Here we are. Still suffering under the weight of an unbelievable world crisis. I think I speak for most of us when I say we are struggling with weariness, some depression and maybe even burnout. We can't take a "day off." It's with us 24/7. I get it.

Something invisible is keeping us going. A desire to survive? A sudden awareness of the struggles, and loss of resources of so many, including our beloved Ruth Bader Ginsburg? Maybe a deep desire for racial and economic equality? It all seems a bit overwhelming. A convergence of so many things rolled into one huge stressful package. Yet, we are all carrying it, and it's really tiring. I struggle every day. Staying healthy during this pandemic requires extra thought, and some new unfamiliar routines each day, and it's a challenge.

The problem is, if we don’t take care of ourselves, we won’t have the energy that we need to do great work now. And great work is critical. My hope is that we will connect with that wise voice inside each of us. That little voice that tells us how to feel most alive. We need to be at our absolute best. There is important stuff to do.

Because, to find solutions to these pressing problems, the world needs us to be at our best right now!

Teachable

moment

~ Senator John Lewis We are in a dark moment. But I believe it is also a teachable moment.

Sheltering at home has shed light on the isolation of the infirmed.

Unemployment has us worrying how we will pay the rent or put food on our tables, fears that the poor have always lived with. And the outcry for racial equality has brought thousands to the streets who, until now, may not have considered the plight of the oppressed.

The recent passing of John Lewis brought to mind a poem written 125 years ago, yet so relevant today. Judge Softly is often credited to various Native tribes but was written by a white woman - Mary T. Lathrap, a poet, a preacher, and a suffragist. Here are a couple of passages:

Just walk a mile in his moccasins Before you abuse, criticize and accuse.

If just for one hour, you could find a way To see through his eyes, instead of your own muse.

Remember to walk a mile in his moccasins And remember the lessons of humanity taught to you by your elders.

We will be known forever by the tracks we leave In other people’s lives, our kindnesses and generosity.

Anti-Masks Too! The 1918–1920 flu pandemic came in three major waves. After the first wave in the U.S., the virus subsided, and Americans were restless to have businesses reopened and for social life to resume. There was a growing movement to stop wearing masks, which had become ubiquitous – so much so that The Anti-Mask League of 1919 was formed. These were protests from those who thought the public health ordinance violated their liberty. The virus came back with a vengeance in the fall and was much deadlier than the first wave, eventually killing more than 675,000 Americans and killing around 100 million of the 500 million it infected worldwide before it was over. This was before mass vaccination, before the electron microscope; this is the tragedy of herd immunity and stubborn ignorance. Viruses aren't political; they don't care about your theories or speculations or projections. They're unthinking parasites only wanting to replicate and use your body as a host. Wear a mask.

Unusual Symptoms

According to Kaiser Health News, older adults with COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, have several "atypical" symptoms, complicating efforts to ensure they get timely and appropriate treatment, according to physicians. COVID-19 is typically signaled by three symptoms: a fever, an insistent cough and shortness of breath. But older adults, the age group most at risk of severe complications or death from this condition, may have none of these characteristics. Instead, seniors may seem "off," not acting like themselves early on after being infected by the coronavirus. They may sleep more than usual or stop eating. They may seem unusually apathetic or confused, losing orientation to their surroundings. They may become dizzy and fall. Sometimes, seniors stop speaking or simply collapse. "With a lot of conditions, older adults don't present in a typical way, and we're seeing that with COVID-19 as well," said Dr. Camille Vaughan, section chief of geriatrics and gerontology at Emory University.

A Different Perspective!

by Margaret De Stefano What if we subscribe to the philosophy that life is always working out for us. That there is an intelligence far greater than humans at work.

That all is interconnected. What if the virus is here to help us?

To reset. To remember what is truly important.

Reconnecting with family and community. Reducing travel so the environment, the skies, the air, and our lungs can get a break. Working from home rather than commuting to work. Less pollution. More personal time. An invitation to turn inwards. A deep meditation, rather than the usual extroverted going out to self-soothe. To reconnect with the self. To ask: What is really important to me?

A reset economically. Healthcare access for all.

Washing our hands. How did that become a "new" thing? There is a shift underway in our society. What if this virus is an ally in our evolution? In our remembrance of what it means to be connected, humane, living a simpler life, to be more kind to our environment and neighbors.

Here's another perspective.

