Changes...

Doing your part for the planet doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task. Even a few small food changes, like choosing the occasional plant-based protein instead of meat or shopping for staples in bulk, may start you on a path toward significant environmental impact. Minimal changes to the way you shop, cook, and consume food will help. It doesn’t have to be that difficult. You may even find that environmentally friendly choices save money. Getting fresh produce from the Farmers Market or your very own home garden is another good option. Composting is great, especially for a summer garden. Try several dietary tweaks for a pro-planet, pro-budget lifestyle and see if they inspire you to broaden your eco effort. Every little bit helps. With a few small changes, you can cut your food waste dramatically, save money, and help take some pressure off Mother Nature too!

Packing to Move

Downsize: Most of us have twice as much room as we need. And that means that we have twice as much space to heat and cool. Not to mention all of the “junk” we collect to fill that extra space. Consider simplifying your life, and downsizing your living space.

You’ll find that it is not that difficult to start using your space more efficiently.

Use old newspaper for packing: You can recycle it when you get to your new home. Most every town recycles newspaper, while not all recycle packing materials such as Styrofoam “peanuts.” Newspaper is also great for cleaning the windows in your new home! Don’t purchase moving boxes: Use recycled cardboard boxes.

They are far less expensive (FREE), just as good as new boxes, and help reduce the impact your move will have on the environment. Your local grocery and liquor stores are great places to get moving boxes. Try to get boxes 8

of uniform shape and size, to make it easier to efficiently load your moving vehicle. And when you are finished moving, recycle your cardboard boxes.

Most every town recycles cardboard boxes. For items you are planning on storing, consider moving them in plastic tubs. You can reuse these tubs for years to come, or donate them to needy charities. There are groups who will rent you plastic moving tubs. Use old blankets to protect furniture: Then donate them to a homeless shelter in your new home town. Recycle hazardous materials locally: Don’t throw corrosive or flammable materials away, and certainly don’t dispose of them in your sewage. Contact your local municipality for proper disposal procedures. Don’t move your food: Plan ahead and eat the food in your house. Donate excess to a local charity. Don’t pay to ship that can of soup across the country.

Asparagus Recipe: 1-2 lb fresh asparagus /balsamic vinegar /olive oil / sea salt /fresh ground black pepper to taste. Rinse and snap off the tough ends of the asparagus. Place asparagus spears on a platter and drizzle with balsamic vinegar and olive oil (a couple of tbsp of each or more, depending on the amount of asparagus). Sprinkle with salt and pepper and roll the asparagus around in it until well coated. Heat grill to high and grill for a few minutes on each side or until asparagus is done.

Quantum Bio-feedback is a special type of bio-feedback that relies on the principles of quantum physics.

These principles suggest, among other things, that matter and energy are just 2 different forms of the same thing. Thus, compared to conventional bio-feedback, in which a person is trained to become aware of a normal bodily function, such as heart rhythm or brain waves or blood pressure, so that they can learn to control these functions consciously, quantum biofeedback contains these sorts of therapies also, but so much more. Using quantum biofeedback, the electro-magnetic level of functioning (which is the level where all change starts) can be monitored and treated electromagnetically.

When summer temperatures start climbing, our palates start yearning for cooling and refreshing foods. That’s the time you can count on the versatile cucumber!

Most of us probably met cucumbers via pickles, but they also shine in many other recipes, in part because there are so many varieties. For example, pickling cucumbers have a fairly tough skin, so you’re better off choosing something like an English or lemon type for straight up eating. Cucumbers offer a pleasing crunch to salads, slaws, and sandwiches.

Another cool way to use cukes is in a yoghurt-based dish known as tzatziki in the Mediterranean world or raita in India. Just peel and thinly slice cucumber, drain it well (pro tip: toss with a little salt to draw the moisture out), and add it to Greek yoghurt with some dill and minced garlic to taste. Other recipes call for adding mint, olive oil, and/or other herbs. You can adjust it as you like, and as to what you serving, be it grilled chicken or just as a dip with crackers and veggies. There are several health benefits to cucumbers, especially since they’re a good source of antioxidants. Studies have also indicated that they may aid in hydration, weight loss, and lowering blood sugar. However, cucumbers aren’t for everyone. Some people can’t tolerate the cucurbitacin, an ingredient that can cause indigestion issues. Cucumbers are also fairly high in Vitamin K, which affects blood clotting, so anyone taking a blood thinner should be aware. As tasty as cucumbers are to eat, don’t forget about them for beverages either! Add some cucumber and lemon slices to ice water, or take your cocktail game to the next level with some cucumber-infused vodka or gin. Cheers to the cukes!

