year can be quite a tough one, because you gain more responsibility, such as driving to school, and because the teachers want to prepare you for junior year. Here’s some advice for navigating the tough journey ahead: First, take as many notes as possible. In some classes, such as Catholic Doctrine, the notes would be provided, but in others, you will be on your own. No matter the circumstance, always improve upon the notes you took in class by looking at the textbook to add anything the teacher might have missed. This a good practice because more often than not, the teacher’s style of taking notes might be different from the student’s style of taking notes. The lecture notes provide a foundation, but in order to ensure success, you should build

upon that foundation. Also, index cards would not be a bad idea when studying vocabulary, because when you look at an index card, each card focuses on only one word, therefore your mind would not get distracted by the number of words you would have to learn, and, without the distraction, you can do much more work in less time. Third, do not stay up all night or even very late for the sake of studying. It is good that you would want to spend the extra time to gain a little more mastery over a given subject, but staying up late would prevent you from focusing very much in school the day after, and focus is crucial on test days. It is imperative that you study as much and as efficiently as possible for a test, but this can mean different things for different classes. On some tests you either know the answer to the question, or you don’t.

These classes will require more extensive studying and memorization. On the other hand, math and science tests required you to work questions and perform calculations during the test. In these instances, simply focussing and the concepts and doing some practice problems will serve you better than straight memorization. One last piece of advice: even when your grades are not as good as they can be, do not lose hope, because a trimester, and life, is filled with ups and downs, and you must hold onto that hope in order to get through the downs of life. You can get through your “downs” by focussing on your successes and realizing that if you can succeed in one thing, then surely you can succeed in another. Take one thing at a time. One success will lead to another, and before you know it, everything will be fine.

Trending: Hot or Not? By William O’Brien ’14 Content Editor The first week in October is upon us, which of course marks a transition of trends and fabs. If you are still trying to rock a purple suit, give up, that was so September. Of last year. But Priory is a school that is very conscientious of local trends, so without further delay let’s jump into this year’s first list. What’s Hot: 1.) Tim Bussen. This man had one hell of a September. Simply put, he is on fire. Whether it be initiating (and winning) confrontations with his fellow teachers, accepting challenges to wrestle from students, or

wearing the exact same clip-on tie every single day of the school year so far, the man has committed himself to excellence. If you have not noticed Mr. Bussen and his current hot streak, you can always check him out in the weight room working on his traps. 2.) Frat Life. Priory is an all boys school, so it is only natural that it shares some similarities with fraternity life. However, this was brought to a new level by Danny “TFTC” DeSimon, who almost singlehandedly fratted up the whole school, for better or for worse. Now Priory students can be seen wearing sunglasses indoors, wearing tanks to all

Best Things About The Homecoming Dance

kinds of events, and quoting Jimmy Tatro videos. Frat life is on fire right now. What’s Not: 1.) Neckties. The Bowtie is so hot right now, which only spells demise for it’s awkward cousin the necktie. 2.) Manny Pacquiao- Sorry gramps, it’s time to retire. Carlo Herbosa will be really disappointed, but there’s really no need for the general public to witness Floyd “Money” Mayweather sending you to the hospital on TV. That concludes the first edition of what’s hot and what’s not. Priory students, I hope you take note of this and adapt yourself to the current trends.

The Return Of Flunk, The Flying Monk! By Fr. Ralph Wright, OSB Monk INTRODUCTION Flunk the Flying Monk and his assistant Deaconess Gloria Dorne used to be regular features in The Record. Beginning in 1981 they made it their business to bring together Presidents, Heads of State and other World Leaders to congresses where the big issues of the day were debated and practical solutions suggested. Building peace globally was their calling and their passion. Today’s edition of The Record sees them planning to bring together scientists and political leaders from across the globe to Geneva for the first global congress on Weapons of Minimum Destruction (WMD) “Well, Gloria, how many people have responded to our invitation to the Weapons of Minimum Destruction conference in Geneva so far?” asked Flunk as he nonchalantly stirred his coffee and munched his vast chocolate chip cookies at the Brooklyn Panera. “About twenty so far.” replied Gloria “Three from China, three from India, four from Europe four from the African continent and six from our United States.” “That’s a bit disappointing.” said Flunk gloomily “ After all the letters you sent out. Did you get in touch with Pope Francis?” “Sure did,” said Gloria “I phoned him last night and he said he’d think and pray over it. This morning he texted me one word: ”Gladly!’ “Well thank God for that!” said Flunk brightening up a little. “So now we’re all set.” “But, but, but... (Gloria often repeated words when she was excited) .. I think we need to watch the video of the last conference we had on Weapons of Peace back in 1991

