We all know how the roar of a leaf blower can shatter the tranquility of a morning, but the noise pollution they create (particularly the gas-powered, two-stroke engine models), is only one of their many environmental hazards.

According to the California EPA Air Resources Board: • In one hour, one leaf blower produces as much smog as 17 cars. • One half-hour of one leaf-blower’s use is equivalent to one car driving 440 miles. • Leaf blowers emit large quantities of: carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides and hydrocarbons. • Their 200-mph air output blasts away topsoil, microbial life forms, animal waste, allergic fungi, spores, herbicides, pesticides, and heavy metals such as arsenic, mercury and lead. • The combination of engine emissions and dust particulates can exacerbate allergies and asthma, and aggravate acute pulmonary disorders such as COPD, and pulmonary fibrosis. • About 5 lbs. of particulate matter per leaf blower per hour are swept into the air and can drift for days before settling. • One resident's leaf blower can affect 8 to 14 neighbors.

What you can do: 1. Ask your landscaper to stop using leaf blowers on your property.

2. Talk to neighbors about the hazards of leaf blowers. 3. Make leaf raking fun. Let the kids play in a pile of leaves before sweeping them up.

4. Take advantage of the exercise that raking and sweeping offer. 5. Compost your lawn debris. 6. Enjoy the peace and quiet!

Cal Poly adds campus community Garden

An organic community garden on Cal Poly’s campus offers space for students and staff to grow vegetables as well as provide fresh produce to the Cal Poly Food Pantry, supporting food-insecure students.

Opened in June, the garden occupies a portion of the lawn area nearest the Health Center Building and is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Campus Health and Wellbeing department, along with other departments.

“Health is not merely the absence of disease; it is the cultivation and design of accessible services, supports and resources to ensure our campus 14

community is able to thrive and be well,” aid Genie Kim, Cal Poly’s director of Wellbeing Education.

Any student, staff or faculty member interested in a garden space can apply.

Community gardens are found throughout San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. The gardens help increase food freshness, improve food security and reduce food miles while strengthening communities.

Pumpkin soup Recipe: 2 tablespoons butter (or vegan option) / 2 carrots (8 oz. total), peeled and coarsely chopped / 1 stalk celery (4 oz.), rinsed and coarsely chopped ¾ cup chopped onion / 1 clove garlic peeled and minced / 2 quarts vegetable broth / 4 cups mashed pumpkin / ½ cup apple cider / 1 green apple (8 oz.), peeled, cored, and chopped / 2 teaspoons chopped fresh ginger / 1½ teaspoons dried sage / ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon / ⅛ teaspoon ground allspice / sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste / 1 teaspoon grated lemon peel.

In a 5 to 6 quart pot (over high heat) melt butter, (or vegan option). Add carrots, celery, onion, and garlic; stir often until onion is tender, about 8 minutes. Add broth, mashed pumpkin, apple cider, apple, ginger, sage, cinnamon, and allspice; cover and bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes.

Let’s face it. Everyone is feeling the pinch of today’s economic downtrends. We are all looking for ways to save a little. Here are some ways that can make a difference in getting the most of what you have, some of which may be totally new... take a peek!

1. Shake out excess water off your disposable razor and dip it in rubbing alcohol before storing it in a dry place.

This will add weeks of shaving life.

2. Seal lettuce in a ziplock bag with a moistened paper towel. It will stay fresher for a longer period of time. 3. Scoop out the remaining bit of lipstick from the tube with a lipstick brush. You will get a dozen or more applications. 4. Separate your bananas. They produce ethylene gas, which causes them to ripen.

Separating them will keep them fresh and yellow longer. 5. Use half the amount of toothpaste, soap, shampoo and laundry detergent.

You probably won’t notice the difference. Try it!

6. Use a clothesline

That’s where the lint comes from. Open zippers can also ruin clothes in a dryer. Zip them up. 7. Flip your mattress every 3 months. This will extend its life span. Rotate cushions on sofas too. 8. Rotate bars of soap. Allow each to harden before using it again. They will last longer.

9. Leather shoes are susceptible to moisture and will last longer if you give them a day off.

The Greener Dorm If you help a college student set up a dorm, do it greener. How about unbleached organic cotton bedding and towels, recycled wood or metal picture frames. Don’t forget an energy efficient laptop or tablet. Renting or buying used textbooks and selling them back at the end of the semester is good green habit. Help organize a paper reuse station where they can cut old handouts and other paper in quarters for use in lieu of note cards. Oh, by the way, don’t forget the LED bulbs!

5G... a health risk?

Technological advances may have consequences to our health and the health of the animals we love.

