Untitled, c. 2000 - 2005, metal with punched nail hole design of spiritual nature. Errol Lloyd “Powah” Atherton lived in Albany, St Mary. He participated in Kumina-influenced Bongo meetings and had a deep sense of the power of the ancestors. He was also the son of intuitive artist, Vincent Atherton, creating, in Randall Morris’ words, “one of the most powerful yard shows in Jamaica with offertory seals honoring the carvings of his father, Vincent.” In addition to carving, he also painted words on wood and zinc to invoke the ancestors. Powah’s work has been exhibited locally since around 2000, when it was featured in the exhibition Prophets and Messengers, held at the Mutual Gallery in Kingston, Jamaica. His work was also featured in 2008 as a part of the National Biennial, held at the National Gallery of Jamaica. He is represented in a number of private and public collections—local and overseas— including the collection of the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum in Miami. (Cavin-Morris Gallery, NYC).

Antisemitic propaganda poster produced in German-occupied Serbia in 1941 for the Grand Anti-Masonic Exhibition held in Belgrade. The poster was part of a major exhibition that ran from October 22, 1941, to January 19, 1942, the purpose of which was to promote an alleged "Jewish-Communist-Freemason conspiracy" for world domination.
The poster features a grotesque caricature of a large Jewish man, portrayed in traditional Eastern European attire, pulling six upper-class, seemingly non-Jewish men by a rope around their necks. The imagery suggests that the Jews maintain a stranglehold on national resources through financial manipulation and control over various aspects of society like capitalism, communism, and democracy.
Text: The text at the top in Cyrillic Serbian reads "Ви још не знате..." which translates to "You still don't know..." or "You are not aware". The text at the bottom reads "Будите на опрези!", meaning "Be on the lookout!" or "Stand guard!".
This poster is an example of the extensive propaganda campaigns used by the Nazis and their collaborators to fuel hatred and justify the persecution and murder of Jews during the Holocaust.

German Propaganda Poster in Russian. After Operation Barbarossa was launched on June 22, 1941, the Germans tried to convince elements of the Soviet Armed Forces to turn on their own superiors, and to that end, the Wehrmacht deployed a range of propaganda pamphlets, posters and broadcasts.
This leaflet calls for Red Army troops to recognize their own oppression and come over to the German side. It reads: "Red army soldier! Are you setting out to free other peoples? First free yourself from your oppressors!" The Red Army soldier is chained to the NKVD (Soviet secret police), then to Stalin, and in turn, to a Jew. This "chain" represented a common trope of German propaganda: the alleged Jewish conspiracy to enslave the world under Bolshevism.

The image is a WWII-era Nazi propaganda poster in Ukrainian, titled "Вони отруюють Наше життя!" which translates to "They poison our lives!".The poster is a direct translation and adaptation of the infamous German anti-Semitic children's book Der Giftpilz (The Poisonous Mushroom).
The poster depicts caricatures of figures with stereotypical anti-Semitic features as poisonous red-and-white mushrooms (fly agaric), which was a common Nazi analogy. The message implies that Jewish people, represented by these figures, are dangerous and corrupting influences on society, similar to how a poisonous mushroom is hard to distinguish from an edible one. A Star of David is visible hanging from the neck of the central figure.
Origin: The imagery was originally created by Philipp "Fips" Rupprecht for the book Der Giftpilz, published in 1938 by Julius Streicher's publishing house, Der Stürmer-Verlag, a major source of Nazi propaganda.
Purpose: This specific poster was produced by German authorities for distribution in occupied Ukrainian territories during World War II as a form of anti-Semitic propaganda, intended to spread hatred and justify anti-Jewish policies and actions

It reflects the intense political instability and fear of a Communist revolution (like the one that happened in Russia) prevalent at the time. The use of stark imagery and the explicit warning against voting "red" was a common tactic in the heated political climate.

