Editor's Note

"A fresh new start, perfectly in harmony with the seasons

I have always looked forward to the Fall of the year, probably because it was a time largely spent outdoors when the whole family goes berry picking and have Sunday boil ups. Fall is a season for fresh starts and growth whether you are back at school or not, a time to begin new adventures. Whether it is a new hike exploring the East coast Trail or learning new self care rituals to learning how to create an NFT the world has so many new exciting things to offer you when you open your mind to new things.

Summer flew by so fast, we had family visit, went on a few weekend getaways to celebrate Come Home Year and enjoyed the warm sunny days.

This Fall signals another first for the Indigena (ISC) brand, a new logo, magazine, products, staff, retailers and the feminine decor at our HQ office. A fresh new start, perfectly in harmony with the seasons. We are embracing our Newfoundland and Labrador culture, celebrating changemakers in the province, sharing our research and development findings and new launches.

On the cover meet Hunter Gamberg Walsh, a Business student at Memorial University who shares her tips for balance and her favourite places on the island.

I am incredibly thankful for all the amazing talent that went into creating this magazine and so proud of the work our team is doing everyday. A special thank you to Saskatoon Polytechnic student design team for creating a great draft we expanded upon. There are so many special people, businesses and places featured here, we hope you enjoy reading about them and hopefully get to meet or experience them this Fall. Most importantly let's be thankful for this beautiful place we call home.

Where is your favorite place to staycation?

My favourite place to staycation would probably be Brigus It’s not too far from St John’s, and it’s so peaceful and relaxing Another great staycation place in Eastport A few of my friends and I booked an Airbnb in Eastport earlier this summer, anditwassobeautiful;Iwouldlovetogoback!

Why did you choose Mun business

When I graduated high school, I was very indecisive about what I wanted to pursue (still am), but I knew I wanted to attend MUN I’ve always wanted to open my own business someday, and I felt like the business program at MUN would givemeagreatstartingpoint!

What is important to you as a soon to be graduate?

It’s really important to me as a soon to be graduate that I enjoy this time in my life. I’m at the age where I find there is a lot of pressure to figure out what my plans for the future are and it can be overwhelming Living in the moment and enjoyingstudentlifewhileitlastsisimportanttome!

Any advice you can share on school, work, friends, family life balance?

Finding a school, work, friends, and family life balance is very tough, but it’s so necessary for me to avoid burnout, and the only way I feel like I have that balance is through the organization So my one piece of advice would be to get a desktop calendar or planner and use it for anything and everything. Writing out your school schedule and things you need to complete for the week, your work schedule, any plans you ’ ve made with friends and family, any important dates, etc , is helpful I find it so much easier to see everything written before me, and it helps me prepare for my week I also think that to achieve that balance; you need to know when to slow down because you always need to make timeforyourselfamongstschool, work, friends, andfamily

Who are some of your favorite local makers?

Well of course my favorite local maker is Indigena! All of the products are amazing and they truly embrace the essence of Newfoundland. My favorite products are definitely the Vitamin C body polish and the Mystical perfume The body polish leaves myarmsandlegsfeelingSOsoftanditsmellssogood.

"My favorite products are definitely the Vitamin C Body Polish and the Mystical

perfume. The body polish leaves my arms and legs feeling SO soft and it smells so good!"

Clay Works and Tidal Stone Jewelry are two local handmade jewelry businesses that have adorable products that I love as well I’m also gonna mention one of my favorite local restaurants because I’m such a foodie. The Madrock Cafe in Bay Roberts is one of my favorite places to get breakfast and the little restaurant is so sweet. If you go there you need to try their toutons, they are to die for!

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

I’m originally from a small town in rural Newfoundland of only 350 people I grew up being so intrigued with fashion, cosmetics, skincare and knew I wanted to have a a career in something that is related to that. I became a runway model which transitioned into becoming one of the first social media influencers in Newfoundland, which lead me to some incredible opportunities like speaking at international events, movie premiers, red carpets, things that I never expected to happen to me. Brand deals lead me to travel and meet some fantastic people, and find the perfect skincare routine for me

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT LIVING IN NL?