Another way of relating to this virus, this unfolding, this evolution. It was time for a change. We all knew that. And, change has arrived.

detox Cabbage Soup Recipe: 1 tbsp coconut oil or ghee (or any healthy fat of choice) / ½ of a small cabbage, sliced thinly (about 4 cups packed) / 3 stalks of celery, chopped / ½ tsp salt / 2 cloves of garlic, minced / ½-1 tsp grated fresh ginger / 2 ½ cups of good quality broth / fresh cilantro for garnish. Melt fat of choice in a soup pot over medium high heat. Add cabbage, celery, and salt. Saute for 3 – 4 minutes, until veggies start to soften, stirring often. Add garlic and ginger and cook for another minute. Add broth and chicken to pot and simmer until veggies are cooked to your liking. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve immediately. Store leftovers in an airtight glass container for up to 2 days. (2–3 servings)

Learning how to make a face mask may not have been at the top of your creative wish list before the pandemic.

But, with masks becoming mandatory in more places, it is a skill many will want to acquire. Though face masks are now more widely available, the disposable kind can end up being quite expensive, plus it's hard to find one that you don't mind wearing, so it makes sense to make one and put your own slant on it. This guide is here to make it easier for you. This is the easiest and quickest way to make a face mask (Image credit: CDC) .You will need: A bandana or scarf / 2 x elastic or rubber bands, or hair ties /A coffee filter, paper towel or kitchen roll (optional)

The easiest method for making your own face mask involves folding a bandana or a scarf. Note that you need to choose the right bandana or scarf.

Hold it up to the light to see how much you can see through it. The less you can see, the better; if the material is too thin then your face mask won't be as effective. Tightly woven, 100 per cent cotton is best. The CDC recommends folding your bandana in half, then folding it again twice – lengthways from both the top and the bottom. Although the worldwide focus is currently on COVID-19 control, the need for sustainability has not gone away. Before the pandemic struck, the media had seen an increase in environmentally conscious programs from businesses, with customers looking for suppliers that were taking the climate change challenge seriously. This pandemic has also shown a spotlight on the ongoing inequalities in society and underlined that certain groups had been the hardest hit by the virus. Many other facts have been uncovered. If you go back to the previous century, businesses viewed sustainability as a "nice to have"– typically an extra bullet point at the end of a business plan. Now however, businesses have determined that it is not only a moral obligation, but a business imperative. If they are to succeed it is necessary to include a well thought out plan to help us live in a more environmentally sustainable world. It's what their customers will look for before making a decision. The time has finally come. It's no longer an option. This pandemic has revealed to us all how vulnerable we are as a species and how much we depend on a healthy environment to survive.

Fall Soups!

Soup is the ultimate comfort food as the autumn months start tugging down the temperatures. It’s also a good way to use up the last heaves of produce from the garden, and yes, I’m lookin’ at you, zucchini.

A good soup starts with good broth, so definitely consider making your own.

A lot of commercial broths are pretty high in sodium, so you can avoid that by whipping up a big batch yourself and adjusting it to your desired salt level. If you’ve got the freezer space to spare, be sure to make extra broth and freeze it in quart containers for soups and stews or in ice cube trays to give your sauces, stir fries, and gravies a little oomph.

Cooler weather calls for hearty soups and stews, but you don’t always need to reach for heavy cream as a thickener.

If you’re making a recipe with potatoes, mash a few of them against the pot

with a spoon and stir them in; keep mashing and stirring until you get to the consistency you want. Same method goes for beans.

Another thickening method is to make a roux – a mixture of roughly equal parts flour and fat such as olive oil, butter, or drippings. Heat the fat over gentle heat in your soup pot, then sprinkle the flour in and start stirring. You’ll want to “cook” the flour enough so that the soup doesn’t taste like raw flour, but pay enough attention so that the flour doesn’t start to burn. (The roux method is also the key to silky gravies and white sauces.)

Part of the beauty of soups and stews is that almost anything goes. Throw open your fridge and pantry and let your imagination start simmering!

Estero Bay Kindness Coalition fights hunger through a backpack program “When COVID-19 struck, we transitioned to home deliveries to meet the needs of the children and families we served prior to the pandemic,” DeLancellotti said. “We currently deliver two bags of groceries and fresh produce to 90 families every week.”

The concept was simple: send backpacks full of donated food home with school children in need, to help bridge the hunger gap over the weekend.

Got Your Back was started in March, 2018 by Bobby DeLancellotti, the founder of Estero Bay Kindness Coalition (EBKC). The program initially served 10 students at Del Mar Elementary School, but grew quickly, and now serves over 200 students at eight elementary schools in the Estero Bay area.

But he admits that EBKC does not have enough resources to fill their latest needs. “There are more hungry people than our organization is able to feed. We’ve outgrown my pick-up truck and are on a mission to obtain a larger vehicle so we can deliver to more families in a timely manner.”