526. Wilber ‘Corkey’ Christman.
This is a set of 18 double robes (an inner robe and an outer robe for all), inspired by the motif of The Last Supper. Excellent condition. Est. $100-10,000. Buyer is responsible for shipping.
Concerning the Robes:
The Last Supper fascination had its beginning in 1984 as a family folly. It soon became an obsession to collect as many different articles of all kind that somehow or other related to the painting. The collection quickly grew into hundreds of objects featuring an amazing variety of artists, styles, and mediums, all centered on this one subject. By 2000, the collection had become so massive (well over twelve hundred articles).
Since the very beginning, Corkey had been hand crafting items for the collection and had amassed a variety of neck ties with the plan to make a Last Supper quilt—a long term project to slow the number of acquisitions but keep the theme alive. These ties became the first robe. At a costume party, Corkey saw an authentic Arabian Jalabiyeh and knew at once that he needed to make one.
So began the slow process of cutting, sewing and embroidering.
Six months later, when the robe was completed, he knew that there had to be twelve more. Each garment displays either a depiction of a Last Supper or symbolism related to the event. There is no relevance to what would have been worn at that time and nearly no concern for the individual persons. Each robe is sewn completely by hand, and usually built from whatever fabric or trim was at hand or had been given to him. Each outer robe needed an under garment, and soon he was constructing hats to complete each outfit. He begin each robe with just a vague idea or whim and then the robe progresses in its own way.
This is a set of 18 double robes (an inner robe and an outer robe for all) inspired by the motif of The Last Supper. All were completely hand-stitched by a professional harpist in upstate New York, Corkey Christman. Mr. Christman had attended Bob Jones University as an art major before focusing his studies on the harp at The Curtis Institute in Philadelphia.
In his later years, Mr. Christman began obsessively collecting representations of The Last Supper. When he’d acquired well over one thousand pieces, he began creating his own. His final burst of activity was the sewing of these robes. With his art history background, he created fanciful connections: the “Peter” robe is covered with roosters. Because The Last Supper was a Passover meal, there is a “Bitter Herbs” robe. And while inspired by The Last Supper, not all are directly connected: there is a “Pope” robe, and there are robes for The Three Wise Men, because per Mr. Christman’s logic, “They would have come back for the party, wouldn’t they?”

This traditional Arabian robe, a jalabiyeh, was created from necktie fabric, with a design froma Sunday school poster of the Last Supper.
The back shows the disciples seated around the table. Their hands and faces are embroidered appliques, and the robes and backgrounds are from the front and reverse side of the tie material. The symbols included on the front are the menorah, a goblet, and bread. Pieces from the Elton John line of ties have also been used.
The under robe is of a russet color striped fabric, wrong side out, with a yoke made of the same fabric, right side out.
The hat is constructed of thirteen panels shown in a circle. A single necktie dangles over the shoulder.

This robe has an under and over-robe, a plaid, two hats and two accessories. The under robe is made from gray denim with purple cording. The robe is covered in large multi-colored embroidered panels of scenes from a Last Supper paintings not by Da Vinci. Each panel is stitched with variegated thread of one color only.

The over robe is sewn from a cotton fabric in a large colored square pattern.Plaid: To be worn as a shawl. It is decorated with embroidered panels of details from the painting. Colored cloth strips repeating the colors of the second hat serve as fringe.Accessories: A fringed pillow with a paint-by-number on one side and a crewel stitch on the other of the Last Supper painting. This is included so that the Last Supper can be viewed as a whole.Tote bag: Made from the gray denim cloth of the under-robe. It is covered with embroidered panels and finished with purple cording.
Hat one: a Thagiya, cap of white cotton. Embroidered panels around the sides spell out "Last Supper."
Hat two: Gray Scottish battle hat with thirteen multicolored circles.

This robe has an under and over-robe with two hats. The under robe is made from a light-weight gabardine in a cream base shot with tan.. It is in the style of a priest's cassock complete with back pleats. It is decorated with counted cross stitch squares designed as children's alphabet blocks. White Owl Brand Erotic Kinetic Cigar Box Diorama. c. 1930-40.
Rare wind up erotic toy with decoupage double entendre sayings, plastic doll with mechanical penis and other mixed media. Humorous writings and attachments.
Closed box is 8.5" x 6" x 2.5".
Provenance: Illustrated in Milton Simpson's Folk Erotica from the Collection of Charles G. Haak, pg. 79.
This piece was discovered hidden inside a secret hole in an elderly man's mattress including a cigar box, a phallic entendre in itself - its humor hinges on the artist's clever recycling of pop-cultural detritus. To the right, a nude figure lies on a bed, a mechanical penis engages her in frantic, albeit robotic, intercourse.