Newfoundland is known for its kindness, and its beautiful scenery. I love to visit these small, ethereal communities across our province and connect with the local people Each town has its own story and hearing about these stories and how these towns and businesses came to be is very inspiring to listen to

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE staycation place in NL, fav hobby or relaxation activity?

My favourite Staycation has to be “The Parks Doorsteps ” in Bellevue Beach were my husband and I were married Its a beautiful 3 bedroom property located in a wooded area, across from a beautiful lake. Just up the street is access to the beach front and the owner of the property is so kind and accommodating It has become more of a second home to us, and the small touches of fresh homemade bread and locally made wine awaiting our arrival is always so lovely The smell of the ocean in the morning is nostalgic to wake up to, and at night walking the trails and smelling the wood smoke from the houses nearby really make me appreciate these small things

IN THESE TIMES, WE ALL NEED MENTORING AND POSITIVITY. WHAT MOTIVATES AND DRIVES YOU TO BE BETTER? WHAT IS YOUR SOCIAL PURPOSE?

Community is a big motivator for me I love seeing people come together during such difficult times, and with Snowmaggendon and then the Covid 19 lockdown caused so much stress and negativity in people's lives, I saw people come together during this and really support one another, and that inspires me Kindness is free, you can use as much as you want, and it isn't going to hurt anyone. We are all are equal, and all deserve to be treated with respect, and that's what I try to put out into the world

WE KNOW YOU ARE ALWAYS UP TO SOMETHING

exciting! What are you working on now?

I can’t disclose too much information, but I am working with a national, award winning organization to promote awareness of mental health I am also in the process of working with brand deals to help educate social media users on what brands are best for them

WHAT IS YOUR FAV INDIGENA PRODUCT, WHY IS THAT?

I suffer from having dry lips, all year round, and I have invested so much money into finding the right product to help nourish and revitalize them only to have a lip balm grave in my cosmetic table

Indigena’s scrub and lip balms have really helped me get my lips back to feeling normal. The scrubs have to be one of the best I have

ever tried, and after connecting with my audience on socials, I have come to find that a lot of people would agree with me on this. The Lip balms always feel so nice on the lips Never greasy, never too heavy, just the right amount of product I also feel so comfortable applying this to my lips since Indigena products are all natural

KINDNESS IS FREE, YOU CAN USE IT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT, AND IT ISN'T GOING TO HURT ANYONE." STEPHEN HOOPER

S a m a n t h a P i c c o

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

My name is Samantha Picco; I am 33 years old and I am from St Johns, Newfoundland, and I’m an Entrepreneur I also host a show on Rogers Television, I’ve been on Big Brother Canada and I’ve recently launched my own beauty brand.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT LIVING IN NL?

I would have to say, probably the sense of community I mean, it can get a little bit, like everyone knows each other's business, but having that support of a community is probably my favourite thing

IN THESE TIMES, WE ALL NEED MENTORING AND POSITIVITY. WHAT MOTIVATES AND DRIVES YOU TO BE BETTER?

My own sense of wanting more out of my life really drives me I want my life to be a certain way, and I know that I’m the one that has to do that. I’m definitely motivated by other people that are doing amazing things That's a tricky question because when you ’ re an entrepreneur there's no other way, so it’s just kind of in me and I’m motivated by my instincts and just desiring a really good life.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE INDIGENA PRODUCT, WHY IS THAT?

Where is your favourite staycation place in NL, fav hobby or relaxation activity?

Ok, so my favourite staycation place. I try to go somewhere different, at least try to, every summer. I Love Bonavista, Trinity, and Brigus for the blueberry festival

So, there’s so much to experience, especially in the summertime. A boat tour is fantastic (seeing the whales!), almost being a tourist in your own province, so I love doing that A relaxation activity, I love going to the gym, I like to read, I spend a lot of time on social media, meditation, baths etc. Those are

some of things I like to do to relax

WE KNOW YOU ARE ALWAYS UP TO SOMETHING EXCITING! WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW?

