...the new epidemic

I know. We’re all busy. We have however, had so many incredible technological innovations since the 1950’s. So, what’s happened to the idea that these new additions to our life would give us more free time? Actually we seem to have less than we did decades ago!

Strange isn’t it?

For most us, the lines between work and home have become blurred. We are ALL on our devices, ALL the time. It seems that smart phones and laptops have canceled the boundaries between the office and home. When the day is “over” we are back online. We’ve apparently created a world in which we have less time less time to just…“BE.” For many, relaxation often takes the form of action-filled films (often violent) or fast-paced sports.

It’s not just adults. Many kids have a “busy” calendar too. Are we losing the ability to personally relate to each other? Is spending time and getting to know another on a deeper level becoming a lost art? The “human connection” will never be replaced by technology.

There is no magic cure for our over committed lives. There is perhaps a more loving answer to; “How are you?” How about; “I’m busy.....but not too busy for YOU.” Margaret Hennessy Founder/Publisher

Ban Fracking!

Dedicated to stop the growth of unwanted and risky oil production, the Coalition to Protect San Luis Obispo County has launched a petition to ban fracking and new oil and gas wells in unincorporated parts of the county. The plan is to successfully qualify and pass an initiative for the November 2018 ballot. The coalition needs to gather 13,000 signatures in nine weeks in order to qualify its initiative. Offshore drilling in SLO

Imagine standing on your favorite local beach – Pismo, Avila, Cayucos – looking out across the water at a row of oil rigs, stretching north and south along the coastline. Big, boxy, imposing structures, obscuring what used to be just sky meeting water for as far as the eye can see. Imagine the first spill. A rig explodes, a pipe bursts. Gallons of oil pouring into the water, killing hundreds of sea lions, dolphin, and other marine life.

Pelicans and sea gulls, coated in oil, lay dead and dying on the shore. Imagine our hotels, our restaurants and shops empty, because visitors no longer want to come to our beaches. And tourism – our bread and butter – drying up as a result. This very well could be our future if we don’t resist the federal government’s latest plan to open all U.S. coastal waters to oil drilling. Have we learned nothing from the 2015 Refugio disaster where 140,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the waters of one of the most biologically diverse areas along the California Coast? Or the catastrophic 1969 spill in Santa Barbara?

SLO County needs to join all of the other national coastal communities that are fighting against this potentially environmental and economic atrocity. We need to protect our precious Central Coast from off-shore drilling, and to raise our collective voices in a battle cry with a clear message: No Way. Not Here.

Handles...

You know when you go food shopping and they have the wipes to clean your cart handle? Do you use them? Every time you touch a tainted cart handle you pick up thousands of germs. If you rub your eyes or touch your mouth, you are giving these microbes access into your body. Teething babies can become ill after putting their mouths on dirty cart components. Washing your hands after using a shopping cart is a good idea, but by that time it is usually too late. The best solution is to treat cart components prior to using them. Since most stores

rarely clean their shopping carts, it’s up to the shopper. There is a reason cart wipes are becoming a national trend.

Several studies have surfaced that reveal what really resides on our shopping cart handles and baby seats. Think about it. Most carts are used by at least a hundred people each week. This includes people who may be carrying the flu or cold virus. That baby seat may look like a perfect spot for your fresh produce, but it can harbor germs left by an infant with a soiled diaper. Leaking bags of seafood or raw chicken can leave

traces of salmonella and other harmful contaminants all over cart components.

A recent study at the University of Arizona reveals just how filthy and germ-laden shopping carts can be.

Researchers swabbed 85 carts from four different states. Over 72 percent of the carts tested positive for fecal bacteria.

When they examined some of the samples, they discovered Escherichia coli, also known as E. coli, on over half of them. Those conducting the study actually found more fecal bacteria on grocery cart handles than you would

typically find in a bathroom. The main reason for this is simply that bathrooms are usually cleaned more often than shopping carts. High quality cart wipes contain a non-alcohol sanitizing solution. This is good because alcohol can dry out your skin. Benzalkonium Chloride is the most common chemical found in the best wipes on the market.

