Its most famous attraction is Lake Bohinj, nestled like a jewel in a crown of mountains. More than 2/3 of Bohinj is located within Triglav national park. A bicycle is the perfect tool to explore the dirt roads that wind through the area’s trees and meadows, where you will avoid the flow of traffic, and through the narrow village roads, where you will not be in anyone’s way. You can opt for a bit of “Sunday cycling” along the 11 km bike path from Bohinjska Bistrica, past the lake, and on to Srednja vas, or you can choose a rush of adrenaline on the steeper mountain biking trails. Only the most hardened road cyclists will run out of asphalt! Bohinj is simply too gorgeous to ride past.

What makes some regions better for mountain biking than others? You’ll find the answer at Geopark Karavanke, where the striking geological formations and diverse landscape combine to make a biking wonderland. Mountain bikes are made for enjoying the mountains, but in Koroška you can also bike through a unique, 6 km long maintained bike route deep within the earth. Equipped with headlamps, you will be guided through the mountain, along abandoned mine levels and galleries, and along the way you will discover the mysteries of the Peca underworld. The lower sections of the pit are flooded, and if you want another novel adventure you can explore the little underground lake by kayak.

Treat yourself to a cycling adventure through the Soča valley! Mountain bikers can sweat and sunbathe on the steep slopes of the Julian Alps high above Bovec, Kobarid, and Tolmin, enjoy the views from Kolovrat, and explore the lovely Šentvid plateau, the remote villages above Baška grapa, or the picturesque borderland area of Slavia Friulana. Road cyclists should not miss the climb over Vršič (1,611 m), the highest road pass in Slovenia, while an even bigger challenge might be the climb up the highest road in Slovenia, which leads to the Mangart saddle (2,040 m). If you’d rather an easier time on the pedals, try the routes along the Soča, Koritnica, Nadiža, Tolminka, Idrijca, and Bača river valleys. After enjoying the valley’s pristine nature, take a moment to relax in one of the many restaurants or agritourism farms with a wide range of traditional food to offer.

The charm of Slovenia is hidden in the simple fact that four major European natural geographical units meet here in this amazingly small territory: the Alps, the Dinaric Mountains, the Pannonian Plain, and the Mediterranean. All this diversity in height and depth, meanders and plains, is reflected in the astonishing variety of the climate, the waters, the vegetation, and the cultural landscape. Throughout time, history rolled across this important crossroads of nature and civilization and left indelible traces in unique local customs as well as on architecture and the character of the people. We say there are two million Slovenes and that we speak the Slovene language. However, the natural and historical diversity also created a cultural and linguistic diversity that forced Slovenes in the past and still today to learn foreign languages, and therefore you will find easy to communicate with the local people in English, German, or Italian. To make your cycling holidays as varied and colourful as possible, the Slovenian Tourist Board (STB) is endeavouring to harmonise and expand the range of specialised cycling products and services. To this end, the STB has introduced the “cycling destination” category and developed standards for cycling hotels, hostels, campsites and tourist farms. Apart from putting the right infrastructure in place, the main guiding principle followed is to provide relevant information to all types of cyclists, to make sure cycling routes and trails are well kept and marked, and to establish a broad network of guides. Alongside the traditional star system, cyclist-friendly providers of accommodation and food (hotels, hostels, pensions, apartments and others) can acquire bicycle symbols indicating the extent and quality of what they offer to cyclists. Basic services are indicated with one bicycle, and then range up to five bicycles, a designation reserved for tourism providers who live with cyclists and for whom it represents their main activity. Below we present the requirements for acquiring one or more bicycle signs, with each higher ranking offering more than the previous one.
