Chuck and Jan Rosenak were attorneys for the government by occupation. They were also two of the earliest pioneers in the field of Self-Taught Art. They loved the idea that you could travel around and meet the artists who created these works - and travel they did. They penned four of the most influential and important source books on the subject and along the way inspired all of us to appreciate and covet this unique art form. Chuck and Jan were some of the first people to take a chance on a fledgling auction house, Slotin Auction, paving the way for more than 30 years in the business. Jan passed away in 2012, but Chuck continued making his mark in the field. It is with a heavy heart, and one filled with immense gratitude, that we wish our mentor and friend, Chuck, continued good travels. We’ll miss you.

John Frederick Turner (1947-2026) John Turner was an Emmy winning news editor and arts producer at KGO Channel 7 in San Francisco, for 32 years. He was fascinated with popular culture, outsider art and environments. He traveled extensively and works from his vast art collection have been displayed in over sixty venues, including the Smithsonian, the AVAM. He was the curator of the Museum of Craft and Folk Art in SF, and guest curated exhibits at the American Folk Art Museum in NYC and the Smithsonian. John was also a talented filmmaker, author, and artist. He was dearly loved by his family and many friends for his passion for adventures and his willingness to share his knowledge of folk art. 7. Title to Lot and risk of loss or damage to the Lot passes to the Buyer when the Hammer falls. Slotin Auction shall have no liability for any damage to property left on its premises after the date of sale. Buyers with outstanding balance after 14 days of the close of the auction will be charged a ten percent (10%) late fee on the Sales Price. Ship: $200 Provenance: Info from consignor: “This is what I know about the painting. It was a gift to my mother from the artist himself around 40 years ago. My mother was Mario’s wife’s cousin. The painting is a depiction of the neighborhood that they lived in when living in Ybor City. The house on the far left shows my grandfather in the baseball uniform that he wore when playing semi-pro ball here in Tampa. My mother and her sister are pictured beside him. To the left of my grandfather is my grandmother with my mother’s two brothers. The painting is titled “How You Do”. The black gentleman with peg-leg, in the plaid suit tipping his hat is who the painting is named for. The “Taffy Man”, pictured in white and the “Devil Crab Man” are vendors that visited our neighborhood every day. The man with the orange cart selling mullet has a sign on his cart saying, “No Credit In All Languages”. The devil crab man is looking back at the Cuban woman in the striped dress with the big butt. To the far right is a lady with her triplets in the carriage has her older twin sons walking ahead of her. The artwork also depicts children playing ball in the red brick street between the trolley tracks. For 40 years this painting has been hanging in my mother’s home with an occasional dusting but nothing else has been done affecting the originality of the artwork.”

146. Apache Puberty Dress Sunrise Ceremony Dress. c. 1920's-40's. Brain-tanned leather with trade beads and tin horns, painted pigment and other mixed media. Overall excellent as-found condition. 26" x 54" long. The dress was made for a four-day ceremony for a girl coming into womanhood. It shows ceremonial use from remnants of corn meal, pollen, sweat from use and decades of being stored. This dress was used more than once, probably by a sister or cousin. He sent me this skull several months later only he didn’t let it dry completely before putting it in a box wrapped in cotton. Anyway it was a little misshaped when it finally dried out. Then a carpenter working at my house accidentally broke it! I didn’t want to throw it out because it was the best skull I’d seen him make. Fortunately my neighbor and good friend, Libby Hatmaker, was a gifted conservator and she put it back together. Since his work is all unified clay, basically dried mud, it tends to be very fragile but this is now reinforced with epoxy and likely stronger than any of his surviving pieces.” Page 44
