Our Planet does not need More Money...

Our value system is a little off when it comes to green living.

We seem to think in terms of dollars and cents in just about every area of our lives. This value system does not work with the problems we are facing regarding living sustainably. Our planet doesn't need money, it needs behavioral change. Small things do matter. For example, we could pledge to stop using the dishwasher for small loads, using the dryer for clothes, start bicycling, taking a bus or choosing to ride a train rather than a plane. That's just the beginning, When we talk about greening, it should include increasing local vegetation. In areas experiencing drought (hello!), using more succulents, and not planting invasive species. Our individual lifestyles may all be different, but with one common goal. Let's individually evaluate what "indulgence" we can do without to help save our planetary home.

Keeping Cambria a unique and welcoming community is the goal of "Beautify Cambria." Its latest project is to replace old individual magazine kiosks outside of the Cookie Crock with a custom built kiosk that will hold and display local magazines. The new kiosk, made of wood with a copper roof, will be installed by summer of 2020.

Greta Thunberg, the sixteen-year-old Swedish climate activist who captured the world’s attention with her clear messaging about the climate crisis, could be the poster child for this phrase. We have all heard her name but have we really listened to her words? Here are some of the wise truths from this teenager that have impressed me: This is not political. It is not fear-mongering.

This is science.

People say that I oversimplify the climate crisis by calling it a black and white issue. Yes, it is the most complex issue that we have ever faced. But the solution is black and white: we need to stop the emissions of greenhouse gases. Because either we limit the warming to 1.5°C over preindustrial levels or we don’t. Either we reach a tipping point where we start a chain reaction with events way beyond human control, or we don’t.

Either we go on as a civilization, or we don’t. There are no gray areas when it comes to survival.

I want you to panic. To feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act.

Greta is right on all counts. But I do wonder.

Tiffins a trend!

Several communities – including the County of San Luis Obispo – are jumping on the “ban wagon” to prohibit Styrofoam products, and rightly so.

Though very convenient for restaurant to-go orders and bringing home leftovers, those items are made of nonbiodegradable polystyrene. Moreover, they are typically used only once before heading for the landfill.

However, you won’t lose the convenience of these products if you go the tiffin route!

A tiffin is essentially a box that clamps shut, typically round and made of metal. It’s often used for transporting food, be it a meal or bringing home restaurant leftovers. As the wise knower of all things – aka Wikipedia – states: “ ‘Tiffin’ is an Anglo-Indian word, derived from obsolete English slang ‘tiffing’ (to sip), for a light lunch or afternoon snack, and sometimes, by extension, for the box it is carried in.”

The bottom line is that using a tiffin saves on packaging, especially all those Styrofoam clamshells. And, because tiffins are made of metal, they’re easy-peasy to clean by hand or in the dishwasher. Of course, any reusable container could fit the bill too, but obviously a tiffin isn’t as fragile as glass, and it’s not a plastic container – which will ultimately end up in the landfill like the Styrofoam we’re trying to avoid in the first place.

Though it’s not very feasible to package to-go orders in your tiffin, you can bring it to a restaurant and pack up your leftovers. I’ve found this often sparks some fun conversation, usually with the server. Perhaps initially they think I’m trying to steal the salt and pepper shakers, but once I explain the concept and point out that it saves on to-go containers, they usually think my tidy tiffin is pretty darn cool!

Cupping is a suction technique designed to pull toxin build-up and injury from the body’s deeper tissue to the surface of the skin. Cupping also rehydrates the muscle layers and fascia.

The cells of the body use oxygen and give off carbon dioxide; when the energy is blocked, the cell waste or carbon dioxide becomes blocked. This is called acid or toxic build-up.

Physical pain implies a blockage in the flow of energy through a particular area. The story of pizza is long and unsure. The term ‘pizza’ first appeared in a Latin text from the southern Italian town of Gaeta. In the 16th century in Naples, flatbread was referred to as pizza. The first “pomodoro and mozzarella” pizza was prepared in Napoli around mid 1800, during the visit of Italian King Umberto I and his wife, Queen Margherita. The story is that Raffaele Esposito, the best pizza chef of that time, made three different pizzas for the King and Queen. One of these was with tomato puree and mozzarella. The Queen loved this pizza, and thanked chef Raffaele in writing. Since then, tomato puree and mozzarella pizza is called Margherita.

I am frequently asked, “What exactly do you do?” I am a DO, Doctor of Osteopathy. In the US, there are two paths to become a physician. The most known path produces physicians known as MD’s, Medical Doctors. The other includes exactly the same scientific training that MD’s get but it also includes how the musculoskeletal system interacts with all the specific medical conditions. DO’s and MD’s both complete a medical school, board examinations and residency training. In today’s medicine, most are indistinguishable.