Practice health safety by wiping down the most common areas such as the seat and handle and kill millions of germs you would otherwise come in contact with.

Earth Day... then and now!

One of the most asked questions is: "How do we create a thriving economy without destroying the planet?" The problems are complex, global, and deeply entrenched into our lifestyle and cannot be easily solved. It requires multi-level action: federal and local governments, national and global corporations, large and small businesses, as well as others. Before there was Earth Day, there was the Survival Faire, an ecology extravaganza that did not survive for even one year.

But its signature action is still remembered by those who were at San Jose State College in early 1970. That was when a group of students bought a brand-new, never-started Ford Maverick, then pushed it from the dealer’s lot into the center of campus, where it was ceremoniously buried in a pit, 12 feet deep. The elaborate funeral procession was conceived of as an anti-internal combustion, anti-smog statement to cap off the week long fair, which itself resulted in one of the first environmental studies departments to be established at any university in the nation.

We all agree that investing in fossil fuel companies is a bad idea, but we still fill our tanks with gasoline. The real work is getting electric vehicle infrastructure built, advancing battery and renewable energy technology, and implementing these new technologies once they arrive. Today’s far more sophisticated version of car burying gestures include efforts to divest pension funds from fossil fuel companies and suing energy companies for the environmental damage they’ve caused. It worked with the tobacco companies; why not the oil companies? We are talking about saving the planet for our children.

Turmeric Time!

Judging from the trending chatter in the food world, turmeric is finally getting its day in the sun. And it’s about time. Turmeric has been a vital culinary and medicinal ingredient in India and the Middle East for thousands of years. It’s best known here as the spice that gives curry powder its vibrant yellow color and subtle depth of warm bitterness. You can use turmeric on its own to punch up the color and taste of homemade dressings and dips, and combine it with vinegar to naturally color Easter eggs an earthy yellow-orange. Most consumers are familiar with seeing ground turmeric on spice racks, but the fresh root is starting to become more available as well. In the grocery store, look for it where you would find fresh ginger, usually in the produce section. Some local farmers are also growing it, so keep an eye peeled at Central Coast farmers’ markets. The turmeric root resembles a carrot-like

version of ginger root. Turmeric and ginger are close relatives, and can be used in many of the same ways – grate it into a stir-fry, finely slice it into matchsticks for salad, or toss a knob in to flavor a soup. (Remember though, that turmeric’s coloring properties will also work on your hands and cutting surfaces!) Health wise, the heavy hitters in turmeric are compounds known as curcuminoids, and the star of that team is curcumin. Its strength is as an anti-inflammatory and an anti-oxidant. According to WebMD, it’s used to treat arthritis, joint pain, high cholesterol, depression, liver problems … and that’s just a short list. However, turmeric itself contains a relatively low percentage of curcumin, so the biggest wallop will come from taking a curcumin extract or turmeric supplement. But don’t leave your taste buds out of the fun -- go ahead and dive into that dish of Indian or Moroccan food too!

Coconut Curry

Recipe: 2 tbsp ghee or coconut oil / 2 cups diced yellow onion / 2 cups diced carrot or yam or fennel bulb / 2 cups diced savoy cabbage OR green cabbage OR broccoli crowns / 1/2 lb chopped fresh green beans / 2 bunches mustard or collard greens / 2 tsp dried basil OR 1 bunch fresh minced basil / 2 tsp ground yellow curry / 1 tsp ground ginger / 1 tsp ground coriander / 1 can full-fat OR light coconut milk / 1tsp fine ground unrefined salt / juice of 2 ripe limes / 1 tsp fresh minced ginger root / optional: 1-2tsp fresh minced garlic / optional: 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper. In a large stainless steel or cast iron frying pan or wok with a tight-fitting lid, place ghee or coconut oil over medium heat, spreading evenly over bottom of pan. Immediately add diced onion and saute on medium-low heat for about 4 minutes until they’re translucent.