So, as I mentioned earlier, I’m an entrepreneur I recently sold my business, I have had a salon for the last seven years, and I decided to get rid of it and start a beauty brand. I still tattoo eyebrows, but I am working on building my brand, where I’m putting a lot of my effort these days.

I love so many of the Indigena products, I’d have to say the Vitamin C Exfoliating Face Wash I love that, it’s super light, fresh and it has everything you want in a cleanser I also love the Aurora Magic Facial Bar, love that. The Body Scrub, the Lip Scrub, the Lip Glosses. I even love hand sanitizer, it’s literally my favourite one, so I like most things, almost all of them (giggles)

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?

A lesson I’ve learned over the last couple of years is to not be so hard on yourself Trust your gut, I think everyone has had some time to think about what is important and just don’t give up; keep moving.

"A LESSON THAT I’VE LEARNED OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS IS TO NOT BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF"

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.

I AM A 23 YEAR OLD BUSINESS STUDENT WITH A FOCUS IN MARKETING, WHO LOVES KITTY CATS (A LITTLE BIT OBSESSED IS THE RIGHT WORD), GOING TO THE GYM AND TRAVELLING!

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?

Even though the world may seem chaotic right now (and the past few years), there is still so much positive things happening weddings, births, someone landing their dream job, getting accepted for a house, etc.We need to focus on all the good things happening and be the best we can.

What do you enjoy most about living in NL?

Where is your favourite staycation place in NL, fav hobby or relaxation activity? I love that we are right next to the ocean The ocean brings me so much peace and relaxation The ocean is known for grounding, calming & healing properties I love the salty air, the wind (sometimes) and all our beautiful hiking trails Our culture is so rich and vibrant here My favourite staycation place here in NL would be in Eastport (about 3 hours away from St John’s) My Dad & Stepmom live there so I love going there for a little getaway and going to the beautiful sandy beaches!

WE KNOW YOU ARE ALWAYS UP TO SOMETHING EXCITING! WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW?

A little bit of everything! I am trying to finish up my business degree, get abs (hopeful lol), work on my strength in the gym, as well as working part time with local companies I love working in fast paced environments

"YOUR MINDSET DETERMINES YOUR LIFE!"

IN THESE TIMES WE ALL NEED MENTORING AND POSITIVITY.WHAT MOTIVATES AND DRIVES YOU TO BE BETTER? WHAT IS YOUR SOCIAL PURPOSE?

My motivation and drive to be a better person is that life is so short This one life is all we get (from what we know). Be kind because you never know what people are going through, and almost everyone is going through something. So just be a kind person, and karma is important The kinder you are to yourself, the better your life becomes If you think positive, then your life becomes positive Your mindset determines your life!

Partridgeberry Tart

Aunt Dot makes the best Partridgeberry Tart on the planet Pictured below is her tart she made in the summer of 2015. Her secret?? She always uses baking pastry flour and bakes it on a china plate. The pastry is thin and the jam is about 1/4 1/2 inch thick It is amazing! Here is my recipe trying to replicate my Aunt Dot's.

INGREDIENTS:

2 ½ cups (325 grams) baking flour

1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt

1 tablespoon sugar, 1 cup very cold salted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes (2 sticks) 4 to 8 tablespoons ice water

4 cups partridgeberries sugar or maple syrup to taste

DIRECTIONS:

Mix dry ingredients together. Cut the butter into flour until the butter and flour are crumbly and have pieces of butter the size of peas. Then, we add just enough water to form the dough into a ball Roll out strips of pastry for top of pie and a large piece for base of pie. Put base pice on a greased and floured plate , puncture pastry with fork all over then spread partridgeberry filling, top with rolled out pastry strips, pinch pie edges together, pop in pre heated 3:35 F for 25 minutes or until golden