The science is not settled on nonionizing radiation and there are new forms of wireless technology coming out all the time. 5G involves small, often hidden high-powered transmitters in close proximity that take frequency levels up to 93 gigahertz. Pumpkins?

Beyond their use as a festive autumn décor, especially at Halloween, pumpkins are a versatile and nutritious food. Plus, there are a couple things about them that might surprise you!

In cooking, pumpkins can be used in a wide variety of dishes: soups, chilis, and pastas (as a ravioli filling or as a gnocchi ingredient), as well as all manner of baked goods such as cookies, muffins, quick breads, and – of course – mouth-watering pumpkin pie. If you know the benefits of “eating the rainbow,” you won’t be surprised to learn how healthy pumpkins are. As with most “colorful” foods, they have high levels of beta carotene that helps eyesight, high levels of antioxidants that combat cancer, high levels of Vitamins A and C … you get the idea.

Pumpkins are also very beneficial for dogs and cats -- from digestive and urinary health to helping with weight

loss. Just please don’t give Fido or Tabby any sugary pie filling, and especially don’t give them that jacko'-lantern that’s been sitting on your porch for days collecting bacteria!

Do you know these facts about pumpkins? 1. Though thought of as vegetables, pumpkins (and all squash) are actually fruits because they contain seeds (same goes for tomatoes, btw).

2. That pumpkin pie you love so much is probably not what you think it is.

Though you can certainly use the scooped-out flesh of carving pumpkins, it’s usually too stringy, watery and blah in color and taste for good pies. The yeoman task of delivering delicious “pumpkin” pie filling almost always falls to other members of the winter squash family, especially Hubbard and butternut. Alas, they’ll probably never get the credit; somehow “butternut squash pie” just doesn’t quite have me reaching for the whipped cream.

With environmental awareness on the rise, there have been some concerns about the environmental impact of animal waste and pet litter. The following are recommended alternatives.

Could it be possible that walking makes you smarter? Behavior and health experts at the University of Michigan have found that walking outside in parks or in nature help improve attention span and memory performance by about 20 percent.

The researchers who published their findings in Psychological Science, believe the results may also be relevant to people suffering from mental fatigue. The report also suggests that interacting with nature can have similar effects to meditating. Study participants exhibited increased levels of alertness, satisfaction, and mental tranquility after spending just one hour interacting with nature. Stress levels were reported decreased and they felt more in control of their mind. Similar benefits did not result from urban walks.

Climate Change?

We are confronted with bad news every day about how the climate on Earth is changing at an accelerating pace every year, and it's easy to feel helpless in the face of this threat to the survival of all mankind. But giving up on doing anything different and just leaving it up to the politicians and corporations is not going to do anything towards helping survival.

There are little choices that we can all make every day that will help mitigate the effects of global warming: 1) Eat less meat. Raising livestock increases methane emissions and uses up foodstuffs, like grain, that could otherwise be used in feeding people more directly.

2) Avoid cutting down trees and try to plant as many more trees as possible. Trees are the "lungs" of the world. 3) Divest your money from banks that finance oil.

4) Invest in renewable energy sources, like

solar and wind. 5) Advocate for more fuel efficiency in vehicles. 6) Support organic farming. The pesticide and herbicide residues that wash into the ocean are destroying its chemistry, eco-systems, and bio-mass. 7) Recycle. Re-using materials helps prevent the need for more to be made or for them to wind up in a landfill, creating more methane gas. 8) Try to limit your amount of airplane flights, fly on the most fuel-efficient carriers, and offset the effect on the globe by buying carbon credits, which go to finance ways in which climate change can be minimized. 9) Write and talk about climate change and the importance of solving this growing threat, especially on social media, to heighten other people's awareness of the problem.

Lasagna

Recipe: 20 lasagna noodles / 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil / 1 cup chopped fresh mushrooms / 1 cup chopped onion / 3 tablespoon minced garlic / 2 cups fresh spinach / 3 cups ricotta cheese (or vegan option) / 1 teaspoon sea salt / 1 teaspoon dried oregano / 1 teaspoon dried basil leaves / ½ teaspoon ground black pepper / 1 egg / 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (or vegan option) / 3 cups marinara pasta sauce / 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese (or vegan option).

Preheat oven to 350°F. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil.

Add lasagna noodles and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain.

In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook mushrooms, onions, and garlic in 32

olive oil until onions are tender. Drain excess liquid and cool. Boil spinach for 5 minutes. Drain and squeeze out excess liquid. Chop spinach. Combine ricotta cheese, spinach, salt, oregano, basil, pepper, and egg in a bowl. Add cooled mushroom mixture. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed for 1 minute. Lay 5 lasagna noodles in bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.

