"Greener" Where do you start? Anywhere you want. Lots of experts will tell you to throw out everything in your cleaning closet that isn't natural, clean your refrigerator of non-organic items and get rid of every piece of plastic you own. Some will even do their best to shame you for not being totally "green." This kind of thinking can overwhelm and discourage many people before they even start. Being "green" doesn't have to be an extreme. But, the simple everyday things like utilizing your recycling can, opting for biodegradable, non-toxic cleaners, choosing glass over plastic when appropriate and requesting environmentally friendly building materials when building or remodeling can make a big impact. With a small shift in thinking, you'd be amazed at the difference we can make. Whatever you do, don't let the idea of being environmentally responsible become daunting. It isn't.

Located in Morro Bay is Pacific Wildlife Care (PWC), an organization greatly responsible for the survival of much of the central coast’s native wildlife. PWC began over 26 years ago when a group of concerned citizens spoke out after the Apex Houston Oil Spill. PWC cares for and rehabilitates injured and orphaned native animals.

Their staff and volunteers work to provide care, transportation, and home rehabilitation centers for the wildlife. When an animal comes into the center, it is given a complete physical exam and treatment plan, as well as proper food and housing. PWC does everything it can to return an animal to its natural environment. In addition to rehabilitating animals, PWC raises public awareness and respect for the wildlife they care for. They give presentations to educate children and adults about the wildlife on the central coast. The PWC believes it takes the entire community to preserve and care for our wildlife. Pacific Wildlife Care is the beneficiary of all attendee donations at the Thursday, March 20th Spring Mixer at Kohana Regenerative Center (see page 52 for details).

So many people believe that the only way to control weeds is with a product like Round Up. But, there are ultragreen ways of keeping down the weeds in your yard. Use these tried and true environmentally safe methods to control weeds over a large area: 1) Remove all weeds by hand or with a weed trimmer; 2) Create layers (at least 3-5 sheets thick) with overlapping edges of newspaper to cover the area; 3) Spray water to hold the

newspapers down as you work (cardboard works well too); 4) Apply a 3-4 inch layer of your favorite mulch (straw, bark, rock, etc.)

It’s that simple! Using these methods will leave you weed free for years. As the material decomposes, add more mulch. As small weeds pop through, pull them by hand or pour boiling water on them. The decomposing mulch will condition your soil and attract more birds and beneficial insects to your yard. What could be better? Happy Gardening!

Gardens for the People

must be neatly maintained year round. The cost of watering is borne by the adjoining hotel properties, and in return, guests of the hotels are invited to enjoy the garden’s peaceful ambiance during daylight hours.

Few things illustrate that concept better than community gardens. A garden in and of itself provides a host of benefits: participants get to reap a bounty of fresh produce, work with their hands, and enjoy the outdoors. A community garden offers even more, including social interaction with other gardeners, opportunities for connection within the neighborhood, and, in addition, green space for the community.

One local success story is the Baywood Community Garden. Located on Third and El Moro, this piece of land covers a scant threequarters of an acre, but provides an idyllic oasis for the entire neighborhood. Use of the property was donated by the owner, a local resident and business person who wanted to give a gift to the community.

Gardeners must maintain their own plots according to a reasonable set of basic rules, such as everything must be organic, no invasive or illegal plants are allowed, and plots 20

Of course, other visitors are also welcome to take in the serene views of the Back Bay, as well as admire the green thumb skills of the gardeners. In fact, many grow more than they can use for themselves and are happy to share the wealth. So, at any given time, this little piece of land is feeding a few dozen local residents. The Baywood Community Garden has indeed become a gift of immeasurable wealth for so many.

Here are ten simple things you can do to cut down on your water consumption today: 1) Never throw water away. If you pour too much out or have some left in your glass, use it. Pour the surplus into your dog’s water dish, water a plant, or add it to your water kettle. 2) Don't leave the tap running. If you are washing your face and you need to get the tap warm, use that initial cooler water to brush your teeth or wash your face.

3) Choose and use your appliances wisely. Use Energy Star appliances whenever possible and always use them at full capacity. Choose economy settings and don't run the dishwasher halffull. 4) Install a low-flow toilet and don't flush it more than necessary.