The fashion resale industry is causing a monumental shift in consumer habits. As more people use clothing apps to buy and sell pre-loved fashion, secondhand clothing is getting a fresh start. The fashion resale industry is estimated to grow to $77 billion by 2025. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 11.3 million tons of textile waste were thrown into landfills

by Americans in 2018. Despite the environmental harm and labor issues that have resulted from the fast fashion and faux fur industries growth, there are many ways to reduce the impact. Here’s a few ideas: 1) Reduce clothing waste by refraining from buying into micro-trends. By shopping for the weather seasons

rather than following small month-long trends, the amount of cheap clothing thrown away will certainly decrease.

2) Re-purpose old clothing; by turning a torn shirt into a Pinterest DIY or rag for cleaning, an item can have a second life. 3) Buy from second-hand thrift stores to help keep clothes out of landfills. 4) Donating clothing or shoes that are still in good condition can help others in finding quality items for an affordable price. Also, while you're donating, look for great buys for yourself at resale stores!

Blueberries a super food!

Blueberries are rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and potassium. They’re also great for your heart and act as a natural anti-inflammatory. Why not add them to cereal, yogurt, or your favorite dessert?

Your body will love you for it! Harvard researchers have found that blueberries (and strawberries) help lower the risk of a heart attack by 32%. Dark fruits like blueberries and blackberries are loaded with antioxidants with fight free radicals, which can cause damage wherever they go, including in the brain.

Your body doesn't create antioxidants,

so you have to eat foods that have them. Snack on fresh berries, use frozen ones in smoothies, or cook them down in a pot with a little water and a squeeze of lemon juice to make a compote perfect for spooning on top of yogurt.

Recipe: Easy Blueberry Smoothie.

Blend 2 cups frozen blueberries and 1 cup almond milk. Enjoy!

Spinach Quiche Recipe: 2 tbsp olive oil / ½ onion, finely chopped / 1 clove garlic, minced / 1 10-oz package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed / 1½ cups grated Gruyère (or dairy free) / 1 9-inch unbaked pie shell / 3 large eggs, lightly beaten (or egg substitute) / 1½ cups milk (or dairy free) / 12-15 cherry tomatoes, halfed / sea salt and pepper to taste. Preheat oven to 375ºF. Heat olive oil in a small skillet on medium. Add onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute longer, stirring. Transfer to a small bowl and let cool. Sprinkle onion mixture, spinach and Gruyère over bottom of pie shell. Beat eggs and milk together, season with salt and pepper. Gently pour into crust. Top with tomatoes.

Bake quiche for 40 to 45 minutes, until set and nicely browned. Remove from oven and let rest for 10 minutes.

Minimalist...

The pandemic may have changed the way we see the world. It has made us more aware of habits that before were barely noticed. We've had a chance to see "life" up close and personal and, the picture wasn't very pretty. We've had more time to observe habits that now seem wasteful. The newest word, "minimalist" has also emerged. Eco-minimalism simply comes down to consuming less. Can switching from dairy to nut milk change the world? Maybe not, but even opting for plant-based milk rather than dairy milk or replacing several meals a week with meat-free alternatives, can have a substantial climate impact. Learn to cook, even if it’s just simple things. Cooking for yourself comes with lots of benefits, including reducing expenses, establishing healthier habits, and of course, helping the planet.

Making sustainable choices is empowering in a world where it can feel like we don’t have much control. Lots of people however making small changes together can have a large impact. Now, that's a comforting thought!

With all the mounting evidence that friends can help keep you healthy, perhaps the new prescription may be, “Make two friends and call us in the morning!”

There are tons of cats looking for a home. The Humane Society says that 6–8 million dogs and cats end up in shelters every year, and 2.7 million of them are killed. Instead of buying, adopt and give them a second chance. Since cats kill 1.3 to 4 billion birds a year, we’ve lost nearly 30% of birds in the U.S., according to The New York Times. Keep your cat indoors. The National Resource Defense Council suggests putting a bell on feral cats’ collars to alert birds and other living creatures to their presence. It's a lot safer indoors too. Our feline friends can be unpredictable.

Sometimes they don’t like the expensive toys and tend to prefer something like a string or even tissue paper. Re-purposing what you already have will not only help save money, but it can be more fun and creative.