just after the close of the Gulf War. It may give us a few ideas for the conference next month in Geneva.” They turned on their laptop and settled down to watch the episode dated February 9th 1991. FLUNK AND GLORIA IN POST-GULF WAR AFTERMATH. (3.9.91) “I still think the war might have been less grizzly” said Flunk to Gloria one morning as he was sipping his coffee on a quayside in Tel Aviv. “I know that we

brought the question up unless he had some ideas brewing. “Well,” said Flunk, “maybe we should start developing a whole new style of weaponry. Instead of getting bigger and better bombs to pierce deeper and deeper into armored bunkers and laser-directed to ensure ever more amazing accuracy from ever greater distances let’s think of developing a whole range of tranquillizing pacifiers.” “I’m sorry” put in Gloria wearily “the Flunk mind has lifted off and left me. “Pacify?

lost an amazingly small number of lives for the size of the operation but, that one dictator can lead his own people into such a predicament so that over a hundred thousand of them die” well, I just think ther3e has to be a better way.” “Well you did all you could with the funfair project” Gloria replied soothingly. “If people decide not to talk to one another face to face there’s really not much we can do about it. Don’t forget our whole approach from the Goldfissioonbluechip Inn to the Hammurabi Tarantula Carousel depends on at least a willingness for this.” “I know, I know” Flunk retorted impatiently “but in this new era of United Nations Effective Peacekeeping (UNEP) isn’t there a way to reduce the slaughter?” “What have you obviously crystalizing in the Flunk mind?” asked Gloria knowing that he would not have

Please clarify.” “Well, said Flunk “look at the arsenals. We may not be tossing nuclears around but the Scuds and Patriots and Sams and are still heavily into eliminating people. Yet when It comes down to peacekeeping we need to think in more police-type terms.” “Wodjamean police-type terms? You’re beginning to enjoy being obscure.” “It’s really quite simple, Gloria. A policeman on duty attempts to stop a burglary using minimum violence. If he shoots an obviously unarmed burglar dead, he may even be charged for it, especially if the burglar is a teenager. The Flunk Anti-War Missile Company (FAMCO) would be involved in research and development of weaponry that would be designed to put the assailant/ aggressor temporarily out of commission. without killing him. We would be specialists

6. Music Selections

in minimum violence. Amongst our weaponry would be weapons like the 24 hour laserdirected paralysis bullet. This bullet when released by a pistol that need only be pointed like a camera-viewfinder at the target, embeds itself in a convenient portion of the would-be aggressor’s anatomy and injects a fluid that causes immediate temporary paralysis. The TPB (Temporary Paralysis Bullet) produces complete blackout and the person falls to the ground. At this point the policeman will handcuff the would-be assailant and when he recovers consciousness 24 hours later he is safely in jail.” “Sounds too good to be true” said Gloria. “Dream on, my friend, tell me more!” “Besides this,” Flunk went on eagerly, “ there are a whole set of BCW (Benign Chemical Weapons) that are just waiting to be developed. There is the HRII, this is Hysteria Rain that exploding from a simple tear gas canister will produce a fine mist that can infect with 2 hour hysteria all who breathe it in. Then there is the GB24, or Gloom Boom, virus which produces a depression-type inertia which makes anyone infected by it lie down and suffer a compulsive urge to sleep for at least 24 hours.. All these and many more are just waiting to be produced by those who are tired of having to kill people to restore law and order and are seeking new ways of controlling violence of any kind in non-lethal ways.” “Why don’t you go and put the whole thing before the U.N.” broke in Gloria who was getting dazed and frustrated. “and see what they think.” At this point Gloria turned off her laptop with its rerecording of the 22 year old video and the two of them took off in their different directions.