Turtel Onli, a graphic artist known for his self-published comics and for founding the “Black Age of Comics” movement, died on January 15. He was 72.
Onli was born Alvin Phillips on January 25, 1952. Raised by his grandparents in Hyde Park, Onli’s love of art ran deep. His grandfather, a reverend, would paint depictions of biblical stories to use as teaching charts in his sermons. Seeing his grandfather’s work had Onli “hooked” and inspired him to create “narrative art using (his) style,” he told the Indie Comix Dispatch.
As a child, Onli would draw and write for his peers, sometimes for a fee of candy or comic books. In interviews, he described frequent bus trips to visit the Art Institute of Chicago and dreams of attending the School of the Art Institute (SAIC).
After graduating high school in 1970, Onli founded the Black Artist’s Guild, which published zines by its members and planned touring art exhibitions. After receiving his associate degree from Olive-Harvey College, Onli enrolled at SAIC to study art therapy. While a student, he worked as a freelance illustrator for Playboy magazine, Johnson Publishing and as a courtroom illustrator for WGN-TV. Onli also designed album covers for R&B and rap artists, such as George Clinton and Kurtis Blow. He told the Tribune that he was even commissioned by the Rolling Stones to create an album cover for their 1978 album “Some Girls.”
“They wanted something absolutely offensive. I gave it to them. Lawyers stepped in, wisely, to say ‘You can’t show that,’” he told the Tribune. The cover design was promptly passed off to graphic designer Peter Corriston.
In an interview with SAIC News about his 2024 exhibition, “Turtel Onli: The Black Age of Comics,”which was on display at the Logan Center last spring, Onli said he had long wanted to create comics, but encountered some resistance. In 1981, he met with the vice president of a big-name comic book company in New York City, who dismissively asked him, “do Black people read?”
And so, Onli began to chart his own path outside of mainstream comic publishing. He began self-publishing his own comics and reaching out to other Black artists to publish limited runs of their work under the Onli Studios imprint. His “way of responding to a problem or an opposition,” he told the South Side Weekly in 2015, “is not to get mad but to get busy.”
Onli’s style, which he called “Rhythmism,” combined classic superhero imagery with Afrofuturist and primitivist influences. He told SAIC News that his comics aimed to push back against stereotypes of Black creators and characters.
Some of his most popular characters include NOG: Protector of the Pyramids and Malcolm-10. Created in 1979, NOG, short for Nubian of Greatness, is a superhero inspired by African history who fights injustice from outer space to defend a Black planet. In 1992 he released Malcolm-10, a superhero who is the singular clone of 10 Black American leaders and legends – among them Malcolm X, Jesse Owens, Harriet Tubman and John Henry – who fights drug abuse, gang wars and racism on earth with telepathic powers.
In 1993, Onli and a few other Black comic book artists declared the era the “Black Age of Comics.” A graphic novel movement outside of the mainstream comic book industry, Onli defined the age as “a genre of graphic novels that feature creators and products derived from the Black, urbane, indie, African or cosmic experience.”
Onli co-created the inaugural Black Age of Comics convention that year to highlight Black artists in the comic industry. Held at the South Side Community Art Center, the convention drew more than 1,000 creators and comic fans. The convention carried on for decades and expanded to other cities, among them Philadelphia and Detroit.
Onli told SAIC News that he appreciated the way the movement has spread beyond him, and how, as a genre, people should be able to embrace it and put their own spin on it.
“You can’t trademark jazz or grunge or hip-hop, so you can’t trademark the Black Age,” he said.
But, as he told the Tribune in 2024, he often felt overlooked. A few years prior, he was a part of an exhibition of Chicago comic artists at the Museum of Contemporary Art, where his character NOG was featured heavily.
“But do you know, I did not receive a single professional call from anyone who saw that show? Not galleries, publishers — nobody. Plus, people mentioned me in articles (about the show) like I was dead and gone! ‘Oh, so unfortunate about Turtel, how he is always being overlooked…,’” Onli told the Tribune. “I hope you say in this article that I am still publishing, that I am still here and I am still an advocate for Black artists in comics.”
Undeterred, Onli was an active artist until the end of his life. He ran Onli Studios out of the Bridgeport Art Center and worked as an adjunct art professor at Harold Washington College, teaching art appreciation. Decades after he set out to change the industry, his doggedness remained everpresent.
“If I’m gonna take on a fight, let me take on a fight to grow fresh instead of rehabbing stale,” he told the Weekly in 2015. “I know what you’re doing. But more importantly, I know what I’m doing. And it’s changes like this that I let flow through me, and I keep pushing that ball uphill. Because people don’t like a pioneer. If we have any tradition in this country, it’s called growth and change. We’ve come a long way. When we can’t say that, we miss everything. We miss everything. But there it goes.”

910. Theodore Santoro. Carved Angels. Carved and painted wood. Excellent condition. Tallest is 9" h. Est. $50-75. Ship: $45
Two (2) carvings: a painted carved Madonna with pencil details, and a wooded angel. Santoro was born on July 1, 1912, in Cleveland, Ohio, of Neapolitan parents. His family moved by car in 1939 to Oakland, “where Santoro was employed as a machinist at the Nabisco company” (Jehu’s biography). There are plenty of Santoros listed on census reports and voter registration records both in Oakland and Chardon, Ohio (on the outskirts of Cleveland). According to these sources, Theodore Santoro lived at 1736 24th Avenue in Oakland for some time.
When Santoro was 44, “deteriorating mental health forced early retirement,” and he lived in relative isolation for the following eight years. After his death, many (all?) of his sculptures were bought and his work was part of at least five group exhibitions. Other than one piece owned by the Oakland Museum of California, it’s not clear what has happened to Santoro’s creations; some were sold to private collectors.