Choosing the right cat litter is necessary for your kitty. The most popular type is usually “clay-based” litter, which is both cheap and easy to find. However, they generate dust that can trigger asthma attacks in both humans and cats. Look for a biodegradable litter made from paper, corn, walnuts, wheat, wood, pine, grass, or a mix of these and other materials. When it comes to cat food, organic ingredients alone do not make it environmentally friendly. It depends on things such as ethical production process, and packaging to name a few. There are estimates that suggest that one-quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions, phosphate and pesticide used in meat production comes from pet food. Check out the company you are buying from.

Hair Care in the pantry?

With so many hair care products on the market today, no wonder it is easy to be confused. A number of inexpensive and time tested hair care aids can be found right in your kitchen pantry. Here are a few to get you started: 1) Cornstarch: For a fast, dry shampoo, spread cornstarch into your hair; leave it on for 5 minutes, then brush it out.

2) Lemon Juice: Use as a rinse after shampooing to lighten and brighten blond hair. Squeeze the juice of one lemon into a cup of water and work into hair. Rinse with water. 3) Vinegar: To make brunette hair shine, mix 1 tablespoon of vinegar in a cup of water; apply and rinse with water.

4) Mayonnaise: To condition hair so that it's smooth and shiny, coat hair with mayonnaise, pin it up, and wrap in plastic wrap. Leave on for 30 minutes, then shampoo.

However, you might not know what steps you have to take to make it more energy efficient and minimize the waste of natural resources. Did you know that the average home produces 7.5 tons of CO² every year? Here are a few ways to lower the carbon footprint of every room, including your kitchen: 1) Find creative ways to reuse bottles: Glass bottles probably last a lot longer than you expect. Of course, it is better to find bottles made from biodegradable materials, but that is

not always feasible. The next best alternative is to find ways to reuse them. 2) Install low-flow faucets: Water is a very precious resource.

Unfortunately, our supply of drinkable water is shrinking by the day due to climate change and pollution. Use a low-flow faucet to save as much water as possible. Another option is to install a faucet aerator, which will decrease the flow by increasing airflow at the faucet outlet. 3) Separate the microwave and oven: Appliances can be rearranged to help save energy. For example, separating the refrigerator from heat-producing appliances such as the oven will make it more energyefficient. You will be able to keep the temperature low without running an air conditioner. 4) Purchase eco-friendly cookware: Cookware may not be part of the

Invest in eco-friendly cookware to maintain an eco-friendly lifestyle, you must be aware of the type of material that you select when you are purchasing utensils. The most important thing is to make sure that you don’t have any plastic cookware. There are materials that degrade much easier. Plastic has a lot of harmful chemicals and takes a long time to break down, so it leads to landfill waste problems. 5) Choose Lighting: LED lightbulbs are better alternatives to traditional bulbs. This is because they use up to 90% less energy. They also last 25 times longer, so you will not waste as much energy.

6) Use Energy Star appliances: You should look for appliances with the Energy Star certificate. Homes that use Energy Star appliances use up to 20% less energy than those with traditional appliances. 7) Recycle your trash: While most people appreciate the importance of recycling, they don’t do it nearly enough. However, you can take steps to recycle food waste to make your kitchen eco-friendlier. You can set up separate garbage cans to sort waste more quickly. This is a great initiative and a step in the right direction to start an eco-friendly kitchen.

Buy Beer in cans or bottles?

Is it more environmentally friendly to buy your beer in aluminum cans or glass bottles?

Virgin glass is made by combining sand, soda ash, and limestone in a blast furnace at temperatures of over 1500ºC. Bottles can also be made with up to 100 percent recycled glass. In practice, about 40% recycled glass. Aluminum is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon) and is refined from the ore bauxite through a very energy intensive refining and smelting process that also creates a number of greenhouse gasses including the extremely potent perfluorocarbons (PFCs). Aluminum is by far the most energy demanding material.

The figures for each are improved when recycling is taken into account. All are highly recyclable and energy savings of 93% are possible for recycled aluminum and 57% for glass over virgin product. Despite the savings through recycling, aluminum production is still the least energy efficient although a can is much lighter than a bottle therefore reducing transportation costs. So in summary a close call, glass wins by a narrow margin.

Margaret DeStefano Many readers may not realize it, but razors are a huge source of pollution.

According to the EPA about 2 billion disposable razors are thrown into landfills each year. That’s an astonishing amount of plastic and metal waste that might otherwise have been recycled.

Razors are selling less. One of the newest and most unique changes in this generation is a strong preference for growing beards.

Probably half of the millennial's you meet in colleges, universities, and tech campuses have some form of a beard that makes them feel unique.

Razor companies are a bit panicked right now because of these pesky millennial trends.