Soccer Returns to St. Louis (Again)

Stuco Status

By George Ahlering ’16 Staff Writer

• The Junior School Mixer is TONIGHT. Junior School, get your last minute tickets this afternoon.

On Tuesday morning, Relevant Sports and Busch Stadium officials announced that soccer would return to St. Louis for the third time this year. However, this time it will be played by national, World Cup caliber teams. The first two games drew hordes of people and nearly sold out both venues. Manchester City vs. Chelsea at Busch Stadium drew 48,263 fans and the Real Madrid vs. Inter Milan game at the Edward Jones Dome drew 54,814. This, needless to say, has reflected very well on St. Louis and the possibility of a MLS team debuting here in the future. The game is set to feature

Argentina and BosniaHerzegovina on November 18 at 7:30pm. Argentina is led by captain Lionel Messi, one of the best players ever in soccer history. Messi, who also plays for FC Barcelona, is accompanied by superstars Sergio Aguero (Manchester City), Angel Di Maria (Real Madrid), and Gonzalo Higuain (Napoli). Edin Dzeko (Manchester City), Miralem Pjanic (Roma), and Vedad Ibisevic (a former St. Louis University player) lead the Bosnian side. Messi, who is currently injured, must play in the match due to the contract between Argentina and Relevant Sports. He is scheduled to make full recovery with a few weeks before the game. Per the contract,

both teams also have to qualify for the 2014 World Cup. Argentina recently qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but Bosnia has not yet qualified. If Bosnia doesn’t qualify before the game, another opponent will be chosen. Tickets are set to go on presale October 8th and on sale to the general public October 10th at 10am. This match will again bring some of the greatest players in the world to St. Louis to showcase their football prowess. I highly recommend that you attend this game if at all possible (even if it may be a bit cold) because this will be a unique opportunity to see the greatest players in the world in action.

• Remember, the advisory who brings the most people will win a food day courtesy of STUCO. • STUCO would like to thank everyone who came out to the bonfire and homecoming dance, it was a great time! • If you have not picked up your Marty Party Tank or Enjoy Priory T-Shirt, please contact a STUCO representative to do so. • Viz Carnival is October 5th, and goes from noon until 10pm. The mixer there starts at 7:30. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Another Cardinal Postseason Run By Charlie Lohmann ’14 Contributor October has arrived, and with it comes yet another appearance in the postseason by the Cardinals. It’s nothing new in St. Louis, in fact, we’ve become used to it. The Rams are terrible (no surprise), and the Blues season has just begun. But for us St. Louisans, the Cardinals are all we have for playoff excitement. The Blues never make it past the first round, even though they might be heavy favorites. The words “Rams” and “playoffs” don’t even go in the same sentence. But almost every year, the Cardinals are in a pennant race, and this year proves no different. So as the MLB postseason starts up, how will the Cardinals do? Just look at key aspects of the team, and you will see that another deep run in the playoffs lays ahead for the Redbirds.

First of all, the bullpen. Mujica’s recent struggles and fall from the closer spot have worried everyone it seems except for Mike Matheny. He simply replaced the Chief with fireballer Trevor Rosenthal, a Rookie of the Year candidate. While Rosenthal lacks experience in big games, his catcher more than makes up for that. Molina’s ability to call a game and mentor young, talented pitchers will make the bullpen solid. When the Cards do get in trouble, all they will need to do is put in Seth Maness. The kid is a double-play ball machine. Also, the recent addition of veteran John Axford will bring more experience to a young bullpen, and if needed, he can be an effective closer. Clutch hitting has defined the Cardinals not only this year, but in recent postseason history. This year, the Cardinals hit .330 with RISP, and almost .330

