Summer afternoon... to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language. ~ Henry James

Food for Thought...

Food is central to our culture and it plays a huge role in our health and the health of the environment. Our food system is not sustainable. Our current system’s reliance on a fragile, fossil fuel-centered supply chain to fertilize, toxify (with pesticides and herbicides), transport, store, and package food is the least of our concerns. How about the fact that forty per cent of the world's agricultural land is now seriously degraded? Many people believe a fundamental shift must occur in the way we design our life support systems, one of them being our food system. Given that resources are not infinite, and many are quickly running out, it might be wise for us to think about learning to design systems to grow at least some of our own food, within urban areas. We will need help in future design plans for our major cities, however, we can do our part too. One solution? Grow veggies in our own back yard...grow food instead of lawns!

GMOs FEATURES

There are a lot of OMGs to discuss about Genetically Modified Organisms, so let’s take a few common myths off the table.

1. We can prevent Genetically Modified crops from entering our food system.

Nope. Too late. According to the Non GMO Project (www.nongmoproject.org), about 90% of the canola, 88% of the corn and 94% of the soy grown in the U.S. is genetically modified. Unless you’re eating certified organic servings of these foods, you’re eating GMOs, and you might still be getting them via cattle, pork or poultry feed.

2. GMOs are perfectly fine and pose no health risks. Well … maybe we’ll find out that this is

Is barely one generation enough to study and understand the long term effects of GMOs? 3. Labeling GMOs would just be too expensive and cost the consumer too much money. When they thought it would get marketplace traction, companies were quick to slap “trans-fat,” “gluten free,” and even “no GMOs” on their labels, and at no extra cost to the consumer. And if GM products pose no health risk, what’s the problem with labels?

Keeping your cool during the hot months can use a lot of costly energy. Here are some tips for maintaining a comfortable home and a lower energy bill: 1. Plant native deciduous trees on the south and west sides of your home.

Deciduous trees will give you the shade in summer and sun in winter.

2. Install awnings or some other sort of shading over windows and walls exposed to the sun.

3. Think about double glazing for your windows. Even a tint on your windows will help reflect the heat.

4. Make sure your internal blinds and curtains are well-fitted, covering the entire window and fitted as closely as possible. The thicker the material, the better the insulation properties are. Horizontal blinds and shading devices are more effective for north/south facing windows, and vertical blinds are more effective for east and west facing windows.

5. Inspect, clean, or change air filters once a month in your AC. A dirty air filter can lead not only to less efficiency, but can shorten the life of an AC unit.

6. Insulate your attic. A poorly insulated attic or windows that leak can lead to overworking your fans and AC. 22

7. Consider getting a programmable thermostat that will let you set the air conditioner to start half an hour before you get home. This allows you to keep the AC turned off when you don’t need it. Don’t place lamps or TV sets near your air conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances.

8. Whole-house fans help cool your home by pulling cool air through the house and exhausting warm air through the attic. They work best at night, when the outside air is cooler than the air inside.

The sooner you can attribute your pessimism to a unique set of circumstances rather than the state of the world itself, the easier it'll be to change your perspective. 2) Understand that the past does not equal the future: Do not make a bad start turn into a self fulfilling prophecy for a bad ending. 3) See yourself as a cause, not an effect: You don't have to be a product or a victim of your circumstances. Stop thinking about what is happening to you and start thinking about what you can make happen. 4) Use positive affirmations: Write down short statements that remind you of what you're trying to change about the way you see the world. Put them in places where you'll see them every day. Some are: a) "Anything is possible." b) "I always have a choice." c) "I choose to live my positive side of life." 5) Remember that life is short: Pessimism breeds indecision. It's a waste of time, and time is a limited resource that you can't afford to take for granted. 6) Be a balanced optimist: Prepare for the worst but hope for the best. The former makes you sensible, and the latter makes you an optimist.

Walk to places of attraction instead of driving.

Opt for public transport. As you travel, drink a locally brewed beer, or pamper your taste buds with local produce, and cuisine. Avoid throw away water bottles. When hiking, stay on marked trails and maintain a safe distance from animals. Select an eco-friendly sunscreen.

Choose electronic tickets over paper.

Choose to stay at an eco lodge (if possible) which are friendlier to the environment. Check them out online. Pack light. Make sure that you pack items that are reusable and avoid plastic bags. You can opt for reusable sandwich bags and Tupperware containers to pack toiletries.

