Slovenia’s rich tradition and love for winter sports is reflected in the successful organization of many world and European sports events.

What’s up?

Planica Planica hosting the Cross-country Skiing World Cup Planica is perhaps the most famous for its ski jumping competitions, but it has always been a place with a spirit for all Nordic disciplines. Now that the new Nordic centre was built and Planica has applied as a candidate to organise the Nordic World Ski Championship in 2021, it is time for Planica to host the Cross-country Skiing World Cup competition. Everybody visiting this picturesque valley, which is particularly magnificent this time of year, will have the opportunity to watch exciting competitions in various cross-country skiing disciplines. ROGLA WORLD CUP Sports holiday at Rogla In the idyllic environment of Zreško Pohorje, where winter has been generous with natural snow in recent years, lies Rogla, at an altitude of 1,517 metres. Diverse activities that take place on white slopes are additionally spiced up by international competitions. After hosting FIS Cross-country World Cup competitions in 2009 and 2011, Rogla also became known as a venue for the FIS Snowboarding World Cup competitions. During the Slovenian sports holiday, a diverse programme is carried out at Rogla with the FIS competition as a central event at which around 120 snowboarders from more than 20 countries worldwide measure

their skills against each other. An exciting competition at which the sizeable Slovenian team also competes, attracts several thousand visitors who come to watch the event on-site, while it is followed on TV by almost 20 million people globally. Ljubno ob Savinji Ljubno is in the air Ljubno lies halfway between Ljubljana and Maribor, in the upper Savinja Valley – the gateway to the beautiful Logar Valley. It is said to be the smallest place on Earth that hosts World Cup competitions. Almost every house takes part in preparing this annual event in this village by the Savinja River, where a colourful heritage of raftsmen and abundant hospitality can be found. No wonder the best women jumpers in the world feel at home here every year. Ski jumping has been present in Ljubno since long before world-class jumpers started visiting. Now that the entire world is watching ski jumps under the Rajhovka peak, the competition is a welcome awakening during winters that can often get grey and sleepy. When the rumbling of snow cannons starts echoing and bright spotlights are lit up in the Savina hamlet near Ljubno, excitement erupts. GOLDEN FOX Back in 1964, Pohorje and Maribor hosted the first Ladies’ Alpine Ski World Cup. That was also the year the first Golden Fox was born on the “stara Fiska” slope. This trophy has been deeply anchored in the Slovenian sports consciousness as a synonym for first-class ladies’ alpine skiing, which has also left an indelible mark in world skiing. Over and over again, Maribor witnessed the creation of history in Slovenian Alpine skiing. The great victories of Mateja Svet, Urška Hrovat and Tina Maze will and can never be forgotten. Thanks to its excellent organisation, but even more so to the remarkable atmosphere created by several thousand fans at the foot of Pohorje every

Zlata lisica VITRANC TROPHY 55 years of the Vitranc World Cup Some people are born important. Others become important when they create something unique, something no one else has achieved before them. The Vitranc Cup belongs to that second group! The spirit of sport constantly leads to new achievements. You need this ambition to be faster, better and to head towards new goals while you still have an opportunity. When you are overtaken, it is too late – from then on, it is all about survival. Out on Ski resorts in Slovenia

the slopes, everything lies below you. The entire valley seems to be in the palm of your hand. The best skiers in the world will try to find the fastest route to descend to the valley. In fact, they will free-fall down to the valley. Everything is icy; everything is ready for the race. On this type of ice and on a slope as steep as this, a new skiing technique can only be performed by the best skiers. After the slope is the “plain,” as it is referred to by reporters during

year, the Maribor Ladies’ Alpine Ski World Cup is firmly anchored at the top of world sports events. But the Golden Fox is more than just a sports event. It is also one of the biggest social events in the city along the Drava River, which turns into the top ski city in Slovenia every time it is taken over by the best world Alpine female skiers. Vitranc Cup broadcasts, it is followed by the last free-fall to the finish line. This is the Vitranc Trophy. During Vitranc Trophy week, the valley and surrounding peaks put on festive colours. This year, we are celebrating 55 years of the Vitranc Trophy. The pace of modern life is monstrous, leaving us almost no time to socialise, spend time with our friends, etc. We will do our best as long as we maintain ties that bring together only the best: Adelboden, Alta Badia, Åre, Cortina d Ampezzo, Garmisch Partenkirchen, Kitzbühel, Kvitfjell, Lake Louise, Maribor, Schladming, Val d’Isere, Val Gardena, Wengen and Kranjska Gora are the members of the association of traditional organizers of Alpine skiing competitions for the World Cup – Club 5. Planica – the skiflying spectacle According to tradition, Planica hosts the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup finals. The best and most daring ski jumpers compete in two individual and one team competition on the renovated flying hill of the Gorišek brothers, where we witnessed 50 flights with distances over 220 metres in 2015, with an average flight distance of 209.5 metres. The breath-taking flights and the loudest fans are a guarantee for the famous superb atmosphere in the valley beneath the Ponce mountains, as it is visited by tens of thousands of people every year. Fierce fighting for the Great Crystal Globe, the rich side programme, the unique tradition of the venue and thrilled exclamations of visitors from around the world promise another spectacle in Planica. GOLTE, TELEMARK WORLD CUP Alpine racing, ski jumping and cross-country skiing. This is telemark. The Telemark World Cup is the youngest among the great competitions in Slovenia. Since 2015, Golte has been the venue of telemark skiers coming from 15 countries. The discipline with which competitors must master telemark skiing, ski jumping and the skating technique of cross-country skiing is very attractive for spectators. The competition is held on the Medvedjek ski slope with a magnificent view of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Telemark skiing is gaining recognition in Slovenia and our competitors,

who wish to hear loud support from their fans, are successful in the World Cup. The event can be watched from the Golte Hotel terrace or through live online broadcast. Telemark Golte Organising Committee Radegunda 19c, 3330 Mozirje T: +386 (0)3 839 11 00 E: info@golte.si I: www.golte.si/telemark