with RISP and 2 outs. Ridiculous? Yes. Unusual for the Cardinals? No. Allen Craig has been Mr. Clutch for the past few years, but when it comes to the postseason most Cardinal hitters transform into clutch hitters. David Freese, Allen Craig, Lance Berkman, Daniel Descalso, and Pete Kozma: all with the exception of Berkman were young players in the postseason that provided the most clutch hits. This year, with the likes of should-be-MVP Matt Carpenter and Matt Adams, will be no different. The Cardinals also have been to the postseason ten times since 2000. They have veterans such as Wainwright, Beltran, and Molina, but even the young players like Kozma and Freese have postseason experience. They know how to win important games and how to handle the pressure of the postseason. Just look at the

4. No rain

Cardinals players’ reactions when they clinched a postseason berth this year. Nothing happened. The players just sat in the clubhouse, texting and watching a football game. Meanwhile, when Pittsburgh clinched a playoff spot, they acted like they had already won the World Series. The Pittsburgh Pretenders have won two postseason games in the past twenty years. The Cardinals have won eighteen in the last two years. Now, I won’t make any outrageous predictions like a certain classmate of mine (hint: his fantasy running backs are horrible). But I will say that even though the Cardinals are young, they are poised to make another deep run into the postseason. To the World Series? I don’t know, but it wouldn’t surprise me or anyone else.

TE L E VI SI ON AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D and Brooklyn Nine-Nine Review By Patrick Shanahan ’17 Staff Writer Marvel’s Agents of Shield Pilot Review (Starring Clark Gregg, Brett Dalton, Ming-Na Wen, Elizabeth Henstridge, Ian de Caestecker and Chloe Bennet); TV-PG Marvel’s Agents of Shield is a truly ambitious project set on expanding the Marvel’s offerings, which includes such films as Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Avengers, by telling the tales of the men and women who work behind the scenes. Joss Whedon is overseeing this new show, which is always a good sign. But will the big names and budget of the Marvel movies be able to translate over to the small screen? The answer is no, but that’s ok.. The TV show has only a small fraction of the budget that was used to make the big name Marvel movies you see in theatres. But that was kind of the point. I think Marvel and Disney wanted to prove that they could be successful in telling smaller stories that didn’t need to involve global terrorism or alien invasions. And ultimately,

they succeeded, but not without a few hiccups in the show’s pilot. You can tell from the very beginning that Marvel and Whedon made this show by just listening to the dialogue. The wisecracks and attitude coming from the characters’ mouths feel natural and organic. The editing is seamless, and the show is just generally well made, given its budget. The performances are, for the most part, pretty good. Brett Dalton and Ming-Na Wen (as Grant Ward and Melinda May, respectively) gave more serious performances as high-ranking officials in the Shield organizations, though Dalton proved he can make a decent gag every once in a while. Henstridge and de Caestecker were decent as the bickering rookie scientists Jemma Simmons and Leo Fitz, though they weren’t spectacular. And the super-powered anti hero, played by J. August Richards, gave a very convincing and sympathetic performance. But it was Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson that stole every scene. His jokes were perfectly timed and hilarious and there was an intriguing mystery surrounding his character that

makes me want to keep watching. However, this show is far from perfect. Agents of Shield can be incredibly corny at times. There were numerous times where I found myself rolling my eyes at how bad it was. This can be largely contributed to the performance of Chloe Bennett as Skye. Sometimes it seemed as if the other actors were trying to overshadow her horribly annoying performance and cheesiness. It was that bad. But overall, I enjoyed the pilot for Marvel’s Agents of Shield. Despite its flaws, I have to admit that I am excited to see where this show goes in the future. 7/10. Brooklyn Nine-Nine Pilot Mini-Review TV-14 Let’s get this out of the way: Brooklyn Nine-Nine is hilarious. The jokes in this pilot alone had me laughing consistently throughout the show’s 21-minute runtime. Jake Peralta (The Lonely Island’s Andy Samberg) is the hotshot young detective that shines with his sleuthing skills,

