SETTING UP YOUR SPRAYERS’ DRIVELINE IT IS ESSENTIAL THIS IS DONE PROPERLY OR DAMAGE WILL OCCUR THAT IS NOT COVERED BY ANY WARRANTY

P.T.O. Shaft Hook Up When setting up the driveline on your new MAJOR sprayer it is important to check the following steps to insure proper set up. 1. Before hooking the sprayer to the tractor, grease P.T.O. shafts and all other grease points. 2. Connect the sprayer to the tractor by either a bolt or a link pin that fits the clevis hitch of the sprayer therefore making the sprayer secure to the tractor. Your sprayer is equipped with a safety chain holder that allows the sprayer to be chained to the tractor for added safety. 3. With the tractor hooked up to the sprayer, connect the P.T.O. shaft to the tractor and measure from the U-Joint cross to the draw bar pin and the pin to the cross on the tractor, as illustrated below. It is important to assure that the distance is equal to avoid possible driveline damage during operation. 4. If the distance is not equal, the sprayer hitch may be extended or the tractor hitch may be adjusted or both in a combination that equalizes that distance from the yoke on the sprayer to the pin and from the pin (which attaches sprayer to the tractor) to the tractor. 5. In order to assure smooth operation during the turn, it is important to have the drive train as level as possible, 4 degrees of elevation is the ideal. 6. You may have to adjust the axles on the unit to achieve this. To do so jack up the units and remove the tires. By loosening one bolt on the flex ride axle; you have infinite height adjustment available to allow you to set up your sprayer so that the driveline is in a level position. 7. After you have made all of the required adjustments it is a good idea to drive the unit without the P.T.O. engaged and test to see if there is enough movement in the shaft during operation. Following these few simple steps will help insure many years of trouble free operation.

Your new Major Sprayer will be built as either a 3 point Hitch or a trailer model in one of the three configurations listed below 1.

FAN AND TURBINE – AIRBLAST OPTION

You will have purchased one of two turbine sizes, either a 19-inch or 24-inch turbine. Both are designed the same, the 19 inch turbine will require, with the pump a minimum of 25 PTO horsepower, while the larger 24 inch turbine will require, including the pump, 35 PTO horsepower to operate efficiently in high gear.

The fan is a cast aluminum balanced fan. It is attached to the shaft by a tapered lock bushing. One fixed bearing inside the turbine housing supports the shaft. To remove the fan bearing or gearbox the fan must be removed first. The bearing has a tapered bushing locking the bearing to the shaft; a qualified repair shop with the proper technical experience should conduct this maintenance. If you notice excess vibration in your sprayer we suggest you arrange inspection of the machine by such qualified repair technicians. Feel free to contact the factory at 1-800495-6145 for recommended repair technicians in your area. AIR OUTLETS AND SPRAY BOOMS –Utilized with the airblast turbine Air outlets control the air patterns on the sprayer. The shape of these openings is designed to give uniformity of air speed and volume of air. The only maintenance required is to keep them clean. If for some reason they become bent, they may be straightened. If the machine is operated with the air outlets dirty or bent there will not be a uniformity of air volume developed thus resulting in poor pest control. The spray booms are made of stainless steel with brass nozzles and caps. After EVERY SPRAY the booms should be cleaned with water. This will ensure a uniform flow of liquid to the nozzles. The Tee Jet stainless steel nozzles should be checked for proper size EACH SPRING before starting up, as the spray material will wear the openings. During operation any increase in size will cause an increase in output which will increase your cost of chemicals SPECIAL NOTE Included in this manual is complete information for calibration of your sprayer. Make sure your sprayer is properly calibrated by periodically checking its output. Use only clean water in the sprayer to ensure maximum life from the pump, relief valves, and nozzles. Please obtain a Spraying Systems Teejet book that has a chart showing the output per nozzle for each combination disc and core available. This is available from your dealer or the factory.

2.

