Green and sustainable
As the first country in the world to be declared a Global Green Destination, Slovenia continues to lead the way in sustainable tourism. Slovenia has long been a pioneer in sustainable tourism. In 2016, it became the first country in the world to be declared a Global Green Destination following a comprehensive assessment by the international organisation Green Destinations. At the heart of this commitment is the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism, a nationally coordinated certification programme operating since 2014. Internationally recognised as a model of good practice, the scheme brings together more than 300 destinations and tourism providers under the Slovenia Green label, encouraging continuous improvements in sustainability across the tourism sector. Slovenia’s commitment to sustainability also extends to gastronomy. In 2021, when the country held the title of European Region of Gastronomy, the Slovenia Green Cuisine label was introduced to recognise restaurants committed to local and seasonal ingredients, short supply chains, waste
reduction and responsible resource management. Several Slovenian restaurants also received the Michelin Green Star, a distinction that, although discontinued in 2026, remains an important recognition of their pioneering approach to sustainable gastronomy. This legacy continues through initiatives such as Slovenia Green Cuisine, connecting culinary excellence with environmental responsibility, local producers and the preservation of culinary traditions. Rich in natural water resources, Slovenia is also renowned for the quality of its drinking water. In 2016, it became the first EU country to enshrine the right to drinking water in its Constitution, recognising water as a public good. The country’s commitment to environmental protection is also reflected in tourism initiatives aimed at reducing single-use plastics, encouraging more responsible consumption and preserving natural resources for future generations.

Spring is the feeling of new beginnings Spring in Slovenia bursts forth with joyful carnival traditions, meadows humming with bees and towns awakening to music, laughter and open-air celebrations. It’s a season of renewal – but one you can rediscover any time of year.
16
Summer is the rhythm of joy Slovenia’s summer beats to the sound of festivals, openair concerts and long sunlit evenings by lakes, rivers and the sea. Its warmth can be felt throughout the year: on a cycling trail, at a local food market, or in the laughter shared beneath the moonlight. Here, summer is not a season – it’s a state of mind.
The right moment is yours to choose The seasons may turn in their own rhythm – but in Slovenia, you can dance to yours. Take time off not when the calendar tells you, but when your heart does. Let spring’s renewal surprise you in autumn. Let summer’s energy carry you through winter. Toast to autumn’s abundance in spring and dream of winter’s glow even beneath the summer sun. Because in Slovenia, the seasons aren’t defined by dates – they’re defined by feelings.
Forests turn golden, the scent of roasted chestnuts fills the air and vineyards come alive with the harvest. Festivals celebrate the new wine and cooler nights invite quiet reflection and cultural indulgence. The feeling of autumn – its calm, its depth, its gratitude – lingers through every season.
Winter is a fairytale with a warm heart Winter here sparkles – in the snowy peaks of the Alps, in the laughter of skiers, in the festive glow of towns wrapped in light. Yet its magic isn’t limited to cold days. You can feel it in the salty coastal breeze, in the warmth of a sauna, in the crackle of a fireplace at a countryside homestead.

Remarkable thermal and mineral waters Among Slovenia's most remarkable waters are the black thermo-mineral water, rich in organic substances and minerals that trace their origins to the ancient Pannonian Sea, surfacing at a soothing temperature of 72 degrees Celsius, and the green paraffin thermal water, which envelops the skin in a gentle embrace, providing an exceptionally comforting experience. Drinking thermal water is woven into daily rituals and therapeutic practices across Slovenia, also renowned for its two celebrated mineral waters: Donat Mg, distinguished by its exceptionally high natural magnesium content, and Radenska tri srca, recognized for its abundant natural carbon dioxide. Both waters have successfully cultivated a centuries-old legacy and continue to thrive in international markets, showcasing Slovenia's rich heritage of wellness and health.
The power and beauty of mud Balneotherapy, the therapeutic use of natural healing elements for the treatment and prevention of various ailments, has long embraced fango—a mineral-rich, therapeutic mud. Fango wraps are not only powerful anti-inflammatories, but they also soothe the body and accelerate healing. One of the most intriguing fango therapies in Slovenia is the one with black thermomineral mud found deep within the Pannonian Plain. The legend has it that its remarkable healing properties were first uncovered by a herder suffering from rheumatism. News of his recovery spread rapidly and captivated the local community. This ultimately led to the establishment of one of Slovenia's renowned natural spas on the very site of the herder's recovery. Today, scientific research has confirmed its effectiveness. Various types of therapeutic muds and locally sourced mineral poloids are integral to the treatments offered at nearly all natural spas in Slovenia.
Breathing in health and well-being Why is it so much easier to take a deep breath by the sea or in a pine forest? The answer lies in aerosols – tiny droplets of salt, minerals, plant essential oils and other natural compounds that fill the air, promoting easier breathing, reducing inflammation in the airways and soothing irritated mucous membranes. Already ancient Greeks and Romans recognized the respiratory benefits of coastal environments. The advantages of inhalation for respiratory health have been acknowledged since the early days of spa tourism. In the 20th century, as awareness of the health benefits of aerosols grew, also thanks to innovative methods of creating aerosols from healing waters and other natural substances, spas began to offer specialized inhalation therapies. In Slovenia, aerosols play a vital role in thalassotherapy at spas along the Adriatic Sea, where the use of mud and water from salt pans has been a well-established practice for health care since the 13th century.
Dating back to the 18th century, doctors have long recommended holidays by the sea or in mountain health resorts. In Slovenia, you can select from natural spas that offer the calming Mediterranean or mountain climate, as well as locations with a continental climate, where the surrounding forests and renowned spa parks contribute to exceptionally clean air.