Grandma misses you!

The coronavirus pandemic has totally disrupted the daily lives of all Americans. Additionally, for many of the country's 70 million grandparents, contact with young grandchildren has been cut off. Older Americans have a higher risk of developing complications from COVID-19, and children may be asymptomatic carriers. So intimate relationships have been frozen in time, leaving grandparents longing for a connection they once took for granted.

Grandparents are these enormously important attachment figures. Families worry the separation could weaken the bond between grandparent and grandchild. The bond may be lasting, but childhood is not. Children grow quickly, and an older grandparent may see the clock ticking. Many ask," When am I going to see my grandchildren again?" They miss the closeness.

Technology to the rescue! They can see their grandchildren over Zoom. It's not a perfect substitute, but it helps keep grandchildren engaged. Occasionally, some drive by their children's homes to visit from the driveway. Medical experts see such outdoor encounters as relatively safe. For grandparents who live far from their grandchildren, this time has meant canceling family gatherings. Many now contact their grandmother daily over Messenger Kids, a communications app. The calls can't replace a visit, but everyone can look forward to the calls and connection.

Family

After several months of COVID-19 togetherness, families across the nation are experiencing symptoms of family burnout. The pressures on single parents are especially high. Marriages are also suffering, with inescapable togetherness, highlighting the fractures in relationships. Parents may be dealing with children who are acting out and regressing. Mental health services should be contacted for those who may need additional help. They are feeling physically or emotionally exhausted not being able to handle usual tasks, feeling easily annoyed. These are symptoms a large number of people may be feeling right now, with exhaustion being reported across the internet. Also, despite the fact that people are home and

seemingly have all the time in the world on their hands, this inexplicable fatigue is becoming a common phenomenon.

For single parents in a pandemic, there’s no partner to help share responsibilities and there are few, if any, opportunities to get away and breathe by oneself. The result can easily lead to family burnout. One of the earliest signs of burnout is having less patience.

Meanwhile, months together in quarantine can also be a strain on romantic relationships. A recent Forbes article reported on a survey that found only 18 percent of respondents were happy with the communication within

their relationships since the pandemic began. And in China, an unprecedented number of divorce requests were filed as soon as marriage offices began reopening. Will we see similar numbers as our states continue reopening here in the United States? In times of high stress, it may not always be the best thing to be locked at home together, incapable of getting the space and clear head that’s often needed to work through marital discord. It may help to take some time apart, even if it's just to do grocery shopping or maybe go for a quiet walk. It’s not just parents and adults. Kids can experience family burnout as well. Burnout in children often presents as anxiety, being irritable, poor academic performance, or staying isolated from peers and not expressing interest in playing.

A recent survey in Italy found that children are experiencing psychological impacts as a result of lock-down.

They’re more irritable, having trouble sleeping. Teenagers may be more likely to experience burnout due to higher academic workload, greater need for peer interaction, and more frequent conflicts with parents. For kids, try to switch up their activities. Take them bike riding, to the pool, or to the park.

When burnout symptoms are moderate to severe, consider getting professional consultation through family therapy, or individual therapy, depending on the situation. It's important to remember that you’re not alone. You may decide you need that additional assistance right now as well. The most important thing is that you take care of yourself.

Public Restrooms and the pandemic?

Should you avoid public bathrooms? Can flushing spread the coronavirus? Here's what experts know so far, plus some tips for staying safe in the stall.

1. Go before you go. Avoid coffee and other caffeinated drinks, which can make you urinate more because they are diuretics. Go to the bathroom before you leave your house 2. Wear a mask. Keep it on even in a seemingly empty bathroom, and wear it in the stall. It's also important to make sure the bathroom is well ventilated 3. Spritz the stall before you enter.

Spray the air in a stall, as well as the toilet seat, with a disinfectant that contains ethyl alcohol and dimethyl benzyl ammonium saccharinate ideally, before entering. 4. Prepare to flush and rush. Be prepared to exit as soon as you flush. Don't bother with paper toilet seat covers, either: It's not likely that they offer any additional protection. 5. Double up with hand sanitizer.

Even after you lather up and wash your hands after using the door. Make sure to reapply it if you've touched any high-touch surfaces, such as doorknobs, faucets or wastebaskets, as well.

6. Skip the hand dryer. A 2018 study published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology suggests that hot-air hand dryers could potentially be germ bombs, shooting out loads of viruses and bacteria from bathroom air directly onto your hands. 7. Don't putter around on the potty. Almost 75 percent of Americans admit to using their cell phone while on the toilet. But while you're in a public restroom, just skip it.