5) Make sure every tap in your home has an aerator. They restrict water flow. 6) Stop that leaky toilet. Leaks can often be fixed by making minor adjustments. 7) Repair dripping faucets by replacing washers. According to American Water & Energy Savers, a faucet that drips at the rate of one drop per second will waste 2,700 gallons per year. 8) Take shorter showers. At the very least replace your shower head with a low-flow one. These are designed to maintain water pressure while using much less water than the old-fashioned sort. Doing this may reduce your shower water use by 20 to 60 percent. 9) Insulate your water pipes. You won't have to wait as long for hot water as an added bonus. 10) Set up a rain barrel this summer. You can collect rain water from your eaves to water your garden.

Recipe: 2 cups all purpose flour / 3 tbsp corn starch / 2 tbsp baking powder / ½ tsp sea salt / ½ cup coconut oil / 2 egg replacers or 4 tbsp chia seeds, soaked / ¾ cup raw sugar / ¾ cup almond milk / ½ cup fresh lemon juice / zest from 2 lemons. Glaze: Zest from 1 lemon / Juice from 1 lemon / ¼ cup water / ¾ cup raw sugar / 2 tbsp cornstarch / 3 tbsp almond milk / 1 tbsp coconut oil. Preheat oven to 350° and grease and flour a 9 inch square or round cake pan. Combine almond milk and lemon juice in a small bowl. Combine flour, cornstarch, baking powder and salt in a bowl and mix well. Cream together coconut oil

and sugar. Add in flour mixture, almond milk mixture, and lemon zest and mix well. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake at 350°F for about 40 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and let cool. Lemon glaze: In a saucepan combine lemon zest, lemon juice, water, sugar and cornstarch. Place on stove over medium heat and whisk until mixture comes to a boil. Let the mixture boil without stirring for 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in almond milk and coconut oil. Cool to room temperature. Spread glaze once cake and glaze are completely cool.

by The “Green” Franciscan Sister, Janet Corcoran, OSF A gentleman who was born in 1182 and died in 1226 demonstrated a reverence for all of creation. He is known as St. Francis of Assisi. In 1979, he was proclaimed the Patron Saint of Ecology in the Catholic Church because of his inclusiveness and reverence for all of creation.

St. Francis considered everyone and everything as brother and sister to him, and he is often quoted by various philosophies and religions because of his respect for all of creation. St. Francis had "heart-ti-tude" for all. Each day was Mother Earth Day to him.

In the United States, a day is set aside to specifically focus on the respect for all of creation. It is known as Earth Day. It is said that a man named John McConnell came up with the idea for Mother Earth Day. John submitted a proposal to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors that was approved for the inauguration of the first Mother Earth Day. Therefore, Mother Earth Day was held on March 21, 1970 in the city and county of San Francisco.

Senator Gaylord Nelson, is also referred to as the originator of Mother Earth Day. In the spring of 1970 he announced that a nationwide Earth Day would take place on April 22, 1970. In some areas it is observed on other days. However, both men took positive actions to make us more aware of our responsibility to be environmentally friendly in our day-to-day lives.

Let's keep in mind the words of Kermit the Frog, “It ain’t easy being green.” Each day is Mother Earth Day!

Most of the oils listed here as industrially processed are, unfortunately, commonly considered "healthy oils."

Not only are most of them derived from GMOs, but the process used to extract these oils results in rancid and unstable polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Because these oils are so cheap, they are some of the most commonly used oils in packaged foods and in restaurants.

You'll find them in most fried foods, chips, nuts, breads, margarine and butter substitutes. What to avoid on ingredients labels: Canola oil (rapeseed oil), vegetable oil, cottonseed oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil. Alternatives: The healthiest oils for cooking are coconut and olive oil.

So, how can one health-conscious consumer find out if their food contains GMOs? Below are 5 tips on how to avoid GMO foods in the grocery store: 1. Assume all nonorganic corn, soy, cottonseed, and canola ingredients are GMO: In the U.S., these plants are likely all grown using genetically modified seeds. If you need something made with corn or soy, be sure to seek out certified organic products, which according to the certification process, cannot contain GMOs. 2. Stay away from artificial sweeteners: Aspartame is made using GM bacterial strains of E. coli.