Since 1991, when the first Biathlon World Cup competition was held there, competitors from all over the world have been gathering in the midst of snow-covered forests on the vast Pokljuka plateau. In 2009, Pokljuka was brought to life again with the newlyconstructed biathlon centre and the central facility – the Center Hotel, which provides competitors and professional staff with direct access to the site. SKI SCHOOL ASSOCIATION OF SLOVENIA The Ski School Association of Slovenia is one of the commissions of the Ski Instructors and Trainers Association of Slovenia (SITAS) operating within the Ski Association of Slovenia. Members of the Ski School Association of Slovenia include 15 active ski schools operating in nine Slovenian and two foreign ski resorts. In order to become members of the Association, these schools must comply with all professional, staff and organisational requirements regulated by the official Rules of the Ski School Association of Slovenia. Members of the Ski Association of Slovenia carry out their activities in accordance with the programme approved by the Council of Experts of the Ski Instructors and Trainers Association of Slovenia. Only ski instructors with a valid licence for the current season are allowed to carry out professional work in these schools. These professionals are mostly former competitors or graduates of the Faculty of Sports. In the 2014/2015 season, the total of 310 ski instructors working for members of the Ski School Association of Slovenia carried out approximately 150,000 pedagogical hours on the snow. They handled more than 52,000 course participants. This is another reason to visit ski schools that are members of the Ski School Association of Slovenia. I: www.sloski.si www.zuts.si

At 1,517 metres above sea level, there is a whole different world. In summer, the healthy mountain forest climate never exceeds a pleasant 24 degrees Celsius. In winter, grassy plains and forests of mighty Pohorje spruce rest under a thick, fluffy carpet of snow.

ROGLA For winter experiences In summer, the curious explore the Pohorje natural pearl, the Lovrenška jezera lakes, and deep Pohorje forests with giant anthills, carnivorous plants and shy deer hiding among the ferns. When the first snow falls, the fairy tale turns to adventures on a white, crunching blanket – on skis, on a board, in snowshoes, on the adrenaline sledding run or in winter hiking boots. Rogla is known as a diverse family ski resort with a renowned ski school, a children’s snow park, night skiing and a mischievous but educational entertainment for little skiers. Its ski slopes also offer a pleasurable experience to more experienced skiers, even European cup and FIS World Cup competitors, in the sun or under the stars. Snowboarders and freestyle skiers can knock themselves out in the multiple-award-winning Rogla Fun park, while a paradise among snow covered

After our snow adventures, we can submerge into the world of wellness – at the “most popular hotel” in the 2014/2015 season according to the Skiarea Test, the Natura**** Hotel, which is also well-known for its delicious and healthy cuisine from the “wild garden.” We can also take a ski bus to the valley where we can enjoy warm thermal springs and the Sauna Village in the Terme Zreče spa resort. What about dinner? Pohorje chefs have no match.

Kanin is the only Slovenian ski resort above 2,000 metres of altitude. The ski season on Kanin lasts from December to the May Day holidays. The ski resort is distinguished by its sunny position and dry snow. A magnificent view from the ski resort extends from the heart of the Alps to the Bay of Trieste.

KANIN – SELLA NEVEA The skiing of two countries The Kanin – Sella Nevea ski resort is the first international ski centre in the region. By connecting the infrastructure on the Prevala pass, ski resorts on the Slovenian and Italian sides became an international ski centre in the 2009/2010 season. On the ski slopes, which reach well over 2,000 metres above sea level, skiing is possible as late as until the May Day holidays. In the spring months, the sunny position, dry snow and magnificent views allow skiing to be combined with activities in the Soča river valley: adrenaline water experiences, cycling, hiking, golf and many other outdoor programmes.

24

Kanin is a true high-mountain ski resort, as the ski runs at this altitude never freeze up, but rather, for the most part of the winter, offer quality skiing on exclusively natural snow. Kanin is located at the extreme south-eastern part of the Alpine mountain range, where it comes nearest to the Adriatic Sea. A special feature of the Kanin ski resort is its sunny position, which offers a unique view into the heart of the Alps on the east and the sea in the Bay of Trieste to the south.

Alpine centre. The surrounding mountains, with peaks exceeding 2,000 metres, give it a dynamic and dramatic appeal, while the valley that opens up towards the sea gives it a special charm and diversity, which can seldom be found anywhere else in the world. In the Bovec basin, the proximity to the Adriatic Sea is reflected in very mild winters, while Kanin, on the other hand, receives abundant snow – it is not unusual for the snow cover to exceed 10 metres high.

Ski resorts in Slovenia

In summer, ski resorts become an ideal hiking and cycling destination.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES

34

In ski centres, summertime is ideal for hiking and cycling. The centres maintain circular and more or less demanding hiking trails. Most centres are crossed by well-known long-distance trails, such as the oldest long-distance trail in Slovenia – the Slovenian Mountain Trail, the Via Alpina and the E6.

Some centres have modern bike parks suitable for average as well as experienced downhill cyclists. Cross country trails, fun trails and single trails enable cycling at the elevation of centres as well as downhill descents to the valleys. In these centres, cableway infrastructure runs throughout most of the year. Rental of bicycles and protective equipment is available at ski centres. Licensed guides ensure safe hiking or cycling.

Most centres maintain paragliding launch sites that enable launching of individuals and tandems. During summer months, many centres use water reservoirs intended for making artificial snow during the winter, for water activities and games. Numerous cycling, hiking and other events in the centres supplement their summer activities, which provide a lively atmosphere and organised entertainment.