AIR SHEAR SYSTEM OPTION IDEAL FOR WINE GRAPE PLANTINGS

If your machine looks like the above picture it is equipped from the factory with the airshear distribution system, which utilizes a centrifugal type fan generating a 260 mph wind speed at the exit of the four fingered airshear heads. Each individual airshear head has its own dial a rate controller. This airshear system has a different calibration system from the TEEJET equipped airblast system. AIR SHEAR CONCEPT The air shear fingers create small water droplets (as small as 50 microns), which allow the air from the sprayer to carry the tiny droplets in suspension form to the target (leaf). These fog size (50 microns) droplets adhere to the plant surface and deposit the chemical on the foliage in a small volume, which assists to prevent waste. The direction of the air shear heads are fully adjustable as well, this allows you to target your plant growth structure versus 180-degree coverage of most airblast. The Major airblast however utilizes adjustable rear outlets discussed above, which allow the operator to target the plant more than the average airblast competitor. This technology is very effective in grapes or crops where the target is very close to the machine as in grapes, however any wind will create problems with drift due to small water droplet sizes it produces. WE RECOMMEND USE IN GRAPE PLANTINGS ONLY.

3.

TRAILER MODEL WEED SPRAYER OPTION

You may have purchased your Major as a weed sprayer, the addition of a breakaway weed boom to this unit will provide you with a high quality inexpensive trailer model weed sprayer for use in your orchard or vineyard. If you purchase either option 149 or Option 156, one of two airblast options or Option #203 the airshear option you can convert your unit from the weed sprayer to either a airblast unit or an airshear unit. This could be done at a later date. This unit utilizes all the same components as the airblast and airshear units including the same frame, wheels, flex ride axle system and Udor Kappa 100 pump as well as the same Morse cable controls.

COMPONENTS OF THE SPRAYER Maintenance recommendations TANK AND AGITATOR The tank in this sprayer is made of Type 304 stainless steel. The tank should be cleaned each time the machine is used. This can be done by putting 20 gallons of water in the tank and connecting a short spray hose to the gun outlet. The tractor running at idle, engage the PTO and turn off and on the gun tap to flush out any remaining material in the system. Wash down the outside and inside of the sprayer; be sure to include the turbine and outlets or airshear system. This prevents a build up of material, which could affect the performance of the machine. If a build up does occur inside the tank, put in 20 gallons of water, mix in 2 gallons of vinegar, using a spray gun clean the inside of the tank Inside the tank is the agitator shaft, which is driven from the rear of the machine by a chain from the drive shaft. The tension of the chain should be checked on a daily basis. The chain should be loosened to have ½” deflection. The packing gland assembly supports the shaft at the front of the tank by a nylon bearing and at the rear of the tank. The packing gland should be greased daily when in use. If a leak occurs in the rear of the tank tightening the bolts on the packing gland by ½ a turn each can stop the leak. Tighten as necessary Frame: Axles:

FRAME AND FLEX RIDE AXLE SYSTEM 5” x 2” channel frame with frame mounted pipe jack for ease of hookup. Our 3500 Lb smooth riding adjustable height axles system provides superior ride over uneven ground and utilizes the flex ride axle system. This system allows the operator to position the wheels for improved weight distribution or handling characteristics.

POWER TAKEOFF SHAFT The universal joint and the male/ female shafts should be greased DAILY. The draw bar should be EQUAL DISTANCE from the front and back of the PTO when the sprayer is hooked up to the tractor. A near level PTO shaft will reduce vibration when turning MAIN DRIVE SHAFT This is the shaft what runs through the tank to the back of the machine and is coupled to the idler shaft on the front and the pump at the rear. A bolt fastens the yoke at the front. This bolt should be checked for tightness periodically. The U-Joints should be greased once a day (8 hrs). The bearings annually. The shaft can be removed from the machine by taking the yoke bolt out and removing the two pillow block bearings on the front of the machine. The shaft can than be pulled through the tank. Your major sprayer will have one of the two air supply concepts to deliver the chemical ladened water to the target, either an airblast turbine or an airshear centrifugal package.