Add water, ground spices (curry, coriander, ginger), diced carrot or yam, and optional fresh ginger/garlic and cayenne. Stir until well mixed and cover for about 2 minutes on medium heat. Stir again, add green beans and simmer another 2 minutes. At any point, you can add another 1/2 cup of water or so, to keep the ground spices from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Stir again, and layer cabbage and broccoli on top of simmering root veggies. Add optional fresh garlic here if you like it really garlic-y. After another minute, stir again and add kale. Cover and cook another minute or so until all the greens are slightly wilted.

Add coconut milk, basil, sea salt, and the lime juice evenly to everything and stir again. I love this recipe over brown rice.

TREES Trees have dominated the world’s oldest living organisms since the dawn of our species.

They are our silent companions, permeating almost every area of life. German forester Peter Wohlleben explores in The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate. Wohlleben chronicles what his own experience of managing a forest in the Eifel mountains in Germany has taught him. Here is an interesting example. "The average tree grows its branches out until it encounters the branch tips of a neighboring tree of the same height. It doesn’t grow any wider because the air and better light in this space are already taken. However, it heavily reinforces the branches it has extended, so you get the impression that there’s quite a shoving match going on up there. But a pair of true friends is careful right from the outset not to grow overly thick branches in each other’s direction. The trees don’t want to take anything away from each other, and so they develop sturdy branches only at the outer edges of their crowns, that is to say, only in the direction of “non-friends.” So there you have it. A good example of "how to be a better friend." And, you learned it from a tree!

In the US, there are two paths to become a physician. The most known path produces physicians known as MD’s, Medical Doctors. The other includes exactly the same scientific training that MD’s get but it also includes how the musculoskeletal system interacts with all the specific medical conditions. DO’s and MD’s both complete a medical school, board examinations and residency training. In today’s medicine, most are indistinguishable. We still utilize the traditional hands-on manipulative medicine. We acknowledge the dynamic choice that the body makes every single moment as it works toward its’ own self-healing or homeostatic process. We are trained to look at a patient’s medical condition from this comprehensive, more holistic, viewpoint.

Community Garden

by Shane Clary Today's youth are predicted to have shorter lifespans than their parents' generation due to diet-related illness.

Earth Genius is changing that. Nestled next to the Laguna Golf course on Los Osos Valley Road lies a vital space for health, happiness, and equity. No new community gardens have been built in San Luis Obispo for the last 7 years, and a wait list holds dozens of names.

In the meantime, type II diabetes and obesity rates have continued to rise. Community gardens provide space for people to meet, build relationships, and produce fresh, organic produce. This garden will add 42 plots, a food forest, composting, and benches to fill this need. After nearly four years of planning, permitting and construction, San Luis Obispo's newest community garden is nearly complete!

This is the first community garden in the county that uses recycled water.

The recycled water is processed with tertiary treatment in San Luis Obispo's new, state-of-the-art facilities, and is suitable for irrigation of vegetable and fruit crops. Recycling water this way helps reduce demands on virgin water sources, limiting a need for new dams, pipes, and wells that take a toll on our environment. Volunteer driven and community funded, the bulk of this project has been completed by volunteers--over 300 of us! The San Luis Obispo Kiwanis Clubs have united to provide over 1/2 of the funding and many hours of sweat equity.

Many individuals have supported the garden with donations of $5 - $1000, with over $16,000 raised so far for the project. Their sponsorship will literally create garden space for those without. Hour for hour, 90% of the labor has been donated by community

Have you ever thought about the waste that you produce? Some of the byproducts of our life are unavoidable, but many can be reduced, possibly reused, or recycled. Look at what you do, be aware of what you buy.

Whenever possible, buy in bulk and reuse grocery bags and food containers.

Before throwing something away, ask yourself “can I use this as a resource?”

Here are some common waste items and creative ways of using them to benefit your household. Tea bags, paper products, coffee filters and coffee grounds are all great items to use in a home vermiculture compost bin.

Carrot tops, old greens, apples, and yard clippings are a delicious snack for chickens, pigs, and goats or can be

saved and used to make soup stock.