3. Beware of Invisible GM Ingredients: Ingredients lists are often difficult to decipher, and some of these foreign-sounding ingredients are derived from genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Some of the more common products include: whey, xanthan gum, glutamate, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, lactic acid, cellulose, citric acid, maltodextrin, and mono and diglycerides.

4. Choose certified organic dairy products: Conventional dairy products are taken from cattle raised with rBGH, a growth hormone likely containing genetically modified components. .

5. Don't trust the produce stickers and PLU codes on fruits and vegetables: There are many myths regarding the small coded stickers on produce. The one you can trust is a 5-digit code starting with a 9— that identifies organic fruits and vegetables and by their classification as certified organic, they are non-GMO. Avoiding genetically modified ingredients in the U.S. takes someone seriously dedicated to keeping themselves and their family as healthy as possible; it also takes a bit of work, though will become easier.

Here’s a hybrid car definition: A hybrid car is a car which can run on two or more fuel sources. It’s as simple as that! Well, almost.

Hybrid cars are far from new. The first hybrid was built over a hundred years ago - the Mixte built by Porsche. The Mixte even won a car rally. It used a gasoline engine to power a generator which ran an electric motor.

Dual-fuel vehicles were not uncommon in the 1930's and 40's. Many buses and other heavy transport vehicles had systems which allowed them to run on petrol or diesel. Most modern hybrids are HEVs - Hybrid Electric Vehicles.

The technology to power the hybrids of today really began in the 1970's. Victor Wouk is usually seen as the “Godfather” of the hybrid car after he developed a hybrid drive-train for a Buick. Since the 1990's hybrid cars have become a viable alternative to standard petrol or diesel cars. Gasoline prices are creeping up and the consensus is they are likely to continue rising. The world’s oil deposits are limited and many experts believe that the amount

Recipe: 2 lbs tomatoes / 3 Persian cucumbers, peeled / ½ jalapeño pepper (without seeds for mild, with for more zing) / 2 cloves of garlic / ¼ red onion peeled / 2-4 tablespoons of red wine vinegar / ¼ cup of cilantro / ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil. Fill a large pot with water and bring to a boil. Fill bowl large enough to hold the tomatoes with ice water. Place tomatoes in boiling water for 30–45 seconds. Plunge tomatoes into ice bath and cool. Coarsely chop the cucumbers,

garlic, your choice of pepper, and onion. When tomatoes are cool. Slide off tomato skins, core and coarsely chop. Keep the cool water in case you need to thin out the soup. Add half of all ingredients to a blender and puree until smooth. If the mixture is too thick add some of the ice water. Strain into clean bowl. Continue this process until all is blended. Add sea salt and pepper according to your taste. Chill.

Check the seasonings and texture. Add more water if needed.

There are a number of ways people who live in apartments can be more environmentally-friendly: 1) Window treatments can play a big role in how energy efficient any space is. Find shades or curtains that are going to preserve the heat in the winter, and keep a space cool in the summer. 2) Don't underestimate the importance of recycling. Recycling can seem like an old-fashioned way to be green, but it’s one of the most effective things an individual can do for the environment. Most apartment complexes offer recycling bins, so take advantage. 3) For an ultra-easy fix, replace incandescent light bulbs, and instead use LED options. 4) Although a renter may not own their appliances, when these devices are well-taken care of, they're more efficient. Only use a dishwasher if it’s totally full, and avoid the heated dry cycle.

Turn off devices when they're not in use. 5) Starting a window garden is a great idea for apartment residents. Acupuncture is a form of health maintenance, which stimulates the body’s ability to correct and balance itself. Based on the ancient Chinese practice of using "punctures" to cure the body of disease and relieve pain. Disease is considered to be an imbalanced meridian system, and "needles" are inserted at various points along the meridians to stimulate or disperse the life-force flow to correct the imbalance.

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses liquid plant materials, known as essential oils (EOs), and other aromatic compounds from plants for the purpose of affecting a person’s mood or health. Essential oils differ in chemical composition from other herbal products because the distillation process only recovers the lighter phytomolecules.