This may be in line with their strong desire to show their individuality. It is also visible in stronger demand for tattoos, earrings and other body-altering procedures. Some companies have managed to succeed despite today’s less shaving population, but other brands are seriously struggling and attempting to appeal more to women.

New research by the University of California, Berkeley says that when we don't sleep we do serious damage to our mind and body. We feel irritated, stressed, anxious, and exhausted. We can't focus, or think clearly, and we may shorten our lifespan. We want to sleep, we know we'll feel a lot better when we get good, restful sleep but each night we're exhausted, we finally get to bed, hoping for a good night’s sleep but instead we lie there awake, our minds filled with all kinds of thoughts.

A study published in Sports Medicine out of France was conducted to help better understand ways to improve the 28

sleep of elite soccer players given their chaotic schedules, late-night games and need for recovery through a good night of sleep. The study found that by consuming carbohydrates, such as honey and whole grain bread, and some forms of protein, especially those that contain serotonin-producing tryptophan like turkey, nuts and seeds, it helped promote restorative sleep. Even tryptophan-filled tart cherry juice, which also contains healing properties like antioxidants, could be a great option.

Researchers indicate that the calcium is important because it helps the cells in the brain use the tryptophan to create melatonin, a natural body-producing sleep aid. A glass of warm goat’s milk kefir could do the trick by providing

Research from the Biochemistry and Neurophysiology Unit at the University of Geneva’s Department of Psychiatry indicate that higher levels of magnesium actually helped provide better, more consistent sleep since magnesium is a calming nutrient. Foods like spinach, pumpkin seeds and even dark chocolate can help since they’re loaded with magnesium.

Prescription medications can cause numerous side effects and make you feel jet-lagged upon waking, among other negative side effects. Essential oils, on the other hand, don’t cause these adverse reactions. A study

published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice was conducted with cancer patients, a common group that has serious issues with sleeping well, to better understand whether aromatherapy using essential oils could help provide some much-needed healing shut-eye. Aromasticks were given to patients over a 13-week period.

Of the participants, 94 percent reported using the aromasticks with 92 percent reporting that they would continue use. Bergamot oil and lavender oil, in addition to sandalwood, frankincense and mandarin, were combined to create the useful sleep-inducing blend. Any or all of these safe and natural tips are a possible option on the journey to a better night's sleep!

Summer and Watermelon are inseparable!

Nothing can be more satisfactory on a hot, dusty day than a crisp, juicy slice of watermelon! Watermelons are found almost everywhere in the world.

Although we can find watermelons in our markets throughout the year, the season for watermelon is the summer when they are sweet and of the best quality. Watermelon is a safe alternative to caffeine filled energy drinks which can easily dehydrate us.

It is an excellent source of vitamin C and a very good source of vitamin A, particularly through its concentration of beta-carotene. The beautiful red watermelon is also a source of the potent carotene antioxidant which is called lycopene. These antioxidants travel throughout the body neutralizing free radicals. The lycopene which gives fruits the attractive red color that we find in watermelon may help reduce the risks of prostate cancer. It is a surprising fact that watermelon is the

only fruit that contains higher concentrations of lycopene than any other fresh fruit or vegetable. It is also rich in electrolytes. Food experts recommend watermelon as a very good source of vitamin B6 and a good source of vitamin B1 and magnesium.

Because of its higher water content (approximately ninety percent) and low calorie value, it is ranked more valuable than many other fruits. Watermelon also has a special cooling effect and is exceptionally high in citrulline, an amino acid that our bodies use to make another amino acid, arginine, which is used in the urea cycle to remove ammonia from the body. The antioxidants may help reduce the severity of asthma. It is a good source of thiamin, potassium and magnesium which protect our body from so many diseases. Watermelon is fat free but helps energy production.

1) Think brown when you think of bread. Whole wheat or other whole grain bread should be the choice.

2) Eat potatoes and other vegetables with their skin. 3) Choose vegetables that have edible stems or stalks such as broccoli. 4) Eat fruits that have edible seeds such as raspberries, blackberries and strawberries.

5) Try brown rice, corn tortillas, bulgur wheat or whole wheat pasta.

Reusable Water Bottles

We are all trying to use less plastic, and reusable water bottles are a great start. But, have you ever calculated what the savings is?

Let’s say you spend $30 on a few reusable water bottles and use them everyday in lieu of buying a case of 24 disposable water bottles, which are usually about $10. This may vary. If you drink a commonly recommended amount of water every day (32 oz) that would be about two bottles a day. You would be spending roughly $25 per month on bottles of water, so with two reusable water bottles you will save approximately $300 a year per person. Saving money is a great benefit, and you will be doing your part to create a better environment!