Garden weeds, animal manure, and small branches can be turned into soil in a compost pile. Lawn clippings and leaves make fantastic mulch for your garden or trees. Cardboard boxes can be flattened, layered on the ground, and covered with mulch to create an area with no weeds or to begin a garden bed. Egg cartons make perfect seed starting trays and plastic bags should be washed and reused over and over again. The trash bin is a last resort!

Trash does not get taken “away,” there is no “away.” It only gets buried in a local landfill to sit for thousands of years on a planet with finite space and increasing population.

Kale and Apple salad

A delicious, crunchy, and healthy refreshing salad that is gluten and dairy-free.

Recipe: 4 cups fresh kale / 1 apple / 1 lemon / ¼ cup extra virgin olive/¼ cup cranberries. Wash kale, remove stalk, and tear into bite-sized pieces. Bring a medium pot of water to a boil, place kale in pot and simmer for 2 - 3 minutes until kale is just wilted. Remove kale immediately and place in a bowl of ice water, this will help it retain crunch and color! Once kale cools put in colander to drain. While kale cools chop an apple into small pieces. In a large bowl squeeze the juice of 1 lemon and mix with ¼ cup of extra virgin olive oil. Add drained kale and apple, mix well. Add salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with ¼ cup of sliced almonds.

Birds...

A study, conducted at the University of Exeter, a public research university in the United Kingdom, attributed mental health benefits to people who were able to see birds, shrubs and trees around their homes. It surveyed the mental health in over 270 people from different ages, incomes and ethnic groups, and found that those who spent less time out of doors than usual in the previous week were more likely to report they were anxious or depressed.

The study showed that people living in neighborhoods with more birds, shrubs, and trees are less likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and stress. The study did not find a relationship between the species of birds and mental health, but rather the number of birds they could see from their windows, in the garden or in their neighborhood.

Previous studies have found that the ability of most people to identify different species is low, suggesting that for most people it is interacting with birds, not just specific birds, that provides well-being. Birds around the home, and nature in general, show great promise in preventative health care, making cities healthier, happier places to live. The conclusion: There was positive association between birds, shrubs and trees and better mental health.

Gums Healthy Several years ago, a major heart journal and a major periodontal journal simultaneously published a consensus paper. Besides exercising and, of course, getting regular dental checkups and flossing, choosing certain foods may also help you protect both your gums and your heart: Green tea: Scientists reported in 2009 that Japanese men who drank a daily cup of green tea significantly lowered their risk of developing gum disease. The researchers believe antioxidants called catechins in green tea are the key. Catechins hamper the body's inflammatory response to the bacteria that cause gum disease. Whole grains: A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that men who ate four or more servings of whole grains a day reduced their risk of periodontal disease by 23 percent.

Compared to refined carbohydrates (white bread, white rice), whole grains (oatmeal, brown rice) are digested more slowly, avoiding spikes in blood sugar, tempers the body's production of inflammatory proteins and lowers the risk of both gum and heart disease. Animals

I have been blessed by the company of pets my entire life. My parents were animal lovers; Dad was a Biologist who occasionally brought critters home from the lab. There were years when the menagerie included dogs, cats, guinea pigs, chickens, horses, finches, hamsters, mice, fish, turtles, frogs, and anything that needed rescuing. I learned a lot, and still do, from spending time with my beloved two and four legged friends. Here are just a few of the lessons I have taken away from being with animals throughout my life: 1) Live in the Present: Animals fully appreciate what is happening right NOW. They savor the current moment. What happened yesterday is long gone, so they sure don’t dwell on it, and they don’t give a hoot about what might happen next week. Have you ever watched a ballloving dog when it’s play time? The earth could shake, a siren could be

blaring, but nothing matters more than the ball about to go sailing through the air. We humans could benefit from staying focused on the now rather than worrying about what might happen in the future, or fretting about what happened yesterday. Right here, right now, that’s what matters. Just ask your dog. 2) Be a Good Listener: Ever notice how you can spill your heart out to your pet, and they seem to pick up on every emotion in between the words? Animals have an innate ability to be empathic, and they never argue or disagree. They don’t interrupt to get their own point across, they have no agenda, they never tell you what you are feeling is not okay. Animals seem to understand us and have compassion; they are there with us through our heartbreaks, our celebrations, our trials, our sad as well as our happy times. We

Teach us could all learn a little something from our animals about patiently listening to a friend in need. 3) Unconditional Love: No matter if you have been away all day and left your furry friend alone.