MAJOR STANDARD PUMP The UDOR pump is a semi-hydraulic diaphragm pump with all moving parts immersed in oil. The spray liquid is kept separate from the crankcase by a diaphragm. This allows abrasive materials and running of the pump dry, without damage to the internal parts. All parts in contact with the liquids being pumped are corrosive resistant materials. The pump is the heart of the sprayer. It demands DAILY INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE. Oil levels should be checked daily. The correct oil level is when oil bowl is half full. INSTRUCTIONS FOR OPERATION Before starting up, check the oil level. If oil is required SAE10/30 or 10/40 GOOD QUALITY motor oil can be added. Leave an air space in the filler chamber (oil bowl) as the oil will expand during operation and without this air space there will be a build up of pressure thus resulting in loss of oil. NEVER operate the pump without a suction filter as large objects may be sucked into the pump, which will cause major damage to the pump casing, and this will void any warrantee. Always use the pump with a pressure regulator. DO NOT run the pump any higher than the recommended maximum pressure for the pump on your sprayer. The recommended maximum pressure for the MAJOR Kappa 100 is 560 lbs/sq./in. Storing the pump when not in use. ALWAYS run clean water through pump when you are finished using it. In freezing weather the pump must be dry and filled with good quality automotive antifreeze. THE HYDRAULIC (water) SYSTEM The hydraulic system starts in the tank at the bottom. From the stainless steel line in the tank thru the rear tank head to a gate valve and suction strainer, which should be checked and cleaned DAILY. The gate valve should be opened all the way to ensure a maximum fluid flow to the pump. From the intake side, the liquid is taken through the pump to the pressure side and it passes through the regulator, which is attached to the pump. The liquid is now operating at the desired pressure and it now goes by a pressure hose to the booms. GEARBOX Use 80/140 Gear oil. Always check the oil by checking the gearbox. Low gear is when the top of the handle is towards the turbine. The gear chosen, low or high will be dependent upon the air required. The unit has a neutral position to allow you to use a spray gun attachment without using the fan. Do not reply on the sight glass in order to properly check the gearbox oil level. The sprayer should be sitting on level ground, the oil level should be even with the bottom of the plug threads on the site glass which is best checked by removing the site glass. PUMP OVERHAUL The pump valves and springs may be checked once a year for wear and broken springs. This is achieved by removing the heads and diaphragms on the pump and should be done by someone that is mechanically inclined. To remove the diaphragms, remove the cylinder heads and the bolt holding the diaphragm in place. When the diaphragms have been removed for inspection or replacement it is recommended that the oil be replaced. It is recommended that a qualified technician carry out any disassembly or inspection of the pump. After a pump is assembled, trapped air between the diaphragms and pistons should be removed by slowly turning the pump output shaft and when you are satisfied that all the air is removed, be sure to top the oil up to a half way up the oil fill reservoir

WINTERIZING YOUR SPRAYER DRAINING DURING FREEZING WEATHER

WITH THE SPRAYER HOOKED TO THE TRACTOR NOT RUNNING 1. 2. 3. 4.

Remove the suction filter. Open control valves Open all gun taps Start the tractor and run the sprayer at idle. When the water stops running out of the drain cocks speed the tractor up to operating speed and run until all water stops. 5. Undo all hoses and drain, ensuring that the lines to the booms are drained. ALTERNATE COLD WEATHER PROTECTION Put two gallons of car type antifreeze in the machine and run until the antifreeze runs out of the booms.

NOTICE ATTENTION GROWERS USING CALCIUM CHLORIDE FOR SPRAYING APPLICATIONS. IF YOUR SPRAYER IS NOT PROTECTED FROM THE CHEMICAL IT WILL AFFECT THE PAINT AS WELL AS THE STAINLESS STEEL SURFACES. THE FOLLOWING A IS RECOMMENDATION TO PROTECT YOUR SPRAYER FROM CALCIUM CHLORIDE CORROSION. THIS PROCEDURE SHOULD BE APPLIED AS PER YOUR STATE OSHA REGULATIONS. FIRST, COAT YOUR SPRAYER & TRACTOR WITH A LIGHT COAT OF EP2 CHASSIS GREASE OR USED MOTOR OIL. THIS WILL REDUCE CORROSION OF THE EXTERIOR COMPONENTS OF THE SPRAYER & TRACTOR. WHEN COMPLETION OF THE CALCIUM CHLORIDE APPLICATIONS HAS BEEN FINISHED. THE EQUIPMENT CAN BE CLEANED WITH SOLVENT OR A PRESSURE WASHER. WE RECOMMEND AFTER EACH SPRAY PROGRAM OF CALCIUM CHLORIDE IS FINISHED, THE INSIDE & OUTSIDE OF THE TANK BE WASHED WITH A 50% SOLUTION OF WATER AND VINEGAR. THEN:

OPEN THE BOOM CONTROL TO ALLOW THE MIXTURE TO FLUSH THE BOOMS AND NOZZLES. THE USING A HAND GUN WASHES THE OUTSIDE OF THE SPRAYER AND TRACTOR. TO DRAIN THE SPRAYER TANK, REMOVE THE DRAIN CAP AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TANK, THEN REMOVE THE SUCTION STRAINERS, OPEN THE GUN TAPS PETCOCKS ON THE BOOMS AND RUN THE MACHINE WITH ALL THE VALVES AND TAPS OPEN. IT IS RECOMMENDED YOU DRIVE THE TRACTOR AROUND DURING THIS OPERATION, AS IT WILL SHAKE OUT ANY TRAPPED POCKETS OF RESIDUAL FLUIDS IN THE PLUMBING. OR IF YOU HAVE AN AIR COMPRESSOR AVAILABLE, CONNECT IT TO THE GUN TAP AND OPEN ALL VALVES. THIS WILL BLOW THE RESIDUAL FLUID OUT OF THE SYSTEM. YOU WILL STILL HAVE TO RUN THE MACHINE TO DRAIN THE PUMP. REMOVE SUCTION FILTER AND DRAIN THE SYSTEM. THE BUYER ASSUMES ALL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SAFE AND PROPER HANDLING OF ALL HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS. ALL PROCEDURES SHOULD BE PERFORMED IN SUCH A MANNER AS NOT TO VIOLATE ANY STATE, PROVINCIAL, FEDERAL, WCB OR OSHA REQUIREMENTS DESIGNED TO PROTECT PERSONS, WILDLIFE, SOIL AND WATER CONTAMINATION. READ AND COMPLY WITH ALL LABEL INSTRUCTIONS WHEN HANDLING CHEMICALS. WEAR APPROPRIATE CLOTHING, EYE AND RESPIRATORY PROTECTION. DO NOT CONTAMINATE SOIL OR WATER WHEN DISPOSING OF EQUIPMENT WASH FLUIDS.

CALIBRATION Air-blast sprayers use high-speed, fan driven air-stream to disperse spray from nozzle through the foliage. The introduction of varying sizes of fruit trees has caused some growers to be faced with multiple calibrations in a single orchard or vineyard. The procedures described in the following pages have long been the standard method of calibration to ensure pesticide or organic chemicals are applied at the recommended amounts per acre or hectare. Whether you use traditional spray methods or adopt Tree row volume techniques, these calibration procedures will continue to ensure that you are actually applying the amount of pesticide intended. If you need further advice about set-up, nozzle selection or calibration, or for further information on Tree Row Volume spraying, contact your District Horticulturist or local field rep. SET-UP Basic activities involved in setting up an air-blast sprayer for proper calibration and sprayer operation are: 1) Inspecting the equipment.

6) Calculating required output per side

2) Adjusting the airstreams. .

7) Selecting a set of nozzles.

3) Adjusting spray pressure

8) Measure Delivery Rates

4) Selecting spray volume.

9) Adjusting Output

5) Measure forward speed Each of these is described in more detail below. All of them should be done when setting up a new sprayer or adapting a sprayer to different sizes of tree or vines. 1. Inspecting the Equipment Inspection before start-up -check that: -Tire pressure of both the tractor and sprayer are correct. -All hoses are in good condition and of the proper rating. -All filters, strainers, and screens are clean and in place. -Nozzles are clean and are the intended type and size. Inspection with sprayer operating: Fill the tank about half full of clean water. Start the pump and set the tractor engine speed to obtain the rpm recommended for the pump (Usually 540 rpm). Open the valve to the manifold to fill the lines and begin spraying. Once all nozzles are spraying, adjust the pressure regulator to the operating pressure recommended for your pump and spraying operation (using the lowest pressure recommended will extend pump life and reduce the amount of small droplets that may drift).