Some still utilize the traditional hands-on manipulative medicine. We acknowledge the dynamic choice that the body makes every single moment as it works toward its’ own self-healing or homeostatic process.

We are trained to look at a patient’s medical condition from this

comprehensive, more holistic, viewpoint. My practice utilizes very fine motion that has body-wide expression known as Osteopathy in the Cranial Field. This work is very helpful for patient’s living with chronic conditions who have trouble with more aggressive manipulation. This allows, not only for freer and less painful movement, but also increased nutritional support into the tissues, waste elimination out of the tissues, better nervous system communication with the whole body including organs, muscles and bones.

This work assists the homeostatic process to be more effective and efficient. Healing is best left up to the body itself. It does, however, occasionally need assistance with antibiotics, surgery, or casting for a fracture on the way to healing.

Nail polishes today tend to be synthetic chemical cocktails often comprised of the "toxic trio," formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate. With over 50% of women using nail polish worldwide, that means a lot of toxic waste not only placed in direct contact with humans but the waste is also of concern to the environment. It is recommended to NOT recycle nail polish jars (even though they are glass) because of the toxic contamination. In fact, it is advised not to throw your used jars into your general waste but instead to dispose

Surely this gives us a hint as to its contents. Instead, look for 'green' nail polish products that are often waterbased or plant based and contain no petroleum products. Money... give it freely!

At the turn of the twentieth century, a Scottish-born steel tycoon named Andrew Carnegie became the world’s second richest man. He was 66 years old in 1901 when he retired, and he believed people with means were morally obligated to do good with their money. Over the next ten years, Carnegie focused on largescale philanthropy. He funded scientific and medical research. He established pension funds for teachers and professors. He built more than 3,000 public libraries and gave vast sums of money to universities. He loved music and funded music conservatories and donated money to build organs. He gave away money to promote world peace. Today his name is synonymous with having created something of value for many people. Yet another case involves a well-known author who conducted a series of personal experiments. He started to give things away, all the while progressing in his business. At first, a sweater he valued. Then, a book he enjoyed and wanted to keep. Finally, a gift certificate to a fine restaurant. At first, he felt a sense of loss and was troubled. After awhile, he began to notice a strange pattern: although he would give without expecting a reward, rewards–tangible and otherwise–often came in return. Whatever he gave away, he seemed to gain back more. Returns varied from self-respect, a boosted mood, or simply a returned favor. One surprise was a happier client, who brought increased business traffic back to him. We never fully know what good can happen when we give money away. Giving money away blindly is not what this is about. It’s vital to research whatever cause you choose to give to.

In 2018, humans generated approximately 2.01 billion tons of waste worldwide.

To put things into perspective, 2.01 billion tons is comparable to 287,142,857 elephants or 275,342 Eiffel Towers. Certainly, that volume of waste sent into landfills is a significant concern. And along with it, potentially reusable resources are continuously wasted as a result of careless disposal. Even more shocking, e-waste is responsible for 50 million tons of the total generated waste produced each year. Not to mention, it accounts for 70% of the toxic waste lying in landfills.

When dealing with the improper disposal of e-waste hazardous materials, there is a constant risk of land and water pollution through contamination. For example, batteries leak heavy metals such as lead, barium, and lithium into the soil when placed in a landfill. As a result, these heavy metals seep into groundwater channels, which eventually enter larger bodies of water like ponds or streams.

As we all read more about climate change, it's only natural to wonder what we can do individually to prevent climate degradation.

Fortunately, all of our lifestyle choices influence the environment, so we all have more power than we might realize.

The choice of how much meat or dairy or fish we consume all has environmental implications as does whether our food is grown locally or transported from far away. But one of the biggest choices we make that affects our environment (as well as our body's directly) is the choice of whether to eat or grow produce conventionally or whether to eat/grow organic.

The choice to grow food organically enriches the soil whereas conventional agriculture drains it of minerals and organisms (like earthworms) that aerate the soil and help it to be healthier. The use of insecticides winds up killing beneficial insects like bees and chemical herbicides not only make the soil toxic but herbicides (like "RoundUp"= glyphosate) and synthetic fertilizers leach into groundwater and find their way into the ocean where they produce dead zones and toxic algae blooms. Organic produce contains more trace minerals than conventional produce. by The “Green” Franciscan Sister, Janet Corcoran, OSF A gentleman who was born in 1182 and died in 1226 demonstrated a reverence for all of creation. He is known as St. Francis of Assisi. In 1979, he was proclaimed the Patron Saint of Ecology in the Catholic Church because of his inclusiveness and reverence for all of creation. St. Francis considered everyone and everything as brother and sister to him, and he is often quoted by various philosophies and religions because of his respect for all of creation. St. Francis had "heart-ti-tude" for all.