Even though they may have stared at the door or the driveway the entire time of your absence, awaiting your return, your arrival brings incredible happiness that expresses in the form of tail wags, body wiggles, and face licks. What human could ever give that kind of love greeting? And it doesn’t matter if you were in a rotten mood this morning. Maybe you yelled at them, ignored them, or were generally not easy to be around. All is forgotten, and you will be greeted with nothing but love. What a great example for us humans, to give love so freely. 4) Forgiveness: We have all heard tragic

stories of animals horribly abused at the hands of heartless people. Yet, these same animals respond beautifully to loving treatment from kind-hearted humans. Sometimes the sweetest, most devoted pets are those who were once abused. Animals forgive easily.

They give us the benefit of the doubt regardless of what has happened in the past. How magnificent it would be if we humans were able to forgive and let go so easily. 5) Accept Everyone: I love to watch my dogs as they are running on the beach. They want to greet everyone, they wag their tails excitedly, expecting friendly greetings in return. They pretty much act that way everywhere, with everyone. What a wonderful world it would be if people gave each other the gift of acceptance and a joyful greeting, no matter their appearance, politics, agenda, background, IQ, or education

Roses...

by Ruth Maddocks Roses have seduced people of many cultures for thousands of years with their fragrance and beauty.

Greek legend tells that the red rose came from the blood of the goddess Aphrodite who pricked herself on its thorns rushing to the aide of her dying lover Adonis. Cleopatra won over Mark Anthony’s affections by filling her palace knee-deep in fragrant rose petals, knowing the romantic power of their scent. Roses were first cultivated in Persian & Chinese gardens. They were used in ancient Incan cooking and highly revered by the Egyptians.

In early times, a rose hung over a table meant that any information spoken in the room was a secret and people were sworn to silence. Thus the expression, "sub rosa" (literally "under the rose") means "in greatest confidence." During the Middle Ages, the Catholic rosary was made from rose hips (the fruit of the plant) and thus

its name. Still today, the beads of the rosary used by the Catholics resemble rose hips with their berry hip-shape.

Beyond their romantic symbolism and sensory delight for the eyes and nose, roses have historically been used for a variety of medicinal purposes. In AD 77 the Roman writer Pliny recorded 32 disorders that responded to treatment with rose preparations. Medieval herbals contained many entries that tell of the restorative properties of rose preparations. Native Americans made powder from rose petals to apply to fever sores and blisters and soaked the petals in rainwater for an eye wash.

Rose petals have a myriad of health benefits in modern day. Rose petal tea is soothing for mild sore throats and is helpful in treating colds and flu. It has a cooling effect on the body so it can reduce fevers. Rose petal tea is a mild diuretic so it is useful as a digestive tonic. Rose hips are the

gift of the angels

for Gentle Healing fruit of the plant left after the petals have dropped off. Rose hips have a tart flavor similar to that of cranberries.

The fruits are best harvested after the first frost, which makes them turn bright red and slightly soft. Although most rose bushes produce rose hips, the tastiest for eating purposes come from the Rugusa Rose. Rosehips have a higher concentration of Vitamin C than any citrus fruit. They are also rich in vitamins A, B, E and K. In addition, they contain antioxidant flavonoids known to defend against cancer and cardiovascular disease. Studies have indicated that the anti-inflammatory properties of rose hips are useful in treating osteoarthritis. Scientists in Denmark reported that patients who daily consumed standardized rose hip powder (made from dog rose) experienced significantly less joint

stiffness and pain, and an improved general well-being and mood after 3 to 4 months of treatment. Rose hip tea has similar benefits as rose petals to relieve colds and flu, digestive complaints and urinary tract infections. Both the petals and hips have also been known to fight anxiety and depression. They have toning and anti-aging properties for the skin. Rose hips and rose petals can be used in apple sauce, soups and stews, syrups, vinegars, puddings, marmalade, tarts, breads, and pie, or made into a jam or jelly. Rose hip tea is prepared by simmering dried or fresh rose hips for 20 minutes. About 2 tablespoons of berries are used per pint of water. The acid-tasting tea may be sweetened with honey. Rose hip tea makes a delicious blend with hibiscus flowers.