With the sprayer running: -Test pressure gauges for accuracy by installing a second gauge at the boom and comparing the pressure. -Check that the agitation system is working properly. -Make sure there are no leaks in the pressure system. 2. Adjusting the Air-stream The air-stream created by the sprayer fan carries the spray mixture into the trees or vines and distributes it throughout the foliage. To reach all leaf surfaces and obtain complete pesticide coverage, all of the air around the foliage must be replaced by the spray-laden air-stream. Both the speed of the air and the volume of the air from the outlet are important. Speed of Air-stream -For sprayer with cone nozzles the minimum air speed at the fan outlet should be at least 100 mph (160 km/h) MAJOR AIRSPEEDS 19’ TURBINE 110 - 130 MPH 24" TURBINE 110 -130 MPH Volume of Air-stream - Large trees require a greater volume of air than small ones. Air-stream volume is determined by the size of the fan-housing opening and by air speed. Air volume can be varied by simply increasing or decreasing the PTO rpm, but remember the Air speed rule mentioned above. Air-stream Direction -More important than air speed and volume to coverage is air direction or angle of attack to the foliage. The foliage must be hit by air at an angle to cause the leaf to rotate and allow the spray-laden air to enter the center of the spray target. Your Turbo-mist has adjustable outlets to maximize this benefit of angle of air attack. 3. Adjusting Spray Pressure The spray pressure affects both the volume of spray output and the size of spray droplets. As pressure increases, spray output increases but droplet size gets smaller. Excessive pressure can result in too many small droplets, which are prone to drift far away from the target. Excessive pressure also increases wear on the pump, hoses, and nozzles. As pressure decreases, spray output decreases but droplet sizes gets larger. Too low a pressure causes spray so coarse that it does not penetrate foliage properly. For low volume spraying with hollow cone nozzles, adequate spray breakup can be obtained at a pressure of 100 PSI For medium-and high-volume spraying, lower pressure can be used because spray breakup is not as critical. Droplet size charts for varying pressures through nozzle equipment are included in this manual. One the most common problems with piston diaphragm or plunger pump equipped sprayers is accuracy of application rates when dealing with single sided spraying. Most units will experience a pressure increase, therefore increasing the rate of application during this process. Your Major Sprayer is equipped with a unique feature to maintain constant pressure called the Bypass Valve system, which works in the following manner. When either boom control switch is turned off, this automatically rotates the three-way stainless steel ball valve, into the dumping position, sending the extra water and pressure back to the tank.

Just before entering the tank is a throttling valve. This excess water returning to the tank can be adjusted to match the amount of water that would be spraying out the closed boom by adjusting the throttling valve on that line. By doing this, the pressure should remain the same when a boom is shut off. This feature also helps extend pump life by reducing the pressure during start up and reducing pressure spikes. The procedure for setting the bypass valve Step#1. Set the desired pressure at the regulator with both booms running. Step#2. Turn either boom off (one boom only). Step#3. Note the pressure change; if the pressure increases then go to the back of the, tank and open the throttling valve until the pressure is the same as if you had both booms running, if the pressure decreases do the reverse. This procedure will have to be repeated every time the calibration is changed. 4. Selecting Spray Volume Spray volume is the amount of dilatants (usually water) in which a pesticide is mixed and sprayed for a specified area. The choice of spray volume depends on the pesticide, the pest being controlled and the application equipment. Most insects and diseases of fruit trees and vineyards can be controlled with low volume sprays (60 to 90 GPA or 225 to 340 litres/acre). Some pests may require-volume spraying (120 to 250 GPA or 440 to 880 litres/acre) or high volume spraying (300 to 600 GPA or 1,120 to 2,240 litre/acre). High-volume spraying is characterized by considerable runoff and may be required for control of fruit tree scale insects. 5. Measuring Forward Speed Forward speed must be slow enough to allow the air-stream to completely replace the air in the foliage, but not so slow that excessive blow-through results. The choice of forward speed for orchards depends on tree size and spacing, density of foliage, and air-stream speed and volume. The recommended range of forward speeds is from 1 to 3 mph (1.6 to 4.8 Km/h). The sprayer speed selected for use during application must be accurately measured in order to select nozzles and to calculate sprayer delivery rate. Measure forward speed for various gears as follows: Step # 1

Mark off a test strip which is reasonably long 200 ft or (60 metres) and which represents typical field driving conditions. Make sure tire pressures are correct. Fill your tank about half full -you won't be spraying now, but this gives an average weight load.