Well, the easiest thing is to switch on the AC, but here are some tips to make your home cooler before you do: 1) Block direct sunlight. Draw all the blinds and curtains during the day to prevent the heat and light from entering the rooms. Invest in thick, blackout curtains. At night, open the windows to let the heat out. 2) Replace any lighting with fluorescent and LED bulbs. 3) Gas and electric stoves heat up the kitchen, and along with it, the rest of the house. Start using a heat-efficient counter-top oven more often. 4) If you have a table fan, place a bottle of chilled water right in front of it.

The breeze will become instantly cooler. Chill Out: Apart from cooling down your home, here are tips for you to beat the heat: Sip on water and fresh juices. Soak a towel in cold water and apply it on your neck, wrists and face. Stick to loose-fitted, light clothes. Avoid synthetic dress material.

A study presented at the Forum of European Neuroscience conference in Geneva, Switzerland suggests that a good night’s sleep can improve memory. They enlisted 32 volunteers to each learn a new skill, such as following a moving dot on a computer screen using a joy stick. Participants were then divided into two groups: the first was allowed to sleep for eight hours and the second was deprived of sleep or only permitted to take a short nap. To assess the impact of these sleep patterns on the brain, researchers then used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to scan the brain activity of participants as they repeated the tasks that they had learned the previous days. According to the researchers, those who had slept properly the previous night performed better on the skills, a finding that was also reflected in their brain activity.

Specifically, the researchers reported that in those that were not sleep deprived, there was more activity in certain regions of the brain associated with learning and memory. The study suggests that getting a good night’s sleep can help the brain “harden up weak memories which otherwise might fade in time." The study did not determine how much sleep was necessary for optimal memory retention, and also suggested that fluctuations in sleep cycle or structure, such as those created by sleep aids, may also impact memorization. Sleep also gives worn-out muscles the time necessary

to rest and repair and allows time for the release of hormones associated with fat loss. In short, sleep is associated with a better mind, a better mood and a better body, so, make an appointment to get your snooze on and sign up for a long stretch of uninterrupted sleep or, if that’s simply not possible in your house, carve out some time for lazy afternoon nap days.

Global Warming?

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) released an important report called, What We Know. It's an assessment of current climate science "that emphasizes the need to understand and recognize possible high-risk scenarios." Here are some highlights of the report: 1) There is (or should be) little issue about climate change in our modern society. It is happening here and now. 2) On this, a clear majority of climate scientists agree. 3) We are at risk of pushing our climate system toward abrupt, unpredictable, and potentially irreversible changes, with very damaging impacts. 4) Scientists may recognize the build up of Greenhouse Gasses (GhGs), but they also recognize the uncertainty about the long-run results.

And so, AAAS is embarking on a new initiative to expand the public dialogue about the risks of climate change. The AAAS is making a new web site available to help in the knowledge-sharing mission: www.aaas.org. You can do your part. Don’t brush off or ignore the "naysayers" and climate change deniers. Share available scientiďŹ c knowledge with them. If you are an investor in a fossil fuel company, press board and management on what the corporate leadership is doing to address the climate change issues. Ask political candidates where they stand on global warming, or on climate change issues. We are ALL in this together.

Marian Regional Medical Center was founded by Franciscan Sisters who are his followers, so Marian seeks to have “green rootedness” and to be environmentally friendly in their day-to-day life of service.

Here are some of their environmentally friendly programs: 1) Commuter Program that offers employees a cash incentive if they carpool, van pool, walk, or take a bus to work as a means to improve air quality, etc; 2) Franciscan Store which is available once a week for employees and volunteers to acquire for reuse or recycling donated items no longer needed by the

hospital such as boxes, office supplies or equipment; 3) Terracycle Recycle Program where pens, pencils, markers and more can be reprocessed through this program; 4) Eyeglass Recycle Program where one can donate used, unwanted eyeglasses which are sent to the Lions Club, which gives the eyeglasses to people who need them; 5) Green Waste Program whereby landscape waste is saved in a bin and then sent to Engle and Gray for composting. This green waste becomes rich soil which can be used, for example, on agricultural land. Keep in mind that we cannot recycle wasted time, so let's continue to Catch the Eco Spirit by using the 86,400 seconds or 1,440 minutes of each day showing a respect for all of creation.

Dr. Ahhmad Nooristani began the foundation when he saw the need for medical care in San Luis Obispo.