but has never really grown up. Daily, he competes with Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) in bets regarding their skills at the crime-scene. Meanwhile, lovable loser Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) consistently strikes out with chronically angry Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz). Terry Crews also stars as terrified once-super cop Terry Jeffords, as does Chelsea Peretti as Gina Linetti, the socially awkward desk worker. All of these actors perform their characters hilariously, with not a single gag missing the mark. Of course, as it usually does in these kinds of stories, their old, carefree Captain has been replaced by Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher), a nononsense workhorse with a surprisingly interesting backstory. And the results are hilarious (UNBELIEVABLE.). While the plot may be light and the budget small, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is hilarious in its writing and well acted, which is all you can really ask from a show like this. And it’s faring much better than Fox’s other big name comedy, Dads (which, had I reviewed it, would have scored a whopping 2/10). 8.5/10 for Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Football Update: We Wear Big Helmets Part VI By Stephen Clark ’14 Football Captain Last weekend was Homecoming at Priory. After a spiritfilled week and a string of strong practices, the Rebels came out ready to play against fellow Metro-League rival

Westminster, who is ranked fourth in the state for Class 4 football. Both defenses played strongly the first half, and the Rebels only allowed one score through two quarters. The Priory offense moved the ball well but failed to score for two quarters; the team reached the red

zone twice but did not capitalize. Both teams came out strong for the second half, and the Rebels got their first score and continued to play well, reaching a score of 18-17 Rebels with two minutes to play. However, the Wildcats did not roll over. After marching down the field

on a well-executed drive, the Wildcats set up for a 40 yard field goal with .7 seconds left. Barely reaching the uprights, the kick was good and the Rebels lost a heartbreaker. Come out this weekend at 2:00 at Priory for Senior Day against Lutheran South.

MUSIC What Happened in Hip Hop By Spencer Wright ’14 Staff Writer Hello everyone, it feels so good to be back. This is your boy Speez coming to you live from The Record Weekly. This summer was exciting for hip hop fans. Heavy weights Kanye and Hov dropped their long awaited solo albums, with the likes of Wale, J Cole, and Mac Miller dropping their solo projects as well. With so much album release excitement and hectic touring during the hot months, September is usually a cool down time, allowing bloggers to catch up on their sleep. However, this September did not follow suit. Here’s my take on what happened this month in Hip Hop.

Disappointment: Album: Nothing Was the Same Artist: Drake In August Kendrick Lamar dropped a verse on Big Sean’s song Control that called out every rapper in hip hop and told them to step their game up. He has every right to say this, considering his debut album Good Kid m.A.A.d. City is platinum and already receiving “classic” status. Drake was the biggest name in hip hop before K. Dot dropped this gem. In my opinion Drake needed to drop a classic of his own in order to remind everyone why he was on top, and I feel like he failed to do this. At the tail end of this

month Drake dropped his third solo album Nothing Was The Same, following the huge commercial success from 2011 that was Take Care. Over all it is not a bad album. There are a few songs on here that I really enjoyed, like Tuscan Leather, Wu Tang Forever (has nothing to do with Wu Tang, honestly kind of disrespectful), and Pound Cake (featuring Jay-Z who is definitely in the winter of his career after hearing that verse). The fact that I have serious problems with some of my favorite tracks on the album shows that this was not what I was expecting.