Spread one third of the cheese/ spinach mixture over noodles. Sprinkle 1 cup mozzarella cheese and ⅓ cup Parmesan cheese on top. Spread 1 cup pasta sauce over cheese. Repeat layering 2 times. Cover dish with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven for 1 hour. Cool 15 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Vegan Cheese sauce

Recipe: 2 red bell peppers, chopped / ⅓ cup lemon juice / 4 tbsp nutritional yeast / 3 tbsp miso (for soy and/or gluten free try chickpea miso) / 1½ cups cashews, soaked 6 hrs (or 20 min in very hot water) / 1 tsp chipotle powder (optional; for southwest, spicy kick / Water (if necessary to thin). Place ingredients in blender in the order they're listed.

Place all ingredients, except water, in blender and blend until creamy. If using a small blender (like a nutribullet) make in 2 batches. Makes about 4 cups. Freezes well for a few months, or refrigerate up to a week. Use as a sauce in macaroni and cheese or as a base in potato-leek soup. Spread a thin layer on top of corn tortillas in a chili-tortilla casserole or mix with tofu in a veggie lasagne. Great coating for kale chips.

Egg protein has the right mix of essential amino acids that we need for tissue-building, and egg protein is said to be the highest quality food protein known, second only to mother’s milk. An egg has 4.5 grams of fat, of which 1.5 grams is saturated fat and 2 grams are mono-unsaturated. An increasing body of scientific research is showing that the real offender in raising blood cholesterol levels is actually saturated fat in food, not cholesterol in food. In fact, the American Heart Association has changed its guidelines on eggs to say that there is no longer a specific recommendation on the number of egg yolks a person may consume in a week. Here are some egg facts: Brown Eggs: Shell color has no bearing on quality, flavor, nutrition value, cooking characteristics or shell thickness. Breeds with white feathers and ear lobes lay white eggs; breeds with red feathers and ear lobes lay brown eggs. Conventional Eggs: Most conventional egg farms use confined, high-density, housing, and most laying hens are caged in houses of 40,000-100,000 birds. Without going into the details of cage space

per bird, let’s just say that if you saw it you wouldn't be buying any conventional eggs. Certified Organic: Organic eggs are laid by hens fed with an all-vegetarian diet that has been grown without pesticides, fungicides, herbicides or commercial fertilizers.

They must be able to engage in natural behaviors such as nesting, perching, and dust bathing, and stocking density and the number of perches and nesting boxes are regulated. Certified Humane comes from a program of Humane Farm Animal Care, and the label requires third-party compliance.

Free Range or Free Roaming: The USDA has guidelines for free-range poultry, but the guidelines are less defined for egg production. Producers labeling eggs as free range or free roaming do not need to demonstrate to the USDA that the hens have been allowed

access to the outside. True free-range eggs are produced by hens raised outdoors or that can go outside daily, typically they live uncaged inside barns or warehouses and can nest and forage. This label does not require third-party certification. Cage-Free: Most conventionally raised laying hens are kept in cages, while cagefree hens are kept, you guessed it, uncaged! (Although usually in barns or warehouses.) They are allowed to perform in natural behaviors however, the label does not guarantee that the bird had access to the outdoors. In addition, this term is not regulated by USDA, and the label does not require third-party certification. VegetarianFed: These birds are given a more natural feed than that received by conventional laying hens, but this label alone says nothing about the animals’ living conditions.

When selecting eggs, opt for organic or free-range if they are available. They have less antibiotic or hormone residue and have a higher omega-3 and vitamin E content.

They are a better nutritional choice, have better flavor and are produced by farmers who generally support the use of renewable resources. And if all that’s not enough, at least consider the happiness of the hen!

Stress is part of life, but if not managed it can result in collateral damage to our bodies. When "stressed," our bodies are inefficient at basic functions such as digestion, sleeping and healing. Chronic stress can lead to anxiety, depression, insomnia, exhaustion, headaches, chronic inflammation… and even cancer.

Stress comes in many forms, chemical, physical and emotional. Emotional stress is chemical and physical. Unresolved emotional stress can be a significant factor in limiting your healing progress. Our bodies can store unresolved emotional stress for years, even decades. The part of our brain dealing with emotions doesn't have a sense of time, so the old saying “time heals all wounds” isn't always accurate.

Mediterranean herbs

“Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme,” goes the Simon and Garfunkel song, Scarborough Fair.

For some of us, this was our first introduction to culinary herbs.