Many homeowners are unaware that there are a multitude of poisonous, yet beautiful plants growing along the Central Coast. Some examples are Nightshade, Morning Glory, and Oleander. It’s essential that children learn to leave fruits and berries alone and to keep all plant parts out of their mouths. It is equally important to keep an eye on your four legged friends, as dogs enjoy chewing and don’t think twice about putting strange things in their mouths.

Recipe: 1 1/2 cup white flour, organic/1/2 cup raw organic sugar/3/4 tsp baking soda/3 tsp baking powder/1/2 tsp cinnamon/1/3 cup rolled oats/1/2 tsp sea salt/1 tsp lemon juice/1/4 cup warm water + 1 tsp flax seeds /1/2 cup melted vegan butter/3 Tbsp almond milk/1 tsp vanilla extract/1/2 cup mini chocolate chips, vegan/1 cup raw walnuts. Preheat oven to 350 degrees, line baking pan with parchment paper. Mix together flax and almond milk and allow to sit for at least five minutes. Combine dry ingredients. Fold in the melted vegan butter and flax until mixture thickens and balls up. Add vanilla extract and lemon. Add another splash of almond milk if dough is too dry. Fold in the walnuts and chocolate chips. Place dough in the fridge or freezer to chill until firmed enough to roll into balls.

Arrange dough on baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 12-16 minutes or until the edges begin to brown.

Intermittent Fasting

by Madeline Palaszewski Intermittent fasting – is it the latest fad or a smart way to lose weight and improve overall health? Many studies show that intermittent fasting can produce dramatic effects on the health of your body and brain and may help you live longer. Throughout history, fasting has been a spiritual tradition and a common practice. Intermittent fasting is accomplished by adjusting your daily eating patterns. Typical fast times are between 14 to 18 hours. A

common fasting pattern is to stop eating three hours before you go to bed, skip breakfast, and eat lunch and dinner within a six to eight hour time frame.

The benefits of intermittent fasting include: • Lowers triglyceride levels • Insulin sensitivity improves which is crucial for optimal health • Stabilizes your “hunger hormone” • Levels of Human Growth Hormone increase which helps with fat loss and muscle gain • Reduces inflammation and fights free radical damage The studies emphasize that when you do eat make sure the calories are good quality. So, we see flus, allergies, digestive upset, mental anxiety and so forth. In the changing nature of our time, we need to calm Vata. This is done through trying to keep to a routine; waking up the same time every day and getting to bed similarly. Have

an exercise regimen that guarantees you getting fresh air as often as is possible. Try to eat as regularly as a schedule will allow. If you like raw foods, have them during the middle of the day. Try to eat a cooked breakfast and a warming evening meal. As trees and flowers are blossoming with the unanticipated warm weather, there is more pollen to contend with. And without a cold snap, many bugs that would normally die off in the winter are lingering. The practice of the use of nasal cleaning with a neti pot flush is a sensible practice at least two to three times a week. Such pots can

now be readily found at almost any pharmacy. Lastly, mindfulness is now a common buzzword in our culture.

Thus, meditation is an essential of wellbeing. As Springtime is the time of new beginnings, to embark on a practice of meditation is a great step in keeping our minds open and fresh. And, if you already have such a practice, keep going!