Pleasant Surprise: Album: Kiss Land Artsist: The Weeknd The Weeknd is known for being very mysterious and making very good music. In 2011 the Toronto vocalist released 3 of the best mixtapes of the year, then in 2012 rereleased all the mixtapes together as one album called Trilogy and has nearly sold 150,00 copies, which is impressive considering all the music is legally free on virtually any music sharing site out there. Kiss Land is his first album with a major record label and he really delivers. I thought the mainstream attention and newfound fame would taint this young artist’s music but he sticks to that which he is good. The Weeknd’s style can only be classified as “Michael Jackson-

Expected Greatness: Album: Old Artist: Danny Brown If you look past his illicit habits and his half shaven head, Danny Brown is a phenomenal artsit. His 2011 album XXX was critically acclaimed and didn’t receive a single negative review, many said it was arguably the best album of the year. This rapper from Detroit brings everything to the table in his sophomore album Old. With features artists from Purity Ring to A$AP Rocky, Danny Brown is breaking down barriers between indie hip hop hipsters and the main stream music lovers. This album is definitely worth your time, I promise you will not be disappointed. These were just some of the highlights and low lights from this month in hip hop. I look forward to keeping you all very informed in everything that is music from here on out, and hopefully by next week you will get to hear my take on what many are saying will be the album of the year: My Name Is My Name by Pusha T.

Teacher Restaurant Review By Alex Hill '15 Staff Writer This week, I asked four teachers what their favorite restaurants in the St. Louis area were and why they liked these restaurants. I found it somewhat surprising that all four of them gave me different responses. Here's what they had to say: Mr. O'Connell- My favorite place to eat is The Iron Barley in South City. The Slinger's the meal for me, but they have plenty of specials. Their Slinger is steak, spinach, and “secret sauce,” topped with a fried egg. To die for. Also, I highly recommend the Duck salad: smoked duck breast on a bed of grilled Romaine lettuce and a secret recipe dressing. Ask for a spoon so you can scoop up every drop of the dressing. Finally, for dessert, try their cheese cake with a jalapeno topping. Don't be put off by the looks of the place. If the weather is nice, there is a patio in the back (just follow the narrow sidewalk down the creepy

side of the building) and if it is crowded, just ask to eat in the basement...watch your step on the way down. There's usually live music too. Mr. Orlando- Picking a favorite St. Louis restaurant is difficult (there are so many good ones!) but one of the best for dinner is Lombardo's Trattoria downtown near Union Station. It can be a bit pricey if you get the entrees but you don't need to get an entree to get the best of what they have to offer-a side salad and their homemade toasted ravioli off the appetizer menu will fill you up for sure. These are not your square, processed ravioli-each serving has five ravioli and they are about the size of a large red potato; the dough and filling are made fresh daily. My grandpa introduced me to Lombardo's, and whenever I go there I think of him. Hank- My favorite restaurant in Saint Louis is Cunetto's which is located on the Hill. The Northern Italian cuisine is delicious and plentiful-often

enough to have significant leftovers for a late night snack. The prices and reasonable and the service is friendly and efficient. It also has excellent take out service. Four stars from Hank! And we have Mr. Muench, whose reply was short, sweet, and to the point: I like the smoked pork steaks at 2 Dudes Bar BQ in Warrenton, MO. Several of the baseball players have eaten there and enjoyed the experience. I, Alex, recommend Annie Gunn's in Chesterfield Valley (yes, Liam, I'm endorsing your restaurant). My favorite item on the menu is the Tomahawk Steak, which is basically just a gigantic steak that is still on the bone. It's definitely enough for two people, and if you get it for yourself, you will have some leftovers to box up and eat. If you're feeling in the mood to try some new restaurants, I recommend that you try one of these culinary establishments that your teachers enjoy.

#PrioryXC #Sweatbands By Daniel Martin ’14 Cross Country Captain Cross country has been on a tear recently. At Jefferson Barracks last weekend for the Hancock Invitational, they pulled off a fourth place finish out of over 20 teams. Unfortunately, this included a tough loss to MICDS, but you will find the team training hard this week and next for Priory's own race next weekend. To all the great readers of this fine publication, I apologize for the shortness of the

update. I know you wanted to hear lots more about Priory cross country. But, to take a page from a certain other sport's playbook, we were too busy focused on winning to write an exceptional article. Until next time, #PrioryXC #sweatbands. “Every time I put on my sweatband, and listen to my tunes, I feel like I can run 10x faster” - Thomas Lowell