These and other Mediterranean herbs are the basis for much of the cooking in southern Europe. In France particularly in Provence, the basic bouquet garni (garnished bouquet-bundle of herbs) consists of bay leaf, thyme and parsley, but often includes rosemary, peppercorns, tarragon, savory, chervil, and burnet. Traditionally, these herbs are tied in a bunch with string, but they can also be put in a cheesecloth bag. The bundle is used to infuse various stews, soups, stocks and casseroles to add the delicate flavor and aroma of these herbs to the food.

Most of the Mediterranean herbs are very simple to grow.

They need a moderately nutrient dense soil, adequate water and a little fertilizer. They need full sun, but benefit from a bit of covering with our increasing heat waves in the fall. Picking from the full stocks allows the smaller

growth to flourish. All of these herbs pair well with any recipes or simply the vegetable itself baked with alliums: onions, shallots, and garlic. These late summer/fall veggies are summer squash, yellow crooked-necked squash, zucchini, patty pan-tomatoes, peppers of all varieties, eggplants, and cucumbers. The use of these fresh herbs enhance any dish and are found in many recipes around the world although they are rooted in Mediterranean cuisine. So are you going to Scarborough Fair? If you can’t make it; how about growing some these magical herbs in your garden?

Treat your

with castor oil!

A vegetable oil obtained from the seed of the castor plant (ricinus communis), castor oil is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with no odor or taste. Among many uses, it can serve as a naturally healthy treatment for common foot problems. Some are: Dryness: When circulation to one’s feet is compromised, the skin may become dried out. According to the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, castor oil has long been used to soothe and seal foot skin that has become cracked and fissured. Red and itchy: The fatty chains of castor oil are made up almost entirely of ricinoleic acid, which modern medicine recognizes as a powerful anti-inflammatory.

Castor oil has also proved to have analgesic, or pain reducing effects, according to a study published in the Archives of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery. Fungal: An active ingredient in castor oil, undecylenic acid, is widely acknowledged for its relief of fungal infections in the body. For foot or toenail fungus, soak feet in a basin or water and Epsom salts for about 5 minutes, then apply castor oil.

According to a number of studies, evidence suggests that laughter is a true health promoter. It may help reduce stress, boost your heart rate, and increase your circulation. It can even help burn calories!

Reducing stress makes it easier to fall asleep and inadequate sleep can contribute to poor health.

Less stress also helps the immune system stay stronger making your body not as prone to disease and infection. But how can laughter possibly burn calories? When you laugh, muscles throughout your body stretch and your body moves in various ways. Your abdomen and other ares of your body may contract repeatedly.

That burns calories. Make an effort to bring into your life people and situations that create laughter. Why not watch some old funny movies or favorites on YouTube? You may get to chuckle and burn some calories as well!

Quick Fact: Throwing away an aluminum can wastes as much energy as if you filled the can half full of gasoline and poured it on the ground.

Autumn basics 1. If you have a ceiling fan, reverse the direction. The fan should be run in a clockwise direction (stand under the fan and if you feel a breeze, reverse the direction so that air is being drawn upwards). 2. Bring in any houseplants that have spent the summer outdoors. They'll help clean the air. 3. Before packing away those summer clothes, go through them and determine which items to keep, which items to re purpose into something else (cleaning rags, craft projects, etc.) and which to donate. 4. As the autumn leaves begin to fall, consider raking them up rather than using a "blower." Once raked up, use them as mulch to protect plants throughout the winter or add them to a compost pile. 5. Right now, the local farmers' markets are overflowing with delicious, local, and in-season fruits and veggies. Take advantage of this. 6. Cleaning and adjusting your furnace annually will ensure its operating efficiently, cut back on fuel use, and save you money this winter. 7. Don't forget to take some time to appreciate nature and the changing fall colors with a bike ride or walk in the crisp outdoors.

Chili Peppers!

Capsaicin, the stuff that gives chili peppers their kick, may cause weight loss and fight fat buildup by triggering certain beneficial protein changes in the body, according to a study on the topic. The report, which could lead to new treatments for obesity, appeared in ACS’ monthly Journal of Proteome Research. Laboratory studies have hinted that capsaicin may help fight obesity by decreasing calorie intake, shrinking fat tissue, and lowering fat levels in the blood. Nobody knows exactly how capsaicin might trigger such beneficial effects. In an effort to find out, the scientists fed highfat diets with or without capsaicin to lab rats used to study obesity.

The capsaicin-treated rats lost 8 percent of their body weight and showed changes

in levels of at least 20 key proteins found in fat. The altered proteins work to break down fats. These changes provide valuable new molecular insights into the mechanism of the antiobesity effects of capsaicin, scientists say. Now that's really hot news!