Call a friend and invite them to join you for that walk, the connection and camaraderie will be sure to make you both feel better. 3. Eat more greens, less sugar. Choosing more fresh, green, non-starchy vegetables and eliminating or greatly reducing refined carbs and alcohol from your diet will reduce your cravings for the unhealthy sugar and starch-containing foods that sabotage your best intentions to lost weight and get healthier. Cravings for unhealthy foods are caused by the “bad” bacteria that build up in our intestines from the sugars and starches in the foods we eat. Starve the bad bacteria by avoiding those foods, and the cravings diminish or disappear. Solicit a buddy to join you so you can support each other to stay on track with your nutrition goals and hold each other accountable.

Recipe: 2 1/2 cups almond meal /1 tbsp coconut flour /1/4 tsp sea salt /1/2 tsp baking soda /1 tsp vanilla /1 tsp cinnamon / 2 tbsp honey /1/4 cup melted coconut oil / 2 eggs (or egg substitute) /1 cup fresh organic blueberries. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a 12 count muffin tin. In a mixing bowl, add dry ingredients and stir to combine. Pour in coconut oil, eggs, honey and vanilla; mix well. Fold in blueberries. Pour into muffin tin. Bake for 20-25 minutes.

When researchers analyzed a decade of American Time Use Surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor, they found that Americans spent about eight extra days at home in 2012, compared to 2003, including one day less in travel and one week less in an outside office or other non-home setting. The survey may be a bit dated but the trends have continued. It is however a new trend, and lots of statistics reflect it. Less travel, along with less time in the office, prompted energy savings for the United States in 2012, a figure that represents 1.8 percent of the national total, according to the study. Online shopping made up only a small portion of the stay-at-home analysis and did not take into account the energy involved in producing and shipping products, only the energy used by shops and then energy shoppers used to get to the store. It seems that online shopping is less energy and carbon intensive than driving to the store to get the same product. The practice of spending more time at home cut across all age groups, except among those older than 65, according to the study. But the most striking change occurred among young people ages 18-24. They spent 70 percent more time at home compared to the general population.

Those older than 65 were the only group who spent more time outside the home than they did in 2003, according to the study. Technology may be good for the environment, but it ultimately might be bad for the waistline. And for local businesses? by Mauris L. Emeka Currently, cancer in all its forms is the second leading cause of death in the USA. As long as the focus is only on treating tumor symptoms cancer will continue to grow and support a multi-billion dollar treatment industry.

In 1971 President Nixon declared a war on cancer. Clearly we are losing the war, because cancer is fast taking over heart disease as the number one cause of death in America. The first proven fact is that cancer cells need to consume food in the form of glucose every minute of the day and need glucose to generate energy. These facts were first brought to light by Dr. Otto Warburg, winner of the 1931

Nobel Prize. On the other hand normal cells within our body can go for hours without food and still survive and are not limited to glucose for generating energy. They consume nutrients known as ketones. Boston College Professor Thomas Seyfried, authored the book, Cancer as a Metabolic Disease. Author Ty Bollinger explains the benefits of intermittent fasting and ketone dieting in his book, The Truth About Cancer.

Intermittent consists of avoiding eating roughly 16 out of every 24 hours.

Ketone rich foods include good fats such as unrefined virgin coconut oil, walnuts, Brazil nuts, whole plantbased foods and moderate amounts of high quality proteins which include pasture raised eggs, sardines and wild salmon. Refrain from consuming

Acupuncture is a form of health maintenance, which stimulates the body’s ability to correct and balance itself. Based on the ancient Chinese practice of using "punctures" to cure the body of disease and relieve pain. This process is used to channel the chi life force throughout the body by a network of meridians in a continuous flow.

Disease is considered to be an imbalanced meridian system, and "needles" are inserted at various points along the meridians to stimulate or disperse the life-force flow to correct the imbalance.

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses liquid plant materials, known as essential oils (EOs), and other aromatic compounds from plants for the purpose of affecting a person’s mood or health. Essential oils differ in chemical composition from other herbal products because the distillation process only recovers the lighter phytomolecules. Aromatherapy is a generic term that refers to any of the various traditions that make use of essential oils sometimes in combination with other alternative medical practices and beliefs.