Step #2

Select a gear and a tachometer to give you 540 PTO. Be sure that the blower is going without discharging water. Reach and hold your forward speed before entering the test strip.

Step #3

Use a stopwatch or watch with a second hand to measure the exact time required to travel the test strip and record.

Step #4

Repeat steps 2 and 3 at least 3 times for each gear selection.

Step #5

Calculate forward speed using in the desired unit by the following formula.

FORWARD SPEED = total distance traveled (ft) x .68 (MPH)

total time elapsed (sec)

FORWARD SPEED = total distance traveled (m) x 3.6 (KM/H)

total time elapsed (sec)

6. Calculating Required Output per Side Air-blast spray nozzles are sold on the basis of their output per minute. You select a set of nozzles whose individual outputs, added together, equal the required output per side. Choose either of the following formulas, depending on the units you are using:

Output per side = (US GPM)

7. Selecting a Set of Nozzles You can now select a set of nozzles to give you the required sprayer output (US GPM OR L/MIN/SIDE) at the selected operating pressure. They are chosen not only to give a correct total output, but also to produce the desired spray pattern. Nozzles of different outputs may be placed in appropriate locations on the sprayer manifold in order to achieve the desired spray pattern. Usually most of the spray volume is directed at the thickest foliage. For vineyard spraying, nozzles may be placed only in the lower half of the manifold. For Airblast units: If you set up your manifold for mature or nearly mature trees, a typical spray pattern is to approximately two thirds (67%) of the spray material through the upper half and about one third (33%) through the lower half. This means nozzles in the lower part will be much smaller than those in upper part. Most air-blast sprayers use seven nozzles on the manifold when applying low-volume sprays, so half the output of the middle (4th) nozzle is included in both upper and lower outputs.

8. Measuring Delivery Rate In theory, the sprayer has been set up to deliver a certain output per side. In fact, the output may be different than expected. This is true both of new nozzles and of old ones, which may have worn through use. You must measure the actual output per minute in order to calculate the delivery rate. You need to know the delivery rate to determine how much pesticide to add to the spray tank and to ensure it is within the range to recommended spray volumes. First measure actual sprayer output per minute. Then, having already tested your true forward speed, you can calculate the delivery rate. Step #1

Position the sprayer on a level location and fill it approximately half full of water. Measure the water level in the tank (use a calibrated measuring stick). Write down the water level.

Step #2

Start the sprayer pump operating. Set the pressure to that used when selecting nozzles.

Step #3

Spray out water from the booms for a measured time, ten minutes is usually enough. You do not have to be moving to complete this test..

Step #4

Measure the amount sprayed by either measuring the amount of water left -in the tank with a calibrated stick or accurate tank gauge, or by refilling the tank to the original level with an accurate measuring container.

Step #5

Calculate the sprayer output per minute for the sprayer from both booms.

Sprayer output = (GPM or Litres/min)

amount sprayed (Gal) or ( Litres ) time of test (min)

9. Adjusting Output Changing nozzle sizes is the only way you should make large changes in output. Changing forward speed for PTO-driven sprayers must only be done by making a full gear change. Such as moving from second low to third low so that PTO speed and engine rpm are maintained. Changing pressure is a way to get a small change in output. It is not advisable for large changes. To double sprayer output you would have to increase spray pressure four times. A FEW TIPS ON MANAGING SPRAY DRIFT Know when not to spray. Delay application if: wind speeds exceed 2.5 mph or 5 km/h, or temperatures is higher that 85 degrees Fahrenheit or 30 Celsius and relative humidity is less that 50 percent. All nozzles produce a spectrum of droplet sizes within the same spray pattern. Spray droplets are measured in microns and categorized as follows:

Fine Medium Coarse Very Coarse

0 - 200 microns 201 - 300 microns 301 - 400 microns 401 -microns and larger

30 - 40 microns 100 microns 500 microns 1000 microns

Visibility Threshold Human Hair Table Salt Thickness of a Dime

The shorter the distance a droplet has to travel, the less chance for drift. Lower the pressure to produce larger droplets. The easiest and most economical way to control drift is to use the right tip. The goal is to get the largest droplets without sacrificing good target coverage. Today's advanced tip design, produce large droplets less prone to drift, while maintaining a high quality spray pattern. In applications where maximum coverage is critical, higher carrier volumes may be necessary when droplet sizes are very coarse.