THE BLUEBERRY BLISS BODY TREATMENT IS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE MONASTERY SPA AND INDIGENA, A LOCAL SKINCARE COMPANY. It was created by aesthetician, Denise, who has been in the business for over 12 years along with Monastery Spa Manager, Mandie. This treatment is completed entirely with Indigena Skincare Products, some of which are exclusives to the Spa. When I first entered the Spa I was greeted by Denise, who took my coat and led me upstairs to the change room Once upstairs I was offered a robe to change into and a locker for my belongings After slipping into the robe I made my way to the Vichy Shower room, where my treatment was to take place This room features a gentle warming rain bar, which has 6 shower heads Of course, Denisehadmefilloutaformtoinformthestaffofany

Sadly, all things come to an end and after 10 minutes or so, it was time to wash the mask off, Denise lightly messaged off the product with the help of another shower head.

To end the treatment and leave my skin with a little bit more moisture I was spritzed with Indigena’s Toner Mist Overall this treatment left my skin feeling silky smooth, hydrated and left me feeling relaxed and stress free! I would recommend to anyone looking for a calming experience. But next time, I’m leaving the cameraman at home lol.

WHY OUR EXTRACT BLENDS ARE THE SOLUTION TO IMPROVING AGING AND FIGHTING ACNE.

Did you know?

Much of our research and development of our products was done in Labrador at Battle Harbour Historic Trust?

Featured: leatherleaf partridgeberry virginia rose

When I started on my journey to develop antioxidant rich skincare from indigenous botanicals to the province I had a dream to create something better, something made here, something healthy and special, made with proven research and with the utmost care. I enlisted the expertise of National Research Council, worked with Memorial University Business, Biology, Botanical Garden and several scientists and professionals who assisted with their knowledge and advice from the province... but without the enthusiasm of Dr. Hilary Rodriguez, I may well would not have started on this journey at all. His passion for natural products was a catalyst at the very beginning to keep me investigating new natural ways to formulate. Through many research projects we found amazing results, Partridgeberry releases more antioxidants as it simmers and becomes an extract or jam, either usage will improve our health. How exciting is that?! So we worked extensively on learning about 37 botanicals that grow here on the island and in Labrador. The results of this research was astoundingly positive. Through a Research and Development Corp Proof of Concept we successfully developed 5 extract blends with exponential benefits to improve anti aging, acne and sensitive skin. Head over to our blog to learn more about our botanical blends

Tips to apply Moisturizer like a pro

1. Apply on damp skin

All moisturizer should be applied while your skin is damp. That means you should make moisturizing a priority within a few minutes of getting out of the shower or washing your face If you use a serum, apply that first and then follow up with the moisturizer before your skin is completely dry. This will seal the moisture into your skin and is more effective than attempting to rehydrate your skin with moisturizer after it has already dried completely Your product will last a lot longer and your skin will look more radiant. Effectively you use a lot less product following this method of application

2. Dab it on your face first before massaging in with your fingers.

Most people tend to rub moisturizer in the palms of their hands before applying, meaning that much of your face product is absorbing into your hands first! Instead, pump a little to the back of your hand like estheticians do, then take your ring finger and dab it all over your face before gently massaging it in Your ring finger gives a more gentle application

3. Don’t use too much.

Use 1/2 to 1 pump of our Aurora Magical Moisturizer, it is aloe and botanical water based so a tiny amount is enough for your whole face, neck and chest Applying too much moisturizer results in: 1 Wasted product and 2 a Shiny t zone. The product won’t fully absorb into your skin, and anything you apply afterwards will not look right on the skin It will look too oily or streaky. Our product is more concentrated than almost all other products on the market. It does not have any fillers so using 1/4 of what you would use for a water based product will work perfectly

4. Don’t forget your oil serum.

5. Apply to your neck and décolleté

Keep these areas moisturized Unlike your face, your neck doesn’t have many oil glands and your chest skin is much more fragile than the face or neck which means it will age much faster than the face or neck Twice daily moisturizing will hydrate and help to reduce the appearance of fine lines The bonus is your skin will look more even with consistent daily care.