Six Reasons to Visit Slovenia's Natural Health Resorts and Spas Wellbeing has been an integral part of life in Slovenia for centuries. The country's oldest health resort has been welcoming guests for more than 600 years. Slovenia also ranks second in the European Union for life satisfaction. Yet wellbeing is about more than statistics, and what makes life fulfilling is deeply personal. For some, it means moving without pain, enjoying restful sleep or spending quality time with family. For others, it is simply about rediscovering their own rhythm.
Wellbeing
For Balance and Peace of Mind Slovenia's natural health resorts offer the ideal setting to reconnect with yourself. Thermal waters, massages, saunas, wellness treatments, movement, nature, restful sleep and nourishing food come together to restore a sense of balance that lasts beyond your stay. It is an opportunity to release tension and bring body and mind back into harmony. Slower mornings, mindful movement, the soothing embrace of water and time away from everyday demands create space for genuine relaxation. Here, wellbeing goes beyond pampering to become a holistic experience tailored to individual needs. For those seeking to slow down, breathe more deeply and rediscover what makes them feel good, Slovenia offers the perfect escape.
Longevity
For Lasting Health and Vitality
22
Living a long and fulfilling life begins with looking after your health before the need for change becomes urgent. Preventive health checks, diagnostic assessments, expert guidance and personalised programmes focusing on movement, nutrition, sleep, recovery, stress management and cognitive wellbeing can all contribute to healthy ageing. Investing in wellbeing means investing in more years of good health, vitality and fulfilment. It is a different kind of luxury – one that is not simply about living longer, but living better. An approach to life for anyone who wants to look to the future with confidence, whatever their age.
After an injury, surgery or when managing chronic pain, recovery requires more than rest alone. Slovenia's natural health resorts provide a supportive environment where carefully planned movement, specialist rehabilitation and professional guidance help guests regain confidence in their bodies. Physiotherapy, balneotherapy, therapeutic exercise in thermal water and individually tailored rehabilitation programmes can help relieve pain, improve mobility and support a gradual return to everyday activities.
Active Thermal Holidays
Rehabilitation

For Active Days and Restful Moments Begin the day with the promise of a new adventure, explore local stories and landscapes, then unwind in warm thermal waters. Slovenia's natural health resorts make excellent bases for hiking, cycling, golf and discovering historical towns, cultural treasures and regional cuisine. With everything close at hand, there is more time to enjoy each experience. An active day need never feel exhausting. Back at the resort, thermal pools, saunas, massages and restorative rest offer the perfect balance. It is a holiday where activity and relaxation go hand in hand, ideal for couples, families and friends who enjoy exploring at their own pace.
Slovenia's natural health resorts invite all generations to enjoy the playful side of water. Indoor and outdoor thermal pools, exhilarating waterslides, children's water playgrounds, lazy rivers and interactive attractions offer plenty of opportunities for fun, whatever the weather.
Sometimes, the greatest luxury is having the time and space to switch off. In Slovenia, notifications give way to birdsong, screen time to woodland walks, and the pressure of constant connectivity to the soothing warmth of thermal waters. Unhurried walks, moments of silence, leisurely meals, time in nature and restorative sleep offer a welcome opportunity to clear the mind and reconnect with yourself and those who matter most. A digital detox is more than putting your phone away – it is about being fully present and rediscovering the simple pleasures of life.