Each day was Mother Earth Day to him.

In the United States, a day is set aside to specifically focus on the respect for all of creation. It is known as Earth Day. It is said that a man named John McConnell came up with the idea for Mother Earth Day. John submitted a proposal to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors that was approved for the inauguration of the first Mother Earth Day. Therefore, Mother Earth Day was held on March 21, 1970 in the city and county of San Francisco. Meanwhile, Senator Gaylord Nelson is also referred to as the originator of Mother Earth Day. In the spring of 1970 he announced that a nationwide Earth Day would take place on April 22, 1970. In some areas it is observed on other days. However, both men took positive actions to make us more aware of our responsibility to be environmentally friendly in our day-to-day lives.

Gingivitis...

what exactly is it?

What causes gingivitis? Plaque (bacteria) also called biofilm is a sticky film that is always on your teeth. Plaque hardens when it's left on your teeth and gums.

Hardened plaque is also called tartar or calculus. Bacteria that live in the plaque can cause your body to react and your gums to become inflamed. Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease (gum disease) red, swollen gums that bleed easily.

Gingivitis can be reversed with professional cleanings by a registered dental hygienist or dentist every six months and keeping up with your dental homecare on a daily basis.

It is recommended to use a soft bristle manuel toothbrush or electric toothbrush two times a day and brush for two minutes each time. Flossing, or other interdental cleaners like soft-pics, proxy-brushes are essential to clean between the teeth. If gingivitis is

Lavender has analgesic, antibacterial, antidepressant, anti-fungal, antiinflammatory, antiseptic, and sedative uses. When used topically, the essential oil may help treat acne, athlete’s foot, and bee stings. Use lavender tea as a mouthwash to counter bad breath, or in a footbath to relieve fatigue.

Vaping

hazardous to

your health!

The long-term health risks of heavy vaping are still unknown. Many flavors contain diacetyl and other toxic chemicals, which have the potential to cause lung damage. The epidemic of vaping-related illnesses that are sweeping the country, currently over 500 patients with eight deaths, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), do not appear to be due to standard e-cigarettes. The damage to the lungs appears to be the result of oil, a condition known as lipoid pneumonia, whereas most if not all e-cigarette products available in convenience stores are water-based. In states where THC or CBD vape products are legal, it is not clear that FDA has jurisdiction unless the product is making inappropriate medical claims. This regulatory gap is part of why there are no set standards. CBD oil, derived from hemp, is now legal throughout the U.S., provided that it doesn’t have more than 0.3 percent THC and it is no longer a controlled substance, making it even more difficult to regulate. All vaping devices share the hype of a perceived medical benefit, whether they state this benefit openly, but without proof, or not. We already know enough to say that vaping is bad for you and vaping oil-based products is far worse. Unfortunately, it is far too late to turn back the clock and make vaping available by prescription-only. But it is not too late to define a standard for devices and mixtures and apply it across the board. It is imperative that we do a better job of policing the suppliers of illegal vapes, too. The life and lungs of so many young people are at stake.

DIY Baby Food... yes!

When you're starting out with a new baby, breastfeeding is the healthiest, most convenient and eco-friendly option.

If it works for you, go for it. Once you're on to solid foods, there are a lot of options out there but those increasing options seem to have been accompanied by an increasing level of packaging.

Pre-made food might win on convenience (and yes, we acknowledge the persuasive power of persistent toddlers at supermarkets) but if you have the time, cooking with fresh ingredients is cheaper and healthier, involves less packaging (so long as your veggies don't come wrapped in 10 layers of plastic) and you can guarantee it has less sugar and salt in it too. Simply put in the blender, divide it into meal-sized containers, and you have several healthy meals ready to go. The trick to making this work often lies in planning ahead so you're less tempted to grab convenience food out of desperation. For those who find assurance in order, there's also a lot of comfort to be gained from planning your meals for the week and shopping to suit.

Research suggests that shopping with a list is also the best way to avoid food waste and save money too.

It's a fact. We love our animals.

But, what if it came with a benefit that might be a pleasant surprise?