SAFETY You are responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of your Sprayer. You must ensure that you and anyone else, who is going to operate, maintain, or work around the sprayer understands the information contained in this manual. This manual will take you step by step through your working day and alerts you to all good safety practices that should be followed during operation of your sprayer. Remember you are the key to safety. Good safety practices not only protect you but also the people around you. Make these practices a part of your safety program. Be certain that EVERYONE operating the sprayer knows the safety and maintenance procedures and follows them. Most accidents can be prevented. Do not risk injury or death by ignoring good safety practices. Sprayer owners must give operating instructions to anyone before allowing them to operate the sprayer. An annual review of all safety and maintenance procedures is recommended. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and WCB (Workers Compensation Board) require that these units be operated by only certified operators who have passed any required state or provincial certification courses. The most important safety device on this equipment is a safe operator. It is the operator’s responsibility to read and understand all safety and operating instructions in the manual and to follow them. All accidents can be avoided. A person who has not read and understood all the operating and safety instructions is not qualified to operate the sprayer. An untrained operator exposes himself and others to possible serious injury or even death. Do not modify the equipment in any way. Unauthorized modification may impair the function and safety of the sprayer and could affect the life of the equipment. Think Safety! Work Safely!

DRIVELINE SAFETY

Agriculture is recognized as one of the more hazardous occupations. Today’s farmer spends more hours in close proximity to increasingly complex and powerful machinery. In order to avoid accidents, everyone from manufacturer, to dealer and customer must keep safety in mind. When the sprayer is attached to the tractor with a clevis hitch as is the Major, it may be attached to a hammer-strap style drawbar, the hammer-strap must be removed to prevent damage to the IID guarding and the IID telescoping members. (See figure 1)

If the sprayer is attached to a tractor with an offset in the drawbar, be certain it is in the down position to prevent damage to the IID guarding and the IID telescoping members. (see figure 2)

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WARNING : This is only a brief overview of the steps to assist you in the safe operation of your sprayer. Buyer assumes all responsibility for the safe and proper handling of hazardous chemicals. All State, Federal and Provincial laws or OSHA or WCB regulations regarding application and handling of pesticides and pesticide application take precedence over this manual. Before starting it is the owners responsibility to insure that himself and his operators are in compliance with all regulation pertaining to pesticide application and equipment. WARNING: To prevent serious injury from spray do not point water that is under pressure at any part of the body or place in mouth. CAUTION: Agricultural chemicals can be dangerous. Improper selection or use can cause serious injury to persons, animals, plants, soil or other property. Be safe and always read the label on chemicals and select the right one for the job. Handle them with care.

BEFORE YOU START Check all fasteners and tighten if necessary. Inspect oil levels in both pump and gearbox. Grease all bearings and PTO Shafts before starting Check that the sprayer is securely attached to the tractor. Make sure that the drive shaft is set up according to the " SPRAYER PTO SETUP " section of this manual. A safety chain should always be used. Check all moving parts. Remove all entangled material or debris. Inspect the agitation drive and agitation shaft paddles for correct operation. Check that the pressure regulator is fully released and the adjusting knob has been loosened. This procedure is to avoid possible over pressuring of the system and bursting hoses. Operating the system in the red area on the pressure gauge voids warranty. Check that all guards, turbine hoods and covers are in place where applicable Check that all protective gear, respirators and face shields are in good working condition. Always wear coveralls and waterproof gloves and boots. Always wear face protection, waterproof hat and apron, and respirator when loading and mixing hazardous chemicals. Always follow the labels and instructions that come with the chemicals.