Every Day Brings Something to Celebrate More than 25,000 events, 160 festivals and over 1,000 exhibitions – Slovenia’s cultural calendar is full of life. Alongside, towns and villages come alive with festivals, open-air celebrations and events in unexpected settings. From seasonal festivities and centuries-old customs to contemporary art and cultural happenings, Slovenia brings together living traditions and modern creativity.
Summoning spring Kurentovanje in Ptuj is one of Europe’s oldest and most vibrant Shrovetide festivals. The door-to-door rounds of the kurenti are an intangible cultural heritage protected by UNESCO, and the days when the kurenti chase away winter with their masks, bells and dance unite the community in a unique way. The Carnival in Cerknica brings to life the mythological characters and legends of Slovenian tradition while commenting on current social reality in a satirical manner. Every six years, during the run-up to Easter, the Škofja Loka Passion Play, the largest street play based on the oldest Slovenian dramatic text, is staged in Škofja Loka. The play, which is inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, will be performed again in 2026.
The beauty of summer
The kurent, also known as the korant, is one of Slovenia’s most recognisable traditional carnival characters. With its distinctive costume and bells, it is believed to chase away evil and bring good fortune and happiness. Ptuj, Slovenia 24
Jurjevanje in Bela krajina attracts groups from all over the world to the oldest folklore festival in Slovenia. The reviving of Green George, who brings blessings for a good harvest, is associated in Črnomelj with musical performances, art exhibitions, handicraft fairs and cuisine. Also drawing attention to the unique beauty of old skills at the beginning of summer is the Idrija Lace Festival in Idrija, a UNESCO world heritage site. In September, as summer slowly draws to a close, the Days of National Costumes and Clothing Heritage in Kamnik reveal a world of traditional clothing culture and textile crafts. When shepherds return home from the high-Alpine pastures with their livestock, they are welcomed by events such as the Cows' Ball in Bohinj.
Goodies of autumn Wine-producing regions celebrate their festivals in autumn, when the must turns into wine. Around 11 November, on St Martin's Day, celebrations of this feast day, called martinovanje, are held all around Slovenia. The largest public martinovanje is held in Maribor, the city of the oldest vine in the world, which also has a festival of its own. Wine and food, musical performances and the traditional baptism ofthe must are accompanied by events related to wine and cultural heritage and an attractive selection of traditional St Martin's Day’s dishes. Also popular in autumn are festivals and celebrations of other crops and delicacies, such as the prosciutto and teran festival, chestnut days, pumpkin festival, and the festival of persimmon or golden apple.
Winter festivities When the days are at their shortest, Slovenian towns, squares and villages are festooned with festive lights. In larger cities, the atmosphere of Advent is created by fairs, concerts and other events, while in smaller towns, revivals of various customs and nativity scene displays extend an open invitation to visitors. The staging of living nativity scenes has been captivating visitors to the Postojna Cave since 1989. The international jury of the Christmas Cities Network, which is supported by the European Parliament, has declared Celje, which also captivates the youngest with its Fairytale Land, as the European Christmas City 2025. Every Christmas, the Legend of the Sunken Bell is performed at the main beach of Lake Bled. Traditional blessings of horses are held in many places across Slovenia on St Stephen's Day (26 December). At the beginning of each year, dives, swims and dips in the cold lakes and rivers and the sea are also enjoyed.

A country committed to preserving world heritage Safeguarding heritage, minimizing its negative impacts and ensuring that local communities can coexist with it in a meaningful way are fundamental principles of sustainable management –including in tourism. Therefore, it is essential to understand and – where possible – respectfully experience natural and cultural sites while also exploring and supporting intangible heritage, which UNESCO recognizes as a vital part of our global legacy.