Recent studies have proven that apart from having a faithful companion, dog owners tend to have better cardiovascular health and physical stamina. In the study called The Kardiovize Brno 2030, researchers studied a population from Central Europe that was made up of 1769 people, aged from 25 to 64 years old, 44.3% of them males, and with no history of heart diseases. Within a couple of years researchers compared dog owners and people who had other pets or no pets at all across parameters like cardiovascular health, physical activity levels, blood pressure, smoking, etc.. Out of all the patients, 24.3% had a dog, and it turned out this group of people smoked less, were more

physically active, and had ideal levels of blood glucose and “good� cholesterol compared with other participants.

These and other physical parameters resulted in better cardiovascular health and lower risk of heart diseases.

Scientists explain these health benefits by the fact that dog owners are more physically active than people who have other pets or no pets at all. If you have a dog, you’re most likely walking him or her yourself, rain or shine, and being more physically active than many other people without even noticing it. Other findings also revealed that young and elderly people walk their pets more often and consequently have higher health benefits, and that dogs one year old or younger and dogs of large breeds were walked more often and for longer periods of time respectively. So, if you have a pooch, congratulations. If not, maybe you should give it some thought!

Teach respect for the outdoors: Go for a brief nature walk, learn lessons outdoors, observe wildlife, or simply relax in nature. Such experiences can be exhilarating, fun and inspirational.

For the next generation, they are an essential part of life if we want them to protect Earth for the generation after them. There’s no reason why young children can’t learn to respect and cherish the

Avocados don't have to turn brown!

Don't you hate how the sliced half that you store in the fridge turns brown and dry so quickly after slicing in half? Here are ways to keep your avocado fresh and green even after storing: Sealable Bag: Place the avocado inside a sealable bag and suck or squeeze out the air from the bag before sealing it. This method prevents the air from coming in contact with the avocado flesh. Olive Oil: Brush the exposed part of the avocado with olive oil before placing it in an airtight container. The olive oil serves as a ‘barrier’ between the air and the flesh, preventing the discoloration of the avocado. Lemon or Lime Juice: Slice a lemon in half and squeeze the juice on the avocado flesh, then place it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The

acid found in the lemon juice is known to inhibit oxidation. Onion Chunks: Slice an onion into big chunks and put it in a container. Place the avocado on top of the chunks, then cover the container and store it in the fridge. You may also put some more chunks on top of the avocado to achieve better results. This method is the best one so far, and it has been proven by many avocado lovers out there.

WHY SOLSTICE? We have been asked many times why we chose the name Solstice for our Green Directory. Twice each year, the Earth is at a point in its orbit, where one hemisphere is most inclined away from the Sun. This causes the Sun to appear at its farthest below the celestial equator when viewed from the far hemisphere.

It creates the longest day (summer) or longest night (winter). The Sun appears to “stand still,” which is the literal Latin translation of the word solstice. It can go no further before returning to balance. It then begins its journey back to the point of equinox (equal day and night). We are now at the point of “solstice” for our species and all living things on Earth. We too must begin our journey back to balance on this beautiful shimmering blue planet we call home, if we are to survive.

We are well into 2020 and statistically most have failed at succeeding in maintaining their New Year’s resolutions.

Resolutions we make frequently involve self-improvement resolve to “do better”, “try harder” and “be more”. This self-imposed pressure usually creates unrealistic expectations and extra stress, upending our joyfulness.

Embrace Spring as an opportunity for non-resolution. Let’s replace resolve with being kind and patient with ourselves.

Here are seven simple ways to experience more joy in 2020.

1) Spend time with yourself.

Choosing to spend time alone can benefit all your relationships and regulate your emotions. 2) Take time to do nothing at all. Being busy makes you feel harried, joyless and can cause the illusion of being productive. 3) Cultivate more casual friendships. Friendliness with dog-owners at the park, the cashier at the grocery store or your

To misquote Bob Dylan: "the times may, at long, long last, be a-changing."

Basically, our economy is a one-way street. Someone makes stuff, we buy it, use it then throw it away. This is done without much thought to the consequence. By contrast, a "circular" economy gets the most out of the resources we use by keeping them in use as long as they have a value.

It requires the manufacturer to make things that are designed to last, not single use, able to be repaired, and when it comes to their end-of-life can be taken apart, reused or recycled into other stuff. This however requires a change in the mindset of all aspects of

the economy. It’s about changing our approach to stuff. moving away from throw-away fashion, and badly made appliances that break down soon after the warranty runs out. It’s global technology redesigning products with a longer life, home builders delivering more energy efficient homes, the fashion industry taking a longer-term view of "seasonal collections," a better approach to the maddening excess packaging, and much, much more.

It's what’s known as the "circular" economy. It seems that more and more people are becoming sensitive and uncomfortable to the status quo. Could something be growing in public consciousness? Here's hoping that this year will be the start towards that so much more resourceful "circular" world!