OPERATING SAFETY  Read and understand completely the owner’s manual and all safety decals before using the sprayer  Before doing any servicing, adjusting, repairing or maintenance to the sprayer; stop the tractor engine, place all controls in neutral, set park brake, remove ignition key and wait for all moving parts to stop.  Keep hands, feet, hair and clothing away from all moving and rotating parts.  Do not allow riders on the sprayer or tractor during operation.  All covers, guards and hoods must be in place when operating.  Be sure the sprayer is properly attached to the tractor and a safety chain is in place.  Clear the area of all bystanders, animals and especially small children before starting. .Use two men when attaching or unhooking the sprayer from the tractor . Always follow OSHA or WCB operating safety requirements.  Review safety instructions annually. TRANSPORT SAFETY  Always travel at a safe speed. Do not exceed 20 mph (32 km/h) during transport. Be sure the sprayer is securely attached to the tractor, complete with safety chain.  Use hazard-warning flashers on tractor when transporting unless prohibited by law. Clean lights reflectors and SMV before transporting.  Do not allow riders on the sprayer or tractor during transportation.  Always follow applicable laws as to the transportation of your sprayer. STORAGE SAFETY  Store the sprayer in an area away from human activity.  Do not allow children or animals near the stored machine  Clean the sprayer of chemical residue before storing. CHOOSING A MIXING SITE  Post emergency phone numbers for quick response. -Ambulance -Police -Physician -Poison Control Center -Fire Department  Choose the mixing site carefully. It should be outside, away from other people, livestock and pets. Choose an area where a spill or overflow could not get into a water supply and the spill could be easily contained for cleanup. Mixing pesticides near a pond, stream or ditch is prohibited. Keep soap and emergency water supply nearby at all times. FILLING THE TANK WITH WATER  Prevent overflow, do not leave the tank unattended  Prevent contamination of the water supply by keeping the filler hose above the level of the water at all times and/or use of a backflow prevention valve to prevent contamination.  Use clean water. Sand, dirt and algae cause severe pump damage; nozzle wear and can reduce the effectiveness of pesticides.

READ CHEMICAL LABELS  Read the labels of all chemicals and pesticides before you mix or apply them. Do not trust your memory, the label instructions may have changed since the last use.  Use a sprayer properly calibrated to your site. See the " CALIBRATION " section of this manual for calibration guidelines  Wear the correct protective clothing and equipment.  Keep cleanup, disposal, and first aid equipment close at hand. ADDING CHEMICALS TO TANK  Before adding chemicals, check all fittings and hoses for leaks.  Wear full protective equipment while filling sprayer with chemical. Fill the sprayer tank half full with water. Turn on the agitator  Slowly add chemicals. Hold the container below eye level when pouring. This will reduce the chance of splashing chemicals on your protective clothing. Finish filling the tank  Wash your hands before getting onto the tractor to prevent direct contamination of tractor controls and cab. CLEANING AND DISPOSAL OF CONTAINERS  Cleaning or disposal of containers should be done in accordance with provincial, state or federal laws. Standards established by OSHA or WCB should also be followed. ADDITIONAL PRECAUTIONS  Wash before eating, drinking, smoking or using the toilet. Pesticides and other chemicals can easily be transferred from your hands to your mouth or skin Watch the weather. Do not spray when winds are stronger than a gentle breeze. (2 mph or 3.5 km/h) As wind increases, so does drift. Strong winds cause uneven chemical application. Early in the morning or early evening are usually times of less wind and are good times for spraying.  Have fresh water, first aid equipment and spill supplies ready and on hand at all times.  Post warning signs to keep people out of treated areas Make sure the area to be treated is clear of people and animals. If you feel ill, stop immediately and get help  Wear gloves to replace or clean plugged nozzles. Use a soft brush or toothpick to clear particles from nozzle. Never use a wire or metal to clean a nozzle. this will damage the nozzle. Replace the nozzle with the same size parts to keep the calibration accurate. Never blow nozzles clean with your mouth.  Shut off nozzles when turning, using the boom controls.  Use and maintain the correct tractor speed for your calibration during application. A change of speed changes calibration.  Plan your spray route so you avoid passing through airborne spray and treated areas.  Do not work alone when handling toxic chemicals. Someone should always be aware of what you are doing and when you will be finished. Tell this person if you make any changes to your plans.  Do not apply chemicals before heavy rain. Rain can wash off treated surfaces and cause runoff from treated area.