Lipica Stud Farm, the cradle of the white Lipizzaner horses, the largest Lipizzaner stud farm in the world and the oldest European stud farm, is celebrating 446 years of continuous operation
Slovenia’s UNESCO treasures The Škocjan Caves became Slovenia’s first UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986. Among the country’s 15,000 registered karst caves, they stand out for housing one of the largest underground canyons in the world. The caves lie at the heart of a protected park featuring a dramatic river canyon, educational trails showcasing karst phenomena and traditional stone-built karst architecture. This remarkable landscape is best experienced up close, while Slovenia’s other UNESCO-listed natural heritage requires a more respectful, hands-off approach. The primeval beech forests of Europe, represented in Slovenia by the Krokar and Snežnik-Ždrocle forest reserves, remain untouched to preserve their ecological integrity. Alongside these natural wonders, Slovenia’s heritage is further safeguarded by the transboundary UNESCO Global Geoparks of Karavanke and Idrija. In Idrija – the city of mercury and lace – you can embark on a journey through UNESCO’s world cultural heritage, whose significance reaches far beyond Slovenia’s borders. For centuries, Idrija was home to the world’s second-largest mercury mine, which, together with Spain’s Almadén, is inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. Here, visitors can explore the mine and discover the fascinating properties of this unusual liquid metal through interactive and modern exhibits. Idrija is also renowned for its delicate lace-making tradition (recognized as UNESCO intangible heritage). Equally remarkable are the prehistoric pile dwellings of the Ljubljana Marshes, part of a network of ancient settlements around the Alps. Moreover, the world’s oldest wooden wheel with an axle was discovered there and is now displayed in a museum in the heart of Slovenia’s capital, a city renowned for its urban design.
Slovenia’s intangible heritage

Slovenians take great pride in their rich heritage of traditional skills, many of which hold global significance and are recognised on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List. One of the most cherished traditions is beekeeping. The country is dotted with apiaries housing the indigenous Carniolan honeybee, a symbol of Slovenia’s beekeeping legacy. Slovenians were pioneers of modern beekeeping in Europe and their deep respect for bees extends into cultural expressions and the use of bee products for healing. It was at Slovenia’s initiative that the UN declared 20 May – the birthday of Anton Janša, Europe’s first beekeeping teacher – as World Bee Day. Slovenia, together with UNESCO, recognises the unique cultural significance of midwifery, an age-old profession closely linked to the birth of new life. The country’s first midwifery school was established as early as 1753. Other elements of Slovenia’s intangible heritage, celebrated on a global scale, are deeply rooted in specific regions. These include lacemaking and its historic schools, the art of dry-stone construction in the Karst and Istria, the vibrant parades of Kurents in and around Ptuj and the Škofja Loka Passion Play, the largest street performance of its kind, featuring over 900 participants in the medieval town’s atmospheric streets. The Pohorje–Kozjak Trail is one of Slovenia's exciting new additions for 2026, named by the BBC among the world's five most anticipated new hiking trails. This 187-kilometre circular route connects Maribor, the forested Pohorje Hills and the quieter, less-explored Kozjak range. Cyclists can now enjoy a continuous 28-kilometre route linking two of Slovenia's most iconic Alpine lakes, Bled and Bohinj. Most of the trail is separated from road traffic, following the scenic Sava Bohinjka River. Another highlight is Štrekna, a 35-kilometre cycling trail along a former railway line between Velenje and Dravograd. With its gentle gradients, tunnels, bridges and viaducts, it has become one of Slovenia's most popular family-friendly cycling routes.

Heroes of Slovenian sustainable gastronomy “Field to fork cuisine is second nature to Slovenians, making the country a perfect place to indulge in a passion for food and drink. From the Mediterranean to the mountains, unique culinary delights await.” National Geographic, 2024
The red bible of world gastronomy In 2024, Ana Roš’s Hiša Franko achieved the remarkable distinction of earning three Michelin stars, joining an elite group of only 145 establishments worldwide. At the same time, Chef David Žefran earned two Michelin stars for his exceptional Milka restaurant in Kranjska Gora. Across Slovenia, a total of eight restaurants have been honoured with one Michelin star and eight have received a Green Star, celebrating their unwavering commitment to sustainable practices. Additionally, ten Slovenian restaurants proudly carry the Bib Gourmand label, recognized by the Michelin Guide for their outstanding value. Many of these establishments also offer charming boutique accommodations.
From garden to table Both high-end restaurants and traditional Slovenian gostilnas – often family-run establishments serving authentic local dishes – proudly embrace the use of fresh, seasonal ingredients, predominantly sourced from organic producers. Many of these restaurants cultivate their own gardens to supply herbs and spices, while most rely on produce from nearby farmers, beekeepers, dairy producers and other local suppliers. For a more direct experience, visitors can also head to tourist farms, where dishes are crafted using ingredients grown on-site, deeply ingrained in the farm’s very essence. Slovenian gastronomy is deeply rooted in the from-farm-to-table philosophy, which yields dishes that not only celebrate fresh, local ingredients but also maintain a notably low carbon footprint. Over 60 restaurants have earned the Slovenia Green label, a prestigious certification that aligns with the broader initiative of promoting sustainable tourism under the Slovenia Green concept. This label signifies a commitment to responsible resource management, short supply chains, connecting with local producers and a dedication to raising awareness about the importance of sustainable food practices.
